The name "Jeshua" is a variant of "Joshua," meaning "The LORD is salvation." Jeshua is most notably recognized as a high priest during the time of the return from the Babylonian exile, playing a crucial role in the restoration of the Jewish community and the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem.

Biblical References:

1. Jeshua the High Priest:
Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, served as the high priest during the return from Babylonian captivity under the leadership of Zerubbabel. He is prominently mentioned in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. In Ezra 2:2, Jeshua is listed among the leaders who returned to Jerusalem: "They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah." Jeshua's role was pivotal in the spiritual and religious re-establishment of the Jewish people.

In Ezra 3:2, Jeshua, along with Zerubbabel, began the work of rebuilding the altar of the God of Israel: "Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along with Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God."

Jeshua's leadership is further highlighted in the book of Zechariah, where he is depicted as a symbol of the coming Messiah. Zechariah 3:8 states, "Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, you and your companions seated before you, who are indeed men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring My servant, the Branch."

2. Jeshua in Nehemiah:
In the book of Nehemiah, Jeshua is mentioned as one of the leaders who helped in the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. Nehemiah 7:7 lists him among the leaders who returned with Zerubbabel: "They came with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah."

3. Jeshua in the Lineage of Priests:
Jeshua is also noted in the genealogical records as a descendant of Aaron, the brother of Moses, thus affirming his rightful place in the priestly line. In 1 Chronicles 24:11, the name Jeshua appears in the division of the priestly duties: "The ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah."

4. Jeshua in the Book of Chronicles:
In 1 Chronicles 9:10, Jeshua is mentioned among the priests who returned to Jerusalem: "From the priests: Jedaiah; Jehoiarib; Jachin; Azariah son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the official in charge of the house of God; Adaiah son of Jeroham, the son of Pashhur, the son of Malchijah; and Maasai son of Adiel, the son of Jahzerah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Meshillemith, the son of Immer."

Significance:
Jeshua's role as a high priest during a critical period of Jewish history underscores the importance of spiritual leadership in the restoration and renewal of the covenant community. His efforts in rebuilding the altar and the temple highlight the centrality of worship and adherence to the Law of Moses. Jeshua's life and ministry serve as a foreshadowing of the ultimate High Priest, Jesus Christ, who fulfills the role of mediator between God and humanity.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Jeshua
same as Joshua
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Jeshua
(a saviour), another form of the name of Joshua of Jesus.

Joshua the son of Nun.
