DEADLINE</span> <span class="date" style=" font-size: 20px; line-height: 17px; ">31 OCT. 2024</span> </span> </a> </div> </div> <div id="id7" class="cms-container cms-highlight-0" > <div class="row"> <div class="columns small-12 small-centered"> <div class="cms-common cms-article"> <h2 class="title-section aims_scope"> About MedGU </h2> <div class="body-section"> <h3 class="title-section">Vision</h3> <div class="body-section"> <div class="cms-sn-brands about_conference"> <div class="cms-richtext" > <p> <a href="https://association.medgu.org/" target="_blank"> <img loading="lazy" src="source/association-medgu.svg" alt="Mediterranean Geosciences Union (MedGU)" title="Mediterranean Geosciences Union (MedGU)" style="max-width: 400px"> </a> </p> <h4 class="title-section"><strong>Steps towards the creation of a Mediterranean Geosciences Union (MedGU)</strong></h4> <p> <a href="https://association.medgu.org/" target="_blank">Mediterranean Geosciences Union</a> (MedGU) aims to create a unique federation that brings together and represents the Mediterranean geoscience community specializing in the areas of Earth, planetary and space sciences. </p> <p> MedGU will be structured along the lines of AGU (American Geophysical Union) and EGU (European Geosciences Union). </p> <p> The MedGU is described in further depth in this publication published in <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42990-022-00075-y" target="_blank">Mediterranean Geoscience Reviews</a> (Springer). </p> <p> The plan is to establish a large organization for the Mediterranean region that is more influential than any one local geoscience society with the objective of fostering fundamental geoscience research, as well as applied research that addresses key societal and environmental challenges. </p> <p> MedGU’s overarching vision is to contribute to the realization of a sustainable future for humanity and for the planet. </p> <p> The creation of this union will give the Earth sciences more influence in policy-making and in the implementation of solutions to preserve the natural environment and to create more sustainable societies for the people living in the Mediterranean region. It is hoped that the union will also provide opportunities to Mediterranean geoscientists to undertake interdisciplinary collaborative research. MedGU plans to recognize the work of the most active geoscientists with a number of awards and medals. </p> <p> Although MedGU has not yet been officially inaugurated and is still in its initial five-year phase, its first annual meeting was organized in November 2021 in Istanbul (<a href="https://2021.medgu.org" target="_blank">MedGU-21</a>), the second meeting took place in Marrakech (<a href="https://2022.medgu.org" target="_blank">MedU-22</a>), and the third meeting was held in Istanbul (<a href="https://2023.medgu.org" target="_blank">MedGU-23</a>). This has provided a forum to achieve a consensus for the formation of this non-profit international union of geoscientists. Membership will be open to individuals who have a professional engagement with the Earth, planetary and space sciences and related studies, including students and retired seniors. </p> <p> Nabil Khélifi (MedGU Founder, Germany), Attila Çiner (MedGU Interim President, Türkiye), and Marc Oliva (MedGU-24 Chair, Spain) have taken an ambitious approach to the launch of the <a href="index.php?p=welcome">MedGU 4<sup>th</sup></a> Annual Meeting (<a href="https://2024.medgu.org">MedGU-24</a>) and hope to develop it the near future into the largest international geoscience event in the Mediterranean and the broader MENA region. Its mission is to support geoscientists based in this region by establishing a Global Geoscience Congress. </p> <p> It is expected that hundreds of participants from all over the world will attend this fourth MedGU Annual Meeting 2024, making it one of the largest and most prominent geosciences event in the region. The meeting’s sessions will cover a wide range of topics with more details available on the <a href="index.php?p=tracks">Conference Tracks</a>. </p> <p> This fourth MedGU Annual Meeting 2024 will have a "hybrid" format, with both in-person and virtual participation. Recipients of awards are selected by a dedicated committee of experienced scientific committee members based on the pre-conference evaluation by technical committee members and session chairs during the conference. Awards recognize outstanding works from each <a href="index.php?p=tracks">Conference Track</a> from the pool of accepted papers presented by authors in the in-person and online sessions. The award evaluation committee selects the best papers based on