The Hebrew word most commonly translated as "pit" is "bôr," which can refer to a cistern, a well, or a dungeon. In the New Testament, the Greek word "phrear" is used similarly. The concept of a pit often symbolizes danger, entrapment, or divine judgment.

Literal Pits

1. Cisterns and Wells: Pits were often used as water storage systems in ancient Israel. In Genesis 37:24, Joseph's brothers cast him into a pit, which was an empty cistern: "And they took him and threw him into the pit. Now the pit was empty; there was no water in it" . This pit was intended to hold water but was dry at the time, making it a suitable temporary prison.

2. Dungeons and Prisons: Pits were also used as places of confinement. Jeremiah was cast into a cistern that served as a dungeon: "So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah into it with ropes. Now there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud" (Jeremiah 38:6).

Metaphorical Pits

1. Symbol of Death and Sheol: The pit is often used metaphorically to represent Sheol, the realm of the dead. In Psalm 30:3, the psalmist praises God for deliverance from death: "O LORD, You pulled me up from Sheol; You spared me from descending into the Pit" . Here, the pit symbolizes the grave or the abode of the dead.

2. Divine Judgment: The pit is frequently associated with divine judgment and punishment. In Isaiah 24:17-18, the prophet warns of impending judgment: "Terror and pit and snare await you, O dwellers of the earth. Whoever flees the sound of terror will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs from the pit will be caught in the snare" . This passage illustrates the inescapable nature of God's judgment.

3. Despair and Deliverance: The pit can also symbolize a state of despair or distress from which one seeks deliverance. In Psalm 40:1-2, David recounts his deliverance: "I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry. He lifted me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay; He set my feet upon a rock, and made my footsteps firm" . This imagery conveys God's power to rescue and restore.

Theological Implications

The imagery of the pit in Scripture underscores themes of human vulnerability, divine justice, and the hope of redemption. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the reality of divine judgment, while also highlighting God's mercy and the possibility of salvation. The pit, whether as a literal place of confinement or a metaphor for spiritual peril, calls believers to trust in God's deliverance and to seek His righteousness.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Pit
[HELL]
ATS Bible Dictionary
Pit
A reservoir, either natural or artificial, for water.
