Miracles at Ephesus<a href="/acts/19-11.htm">11</a>God<MG2316> was performing<MG4160> extraordinary<MG3756, 5177> <a href="#fn">[e]</a>miracles<MG1411> by the hands<MG5495> of Paul<MG3972>, <a href="/acts/19-12.htm">12</a>so<MG5620> that<MG5620> handkerchiefs<MG4676> or<MG2228> aprons<MG4612> were even<MG2532> carried<MG667> from his body<MG5559> to the sick<MG770>, and the diseases<MG3554> left<MG525> them and the evil<MG4190> spirits<MG4151> went<MG1607> out<MG1607>. <a href="/acts/19-13.htm">13</a>But also<MG2532> some<MG5100> of the Jewish<MG2453> exorcists<MG1845>, who went<MG4022> from<MG4022> place<MG4022> to<MG4022> place<MG4022>, attempted<MG2021> to <a href="#fn">[f]</a>use<MG3687> the name<MG3686> of the Lord<MG2962> Jesus<MG2424> over<MG1909> those<MG3588> who had<MG2192> the evil<MG4190> spirits<MG4151>, saying<MG3004>, “I order<MG3726> you in<MG3726> the<MG3726> name<MG3726> of<MG3726> Jesus<MG2424> whom<MG3739> Paul<MG3972> preaches<MG2784>!” <a href="/acts/19-14.htm">14</a>Now<MG1161> there were seven<MG2033> sons<MG5207> of <a href="#fn">[g]</a>Sceva<MG4630>, a Jewish<MG2453> chief<MG749> priest<MG749>, doing<MG4160> this<MG3778>. <a href="/acts/19-15.htm">15</a>But the evil<MG4190> spirit<MG4151> responded<MG611> and said<MG3004> to them, “I recognize<MG1097> Jesus<MG2424>, and I know<MG1987> of Paul<MG3972>, but who<MG5101> are you?” <a href="/acts/19-16.htm">16</a>And the man<MG444> in whom<MG3739> was the evil<MG4190> spirit<MG4151>, pounced<MG2177> on them and subdued<MG2634b> all<MG297> of them and overpowered<MG2480> them, so<MG5620> that<MG5620> they fled<MG1628> out of that house<MG3624> naked<MG1131> and wounded<MG5135>. <a href="/acts/19-17.htm">17</a>This<MG3778> became<MG1096> known<MG1110> to all<MG3956> who lived<MG2730> in Ephesus<MG2181>, both<MG5037> Jews<MG2453> and Greeks<MG1672>; and fear<MG5401> fell<MG1968> upon<MG1968> them all<MG3956> and the name<MG3686> of the Lord<MG2962> Jesus<MG2424> was being magnified<MG3170>. <a href="/acts/19-18.htm">18</a>Also<MG5037> many<MG4183> of those<MG3588> who had believed<MG4100> kept coming<MG2064>, confessing<MG1843> and disclosing<MG312> their practices<MG4234>. <a href="/acts/19-19.htm">19</a>And many<MG2425> of those<MG3588> who practiced<MG4238> magic<MG4021> brought<MG4851a> their books<MG976> together<MG4851a> and began burning<MG2618> them in<MG1799> the<MG1799> sight<MG1799> of<MG1799> everyone<MG3956>; and they added<MG4860> up<MG4860> the prices<MG5092> of <a href="#fn">[h]</a>the books and found<MG2147> it to be fifty<MG3461, 4002> thousand<MG3461> <a href="#fn">[i]</a>pieces of silver<MG694>. <a href="/acts/19-20.htm">20</a>So<MG3779> <a href="#fn">[j]</a>the word<MG3056> of the Lord<MG2962> was growing<MG837> and prevailing<MG2480> mightily<MG2904>. <a href="/acts/19-21.htm">21</a>Now<MG1161> after<MG5613> these<MG3778> things<MG3778> were finished<MG4137>, Paul<MG3972> resolved<MG5087> in <a href="#fn">[k]</a>the Spirit<MG4151> to go<MG4198> to Jerusalem<MG2414> after he had passed<MG1330> through<MG1330> Macedonia<MG3109> and Achaia<MG882>, saying<MG3004>, “After<MG3326> I have been<MG1096> there<MG1563>, I must<MG1163> also<MG2532> see<MG3708> Rome<MG4516>.” <a href="/acts/19-22.htm">22</a>And after he sent<MG649> into Macedonia<MG3109> two<MG1417> of those<MG3588> who assisted<MG1247> him, Timothy<MG5095> and Erastus<MG2037>, he himself<MG846> stayed<MG1907> in <a href="#fn">[l]</a>Asia<MG773> for a while<MG5550>. <a href="/acts/19-23.htm">23</a>About<MG2596> that time<MG2540> <a href="#fn">[m]</a>a major<MG3756, 3641> disturbance<MG5017> occurred<MG1096> in<MG4012> regard<MG4012> to<MG4012> <a href="#fn">[n]</a>the Way<MG3598>. <a href="/acts/19-24.htm">24</a>For a man<MG5100> named<MG3686> Demetrius<MG1216>, a silversmith<MG695> who made<MG4160> silver<MG693> shrines<MG3485> of <a href="#fn">[o]</a>Artemis<MG735>, was bringing<MG3930> <a href="#fn">[p]</a>considerable<MG3756, 3641> <a href="#fn">[q]</a>business<MG2039> to the craftsmen<MG5079>; <a href="/acts/19-25.htm">25</a>he gathered<MG4867> these<MG3739> men<MG3739> together<MG4867> with the workmen<MG2040> of similar<MG5108> trades, and said<MG3004>, “Men<MG435>, you know<MG1987> that our prosperity<MG2142> <a