And Gilead<MH1568> had fathered<MH3205> Jephthah<MH3316>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Gilead&#8217;s<MH1568> wife<MH802> bore<MH3205> him sons<MH1121>; and when his wife&#8217;s<MH802> sons<MH1121> grew<MH1431> up<MH1431>, they drove<MH1644> Jephthah<MH3316> out<MH1644> and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;You shall not have<MH5157> an<MH5157> inheritance<MH5157> in our father&#8217;s<MH1> house<MH1004>, for you are the son<MH1121> of another<MH312> woman<MH802>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So Jephthah<MH3316> fled<MH1272> from his brothers<MH251> and lived<MH3427> in the land<MH776> of Tob<MH2897>; and worthless<MH7386> men<MH376> gathered<MH3950> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>around<MH413> Jephthah<MH3316>, and they went<MH3318> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>wherever he did. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, after<MH4480> a while<MH3117>, that the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> fought<MH3898a> against<MH5973> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>When<MH3512c> the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> fought<MH3898a> against<MH5973> Israel<MH3478>, the elders<MH2205> of Gilead<MH1568> went<MH1980> to get<MH3947> Jephthah<MH3316> from the land<MH776> of Tob<MH2897>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>and they said<MH559> to Jephthah<MH3316>, &#8220;Come<MH1980> and be our leader<MH7101>, that we may fight<MH3898a> against the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But Jephthah<MH3316> said<MH559> to the elders<MH2205> of Gilead<MH1568>, &#8220;Did you not hate<MH8130> me and drive<MH1644> me from my father&#8217;s<MH1> house<MH1004>? So why<MH4069> have you come<MH935> to me now<MH6258> when<MH3512c> you are<MH6887a> in<MH6887a> trouble<MH6887a>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The elders<MH2205> of Gilead<MH1568> said<MH559> to Jephthah<MH3316>, &#8220;For this<MH3651> reason<MH3651> we have now<MH6258> returned<MH7725> to you, that you may go<MH1980> with us and fight<MH3898a> the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>, and become<MH1961> our head<MH7218> over all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Gilead<MH1568>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So Jephthah<MH3316> said<MH559> to the elders<MH2205> of Gilead<MH1568>, &#8220;If<MH518> you bring<MH7725> me back<MH7725> to fight<MH3898a> against the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> and the LORD<MH3068> gives<MH5414> them up<MH5414> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>to me, will I become<MH1961> your head<MH7218>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the elders<MH2205> of Gilead<MH1568> said<MH559> to Jephthah<MH3316>, &#8220;The LORD<MH3068> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>witness<MH8085> between<MH996> us; be assured<MH518, 3808> we will do<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>as you have said<MH1697>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Jephthah<MH3316> went<MH1980> with the elders<MH2205> of Gilead<MH1568>, and the people<MH5971a> made<MH7760> him head<MH7218> and leader<MH7101> over<MH5921> them; and Jephthah<MH3316> spoke<MH1696> all<MH3605> his words<MH1697> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> at Mizpah<MH4709>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So Jephthah<MH3316> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> to the king<MH4428> of the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;What<MH4100> <i>conflict</i> do you and I have, that you have come<MH935> to me to fight<MH3898a> against my land<MH776>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> of the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> said<MH559> to the messengers<MH4397> of Jephthah<MH3316>, &#8220;<i>It is</i> because<MH3588> Israel<MH3478> took<MH3947> my land<MH776> when they came<MH5927> up<MH5927> from Egypt<MH4714>, from the Arnon<MH769> as far<MH5704> as the Jabbok<MH2999> and the Jordan<MH3383>; so return<MH7725> them peaceably<MH7965> now<MH6258>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But Jephthah<MH3316> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> once<MH5750> again<MH3254> to the king<MH4428> of the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and they said<MH559> to him, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> Jephthah<MH3316> says<MH559>: &#8216;Israel<MH3478> did not take<MH3947> the land<MH776> of Moab<MH4124> nor<MH3808> the land<MH776> of the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>For when they came<MH5927> up<MH5927> from Egypt<MH4714>, and Israel<MH3478> went<MH1980> through the wilderness<MH4057b> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Red<MH5488> Sea<MH3220>, and came<MH935> to Kadesh<MH6946>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>then Israel<MH3478> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> to the king<MH4428> of Edom<MH112b>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;Please<MH4994> let us pass<MH5674a> through your land<MH776>&#8221;; but the king<MH4428> of Edom<MH112b> would not listen<MH8085>. And they also<MH1571> sent<MH7971> <i>messengers</i> to the king<MH4428> of Moab<MH4124>, but he would not consent<MH14>. So Israel<MH3478> remained<MH3427> at Kadesh<MH6946>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then they went<MH1980> through the wilderness<MH4057b> and around<MH5437> the land<MH776> of Edom<MH112b> and the land<MH776> of Moab<MH4124>, and came<MH935> to the east<MH4217, 8121> side<MH4217, 8121> of the land<MH776> of Moab<MH4124>, and they camped<MH2583> beyond<MH5676> the Arnon<MH769>; but they did not enter<MH935> the territory<MH1366> of Moab<MH4124>, for the Arnon<MH769> <i>was</i> the border<MH1366> of Moab<MH4124>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And Israel<MH3478> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> to Sihon<MH5511> king<MH4428> of the Amorites<MH567>, the king<MH4428> of Heshbon<MH2809>; and Israel<MH3478> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Please<MH4994> let us pass<MH5674a> through your land<MH776> to our place<MH4725>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But Sihon<MH5511> did not trust<MH539> Israel<MH3478> to pass<MH5674a> through his territory<MH1366>; so Sihon<MH5511> gathered<MH622> all<MH3605> his people<MH5971a> and camped<MH2583> in Jahaz<MH3096>, and fought<MH3898a> with Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, handed<MH5414, 3027> Sihon<MH5511> and all<MH3605> his people<MH5971a> over<MH5414> to Israel<MH3478>, and they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>defeated<MH5221> them; so Israel<MH3478> took<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of all<MH3605> the land<MH776> of the Amorites<MH567>, the inhabitants<MH3427> of that country<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So they possessed<MH3423> all<MH3605> the territory<MH1366> of the Amorites<MH567>, from the Arnon<MH769> as far<MH5704> as the Jabbok<MH2999>, and from the wilderness<MH4057b> as far<MH5704> as the Jordan<MH3383>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And now<MH6258> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, has driven<MH3423> out<MH3423> the Amorites<MH567> from His people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>; so should you possess<MH3423> it? <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Do you not possess<MH3423> what<MH834> Chemosh<MH3645> your god<MH430> gives<MH3423> you to<MH3423> possess<MH3423>? So whatever<MH3605, 834> the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430> has dispossessed<MH3423> before<MH4480, 6440> us, we will possess<MH3423> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, are you any<MH2895> better<MH2895> than<MH4480> Balak<MH1111> the son<MH1121> of Zippor<MH6834>, king<MH4428> of Moab<MH4124>? Did he ever<MH7378> contend<MH7378> with Israel<MH3478>, or<MH518> did he ever<MH3898a> fight<MH3898a> against them? <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>While Israel<MH3478> was living<MH3427> in Heshbon<MH2809> and its villages<MH1323>, and in Aroer<MH6177> and its villages<MH1323>, and in all<MH3605> the cities<MH5892b> that are on the banks<MH3027> of the Arnon<MH769>, three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> years<MH8141>, why<MH4069> did you not recover<MH5337> them within that time<MH6256>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So I have not sinned<MH2398> against you, but you are doing<MH6213a> me wrong<MH7463a> by making<MH3898a> war<MH3898a> against me. May the LORD<MH3068>, the Judge<MH8199>, judge<MH8199> today<MH3117> between<MH996> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> and