between childhood experiences of community and collective violence and psychological functioning in young people who grew up in post-conflict Northern Ireland. We hypothesized that those who grew up with such experiences would demonstrate internalizing and externalizing difficulties in early adulthood and, furthermore, that these difficulties would be mediated by adverse childhood experiences occurring within the home environment. As part of the Northern Ireland Childhood Adversity Study, we recruited 213 young people aged 18-25 years (108 males) who grew up in the post-conflict society of Northern Ireland using purposive sampling. Participants completed a digital questionnaire to measure adverse childhood experiences as well as aspects of psychological functioning. We employed the Adverse Childhood Experience -International Questionnaire (ACE-IQ¬) adaptation of the original Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE) as it additionally measured aspects of witnessing community violence (e.g., seeing someone being beaten/killed, fights) and experiences of collective violence (e.g., war, terrorism, police, or gangs’ battles exposure) during the first 18 years of life. 51% of our sample reported experiences of community and/or collective violence (N=108). Compared to young people with no such experiences (N=105), they also reported significantly more adverse experiences indicative of household dysfunction (e.g., family substance misuse, mental illness or domestic violence in the family, incarceration of a family member) but not more experiences of abuse or neglect. As expected, young people who grew up with the community and/or collective violence reported significantly higher anxiety and depression scores and were more likely to engage in acts of deliberate self-harm (internalizing symptoms). They also started drinking and taking drugs at a younger age and were significantly more likely to have been in trouble with the police (externalizing symptoms). When the type of violence exposure was separated by whether the violence was witnessed (community violence) or more directly experienced (collective violence), we found community and collective violence to have similar effects on externalizing symptoms, but for internalizing symptoms, we found evidence of a differential effect. Collective violence was associated with depressive symptoms, whereas witnessing community violence was associated with anxiety-type symptoms and deliberate self-harm. However, when experiences of household dysfunction were entered into the models predicting anxiety, depression, and deliberate self-harm, none of the main effects remained significant. This suggests internalizing type symptoms are mediated by immediate family-level experiences. By contrast, significant community and collective violence effects on externalizing behaviours: younger initiation of alcohol use, younger initiation of drug use, and getting into trouble with the police persisted after controlling for family-level factors and thus are directly associated with growing up with the community and collective violence. Given the cross-sectional nature of our study, we cannot comment on the direction of the effect. However, post-hoc correlational analyses revealed associations between externalising behaviours and personal factors, including greater risk-taking and young age at puberty. The implications of the findings will be discussed in relation to interventions for young people and families living with the community and collective violence. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=community%20and%20collective%20violence" title="community and collective violence">community and collective violence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adverse%20childhood%20experiences" title=" adverse childhood experiences"> adverse childhood experiences</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=youth" title=" youth"> youth</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=psychological%20wellbeing" title=" psychological wellbeing"> psychological wellbeing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/159251/psychological-functioning-of-youth-experiencing-community-and-collective-violence-in-post-conflict-northern-ireland" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/159251.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">83</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">75</span> The &#039;Saudade&#039; Market and the Development of Tourism in the Azores: An Analysis of Travel Preferences of Azorean Emigrants</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Silvia%20Rocha">Silvia Rocha</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Flavio%20Tiago"> Flavio Tiago</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Teresa%20Tiago"> Maria Teresa Tiago</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandra%20Faria"> Sandra Faria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joao%20Couto"> Joao Couto</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Azores have a tourist potential that has been developing, especially after an increase in promotion and the liberalization of airspace. However, there is still a gap with regard to the understanding of tourists from North America. Previous studies referred to the existence of two basic types of touristic flows: Emigrants and locals. Looking to help fill this gap, a study of travelers from North America was conducted. Using cluster analysis, it was determined the existence of three segments: nostalgic, regular and frequent. The recognition of these three segments is important to determine the necessary adjustments in tourist offerings to this market. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tourism" title="tourism">tourism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diaspora" title=" diaspora"> diaspora</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nostalgia" title=" nostalgia"> nostalgia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=culture" title=" culture"> culture</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/86744/the-saudade-market-and-the-development-of-tourism-in-the-azores-an-analysis-of-travel-preferences-of-azorean-emigrants" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/86744.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">193</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">74</span> Prediction of Coronary Heart Disease Using Fuzzy Logic</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elda%20Maraj">Elda Maraj</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shkelqim%20Kuka"> Shkelqim Kuka</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Coronary heart disease causes many deaths in the world. Unfortunately, this problem will continue to increase in the future. In this paper, a fuzzy logic model to predict coronary heart disease is presented. This model has been developed with seven input variables and one output variable that was implemented for 30 patients in Albania. Here fuzzy logic toolbox of MATLAB is used. Fuzzy model inputs are considered as cholesterol, blood pressure, physical activity, age, BMI, smoking, and diabetes, whereas the output is the disease classification. The fuzzy sets and membership functions are chosen in an appropriate manner. Centroid method is used for defuzzification. Building materials also have an outsized contribution to plastic pollution, including microplastic pollution. Yet building materials are often overlooked in plastic waste and pollution reduction efforts. This is a unique and novel study given that a review of the discipline has not been carried out through the keywords of the articles that allows visualizing through this component of the research, which are the main topics of discussion and the relationships that arise between the concepts discussed. To carry out this study, 3,876 articles have been taken as a reference, which includes 15,859 keywords from the main journals responsible for the growth of the discipline.; Journal of Behavioral Finance, Review of Behavioral Finance, Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics, Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics and Review of Behavioral Finance. The results indicate which are the topics most covered in the discipline throughout the period from 2000 to 2020, how these concepts have been dealt with on a recurring basis along with others throughout the aforementioned period and how the different concepts have been grouped based on the keywords established by the authors for the classification of their articles with a network diagram to complete the analysis. