and the commander<MH8269> of his army<MH6635> was Sisera<MH5516>, who<MH834> lived<MH3427> in Harosheth-hagoyim<MH2800, 1471>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>The sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> cried<MH6817> out<MH6817> to the LORD<MH3068>; for he had nine<MH8672> hundred<MH3967> iron<MH1270> chariots<MH7393>, and he oppressed<MH3905> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> severely<MH2394> for twenty<MH6242> years<MH8141>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now Deborah<MH1683>, a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>prophetess<MH5031>, the wife<MH802> of Lappidoth<MH3941>, was judging<MH8199> Israel<MH3478> at that time<MH6256>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>She used to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>sit<MH3427> under<MH8478> the palm<MH8560> tree<MH8560> of Deborah<MH1683> between<MH996> Ramah<MH7414> and Bethel<MH1008> in the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Ephraim<MH669>; and the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to her for judgment<MH4941>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now she sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> and summoned<MH7121> Barak<MH1301> the son<MH1121> of Abinoam<MH42> from Kedesh-naphtali<MH6943, 5321>, and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>The LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, has indeed commanded<MH6680>, &#8216;Go<MH1980> and march<MH4900> to Mount<MH2022> Tabor<MH8396>, and take<MH3947> with you ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> from the sons<MH1121> of Naphtali<MH5321> and from the sons<MH1121> of Zebulun<MH2074>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>I will draw<MH4900> out<MH4900> to you Sisera<MH5516>, the commander<MH8269> of Jabin&#8217;s<MH2985> army<MH6635>, with his chariots<MH7393> and his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>many<MH1995> <i>troops</i> to the river<MH5158a> Kishon<MH7028>, and I will hand<MH5414, 3027> him over<MH5414> to you.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Barak<MH1301> said<MH559> to her, &#8220;If<MH518> you will go<MH1980> with me, then I will go<MH1980>; but if<MH518> you will not go<MH1980> with me, I will not go<MH1980>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>She said<MH559>, &#8220;I will certainly<MH1980> go<MH1980> with you; however<MH657, 3588>, the fame<MH8597> shall not be yours on the journey<MH1870> that you are about to take<MH1980>, for the LORD<MH3068> will sell<MH4376> Sisera<MH5516> into the hand<MH3027> of a woman<MH802>.&#8221; Then Deborah<MH1683> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and went<MH1980> with Barak<MH1301> to Kedesh<MH6943>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Barak<MH1301> summoned<MH2199> Zebulun<MH2074> and Naphtali<MH5321> to Kedesh<MH6943>, and ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>with him; Deborah<MH1683> also went<MH5927> up<MH5927> with him. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now Heber<MH2268> the Kenite<MH7017> had separated<MH6504> himself from the Kenites<MH7014a>, from the sons<MH1121> of Hobab<MH2246> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>father-in-law<MH2860b> of Moses<MH4872>, and had pitched<MH5186> his tent<MH168> as far<MH5704> away as the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>oak<MH436> in Zaanannim<MH6815>, which<MH834> is near<MH854> Kedesh<MH6943>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then they told<MH5046> Sisera<MH5516> that Barak<MH1301> the son<MH1121> of Abinoam<MH42> had gone<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Mount<MH2022> Tabor<MH8396>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Sisera<MH5516> summoned<MH2199> all<MH3605> his chariots<MH7393>, nine<MH8672> hundred<MH3967> iron<MH1270> chariots<MH7393>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim<MH2800, 1471> to the river<MH5158a> Kishon<MH7028>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then Deborah<MH1683> said<MH559> to Barak<MH1301>, &#8220;Arise<MH6965>! For this<MH2088> is the day<MH3117> on which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has handed<MH5414, 3027> Sisera<MH5516> over<MH5414> to you; <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>behold<MH3808>, the LORD<MH3068> has gone<MH3318> out<MH3318> before<MH6440> you.&#8221; So Barak<MH1301> went<MH3381> down<MH3381> from Mount<MH2022> Tabor<MH8396> with ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> following<MH310> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>routed<MH2000> Sisera<MH5516> and all<MH3605> <i>his</i> chariots<MH7393> and all<MH3605> <i>his</i> army<MH4264> with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719> before<MH6440> Barak<MH1301>; and Sisera<MH5516> got<MH3381> down<MH3381> from <i>his</i> chariot<MH4818> and fled<MH5127> on foot<MH7272>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But Barak<MH1301> pursued<MH7291, 310> the chariots<MH7393> and the army<MH4264> as far<MH5704> as Harosheth-hagoyim<MH2800, 1471>, and all<MH3605> the army<MH4264> of Sisera<MH5516> fell<MH5307> by the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>; not even<MH5704> one<MH259> was left<MH7604>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now Sisera<MH5516> fled<MH5127> on foot<MH7272> to the tent<MH168> of Jael<MH3278> the wife<MH802> of Heber<MH2268> the Kenite<MH7017>, because<MH3588> <i>there was</i> peace<MH7965> between<MH996> Jabin<MH2985> the king<MH4428> of Hazor<MH2674> and the house<MH1004> of Heber<MH2268> the Kenite<MH7017>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And Jael<MH3278> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH7122> Sisera<MH5516>, and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Turn<MH5493> aside<MH5493>, my master<MH113>, turn<MH5493> aside<MH5493> to me! Do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>.&#8221; So he turned<MH5493> aside<MH5493> to her into the tent<MH168>, and she covered<MH3680> him with a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>rug<MH8063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Please<MH4994> give<MH8248> me a little<MH4592> water<MH4325> to<MH8248> drink<MH8248>, for I am<MH6770> thirsty<MH6770>.&#8221; So she opened<MH6605a> a leather<MH4997> bottle<MH4997> of milk<MH2461> and gave<MH8248> him a<MH8248> drink<MH8248>; then she covered<MH3680> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to her, &#8220;Stand<MH5975> in the doorway<MH6607> of the tent<MH168>, and it shall be if<MH518> anyone<MH376> comes<MH935> and inquires<MH7592> of you, and says<MH559>, &#8216;Is<MH3426> there<MH3426> anyone<MH376> here<MH6311>?&#8217; that you shall say<MH559>, &#8216;No<MH369>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But Jael<MH3278>, Heber&#8217;s<MH2268> wife<MH802>, took<MH3947, 7760> a tent<MH168> peg<MH3489> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>a hammer<MH4717> in her hand<MH3027>, and went<MH935> secretly<MH3909> to him and drove<MH8628> the peg<MH3489> into his temple<MH7541>, and it went<MH6795> through<MH6795> into the ground<MH776>; for he was<MH7290a> sound<MH7290a> asleep<MH7290a> and exhausted<MH5888>.
