Overview

The Series page shows books belonging to a series, and the series order. Occasionally books may belong to more than one series.

In June 2020 a major revamp of LT series was introduced. Series are no longer part of Common Knowledge and their CK field has been removed. Series (sometimes called "new series" to contrast with the older version) are now part of the work relationships module; they can be edited from either a work page or from the series page.

Series pages contain global data shared by all members on the site. (Translation: when you make edits to a series page, you're making edits for everyone.)

See the blog post for more details.

What is a series? What isn't?

Also see the Series FAQ page.

Series was designed to cover groups of books generally understood as such (see Wikipedia: Book series). Like many concepts in the book world, "series" is a somewhat fluid and contested notion. A good rule of thumb is that series have a conventional name and are intentional creations, on the part of the author or publisher. Do not create mere "lists" of works possessing an arbitrary shared characteristic, such as relating to a particular place - the Lists beta feature can be used for these. Avoid series that cross authors, unless the authors were or became aware of the series identification, as in Wheel of Time or the Gods and Monsters shared universe series; so don't, for example, lump Jane Austen's works with her continuators - the work relationship "Is a (non-series) sequel to" instead can be appropriate for cases like this, see HelpThing:Work/Relationships.

Works can belong to more than one Series and they can belong to more than one Publisher Series. In some cases, as with Chronicles of Narnia, disagreements about order necessitate the creation of more than one series.

Publisher Series

LT distinguishes between a "regular" Series - a series of works, and a Publisher Series - a series of editions.

A "regular" Series is defined by one of the following: all works are written by the same author, and/or all works are set in the same "world", and/or all works have the same set of characters. Books of this nature tend to be numbered, and are typically meant to be read in a specific order (exceptions exist with such Series as The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, etc.). A work being in a "regular" Series means every edition of that work is in the series.

The defining characteristic of a Publisher Series is that the books have been marketed together by the publisher, like Penguin Modern Classics. Different editions of the same work can be in different Publisher Series. Any Publisher Series that a work has been linked to will display on the work page.

A Publisher Series may be republications of older works or they may be entirely new works that have never been published before. Sometimes a Publisher Series consists of both older and newer works. Other examples of Publishers Series include: Reader's Digest Condensed Books, Loeb Classical Library, Hesperus Classics, and Oxford's "A Very Short Introduction" series. Publishers Series are common in academia and include both fiction and non-fiction works. Some Publishers Series include numbers, some do not.

If the publisher has a true monopoly over the works in question, as in the For Dummies series, then this makes it a "regular" Series.

Main Series Page

Series Name

At the top of the page is the name of the series. The name is displayed in the language of the site being viewed if a name has been added in that language, otherwise it will show the name in the original language of the series.

Original Name

There may be a line beneath the series name displaying the name of the series in its original language. This will only show if viewing LT in a language which differs from the series' original language.