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=behavioral%20finance" title="behavioral finance">behavioral finance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=keywords" title=" keywords"> keywords</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=co-words" title=" co-words"> co-words</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=top%20journals" title=" top journals"> top journals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=data%20visualization" title=" data visualization"> data visualization</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142994/behavioral-finance-in-hundred-keywords" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142994.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">191</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">71</span> Thermomechanical Processing of a CuZnAl Shape-Memory Alloy</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pedro%20Henrique%20Alves%20Martins">Pedro Henrique Alves Martins</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paulo%20Guilherme%20%20Ferreira%20De%20Siqueira"> Paulo Guilherme Ferreira De Siqueira</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Franco%20De%20Castro%20Bubani"> Franco De Castro Bubani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Teresa%20Paulino%20Aguilar"> Maria Teresa Paulino Aguilar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paulo%20Roberto%20%20Cetlin"> Paulo Roberto Cetlin</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Cu-base shape-memory alloys (CuZnAl, CuAlNi, CuAlBe, etc.) are promising engineering materials for several unconventional devices, such as sensors, actuators, and mechanical vibration dampers. Brittleness is one of the factors that limit the commercial use of these alloys, as it makes thermomechanical processing difficult. In this work, a method for the hot extrusion of a 75.50% Cu, 16,74% Zn, 7,76% Al (weight %) alloy is presented. The effects of the thermomechanical processing in the microstructure and the pseudoelastic behavior of the alloy are assessed by optical metallography, compression and hardness tests. Results show that hot extrusion is a suitable method to obtain severe cross-section reductions in the CuZnAl shape-memory alloy studied. The alloy maintained its pseudoelastic effect after the extrusion and the modifications in the mechanical behavior caused by precipitation during hot extrusion can be minimized by a suitable precipitate dissolution heat treatment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hot%20extrusion" title="hot extrusion">hot extrusion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pseudoelastic" title=" pseudoelastic"> pseudoelastic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shape-memory%20alloy" title=" shape-memory alloy"> shape-memory alloy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermomechanical%20processing" title=" thermomechanical processing"> thermomechanical processing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/70427/thermomechanical-processing-of-a-cuznal-shape-memory-alloy" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/70427.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">374</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">70</span> Estimation of the Drought Index Based on the Climatic Projections of Precipitation of the Uruguay River Basin</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jos%C3%A9%20Leandro%20Melgar%20N%C3%A9ris">José Leandro Melgar Néris</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudin%C3%A9ia%20Brazil"> Claudinéia Brazil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luciane%20Teresa%20Salvi"> Luciane Teresa Salvi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Isabel%20Cristina%20Damin"> Isabel Cristina Damin</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The impact the climate change is not recent, the main variable in the hydrological cycle is the sequence and shortage of a drought, which has a significant impact on the socioeconomic, agricultural and environmental spheres. In the university setting, faculty women of color specifically encounter barriers that impact their level of job satisfaction, retention rates, and pedagogical practices. These barriers and challenges not only undermine faculty diversity efforts but also hinder the ability of colleges and universities to provide a supportive environment that fosters students' academic success and sense of belonging. Faculty who are marginalized and on the periphery in higher education institutions need support so that they can feel confident in building a student’s sense of belonging which can impact a student’s academic success and goal of earning a college degree. This study examined and sought to understand the importance of supporting faculty of color, specifically women faculty of color, and how this type of faculty support can impact student academic success and a student’s sense of belonging. The study furthered original research on strategies to move an institution forward on the equity spectrum to support belonging and inclusions as core culture elements. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=equity" title="equity">equity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inclusion" title=" inclusion"> inclusion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=belonging" title=" belonging"> belonging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=women" title=" women"> women</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=faculty%20support" title=" faculty support"> faculty support</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170668/each-one-reach-one-peer-mentoring-support-for-faculty-women-of-color" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170668.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">67</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">68</span> Analysis of an Alternative Data Base for the Estimation of Solar Radiation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Graciela%20Soares%20Marcelli">Graciela Soares Marcelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elison%20Eduardo%20Jardim%20Bierhals"> Elison Eduardo Jardim Bierhals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luciane%20Teresa%20Salvi"> Luciane Teresa Salvi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudineia%20Brazil"> Claudineia Brazil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Haag"> Rafael Haag</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The sun is a source of renewable energy, and its use as both a source of heat and light is one of the most promising energy alternatives for the future. To measure the thermal or photovoltaic systems a solar irradiation database is necessary. Brazil still has a reduced number of meteorological stations that provide frequency tests, as an alternative to the radio data platform, with reanalysis systems, quite significant. ERA-Interim is a global fire reanalysis by the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). The data assimilation system used for the production of ERA-Interim is based on a 2006 version of the IFS (Cy31r2). The system includes a 4-dimensional variable analysis (4D-Var) with a 12-hour analysis window. The spatial resolution of the dataset is approximately 80 km at 60 vertical levels from the surface to 0.1 hPa. This work aims to make a comparative analysis between the ERA-Interim data and the data observed in the Solarimmetric Atlas of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, to verify its applicability in the absence of an observed data network. The BO was extracted at 80ºC and analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). The critical Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance (HLBc) Assay of the BO was performed through BO, Tween® 20, Span® 80 and deionized water mixtures using an Ultra-Turrax® and determined using dynamic light scattering, pH, electrical conductivity and creaming rate. Then, a pseudoternary phase diagram (PPD) was constructed by water titration. The GC/MS analysis of BO suggested Methyl Oleate (9.26%) as major compound. The HLBc was 12.1, wherein the correspondent emulsion showed a pH of 4.83±1.29, electrical conductivity of 103.65 µS, creaming rate of 2.51±0.54%, droplet size of 207.07±8.31 nm and polydispersity index of 0.212±0.005. The PPD showed different formulations characterized as O/W emulsions. Thus, the PPD proved to be a useful tool to produce BO emulsions, in which their constituents may vary within the range of the desired system. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bullfrog%20%28Rana%20catesbeiana%20Shaw%29%20oil" title="bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana Shaw) oil">bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana Shaw) oil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emulsion%20production" title=" emulsion production"> emulsion production</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrophilic-lipophilic%20balance" title=" hydrophilic-lipophilic balance"> hydrophilic-lipophilic balance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gas%20chromatography%2Fmass%20spectrometry%20analysis" title=" gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis"> gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/11772/development-of-biotechnological-emulsion-based-on-bullfrog-rana-catesbeiana-shaw-oil-a-preliminary-study" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/11772.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">507</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">66</span> Levels of Plastic Waste and Fish Landed By Beach Seine Fishers in Coastal Ghana</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francis%20Gbogbo">Francis Gbogbo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angelica%20Ama%20Essandoh"> Angelica Ama Essandoh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wendy%20Teresa%20Baffoe"> Wendy Teresa Baffoe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Henry%20Groos"> Henry Groos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Charles%20Mario%20Boateng"> Charles Mario Boateng</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emmanuel%20Robert%20Blankson"> Emmanuel Robert Blankson</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Baseline data on plastic landing by fishers and monitoring of this is important in evaluating the success of plastic waste management efforts. This study investigated plastic and fish landed by beach seine fishers in Ghana, together with the rate of plastic deposition on an adjoining beach. Plastic constituted 31.6% of the total catch, and 41.7% of the fish landed by weight. There were significant differences between the average weight of fish (139.58±53.6kg) and plastic (65.73±14.6kg) landed per fishing session and the catch per unit effort of fish (183.4±76.7 kg/day) and plastic (88.4±35.2 kg/day). The mean weight of plastic landed per fishing session was higher than the mean weight of each of the 26 species of fisheries. The rate of plastic deposition on the beach was 8.1±2.5 plastic items per m2 per tidal cycle or 0.35±0.11kg plastic per m2 per tidal cycle, with food packs and tableware dominating the deposited plastic. The results suggested that ongoing water sachets and plastic bottle recycling in Ghana are yielding results and calls for targeted efforts in plastic food packs and tableware management. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fishig" title="fishig">fishig</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=landing" title=" landing"> landing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plastic%20waste" title=" plastic waste"> plastic waste</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intertidal%20area" title=" intertidal area"> intertidal area</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fishing%20effort" title=" fishing effort"> fishing effort</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/181875/levels-of-plastic-waste-and-fish-landed-by-beach-seine-fishers-in-coastal-ghana" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/181875.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">91</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">65</span> Comprehensive Care and the Right to Autonomy of Children and Adolescents with Cancer</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandra%20Soca%20Lozano">Sandra Soca Lozano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Isabel%20Lozano%20P%C3%A9rez"> Teresa Isabel Lozano Pérez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Germain%20Weber"> Germain Weber</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Cancer is a chronic disease of high prevalence in children and adolescents. Medical care in Cuba is carried out by a multidisciplinary team and family is the mediator between this team and the patient. Around this disease, there are interwoven many stereotypes and taboos by its relation to death. In this research report, we describe the work paradigm of psychological care to patients suffering from these diseases in the University Pediatric Hospital Juan Manuel Márquez of Havana, Cuba. We present the psychosocial factors that must be taken into account to provide comprehensive care and ensuring the quality of life of patients and their families. We also present the factors related to the health team and the management of information done with the patient. This is a descriptive proposal from the working experience accumulated in the named institution and in the review of the literature. As a result of this report we make a proposal of teamwork and the aspects in which psychological intervention should be continue performing in terms of increasing the quality of the care made by the health team. We conclude that it is necessary to continue improving the information management of children and adolescents with theses health problems and took into account their right to autonomy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=comprehensive%20care" title="comprehensive care">comprehensive care</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=management%20of%20information" title=" management of information"> management of information</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=psychosocial%20factors" title=" psychosocial factors"> psychosocial factors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=right%20to%20autonomy" title=" right to autonomy"> right to autonomy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46040/comprehensive-care-and-the-right-to-autonomy-of-children-and-adolescents-with-cancer" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46040.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">333</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">64</span> Modelling and Management of Vegetal Pest Based On Case of Xylella Fastidiosa in Alicante</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Teresa%20Signes%20Pont">Maria Teresa Signes Pont</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jose%20Juan%20Cortes%20Plana"> Jose Juan Cortes Plana</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Our proposal provides suitable modelling to the spread of plant pest and particularly to the propagation of Xylella fastidiosa in the almond trees. We compared the impact of temperature and humidity on the propagation of Xylella fastidiosa in various subspecies. Comparison between Balearic Islands and Alicante (Spain). Most sharpshooter and spittlebug species showed peaks in population density during the month of higher mean temperature and relative humidity (April-October), except for the splittlebug Clastoptera sp.1, whose adult population peaked from September-October (late summer and early autumn). The critical season is from when they hatch from the eggs until they are in the pre-reproductive season (January -April) to expand. We focused on winters in the egg state, which normally hatches in early March. The nymphs secrete a foam (mucilage) in which they live and that protects them from natural enemies of temperature changes and prevents dry as long as the humidity is above 75%. The interaction between the life cycles of vectors and vegetation influences the food preferences of vectors and is responsible for the general seasonal shift of the population from vegetation to trees and vice versa, In addition to the temperature maps, we have observed humidity as it affects the spread of the pest Xylella fastidiosa (Xf). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=xylella%20fastidiosa" title="xylella fastidiosa">xylella fastidiosa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=almod%20tree" title=" almod tree"> almod tree</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=temperature" title=" temperature"> temperature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=humidity" title=" humidity"> humidity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20model" title=" environmental model"> environmental model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142986/modelling-and-management-of-vegetal-pest-based-on-case-of-xylella-fastidiosa-in-alicante" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142986.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">175</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">63</span> Investigating Anti-bacterial and Anti-Covid-19 Virus Properties and Mode of Action of Mg(Oh)₂ and Copper-Infused Mg(Oh)₂ Nanoparticles on Coated Polypropylene Surfaces</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saleh%20Alkarri">Saleh Alkarri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Melinda%20Frame"> Melinda Frame</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dimple%20Sharma"> Dimple Sharma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=John%20Cairney"> John Cairney</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lee%20Maddan"> Lee Maddan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jin%20H.