a number of criteria, including the importance and novelty of any results obtained, technical excellence, and significance to the research community. This proceedings paper will be peer reviewed after it has been checked for plagiarism using <a href="http://www.ithenticate.com/" target="_blank">iThenticate</a> software. If a plagiarism content is observed by the conference proceedings editors (see <a href="index.php?p=special-issue">Publications</a> and <a href="index.php?p=committees">Scientific Committee</a>), you will be asked to rewrite and resubmit it. If the resubmitted version is still more than 20% plagiarized, it will be rejected. </li> <li> We suggest taking this <a href="https://www.springernature.com/gp/editors/editor-courses/plagiarism#c18669950?utm_source=sn&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=RMarketing&utm_campaign=AEXS_4_SE01_GL_Editor_Tutorials_sn" target="_blank">Course on Plagiarism</a> to acquire useful skills in preventing plagiarism. This course, consisting of four modules, is free and offers a thorough introduction to the topic. </li> <li> To process your conference paper (extended abstract) on time and to ease the reviewer's tasks, we recommend you use free editing services such as <a href="https://www.grammarly.com/" target="_blank">Grammarly</a>. That way, the reviewers could concentrate on the science, not editing typos. This will also help us to publish the proceeding books much faster. </li> <li>After peer review and if the conference paper is accepted by the editors, you will be asked to revise and correct it. After resubmission of the revised version, the editors will re-check the paper for quality and plagiarism and, if accepted, the corresponding author will be requested to sign Springer’s Consent-to-Publish form, prerequisite for publication in the conference proceedings. Please note that there may be more than one round of peer review (see <a href="index.php?p=important-dates">Important Dates</a>). </li> <li>After evaluating all presentations during the conference and taking into account the comments of the reviewers and editors during the pre-conference evaluation process, the authors of the best papers will be invited after the conference to submit an extended version (8000 to 12000 words) of their conference papers for publication in a special issue of one of our partner journals (see <a href="index.php?p=special-issue">Publications</a>). Publishing your short paper in the conference proceedings does not prevent you from submitting the full version of the same work to one of our partner journals after the conference. </li> <li>Your proceedings (short) paper must be improved based on the conference review process and on the discussion at the conference. At least 60% of the material in the journal paper (full version) should be new and the exposition improved. In general, conference papers are based on preliminary results which are open for discussion. However, journal articles should contain finished research results with an in-depth discussion and clear conclusions. </li> <li>Authors of short papers accepted for publication in the proceedings and who do not plan to attend the conference or present online will not be invited to submit to the special issues. </li> <li>It will be possible to present accepted studies online without attending the conference in person. Your conference documents will be sent to your email after the conference. </p> <br/> </div> <h4 class="title-section bull"> Plan 3: Register to publish in the (indexed) proceedings without presenting/attending </h4> <div class="body-section"> <ul class="bullet-0"> <li> If your extended abstract (short paper) is accepted, it may be published in the conference proceedings by Springer (ASTI series, indexed in Scopus) even if you are not attending the conference. </li> <li> In this case, a fee of 200 EUR / 820 AED (150 EUR / 615 AED for participants from low and lower middle income countries) must be paid before the deadline (see <a href="index.php?p=important-dates">Important Dates</a>). The fee covers the costs of the editorial handling, peer-review evaluation, publication, and indexation of your paper (see <a href="index.php?p=author-guidelines" class="color1">Author Guidelines</a> and <a href="index.php?p=special-issue" class="color1">Publications</a> for more details). </li> <li> Your extended abstract that will be published in the proceedings will not be included in the final conference program. However, to be considered for publication in the proceedings, at least one author of each accepted extended abstract must register online and pay the registration fees by the deadlines (see <a
