Here, we drive the van der Pol oscillator with an external time-dependent force to reach the limit cycle in a given finite time. Specifically, we are interested in minimising the non-conservative contribution to the work when driving the system from a given initial point on the phase plane to any final point belonging to the limit cycle. There appears a speed limit inequality, which expresses a trade-off between the connection time and cost -- in terms of the non-conservative work. We show how the above results can be { generalized to the broader family of non-linear oscillators given by} the Li茅nard equation. Finally, we also look into the problem of minimising the total work done by the external force. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('2407.03435v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('2407.03435v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 10 October, 2024; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 3 July, 2024; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> July 2024. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">13 pages, 6 figures; minor revision, new perspectives added; accepted for publication in Chaos</span> </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Journal ref:</span> Chaos 34, 103146 (2024) </p> </li> <li class="arxiv-result"> <div class="is-marginless"> <p class="list-title is-inline-block"><a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2310.19913">arXiv:2310.19913</a> <span> [<a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2310.19913">pdf</a>, <a href="https://arxiv.org/format/2310.19913">other</a>] </span> </p> <div class="tags is-inline-block"> <span class="tag is-small is-link tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Statistical Mechanics">cond-mat.stat-mech</span> <span class="tag is-small is-grey tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Mathematical Physics">math-ph</span> </div> <div class="is-inline-block" style="margin-left: 0.5rem"> <div class="tags has-addons"> <span class="tag is-dark is-size-7">doi</span> <span class="tag is-light is-size-7"><a class="" href="https://doi.org/10.1088/1402-4896/ad317b">10.1088/1402-4896/ad317b <i class="fa fa-external-link" aria-hidden="true"></i></a></span> </div> </div> </div> <p class="title is-5 mathjax"> Stochastic resetting with refractory periods: pathway formulation and exact results </p> <p class="authors"> <span class="search-hit">Authors:</span> <a href="/search/math-ph?searchtype=author&query=Garc%C3%ADa-Valladares%2C+G">Gregorio Garc铆a-Valladares</a>, <a href="/search/math-ph?searchtype=author&query=Gupta%2C+D">Deepak Gupta</a>, <a href="/search/math-ph?searchtype=author&query=Prados%2C+A">Antonio Prados</a>, <a href="/search/math-ph?searchtype=author&query=Plata%2C+C+A">Carlos A. The model dynamics comprises diffusive and motionless phases. The diffusive phase ends at random time instants, at which the system is reset to a given position -- where the system remains at rest for a random time interval, termed the refractory period. A pathway formulation is introduced to derive exact analytical results for the relevant observables in a broad framework, with the resetting time and the refractory period following arbitrary distributions. For the paradigmatic case of Poissonian distributions of the resetting and refractory times, in general with different characteristic rates, closed-form expressions are obtained that successfully describe the relaxation to the steady state. Finally, we focus on the single-target search problem, in which the survival probability and the mean first passage time to the target can be exactly computed. Therein, we also discuss optimal strategies, which show a non-trivial dependence on the refractory period. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('2310.19913v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('2310.19913v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 21 March, 2024; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 30 October, 2023; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> October 2023. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">25 pages, 4 figures</span> </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Journal ref:</span> Physics Scripta 99, 045234 (2024) </p> </li> <li class="arxiv-result"> <div class="is-marginless"> <p class="list-title is-inline-block"><a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2305.14245">arXiv:2305.14245</a> <span> [<a href="https://arxiv.org/pdf/2305.14245">pdf</a>, <a href="https://arxiv.org/format/2305.14245">other</a>] </span> </p> <div class="tags is-inline-block"> <span class="tag is-small is-link tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Statistical Mechanics">cond-mat.stat-mech</span> <span class="tag is-small is-grey tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Disordered Systems and Neural Networks">cond-mat.dis-nn</span> <span class="tag is-small is-grey tooltip is-tooltip-top" data-tooltip="Mathematical Physics">math-ph</span> </div> <div class="is-inline-block" style="margin-left: 0.5rem"> <div class="tags has-addons"> <span class="tag is-dark is-size-7">doi</span> <span class="tag is-light is-size-7"><a class="" href="https://doi.org/10.1088/1367-2630/ad06da">10.1088/1367-2630/ad06da <i class="fa fa-external-link" aria-hidden="true"></i></a></span> </div> </div> </div> <p class="title is-5 mathjax"> Optimal resetting strategies for search processes in heterogeneous environments </p> <p class="authors"> <span class="search-hit">Authors:</span> <a href="/search/math-ph?searchtype=author&query=Garc%C3%ADa-Valladares%2C+G">Gregorio Garc铆a-Valladares</a>, <a href="/search/math-ph?searchtype=author&query=Plata%2C+C+A">Carlos A. Here we analyse how stochastic resetting, also spatially distributed, can be used to improve the search process when the target location is quenched, i.e. it does not evolve in time. More specifically, we consider a model with minimal but sufficient ingredients that allows us to derive analytical results for the relevant physical quantities, such as the first passage time distribution. We focus on the minimisation of the mean first passage time and its fluctuations (standard deviation), which proves to be non-trivial. Our analysis shows that the no-disorder case is singular: for small disorder, the resetting rate distribution that minimises the mean first passage time leads to diverging fluctuations -- which impinge on the practicality of this minimisation. Interestingly, this issue is healed by minimising the fluctuations: the associated resetting rate distribution gives first passage times that are very close to the optimal ones. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('2305.14245v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('2305.14245v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 21 November, 2023; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 23 May, 2023; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> May 2023. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">26 pages, 9 figures</span> </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Journal ref:</span> New J. Therein, global stability and the possible existence of an associated Lyapunov function or $H$-theorem are open problems when non-conservative interactions are present, as in granular fluids. Here, we address this issue in the framework of a lattice model for granular-like velocity fields. For a quite general driving mechanism, including both boundary and bulk driving, we show that the steady state reached by the system in the long time limit is globally stable. This is done by proving analytically that a certain $H$-functional is non-increasing in the long time limit. Moreover, for two specific energy injection mechanisms, we are able to demonstrate that the proposed $H$-functional is non-increasing for all times. Also, we put forward a proof that clearly illustrates why the "classical" Boltzmann functional $H_{B}[f]=\int\! d\mathbf{r} \, d\mathbf{v} f(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{v},t) \ln f(\mathbf{r},\mathbf{v},t)$ is inadequate for systems with non-conservative interactions. Not only is this done for the simplified kinetic description that holds in the lattice models analysed here but also for a general kinetic equation, like Boltzmann's or Enskog's. <a class="is-size-7" style="white-space: nowrap;" onclick="document.getElementById('1702.05940v2-abstract-full').style.display = 'none'; document.getElementById('1702.05940v2-abstract-short').style.display = 'inline';">△ Less</a> </span> </p> <p class="is-size-7"><span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Submitted</span> 24 April, 2017; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">v1</span> submitted 20 February, 2017; <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">originally announced</span> February 2017. </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Comments:</span> <span class="has-text-grey-dark mathjax">13 pages, 5 figures; minor revision, accepted for publication in PRE</span> </p> <p class="comments is-size-7"> <span class="has-text-black-bis has-text-weight-semibold">Journal ref:</span> Phys.