%20Kim"> Jin H. The anti-viral activity for the NPs was studied in aqueous liquid suspensions against SARS-CoV-2, and the mode of action was investigated on neat NPs and PP samples that were thermally embossed with NPs. Anti-bacterial studies for melt-compounded NPs in PP confirmed approximately 1 log reduction of E. coli populations in 24 h, while for thermally embossed NPs, an 8 log reduction of E. coli populations was observed. In addition, the NPs exhibit anti-viral activity against SARS-CoV-2. Fluorescence microscopy revealed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) is the main mode of action through which Mg(OH)₂ and Cu-Infused Mg(OH)₂act against microbes. Plastics with anti-microbial surfaces from where biocides are non-leachable are highly desirable. In this mixed-member electoral system, the seats distribution of proportional representation is not independent of the election by relative majority, as it attempts to correct representation imbalances produced in single-member districts. This two-fold structure has been maintained in the successive electoral reforms carried out along the last three decades (eight from 1986 to 2014). In all of them, the election process of 200 seats becomes complex: Formulas in the Law are difficult to understand and to be interpreted. This paper analyzes the Mexican electoral system after the electoral reform of 2014, which was applied for the first time in 2015. The research focuses on contradictions and issues of applicability, in particular situations where seats allocation is affected by ambiguity in the law and where asymmetrical treatment of political parties arises. Due to these facts, a proposal of electoral reform will be presented. It is intended to be simpler, clearer, and more enduring than the current system. Furthermore, this model is more suitable for producing electoral outcomes free of contradictions and paradoxes. This approach would allow a fair treatment of political parties and as a result an improved opportunity to exercise democracy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electoral%20mathematics" title="electoral mathematics">electoral mathematics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electoral%20reform" title=" electoral reform"> electoral reform</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mexican%20electoral%20system" title=" Mexican electoral system"> Mexican electoral system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=political%20asymmetry" title=" political asymmetry"> political asymmetry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=proportional%20representation" title=" proportional representation"> proportional representation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58654/electoral-mathematics-and-asymmetrical-treatment-to-political-parties-the-mexican-case" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58654.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">252</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">61</span> Culture as an Intervening Variable While Assessing Japanese Influence on Vietnam: 1991-2018</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Mili">Teresa Mili</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The significance of political and economic factors have barely been neglected while assessing bilateral relations, but the significance of culture as a soft power in Japan-Vietnam relations has largely been understated. While the close ties had their birth ever since the 14th century, this paper sets out with an inductive lens to analyze the role of culture as a variable in bilateral relations. Vietnam, which then had a history of war devastation had taken refuge in Japan and later sought inspiration from Japan’s economy with the simultaneous influence of culture since Japan was a developed nation, and Vietnam a third world country. Evidencing facts with illustrations, the paper shows how the twenty-first century has brought a growing bond as well as the onset of stronger ties between the two states based, primarily, on an emerging convergence of interests and culture. The cultural influence of Japan may be seen much in the Vietnamese cities, through evidences like the growing numbers of Japanese items on sale. The variety in cultural influence may be seen through the acceptance of Japanese fashion trends, mange comic, pop music, cuisine, tourism, Japanese studies and language, the translations of Japanese literature which are very much popular at Vietnam. Using secondary sources as well as assessing travel accounts and official websites, this research work will try to find out how much Japanese culture has influenced Vietnam and whether such influences will be strong enough to qualify culture as an intervening variable in the bilateral relations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=influence" title="influence">influence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=culture" title=" culture"> culture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=language" title=" language"> language</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cold%20war" title=" cold war"> cold war</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98494/culture-as-an-intervening-variable-while-assessing-japanese-influence-on-vietnam-1991-2018" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98494.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">162</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">60</span> Strategies for Student Recruitment in Civil Engineering</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Diogo%20Ribeiro">Diogo Ribeiro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Neto"> Teresa Neto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ricardo%20Santos"> Ricardo Santos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Portela"> Maria Portela</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Trinc%C3%A3o"> Alexandra Trincão</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This article describes a set of innovating student recruitment strategies in a 1st cycle course of Civil Engineering, in particular the Civil Engineering Degree from the School of Engineering - Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP-PP). The strategies described were two-fold, targeting, for one, the increment on the number of admissions for the degree’s first year and two, promoting the re-entry of students who, for whatever reason, interrupted their studies. For the first objective, teacher-student binomials were set, whilst for the second, personalized contacts and assistance were provided. The main initiatives were promoted by the team of degree directors and were upheld with the participation and in consonance with the School’s external relations office. These initiatives were put forward as an attempt to minimize the impact of a national and international crisis on the AEC industry when the sustainability of the course was at risk. The implementation of these strategies was assessed on basis of a statistical analysis of the data collected from official sources and by surveys promoted. The results showed that the re-entry boost of former students, attending classes scattered on the three curricular years, secured registrations on some Curricular Units (UC’s) which more than doubled their numbers. Accompanied by a still incipient but regained interest on Civil Engineering it was possible in the short span of three years to reset the number of new students from less than 10 to the currently maximum allowed of 75, and so invert the tendency of an abrupt decline on the total number of students enrolled on the degree. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=civil%20engineering" title="civil engineering">civil engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monitoring" title=" monitoring"> monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=performance%20indicators" title=" performance indicators"> performance indicators</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strategies" title=" strategies"> strategies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=student%20recruitment" title=" student recruitment"> student recruitment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80716/strategies-for-student-recruitment-in-civil-engineering" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80716.