the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But the king<MH4428> of the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>disregarded<MH3808, 8085> the message<MH1697> which<MH834> Jephthah<MH3316> sent<MH7971> him. <p class="hdg">Jephthah&#8217;s Tragic Vow</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Now the Spirit<MH7307> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> upon Jephthah<MH3316>, and he passed<MH5674a> through<MH5674a> Gilead<MH1568> and Manasseh<MH4519>; then he passed<MH5674a> through<MH5674a> Mizpah<MH4708> of Gilead<MH1568>, and from Mizpah<MH4708> of Gilead<MH1568> he went<MH5674a> on<MH5674a> to the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And Jephthah<MH3316> made<MH5087> a vow<MH5088> to the LORD<MH3068> and said<MH559>, &#8220;If<MH518> You will indeed<MH5414> hand<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to me the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>then whatever<MH834> comes<MH3318> out<MH3318> the doors<MH1817> of my house<MH1004> to meet<MH7122> me when I return<MH7725> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>safely<MH7965> from the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>, it shall be the LORD&#8217;S<MH3068>, and I will offer<MH5927> it up<MH5927> as a burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>So Jephthah<MH3316> crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> to the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> to fight<MH3898a> against them; and the LORD<MH3068> handed<MH5414, 3027> them over<MH5414> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>inflicted<MH5221> a very<MH3966> great<MH1419> defeat<MH4347> on them from Aroer<MH6177> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>to the entrance<MH935> of Minnith<MH4511>, twenty<MH6242> cities<MH5892b>, and as far<MH5704> as Abel-keramim<MH64>. So the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983> were subdued<MH3665> before<MH4480, 6440> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>But Jephthah<MH3316> came<MH935> to his house<MH1004> at Mizpah<MH4709>, and behold<MH2009>, his daughter<MH1323> was coming<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH7122> him with tambourines<MH8596> and with dancing<MH4246>. And she was his one<MH7534b> <i>and</i> only<MH3173> child<MH3173>; besides<MH4480> her he had<MH369> no<MH369> son<MH1121> or<MH176> daughter<MH1323>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>So when he saw<MH7200> her, he tore<MH7167> his clothes<MH899b> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Oh<MH162>, my daughter<MH1323>! You have brought<MH3766> me disaster<MH3766>, and you are among those who trouble<MH5916> me; for I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>given<MH6475> my word<MH6310> to the LORD<MH3068>, and I cannot<MH3201, 3808> take<MH7725> <i>it</i> back<MH7725>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>So she said<MH559> to him, &#8220;My father<MH1>, you have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>given<MH6475> your word<MH6310> to the LORD<MH3068>; do<MH6213a> to me just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>you have said<MH3318, 4480, 6310>, since<MH310, 834> the LORD<MH3068> has brought<MH6213a> you vengeance<MH5360> on your enemies<MH340>, the sons<MH1121> of Ammon<MH5983>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And she said<MH559> to her father<MH1>, &#8220;Let this<MH2088> thing<MH1697> be done<MH6213a> for me; allow<MH7503, 4480> me two<MH8147> months<MH2320>, so that I may <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>go<MH1980, 3381> to the mountains<MH2022> and weep<MH1058> because<MH5921> of my virginity<MH1331>, I and my friends<MH7464>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH1980>.&#8221; So he let<MH7971> her go<MH7971> for two<MH8147> months<MH2320>; and she left<MH1980> with her friends<MH7464>, and wept<MH1058> on the mountains<MH2022> because<MH5921> of her virginity<MH1331>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/11-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And at the end<MH7093> of two<MH8147> months<MH2320> she returned<MH7725> to her father<MH1>, who did<MH6213a> to her <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>what<MH5088> he had vowed<MH5087>; and she <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>had<MH3045> no<MH3808> relations<MH3045> with a man<MH376>.
