Most days it's a two-way tie between the Grateful Dead and REM, one for the 60s and 70s, the other for the 80s and 90s. <BR><BR> I'm starting to revise my opinion now with this latest album by the duo, White Stripes. <BR><BR> Jack and Meg can't half make a racket and Icky Thump is just the ticket: a full-on riff-mongous beast of an album. <BR><BR> The title track you already know, a proggy thing that wouldn't sound out of place on the Vertigo label. <BR><BR> Everything else here either reaches that height and, on several occasions, surpasses it. <BR><BR> What's particularly groovy about the White Stripes is the fact that they sound like they're just getting going, despite never having made a bad album. Indeed, for ones so prolific, it's amazing at the consistent quality of their output. <BR><BR> The Anglophile bent is well to the fore - they wear it on the album sleeve, dressed as pearly king and queen and in a bonkers two-song middle section with bagpipes and mandolin. <BR><BR> Elsewhere though it's Jack and Meg doing what they do best. <BR><BR> Bone Broke and Catch Hell Blues are gut-teral and timeless, but You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do What You're Told), a simply stunning song, shows that the band can now take their place at American music's very small top table. <BR><BR> Andrew Cowen <BR><BR> Kelly Clarkson My December (RCA) *** <BR><BR> Kelly has gradually been putting her own stamp on her music since her 2003 debut. Thankful was predominantly a pop album, before the aptly-titled Breakaway saw her embracing more full-throttle rock influences. <BR><BR> My December takes that one step further, with dark and intimate tinges seen in her powerful songwriting - she co-wrote or wrote every song. Sober is the stand-out track on My December, but Haunted, Be Still, Irvine and bonus track Chivas, come very close. <BR><BR> Fay Holland <BR><BR> Shirley Bassey Get The Party Started (Lock Stock & Barrel) *** <BR><BR> After 10 years, the Dame is back at her best with a new album to mark her 70th birthday. <BR><BR> She kicks off the celebrations in style with her cover of Pink's Get The Party Started. <BR><BR> Shirley's new album is upbeat and ballsy, her powerful vocals as impressive as ever. The 13 remixed and re-worked tracks have a contemporary flavour to appeal to fans both young and old. Highlights include Big Spender, I Will Survive and Kiss Me Honey Honey. The perfect album to really get the party started. <BR><BR> Steve Bird <BR><BR> Andrea Corr Ten Feet High (Atlantic) ** <BR><BR> Fans of The Corrs will be expecting a lot from lead singer Andrea.
