It provides the opportunity to simultaneously protect natural habitat at scale, preserve wildlife found nowhere else in the country, and safeguard the subsistence needs, sacred lands and cultural traditions of Alaska’s Indigenous peoples.</p> <p> </p> <h2 id="climate">Protecting wild Alaska is essential in the fight against the climate crisis<br /> <img decoding="async" class="alignnone" src="https://alaskawild.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Art-Wolfe-blog-1.jpg" /></h2> <p>And as we look to slow the advance of climate change, there is no better opportunity to keep carbon in the ground than in Alaska. Scientists have determined that in order to keep warming below 2°C globally, <a href="https://www.martinbreum.dk/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/McGlade-Ekins-2014-The-geographical-distribution-of-fossil-fuels-unused-when-limiting-global-warming-to-2-%C2%B0C.pdf">Arctic oil reserves must remain undeveloped</a>. Statewide, Alaska’s public lands and waters are home to more than 60 percent of the total carbon stored on our nation’s federal lands.</p> <p>Alaska’s oil and gas economy has benefited its people, communities and government for decades, however, today the short and long-term costs of these policies are simply too great. Climate change is being more acutely felt in Alaska, especially in the Arctic, which is warming at three times the rate of the rest of the world. Threats to food security, traditional ways of life, cultural practices and sustainable industries are growing rapidly due to increasingly visible impacts like melting sea ice, thawing permafrost, and changes to animal migration patterns and abundance. Wildfire season is growing longer and coastal erosion is literally causing villages to fall into the sea. For many Alaska Native peoples, living off the land continues to play a defining role in their cultures and traditions.</p> <p>Alaska Wilderness League works most closely with the Gwich’in people, who have lived along the migratory route of the Porcupine caribou herd in Alaska and Canada for generations. Home to endangered polar bears, musk oxen, caribou, Arctic foxes, walrus, narwals, bowhead whales, seals and countless species of migratory birds, the Alaskan Arctic is truly a wildlife sanctuary. In recent years for example, commercial fishing, tourism and recreation have become the fastest growing job sectors in Southeast Alaska. Bristol Bay is the largest commercial sockeye salmon producing region in the world. <a href="https://www.alaskawild.org/places-we-protect/chugach-national-forest/">The Chugach National Forest</a> is located in Anchorage’s “backyard,” receives more than a million visitors each year and is a hiker’s paradise that offers hundreds of miles of maintained trails.</p> <p>In return, many businesses working within those industries have taken an active role in standing up for the preservation of Alaska’s public lands and waters — and not simple because it’s good for their bottom line, but because it’s the right thing to do.