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">213</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">59</span> Students&#039; Experience Perception in Courses Taught in New Delivery Modes Compared to Traditional Modes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alejandra%20Yanez">Alejandra Yanez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Benavides"> Teresa Benavides</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zita%20Lopez"> Zita Lopez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Even before COVID-19, one of the most important challenges that Higher Education faces today is the need for innovative educational methodologies and flexibility. We could all agree that one of the objectives of Higher Education is to provide students with a variety of intellectual and practical skills that, at the same time, will help them develop competitive advantages such as adaptation and critical thinking. Among the strategic objectives of Universidad de Monterrey (UDEM) has been to provide flexibility and satisfaction to students in the delivery modes of the academic offer. UDEM implemented a methodology that combines face to face with synchronous and asynchronous as delivery modes. UDEM goal, in this case, was to implement new technologies and different teaching methodologies that will improve the students learning experience. In this study, the experience of students during courses implemented in new delivery mode was compared with students in courses with traditional delivery modes. Students chose openly either way freely. After everything students around the world lived in 2020 and 2021, one can think that the face to face (traditional) delivery mode would be the one chosen by students. The results obtained in this study reveal that both delivery modes satisfy students and favor their learning process. We will show how the combination of delivery modes provides flexibility, so the proposal is that universities can include them in their academic offer as a response to the current student's learning interests and needs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flexibility" title="flexibility">flexibility</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=new%20delivery%20modes" title=" new delivery modes"> new delivery modes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=student%20satisfaction" title=" student satisfaction"> student satisfaction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=academic%20offer" title=" academic offer"> academic offer</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/164168/students-experience-perception-in-courses-taught-in-new-delivery-modes-compared-to-traditional-modes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/164168.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">101</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">58</span> Isolation, Characterization and Application of Bacteriophages on the Biocontrol of Listeria monocytogenes in Soft Cheese</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vinicius%20Buccelli%20Ribeiro">Vinicius Buccelli Ribeiro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Teresa%20Destro"> Maria Teresa Destro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mariza%20Landgraf"> Mariza Landgraf</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Bacteriophages are one of the most abundant replicating entities on Earth and can be found everywhere in which their hosts live and there are reports regarding isolation from different niches such as soil and foods. Since studies are moving forward with regard to biotechnology area, different research projects are being performed focusing on the phage technology and its use by the food industry. This study aimed to evaluate a cocktail (LP501) of phages isolated in Brazil for its lytic potential against Listeria monocytogenes. Three bacteriophages (LP05, LP12 and LP20) were isolated from soil samples and all of them showed 100% lysis against a panel of 10 L. monocytogenes strains representing different serotypes of this pathogen. A mix of L. monocytogenes 1/2a and 4b were inoculated in soft cheeses (approximately 105 cfu/cm2) with the phage cocktail added thereafter (1 x 109 PFU/cm2). Samples were analyzed immediately and then stored at 10°C for ten days. At 30 min post-infection, the cocktail reduced L. monocytogenes counts approximately 1.5 logs, compared to controls without bacteriophage. The treatment produced a statistically significant decrease in the counts of viable cells (p < 0.05) and in all assays performed we observed a decrease of up to 4 logs of L. monocytogenes. This study will make available to the international community behavioral and molecular data regarding bacteriophages present in soil samples in Brazil. Furthermore, there is the possibility to apply this new cocktail of phages in different food products to combat L. monocytogenes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bacteriophages" title="bacteriophages">bacteriophages</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biocontrol" title=" biocontrol"> biocontrol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=listeria%20monocytogenes" title=" listeria monocytogenes"> listeria monocytogenes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soft%20cheese" title=" soft cheese "> soft cheese </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/37789/isolation-characterization-and-application-of-bacteriophages-on-the-biocontrol-of-listeria-monocytogenes-in-soft-cheese" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/37789.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">362</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">57</span> Differential Proteomic Profile and Terpenoid Production in Somatic Embryos of Jatropha curcas</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anamarel%20Medina-Hernandez">Anamarel Medina-Hernandez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Ponce-Noyola"> Teresa Ponce-Noyola</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ileana%20Vera-Reyes"> Ileana Vera-Reyes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ana%20C.%20Ramos-Valdivia"> Ana C. Jatropha curcas L. is an important plant for biodiesel production, but also is used in traditional medicine. Seeds from J. curcas are toxic because contain diterpenoids called phorbol esters, but in Mexico exist a non-toxic variety. Therefore, somatic embryos suspension cultures from non-toxic J. curcas variety were induced. In order to investigate the characteristics of somatic embryos, a differential proteomic analysis was made between pre-globular and globular stages by 2-D gel electrophoresis. 108 spots were differentially expressed (p<0.02), and 20 spots from globular somatic embryos were sequenced by MALDI-TOF-TOF mass spectrometry. A comparative analysis of terpenoids production between the two stages was made by RP-18 TLC plates. The sequenced proteins were related to energy production (68%), protein destination and storage (9%), secondary metabolism (9%), signal transduction (5%), cell structure (5%) and aminoacid metabolism (4%). Regarding terpenoid production, in pre-globular and globular somatic embryos were identified sterols and triterpenes of pharmacological interest (alpha-amyrin and betulinic acid) but also it was found compounds that were unique to each stage. The results of this work are the basis to characterize at different levels the J. curcas somatic embryos so that this system can be used efficiently in biotechnological processes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jatropha%20curcas" title="Jatropha curcas">Jatropha curcas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=proteomics" title=" proteomics"> proteomics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=somatic%20embryo" title=" somatic embryo"> somatic embryo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=terpenoids" title=" terpenoids"> terpenoids</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71308/differential-proteomic-profile-and-terpenoid-production-in-somatic-embryos-of-jatropha-curcas" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71308.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">254</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">56</span> Inclusive Practices in Physical Education: A Survey of Pre-Service Teachers&#039; Attitudes and Self-Efficacy in the Context of Teachers&#039; Training</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20M.