But in some parishes, they are conspicuous by their absence.</p> <p>Such communities might be one of a number of “Thankful Villages” in England and Wales, places which saw all their men return safely from the First World War. Some are known as “Doubly Thankful”, after the good fortune was repeated during the Second World War.</p> <p>The term first came into being in the years that followed the Great War. Writer and journalist Arthur Mee coined it in a guide to the counties of England in 1930. At that point, he noticed 42 settlements without a memorial.</p> <p>The number has since grown to 56, as research revealed more parishes that escaped the conflict...</p> <div
