She received her PhD in American art from Stanford University in 2000 and subsequently served as an assistant professor at Harvard University for five years. </p> <p class="style6">In 2004 she published her first book, <em>Seeing the Unspeakable: The Art of Kara Walker</em>, with Duke University Press. Her second book, <em>Portraits of a People: Picturing African Americans in the Nineteenth Century</em>, was published by University of Washington Press in 2006 as an exhibition catalog to accompany a travelling exhibition of the same name.