%20Odipo">Teresa M. The aim of inclusive PE is to include children with disabilities and able bodied children, based on the idea, that all children should attend school together. While PE mostly took place in a heterogeneous environment, introducing children with all kinds of disabilities posed more challenges to the teachers, when children with disabilities were included. Therefore it is important that the educational approach should include pre-service teachers’ (PST) self-efficacy for and their attitudes towards inclusive practices. The PSTs’ self-efficacy for inclusive practices is one of the strongest predictors of the success of the inclusion reforms introduced in 2009, in order to improve PSTs’ ability to handle these very new challenges. PE stands out because the very nature of sport involves the body which means that all children, especially those with special needs should be treated in an appropriate manner. Up till now, it has been mostly English-speaking countries that have been assessed for inclusive practices in PE. Due to the lack of research in Germany, there is a strong need to question PSTs’ prepared-ness. This paper presents results from the 2016 survey conducted on around 100 PSTs by the German University of Sports in Cologne and opens up new directions within PSTs’ education, concerning their attitudes and self-efficacy towards inclusive PE. These new aspects will be included in the construction of new learning and teaching tools to improve pre-service teachers’ education for inclusive Physical Education. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=attitudes" title="attitudes">attitudes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inclusive%20physical%20education" title=" inclusive physical education"> inclusive physical education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pre-service%20teachers" title=" pre-service teachers"> pre-service teachers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-efficacy" title=" self-efficacy"> self-efficacy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60380/inclusive-practices-in-physical-education-a-survey-of-pre-service-teachers-attitudes-and-self-efficacy-in-the-context-of-teachers-training" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60380.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">353</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">55</span> Sediment Trapping by Seagrass Blades under Oscillatory Flow</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aina%20Barcelona">Aina Barcelona</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carolyn%20Oldham"> Carolyn Oldham</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jordi%20Colomer"> Jordi Colomer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jordi%20Garcia-Orellana"> Jordi Garcia-Orellana</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Serra"> Teresa Serra</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Seagrass meadows increase the sedimentation within the canopy. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about how seagrasses impact the vertical distribution of sediment coming from external sources and reaches the meadow. This study aims to determine the number of particles retained by a seagrass meadow. Based on the hydrodynamics in the vertical direction, a meadow can be separated into different compartments: the blades, the seabed, within the canopy layer, and the above canopy layer. A set of laboratory experiments were conducted under different hydrodynamic conditions and canopy densities with the purpose to mimic the real field conditions. This study demonstrates and quantifies that seagrass meadows decrease the volume of the suspended sediment by two mechanisms: capturing the suspended sediment by the seagrass blades and promoting the particle sedimentation to the seabed. This study also demonstrates that the number of sediment particles trapped by single seagrass blades decreases with canopy density. However, when considering the trapping by the total number of blades, the sediment captured by all the blades of the meadow increases with canopy density. Furthermore, comparing with the bare seabed, this study demonstrated that there is a reduction in the suspended particles within the canopy, which implies an improvement in the water clarity. In addition, the particle sedimentation on the seabed increases with the canopy density compared with the bare seabed, making evident the contribution of the vegetation in enhancing sedimentation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seagrass" title="seagrass">seagrass</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sediment%20capture" title=" sediment capture"> sediment capture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=turbulent%20kinetic%20energy" title=" turbulent kinetic energy"> turbulent kinetic energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oscillatory%20flow" title=" oscillatory flow"> oscillatory flow</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/135085/sediment-trapping-by-seagrass-blades-under-oscillatory-flow" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/135085.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">234</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">54</span> Gas Network Noncooperative Game</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Azevedo%20Perdico%C3%BALis">Teresa Azevedo PerdicoúLis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paulo%20Lopes%20Dos%20Santos"> Paulo Lopes Dos Santos</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The conceptualisation of the problem of network optimisation as a noncooperative game sets up a holistic interactive approach that brings together different network features (e.g., com-pressor stations, sources, and pipelines, in the gas context) where the optimisation objectives are different, and a single optimisation procedure becomes possible without having to feed results from diverse software packages into each other. A mathematical model of this type, where independent entities take action, offers the ideal modularity and subsequent problem decomposition in view to design a decentralised algorithm to optimise the operation and management of the network. In a game framework, compressor stations and sources are under-stood as players which communicate through network connectivity constraints–the pipeline model. That is, in a scheme similar to tatonnementˆ, the players appoint their best settings and then interact to check for network feasibility. The devolved degree of network unfeasibility informs the players about the ’quality’ of their settings, and this two-phase iterative scheme is repeated until a global optimum is obtained. Due to network transients, its optimisation needs to be assessed at different points of the control interval. For this reason, the proposed approach to optimisation has two stages: (i) the first stage computes along the period of optimisation in order to fulfil the requirement just mentioned; (ii) the second stage is initialised with the solution found by the problem computed at the first stage, and computes in the end of the period of optimisation to rectify the solution found at the first stage. The liability of the proposed scheme is proven correct on an abstract prototype and three example networks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=connectivity%20matrix" title="connectivity matrix">connectivity matrix</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gas%20network%20optimisation" title=" gas network optimisation"> gas network optimisation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=large-scale" title=" large-scale"> large-scale</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=noncooperative%20game" title=" noncooperative game"> noncooperative game</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=system%20decomposition" title=" system decomposition"> system decomposition</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/127821/gas-network-noncooperative-game" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/127821.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">152</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">53</span> Functional Yoghurt Enriched with Microencapsulated Olive Leaves Extract Powder Using Polycaprolactone via Double Emulsion/Solvent Evaporation Technique</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tamer%20El-Messery">Tamer El-Messery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Sanchez-Moya"> Teresa Sanchez-Moya</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ruben%20Lopez-Nicolas"> Ruben Lopez-Nicolas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gaspar%20Ros"> Gaspar Ros</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Esmat%20Aly"> Esmat Aly</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Olive leaves (OLs), the main by-product of the olive oil industry, have a considerable amount of phenolic compounds. The exploitation of these compounds represents the current trend in food processing. In this study, OLs polyphenols were microencapsulated with polycaprolactone (PCL) and utilized in formulating novel functional yoghurt. PCL-microcapsules were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry analysis. Their total phenolic (TPC), total flavonoid (TFC) contents, and antioxidant activities (DPPH, FRAP, ABTS), and polyphenols bioaccessibility were measured after oral, gastric, and intestinal steps of in vitro digestion. The four yoghurt formulations (containing 0, 25, 50, and 75 mg of PCL-microsphere/100g yoghurt) were evaluated for their pH, acidity, syneresis viscosity, and color during storage. In vitro digestion significantly affected the phenolic composition in non-encapsulated extract while had a lower impact on encapsulated phenolics. Higher protection was provided for encapsulated OLs extract, and their higher release was observed at the intestinal phase. Yoghurt with PCL-microsphere had lower viscosity, syneresis, and color parameters, as compared to control yoghurt. Thus, OLs represent a valuable and cheap source of polyphenols which can be successfully applied, in microencapsulated form, to formulate functional yoghurt. