but the word which they heard did not profit them, not having been mingled with faith on the part of those who heard.<p> <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>For we who believed do enter into rest, even as He said, "As I swore in My wrath, they shall not enter into My rest; although the works were finished from <i>the</i> founding of a world."<p> <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>For He hath spoken somewhere concerning the seventh <i>day</i> thus: "And God rested on the seventh day from all His works;" <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>and, in this <i>place</i>, again: "They shall not enter into My rest." <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Since, therefore, it remains for some to enter into it, and those to whom the Gospel was formerly proclaimed entered not in because of unbelief,<p> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>again He designateth a certain day, "To-day" (saying in David, after so long a time, as has been before said), "To-day, if ye hear His voice, harden not your hearts."<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For, had Joshua given them rest, He would not afterward have spoken of another day. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Consequently, there remains a sabbath-keeping for the people of God. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For He Who entered into His rest, Himself also rested from his works, as God <i>did</i> from His Own. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Let us, therefore, give diligence to enter into that rest, that no one fall after the same example of unbelief.<p> <A name="13"></a><p class="hdg">The Living Word<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../2_timothy/3.htm#10">2 Timothy 3:10–17</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>For the word of God <i>is</i> living, and effectual, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to a dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and <i>is</i> a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And there is no creature that is not manifest in His presence; but all things are naked and laid bare to the eyes of Him with Whom <i>is</i> our account.<p> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/hebrews/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Having, therefore, a great High Priest, Who hath passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast the confession;
