And Joseph<MH3130> brought<MH935> back a bad<MH1681, 7451a> report<MH1681> about them to their father<MH1>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now Israel<MH3478> loved<MH157> Joseph<MH3130> more<MH4480> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> his <i>other</i> sons<MH1121>, because<MH3588> he was the son<MH1121> of his old<MH2208> age<MH2208>; and he made<MH6213a> him a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>multicolored<MH6446> tunic<MH3801>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And his brothers<MH251> saw<MH7200> that their father<MH1> loved<MH157> him more<MH4480> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> his brothers<MH251>; and <i>so</i> they hated<MH8130> him and could<MH3201> not speak<MH1696> to him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>on friendly<MH7965> terms<MH7965>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Joseph<MH3130> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>had<MH2492b> a dream<MH2472>, and when he told<MH5046> it to his brothers<MH251>, they hated<MH8130> him even<MH5750> more<MH3254, 5750>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>He said<MH559> to them, “Please<MH4994> listen<MH8085> to this<MH2088> dream<MH2472> which<MH834> I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>had<MH2492b>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>for behold<MH2009>, we were binding<MH481> sheaves<MH485> in the field<MH7704>, and behold<MH2009>, my sheaf<MH485> stood<MH6965> up<MH6965> and also<MH1571> remained<MH5324> standing<MH5324>; and behold<MH2009>, your sheaves<MH485> gathered<MH5437> around<MH5437> and bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to my sheaf<MH485>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then his brothers<MH251> said<MH559> to him, “Are you actually<MH4427a> going to reign<MH4427a> over<MH5921> us? Or<MH518> are you really<MH4910> going to rule<MH4910> over us?” So they hated<MH8130> him even<MH5750> more<MH3254, 5750> for his dreams<MH2472> and for his words<MH1697>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>had<MH2492b> yet<MH5750> another<MH312> dream<MH2472>, and informed<MH5608> his brothers<MH251> of it, and said<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>had<MH2492b> yet<MH5750> <i>another</i> dream<MH2472>; and behold<MH2009>, the sun<MH8121> and the moon<MH3394>, and eleven<MH259, 6240> stars<MH3556> were bowing<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He also told<MH5608> <i>it</i> to his father<MH1> as well as to his brothers<MH251>; and his father<MH1> rebuked<MH1605> him and said<MH559> to him, “What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> dream<MH2472> that you have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>had<MH2492b>? Am I and your mother<MH517> and your brothers<MH251> actually<MH935> going to come<MH935> to bow<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to the ground<MH776> before you?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And his brothers<MH251> were<MH7065> jealous<MH7065> of him, but his father<MH1> kept<MH8104> the matter<MH1697> <i>in mind.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then his brothers<MH251> went<MH1980> to pasture<MH7462a> their father’s<MH1> flock<MH6629> in Shechem<MH7927>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And Israel<MH3478> said<MH559> to Joseph<MH3130>, “Are your brothers<MH251> not pasturing<MH7462a> <i>the flock</i> in Shechem<MH7927>? Come<MH1980>, and I will send<MH7971> you to them.” And he said<MH559> to him, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>I will go<MH2009>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559> to him, “Go<MH1980> now<MH4994> and see<MH7200> about<MH7200> the welfare<MH7965> of your brothers<MH251> and the welfare<MH7965> of the flock<MH6629>, and bring<MH7725> word<MH1697> back<MH7725> to me.” So he sent<MH7971> him from the Valley<MH6010> of Hebron<MH2275a>, and he came<MH935> to Shechem<MH7927>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>A man<MH376> found<MH4672> him, and behold<MH2009>, he was wandering<MH8582> in the field<MH7704>; and the man<MH376> asked<MH7592> him, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>What<MH4100> are you looking<MH1245> for<MH1245>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, “I am looking<MH1245> for<MH1245> my brothers<MH251>; please<MH4994> tell<MH5046> me where<MH375> they are pasturing<MH7462a> <i>the flock.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then the man<MH376> said<MH559>, “They have moved<MH5265> from here<MH2088>; for I heard<MH8085> <i>them</i> say<MH559>, ‘Let’s go<MH1980> to Dothan<MH1886>.’” So Joseph<MH3130> went<MH1980> after his brothers<MH251> and found<MH4672> them at Dothan<MH1886>. <p class="hdg">The Plot against Joseph</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>When they saw<MH7200> him from a distance<MH7350>, and before<MH2962> he came<MH7126> closer<MH7126> to them, they plotted<MH5230> against<MH854> him to put<MH4191> him to<MH4191> death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>They said<MH559> to one<MH376> another<MH251>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Here<MH2009> comes<MH935> this<MH1976> dreamer<MH1167, 2472>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, come<MH1980> and let’s kill<MH2026> him, and throw<MH7993> him into one<MH259> of the pits<MH953a>; and we will say<MH559>, ‘A vicious<MH7451a> animal<MH2421b> devoured<MH398> him.’ Then we will see<MH7200> what<MH4100> will become<MH1961> of his dreams<MH2472>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But Reuben<MH7205> heard<MH8085> <i>this</i> and rescued<MH5337> him out of their hands<MH3027> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>by saying<MH559>, “Let’s not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>take<MH5221> his life<MH5315>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then Reuben<MH7205> said<MH559> to them, “Shed<MH8210> no<MH408> blood<MH1818>. Throw<MH7993> him into this<MH2088> pit<MH953a> that is in the wilderness<MH4057b>, but do not lay<MH7971> a hand<MH3027> on him”—so<MH4616> that<MH4616> <i>later</i> he might rescue<MH5337> him out of their hands<MH3027>, to return<MH7725> him to his father<MH1>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when<MH3512c> Joseph<MH3130> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>reached<MH935> his brothers<MH251>, that they stripped<MH6584> Joseph<MH3130> of his tunic<MH3801>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>multicolored<MH6446> tunic<MH3801> that was on him; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>and they took<MH3947> him and threw<MH7993> him into the pit<MH953a>. Now the pit<MH953a> was empty<MH7386>, without<MH369> any water<MH4325> in it. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Then they sat<MH3427> down<MH3427> to eat<MH398> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>a meal<MH3899>. But as they raised<MH5375> their eyes<MH5869> and looked<MH7200>, behold<MH2009>, a caravan<MH736> of Ishmaelites<MH3459> was coming<MH935> from Gilead<MH1568>, with their camels<MH1581> carrying<MH5375> labdanum<MH5219> resin<MH5219>, balsam<MH6875>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>myrrh<MH3910>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>on<MH1980> their way<MH1980> to bring<MH3381> <i>them</i> down<MH3381> to Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And Judah<MH3063> said<MH559> to his brothers<MH251>, “What<MH4100> profit<MH1215> is it for us to kill<MH2026> our brother<MH251> and cover<MH3680> up<MH3680> his blood<MH1818>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Come<MH1980>, and let’s sell<MH4376> him to the Ishmaelites<MH3459> and not lay<MH1961> our hands<MH3027> on him, for he is our brother<MH251>, our <i>own</i> flesh<MH1320>.” And his brothers<MH251> listened<MH8085> <i>to him.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then some<MH376> Midianite<MH4084> traders<MH5503> passed<MH5674a> by<MH5674a>, so they pulled<MH4900> <i>him</i> out<MH4900> and lifted<MH5927> Joseph<MH3130> out of the pit<MH953a>, and sold<MH4376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>him to the Ishmaelites<MH3459> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>twenty<MH6242> <i>shekels</i> of silver<MH3701>. So they brought<MH935> Joseph<MH3130> into Egypt<MH4714>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Now Reuben<MH7205> returned<MH7725> to the pit<MH953a>, and behold<MH2009>, Joseph<MH3130> was not in the pit<MH953a>; so he tore<MH7167> his garments<MH899b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>He returned<MH7725> to his brothers<MH251> and said<MH559>, “The boy<MH3206> is not <i>there;</i> as for me, where<MH575> am I to go<MH935>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>So they took<MH3947> Joseph’s<MH3130> tunic<MH3801>, and slaughtered<MH7819> a male<MH8163b> goat<MH8163b>, and dipped<MH2881> the tunic<MH3801> in the blood<MH1818>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>and they sent<MH7971> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>multicolored<MH6446> tunic<MH3801> and brought<MH935> it to their father<MH1> and said<MH559>, “We found<MH4672> this<MH2088>; please<MH4994> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>examine<MH5234> <i>it to see whether</i> it is your son’s<MH1121> tunic<MH3801> or<MH518> not.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Then he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>examined<MH5234> it and said<MH559>, “<i>It is</i> my son’s<MH1121> tunic<MH3801>. A vicious<MH7451a> animal<MH2421b> has devoured<MH398> him; Joseph<MH3130> has surely<MH2963> been torn<MH2963> to<MH2963> pieces<MH2963>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>So Jacob<MH3290> tore<MH7167> his clothes<MH8071>, and put<MH7760> on a sackcloth<MH8242> <i>undergarment</i> over his waist<MH4975>, and mourned<MH56> for his son<MH1121> many<MH7227a> days<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/37-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> his sons<MH1121> and all<MH3605> his daughters<MH1323> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> to comfort<MH5162> him, but he refused<MH3985> to be comforted<MH5162>.