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=yoghurt%20quality%20attributes" title="yoghurt quality attributes">yoghurt quality attributes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=olive%20leaves" title=" olive leaves"> olive leaves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phenolic%20and%20flavonoids%20compounds" title=" phenolic and flavonoids compounds"> phenolic and flavonoids compounds</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antioxidant%20activity" title=" antioxidant activity"> antioxidant activity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polycaprolactone%20as%20microencapsulant" title=" polycaprolactone as microencapsulant"> polycaprolactone as microencapsulant</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/135540/functional-yoghurt-enriched-with-microencapsulated-olive-leaves-extract-powder-using-polycaprolactone-via-double-emulsionsolvent-evaporation-technique" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/135540.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">142</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">52</span> Improving Similarity Search Using Clustered Data</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Deokho%20Kim">Deokho Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wonwoo%20Lee"> Wonwoo Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jaewoong%20Lee"> Jaewoong Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Ng"> Teresa Ng</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gun-Ill%20Lee"> Gun-Ill Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jiwon%20Jeong"> Jiwon Jeong</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents a method for improving object search accuracy using a deep learning model. A major limitation to provide accurate similarity with deep learning is the requirement of huge amount of data for training pairwise similarity scores (metrics), which is impractical to collect. Thus, similarity scores are usually trained with a relatively small dataset, which comes from a different domain, causing limited accuracy on measuring similarity. For this reason, this paper proposes a deep learning model that can be trained with a significantly small amount of data, a clustered data which of each cluster contains a set of visually similar images. In order to measure similarity distance with the proposed method, visual features of two images are extracted from intermediate layers of a convolutional neural network with various pooling methods, and the network is trained with pairwise similarity scores which is defined zero for images in identical cluster. The proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art object similarity scoring techniques on evaluation for finding exact items. The proposed method achieves 86.5% of accuracy compared to the accuracy of the state-of-the-art technique, which is 59.9%. That is, an exact item can be found among four retrieved images with an accuracy of 86.5%, and the rest can possibly be similar products more than the accuracy. Therefore, the proposed method can greatly reduce the amount of training data with an order of magnitude as well as providing a reliable similarity metric. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20search" title="visual search">visual search</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deep%20learning" title=" deep learning"> deep learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=convolutional%20neural%20network" title=" convolutional neural network"> convolutional neural network</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=machine%20learning" title=" machine learning"> machine learning</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92185/improving-similarity-search-using-clustered-data" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92185.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">215</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">51</span> Public Participation in Science: The Case of Genetic Modified Organisms in Brazil</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Luisa%20Nozawa%20Ribeiro">Maria Luisa Nozawa Ribeiro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Teresa%20Miceli%20Kerbauy"> Maria Teresa Miceli Kerbauy</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper aims to present the theories of public participation in order to understand the context of the public GMO (Genetic Modified Organisms) policies in Brazil, highlighting the characteristics of its configuration and the dialog with the experts. As a controversy subject, the commercialization of GMO provoked manifestation of some popular and environmental representative groups questioning the decisions of policy makers and experts on the matter. Many aspects and consequences of the plantation and consumption of this crops emerged and the safety of this technology was questioned. Environmentalists, Civil Right's movement, representatives of rural workers, farmers and organics producers, etc. demonstrated their point of view, also sustained by some experts of medical, genetical, environmental, agronomical sciences, etc. fields. Despite this movement, the precautionary principle (risk management), implemented in 1987, suggested precaution facing new technologies and innovations in the sustainable development society. This principle influenced many legislation and regulation on GMO around the world, including Brazil, which became a reference among the world regulatory GMO systems. The Brazilian legislation ensures the citizens participation on GMO discussion, characteristic that was important to establish the connection between the subject and the participation theory. These deliberation spaces materialized in Brazil through the "Public Audiences", which are managed by the National Biosafety Technical Commission (CTNBio), the department responsible for controlling the research, production and commercialization of GMOs in Brazil. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=public%20engagement" title="public engagement">public engagement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=public%20participation" title=" public participation"> public participation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=science%20and%20technology%20studies" title=" science and technology studies"> science and technology studies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transgenic%20politics" title=" transgenic politics"> transgenic politics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54519/public-participation-in-science-the-case-of-genetic-modified-organisms-in-brazil" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54519.