It provides food which is the foremost important need of any living organism on earth. Food and related activities to acquire food vary from region to region and community to community. Hence, tribals form the hunters, gatherers, primitive agriculturists and so many other categories on the basis of their economy. Forests have remained the usual abode of the tribals in most parts of the world, particularly in India. Hilly tracts with the forest covers have become permanent shelter grounds for them due to obvious and non-apparent politico-economic reasons. Forest provides a suitable hunting ground and definitely a gatherers’ paradise for most of the hunting and food-gathering tribes of India. It is the call of the time to have sensible exploitation of the forest resources along with substantial forestation in the same area for keeping the balance of means and consumption in the forest. About a couple of decades ago the population was less and the forests were plenteous in quantity and variety both. Now, the situation is almost reverse. Forest reserves have gone down, while the population has increasingly gone up. The tribals are still the greatest friends of the forests and coexistence of both is essential. The Bhilala and the Patelia of some areas of Western Madhya Pradesh are deemed to be the good cultivators in the region due to their hard work, adoption of new agricultural techniques and use of fertilizers.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Dr. Amit They still bear the identity of tribes as they practice the rules followed by their ancestors following an independent route of lifestyle, but frequently facing the forces of market economy. They had been the icon of ecological balance and applied their own wisdom or logic in harnessing and consuming natural resources, their every step of life support was thus 'Eco Logic'. These tribal groups had a deep relation with the forest which controlled their material, social as well as spiritual needs. But gradual thinning out of forest cover has put forward a number of problems before these simple and less-consuming groups. This article is engaged to discern the interactions of tribal, specifically Santal with sub-humid deciduous forest tracts of Jangalmahal area of West Bengal. This paper is an attempt to re-evaluate the extent of symbiotic relation of the tribal community with forest of the area selected on the basis of available information.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Significance of Forests in the Tribal Habitation of Jangalmahal Area in West Bengal","attachmentId":56030559,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/36137825/Significance_of_Forests_in_the_Tribal_Habitation_of_Jangalmahal_Area_in_West_Bengal","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/36137825/Significance_of_Forests_in_the_Tribal_Habitation_of_Jangalmahal_Area_in_West_Bengal"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="3" data-entity-id="34802026" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/34802026/Forest_Resource_An_Appraisal_of_Mandla_District_Madhya_Pradesh">Forest Resource: An Appraisal of Mandla District, Madhya Pradesh</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="69207089" href="https://independent.academia.edu/GhanshyamPrasadJhariya">Ghanshyam Prasad Jhariya</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Forest comprises a unique gift of nature to human civilization and plays a significance role in the national economy of a developing country like India. Loss of forest by the increasing population and consequently increasing demands for forest based resource has been an issue of great concern in recent decades. Taking a view of the current scenario of forest resource the present study is an attempt to highlight the forest cover and access the forest resource based in Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh. The district is one of the major tribal dominated districts in Madhya Pradesh. According to forest survey of India there was 48.79 percent forest cover of the total geographical area of the district in 2011. The district has been facing lots of problem related to degradation of forest and passes as a severe threat to the present status of biodiversity.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Forest Resource: An Appraisal of Mandla District, Madhya Pradesh","attachmentId":54661246,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/34802026/Forest_Resource_An_Appraisal_of_Mandla_District_Madhya_Pradesh","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/34802026/Forest_Resource_An_Appraisal_of_Mandla_District_Madhya_Pradesh"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="4" data-entity-id="39385746" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/39385746/SACRED_GROVES_AS_CENTRES_OF_CULTURAL_AND_BIODIVERSITY_CONSERVATION_A_CASE_STUDY_OF_JHABUA_DISTRICT_OF_MADHYA_PRADESH">SACRED GROVES AS CENTRES OF CULTURAL AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION: A CASE STUDY OF JHABUA DISTRICT OF MADHYA PRADESH</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="3287933" href="https://gujaratuniversity.academia.edu/HiteshkumarSolanki">Hitesh A Solanki</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">International Journal of Recent Scientific Research, 2019</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Sacred Groves, patches of natural forests, a manifestation of nature worship offer ecological, environmental and