Step out to explore the city while you’re here – or stay a few extra days to explore the surrounding area, or hop on a train to the capital city.</p> <h3>Themes </h3> This Faraday Discussion meeting will focus on the scientific questions, challenges and areas for future development to advance polymer science. It will comprise the following interrelated themes: (i) utilisation of novel feedstocks and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in making polymers; methods to control monomer sequence and polymer architectures for function and application; polymerisation processes, including data-driven design and manufacturing processes; recycling and depolymerisation methods, including biodegradation, to improve circularity.<br> <br> <strong>Novel feedstocks</strong><br> This session will focus on the chemistry and processes to make monomers and to functionalise natural biopolymers. It will include presentations on the use and benefits for biomass derived monomers, such as those from carbohydrates, triglycerides, lignin and terpenes, with a particular focus on use of co-products and wastes in polymer production. <br> <br> <strong>Catalysis</strong><br> This session will investigate how catalysis can be used to make polymerisation processes more efficient and more sustainable, and to control polymer sequences, stereo- and regiochemistry, so as to enable innovative material and properties. Discussion topics will include organocatalysis, metal-based catalysis and heterogeneous catalysis, the synthesis of novel catalytic systems, the elucidation of catalytic reactions using experimental and computational methods (including in-situ reaction monitoring), and the impact of residual catalytic species on polymer properties.<br> <br> <strong>Polymerisation processes and computational methods to control structure</strong><br> This session will discuss how to regulate, control and effect control over polymer sequences, structures, architectures and molar mass distributions by using external stimuli and process control.  The session will also discuss how data and machine learning-driven approaches can help to improve polymerisation processes.  The types of chemistry to be discussed will include ‘triggers/switches and stimuli’, methods to control molar mass distributions, polymer syntheses in flow, and computational approaches to optimise structures and performances. <br> <br> <strong>Closing the loop – the chemistry of  depolymerisation, polymer recycling and environmental degradation</strong><br> This session will examine the chemistry and fundamental science challenges associated with the different end-life options for polymers.  Discussion topics will include chemical recycling, designing polymer structures for efficient mechanical recycling, polymer upcycling and re-purposing, depolymerisation kinetics/thermodynamics and mechanisms, depolymerisation catalysis, polymer composting and biodegradation. The environmental chemistry of polymers will also be discussed. After completing a postdoctoral research position in the University of Minnesota’s Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science he joined the Chemistry faculty at Minnesota in 1997. He is currently the McKnight Presidential Endowed Chair in Chemistry and leads a research group focused on the synthesis and self-assembly of multifunctional polymers. In addition to his teaching and research responsibilities, Marc is currently the editor-in-chief of Macromolecules and the director of the Center for Sustainable Polymers headquartered at the University of Minnesota. </p> </div> <br class="clear"> <div class="bio-block "> <img src="/events/download/Image/74ab0b65-fc1c-4d86-b96b-d99d5d66c799" class="bio"> <span class="heading">Katja Loos, University of Groningen, Netherlands</span> <p> Katja Loos is Professor at the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials of the University of Groningen, holding the chair of Macromolecular Chemistry and New Polymeric Materials. She currently serves as the President of the European Polymer Federation for the period of 2023 to 2025.<br /> <br /> She specialized in Organic Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry during her university studies at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität in Mainz, Germany and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, USA. She moved into the field of Enzymatic Polymerizations during her doctoral research at the University of Bayreuth, Germany and the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brasil. After a postdoctoral research stay at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY, USA she started an independent research group at the University of Groningen.<br /> <br /> Katja Loos pioneered the field of enzymatic polymerization, especially the biocatalytic synthesis of polysaccharides and polyamides, and the synthesis and self-assembly of PVDF containing block copolymers. Already early in her career Katja Loos was awarded two travel scholarships of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and she received the very prestigious Feodor Lynen Fellowship award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to conduct her postdoctoral research. During her independent research career, on the basis of her unique approach in combining modern polymer synthesis, (macro) molecular self-assembly, and utilization of the arising structures the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded her the prestigious VIDI grant in 2009 and VICI grant in 2014 and the German Research Council (DFG) the Eleonore Trefftz guest professorship within the scope of its excellency initiative. Among others she was awarded the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Award and the Team Science Award of the Dutch Research Council (NWO). In 2023 she received the title of Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.<br /> <br /> Katja Loos is a Fellow of the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). </p> </div> <br class="clear"> <div class="bio-block "> <img src="/events/download/Image/a00ead1e-f930-452e-85d5-ba0873059710" class="bio"> <span class="heading">Kyoko Nozaki, The University of Tokyo, Japan</span> <p> Kyoko Nozaki has been Professor of Chemistry and Biotechnology at The University of Tokyo since 2003. She received her B.S. and Doctor Degree in Industrial Chemistry from Kyoto University where she served as a faculty for 1991~2002. Her research interest has been focused on development of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for polymerization and depolymerization. Deep mechanistic understanding is characteristic for her research style. Her achievements were recognized as the International Awards L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Sciences in 2021, IUPAC Distinguished Women in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in 2021, Medal with Purple Ribbon from the Japanese Cabinet Office in 2022, and Commendation for Science and Technology by MEXT, Japan in 2022. She has served as International member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA) and Foreign member of the Royal Society (UK) since 2024.  </p> </div> <br class="clear"> <div class="bio-block "> <img src="/events/download/Image/7c52cde3-c06c-4577-ab9e-72b4748197c4" class="bio"> <span class="heading">Karin Odelius, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden</span> <p> Karin Odelius received her Ph.D. in 2008 and was appointed Professor in Fibre and Polymer Technology – Biobased functional materials at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden in 2022. She leads a research group focused on the synthesis of sustainable polymers, their structure-property relationships and chemical recycling. She is the vice Director of first and second cycle studies at the School of Engineering Sciences in Chemistry, Biotechnology and Health at KTH and was elected Teacher of the year at KTH in 2016. She also currently serves as an associate editor for the journal Materials Today Chemistry. </p> </div> <br class="clear"> <div class="bio-block "> <img src="/events/download/Image/3e93fafc-7ac0-4f82-9ae2-3c02019cf0b0" class="bio"> <span class="heading">Rachel O'Reilly, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom</span> <p> Rachel O’Reilly is currently a Professor of Chemistry and Pro-vice chancellor for Research at the University of Birmingham. She got her first degree from the University of Cambridge and went on to complete her PhD at Imperial College, London in 2003. She then moved to the US to under the joint direction of Professors Craig J. Hawker and Karen L. Wooley. In 2006 she took up a Royal Society Fellowship at the University of Cambridge and then in 2009 she moved to the University of Warwick and in 2012 was promoted to full professor. She moved to Birmingham in 2018 and was Head of School until August 2023. Her group undertakes research in the area of catalysis, responsive polymers, nanostructure characterization and DNA nanomaterials. She has published almost 250 papers to date and has received a number of awards. In 2020 she was awarded the RSC Corday-Morgan Prize and in 2022 she was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society.