href="#fn">[r]</a>depends<MG1510, 1537> upon this<MG3778> business<MG2039>. <a href="/acts/19-26.htm">26</a>You see<MG2334> and hear<MG191> that not only<MG3440> in Ephesus<MG2181>, but in almost<MG4975> all<MG3956> of <a href="#fn">[s]</a>Asia<MG773>, this<MG3778> Paul<MG3972> has persuaded<MG3982> and turned<MG3179> away<MG3179> a considerable<MG2425> number<MG3793> of<MG3793> people<MG3793>, saying<MG3004> that <a href="#fn">[t]</a>gods made<MG1096> by hands<MG5495> are not<MG3756> gods<MG2316> at all. <a href="/acts/19-27.htm">27</a>Not only<MG3440> is<MG2793> there danger<MG2793> that this<MG3778> trade<MG3313> of ours<MG1473> will fall<MG2064> into disrepute<MG557>, but also<MG2532> that the temple<MG2413> of the great<MG3173> goddess<MG2299> <a href="#fn">[u]</a>Artemis<MG735> will be regarded<MG3049> as worthless<MG3762>, and that she whom<MG3739> all<MG3650> of <a href="#fn">[v]</a>Asia<MG773> and the <a href="#fn">[w]</a>world<MG3625> worship<MG4576> will even<MG2532> be dethroned<MG2507> from her magnificence<MG3168>.” <a href="/acts/19-28.htm">28</a>When they heard<MG191> this and were filled<MG4134> with rage<MG2372>, they began shouting<MG2896>, saying<MG3004>, “Great<MG3173> is <a href="#fn">[x]</a>Artemis<MG735> of the Ephesians<MG2180>!” <a href="/acts/19-29.htm">29</a>The city<MG4172> was filled<MG4092a> with the confusion<MG4799>, and they rushed<MG3729> together<MG3661> into the theater<MG2302>, dragging<MG4884> along<MG4884> Gaius<MG1050> and Aristarchus<MG708>, Paul’s<MG3972> Macedonian<MG3110> traveling<MG4898> companions<MG4898>. <a href="/acts/19-30.htm">30</a>And when Paul<MG3972> wanted<MG1014> to go<MG1525> into the assembly<MG1218>, the disciples<MG3101> would not let<MG1439> him. <a href="/acts/19-31.htm">31</a>Also<MG2532> some<MG5100> of the <a href="#fn">[y]</a>Asiarchs<MG775> who were friends<MG5384> of his sent<MG3992> word to him and repeatedly urged<MG3870> him not to <a href="#fn">[z]</a>venture<MG1325, 1438> into the theater<MG2302>. <a href="/acts/19-32.htm">32</a>So<MG3767> then<MG3767>, some<MG243> were shouting<MG2896> one<MG3303a> thing and some<MG243> another<MG243>, for the <a href="#fn">[aa]</a>assembly<MG1577> was in<MG4797> confusion<MG4797> and the majority<MG4183> did not know<MG3609a> <a href="#fn">[ab]</a>for what<MG5101> reason<MG1752a> they had come<MG4905> together<MG4905>. <a href="/acts/19-33.htm">33</a>Some of the crowd<MG3793> <a href="#fn">[ac]</a>concluded<MG4822> it was Alexander<MG223>, since the Jews<MG2453> had put<MG4261> him forward<MG4261>; and having motioned<MG2678> with his hand<MG5495>, Alexander<MG223> was intending<MG2309> to make<MG626> a<MG626> defense<MG626> to the assembly<MG1218>. <a href="/acts/19-34.htm">34</a>But when they recognized<MG1921> that he was a Jew<MG2453>, a single<MG1520> outcry<MG5456> arose<MG1096> from them all<MG3956> as they shouted<MG2896> for about<MG5613> two<MG1417> hours<MG5610>, “Great<MG3173> is <a href="#fn">[ad]</a>Artemis<MG735> of the Ephesians<MG2180>!” <a href="/acts/19-35.htm">35</a>After quieting<MG2687> the crowd<MG3793>, the town<MG1122> clerk<MG1122> *said<MG5346>, “Men<MG435> of Ephesus<MG2181>, what<MG5101> person<MG444> is there after<MG1063> all<MG1063> who<MG3739> does not know<MG1097> that the city<MG4172> of the Ephesians<MG2180> is guardian<MG3511> of<MG3511> the<MG3511> temple<MG3511> of the great<MG3173> <a href="#fn">[ae]</a>Artemis<MG735> and of the image which<MG1356> fell<MG1356> down<MG1356> from<MG1356> <a href="#fn">[af]</a>the<MG1356> sky<MG1356>? <a href="/acts/19-36.htm">36</a>So<MG3767>, since these<MG3778> are undeniable<MG368> facts, you ought<MG1189b> to keep<MG5225> calm<MG2687> and to do<MG4238> nothing<MG3367> rash<MG4312>. <a href="/acts/19-37.htm">37</a>For you have brought<MG71> these<MG3778> men<MG435> here who are neither<MG3777> temple<MG2417> robbers<MG2417> nor<MG3777> blasphemers<MG987> of our goddess<MG2299>. <a href="/acts/19-38.htm">38</a>So<MG3767> then<MG3767>, if<MG1487> Demetrius<MG1216> and the craftsmen<MG5079> who are with him have<MG2192> a complaint<MG3056> against<MG4314> anyone<MG5100>, the courts<MG60> are in<MG71> session<MG71> and <a href="#fn">[ag]</a>proconsuls<MG446> are available;