socio-cultural functions to the local communities. This paper is based on the study of three sacred groves in Jhabua ,a district in Madhya Pradesh that is demographically dominated by the Bhil tribe and brings out the present status of these groves in terms of ecological and cultural importance. This community has been protecting these groves over decades in the honour of their deities and ancestral spirits where they perform their religious rituals. The interconnection between the Bhil community and nature since time immemorial is indicated here. There is evidence now that the clans in Bhil tribe have been associated with the worship of specific species sacred to them and these species happen to be of “ecological keystone value’’. It also suggests some solutions to biodiversity conservation in regards to the present day threats and depletive factors affecting the sacred groves.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button The introductory chapter defined the nature and character of European countries generally and Great Britain particularly. There were two broad themes of debate in the context of the idea of conservation of forest and wildlife. The first debate was based on the pre-colonial equilibrium between nature and society. The second debate illustrated the character of colonial Forest policies (commercialisation or conservation). For better understanding, the author divided the India's Environmental History into six phases, namely Pre-colonial phase 1790s (equilibrium between society and natural resources), Pre-forest Act 1790s-1870s (systematic exploitation of nature), Post-forest Act 1870s-1940s (implementation of Indian Forest Act 1878 and a period of debate between conservation and commercialisation), Post-independence phase-until the 1980s (development during Fifth Five year plan), Post-forest Conservation Act-until 2006 (more infrastructure more extraction of Forest) and Vote bank politics era 2006 onwards (implementation of TSP, restoration of Forest Rights Act 2006). The second chapter 'Exploitation of Forests, 1793-1882' was divided into two categories. The first part of the chapter discusses the tribal's traditional method of agriculture (shifting cultivation and settled cultivation) and production for domestic consumption (pre-1793). The author argued that the tribals were the conservator of resources due to their non-commercialised nature of forest resources. The second part had defined the commercialised agenda of the Colonial government from 1792 to 1882. The author here provided the statistical analysis of extraction of timber and sandalwood, plantation of coffee and tea, Britishowned Iron making and sugar boiling industry and introduction of railways in Madras Presidency which fulfilled their commercialised nature to larger extent. The third chapter 'Conservation or Commercialisation, 1882-1947' defined the intention of colonial government with the implementation of Madras Forest Act 1882 which came into force in 1883. The chapter begins with a question of whether the British government was in favour of Conservation or Commercialisation? The Forest Act restricted the lifestyles of tribals, namely</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Velayutham Saravanan, Environmental History and Tribals in Modern India. In the state of Arunachal Pradesh as a whole and Kurung Kumey district in particular, tribal communities reside in close touch with forest and thus, dependent on it. That is why, it’s a great significance to study their do’s and don’ts in order to propose better forest and environmental management interventions considering options for enhancing livelihoods of the tribal communities in Kurung Kumey district. In this study, three tribal communities of the district i.e., Nyishi, Bangru and Puroik have been purposively selected for questionnaire survey. Data has been taken into consideration from two vital viewpoint i.e., livelihood pattern and forest dependence, assuming that all tribes are dependent on forest resources for their livelihood. Through this study, it is found that Nyishi and Bangru tribes are economically better-off in terms of land ownership and income per capita respectively. Forestry practice provides little share in their total income though Nyishi tribe has the highest land per capita in forestry sector as well as in agricultural sector. On the other hand, Puroik tribe’s living standard is comparatively very low as their income and land per capita is low, and they are more dependent on forest. Bangru tribe keeps the comparative middle status in almost every sector. A variety of other social and environmental factors were also collected and thoroughly analysed which may be useful for further research in this region.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Forest as a Source of Livelihood for the Tribals of Kurung Kumey District, Arunachal Pradesh","attachmentId":35068418,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/8717959/Forest_as_a_Source_of_Livelihood_for_the_Tribals_of_Kurung_Kumey_District_Arunachal_Pradesh","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/8717959/Forest_as_a_Source_of_Livelihood_for_the_Tribals_of_Kurung_Kumey_District_Arunachal_Pradesh"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":60308287,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":60308287,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_60308287" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