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">303</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">50</span> The Minimum Patch Size Scale for Seagrass Canopy Restoration</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aina%20Barcelona">Aina Barcelona</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carolyn%20Oldham"> Carolyn Oldham</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jordi%20Colomer"> Jordi Colomer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Serra"> Teresa Serra</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The loss of seagrass meadows worldwide is being tackled by formulating coastal restoration strategies. Seagrass loss results in a network of vegetated patches which are barely interconnected, and consequently, the ecological services they provide may be highly compromised. Hence, there is a need to optimize coastal management efforts in order to implement successful restoration strategies, not only through modifying the architecture of the canopies but also by gathering together information on the hydrodynamic conditions of the seabeds. To obtain information on the hydrodynamics within the patches of vegetation, this study deals with the scale analysis of the minimum lengths of patch management strategies that can be effectively used on. To this aim, a set of laboratory experiments were conducted in a laboratory flume where the plant densities, patch lengths, and hydrodynamic conditions were varied to discern the vegetated patch lengths that can provide optimal ecosystem services for canopy development. Two possible patch behaviours based on the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) production were determined: one where plants do not interact with the flow and the other where plants interact with waves and produce TKE. Furthermore, this study determines the minimum patch lengths that can provide successful management restoration. A canopy will produce TKE, depending on its density, the length of the vegetated patch, and the wave velocities. Therefore, a vegetated patch will produce plant-wave interaction under high wave velocities when it presents large lengths and high canopy densities. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seagrass" title="seagrass">seagrass</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=minimum%20patch%20size" title=" minimum patch size"> minimum patch size</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=turbulent%20kinetic%20energy" title=" turbulent kinetic energy"> turbulent kinetic energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oscillatory%20flow" title=" oscillatory flow"> oscillatory flow</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136059/the-minimum-patch-size-scale-for-seagrass-canopy-restoration" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136059.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">197</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">49</span> Comparative Analysis of the Third Generation of Research Data for Evaluation of Solar Energy Potential</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Claudineia%20Brazil">Claudineia Brazil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elison%20Eduardo%20Jardim%20Bierhals"> Elison Eduardo Jardim Bierhals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luciane%20Teresa%20Salvi"> Luciane Teresa Salvi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Haag"> Rafael Haag</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Renewable energy sources are dependent on climatic variability, so for adequate energy planning, observations of the meteorological variables are required, preferably representing long-period series. Despite the scientific and technological advances that meteorological measurement systems have undergone in the last decades, there is still a considerable lack of meteorological observations that form series of long periods. The reanalysis is a system of assimilation of data prepared using general atmospheric circulation models, based on the combination of data collected at surface stations, ocean buoys, satellites and radiosondes, allowing the production of long period data, for a wide gamma. The third generation of reanalysis data emerged in 2010, among them is the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) developed by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), these data have a spatial resolution of 0.50 x 0.50. In order to overcome these difficulties, it aims to evaluate the performance of solar radiation estimation through alternative data bases, such as data from Reanalysis and from meteorological satellites that satisfactorily meet the absence of observations of solar radiation at global and/or regional level. The results of the analysis of the solar radiation data indicated that the reanalysis data of the CFSR model presented a good performance in relation to the observed data, with determination coefficient around 0.90. Therefore, it is concluded that these data have the potential to be used as an alternative source in locations with no seasons or long series of solar radiation, important for the evaluation of solar energy potential. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate" title="climate">climate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reanalysis" title=" reanalysis"> reanalysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=renewable%20energy" title=" renewable energy"> renewable energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=solar%20radiation" title=" solar radiation"> solar radiation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98532/comparative-analysis-of-the-third-generation-of-research-data-for-evaluation-of-solar-energy-potential" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98532.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">209</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">48</span> The Effects of Pride Therapy on the Level of Self-Esteem among Physically Challenged Adolescents</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Canapi%20Patricia%20Joy">Canapi Patricia Joy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Canlas%20Tracy%20Gabriella"> Canlas Tracy Gabriella</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Canseco%20Teresa"> Canseco Teresa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Capistrano%20Reena%20Marie"> Capistrano Reena Marie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carandang%20Vernon"> Carandang Vernon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carbonel%20Khiara%20Claudine"> Carbonel Khiara Claudine </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Research problem: The main problem of the study was to determine the effect of Projecting the Reflection of the Individual’s Self-esteem (PRIDE) therapy on the level of self-esteem of physically challenged adolescents. Objectives of the Study: The study determined the effect of PRIDE (Projecting the Reflection of the Individuals Self-esteem) therapy on the level of self-esteem among physically challenged adolescents. Methodology: A quasi-experimental study was used which involved 30 randomly-assigned subjects, 15 in the experimental group and 15 in the control group. The Projecting the reflection of the Individuals’ Self-Esteem (PRDIE) therapy was administered to the experimental group. The researchers utilized the Sorensen Self-Esteem test tool as a pretest and posttest questionnaire and yielded a Cronbach’s alpha of .912. Paired T-test was used to analyze the gathered data. Results: The results showed that after the administration of PRIDE therapy, there was an increase on the level of self-esteem. The experimental group had a value of 3.590, which was significant and meant that the level of self-esteem is significantly increased. On the other hand, the control group, had a value of -2.207 which was also significant, therefore, the level of self esteem significantly decreased. Conclusion: the PRIDE Therapy is effective in increasing the level of self-esteem among physically challenged adolescent. Recommendations: The researchers recommend the use of PRIDE Therapy as an intervention in handling physically challenged patients, especially adolescents, in order to enhance their self-esteem. Also, the researchers recommend that nursing students be informed on the efficacy of PRIDE Therapy in enhancing the self-esteem of physically challenged patients. Furthermore, the inclusion of a psychologist during the implementation of PRIDE Therapy, specifically art therapy, to be able to have a more focused interpretation of the drawings and really be able to see the projection of their self-esteem is also recommended. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adolescents" title="adolescents">adolescents</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PRIDE%20therapy" title=" PRIDE therapy"> PRIDE therapy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=physically%20challenged" title=" physically challenged"> physically challenged</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-esteem" title=" self-esteem"> self-esteem</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23232/the-effects-of-pride-therapy-on-the-level-of-self-esteem-among-physically-challenged-adolescents" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23232.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">310</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">47</span> Measuring Principal and Teacher Cultural Competency: A Need Assessment of Three Proximate PreK-5 Schools</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Caswell">Teresa Caswell</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Throughout the United States and within a myriad of demographic contexts, students of color experience the results of systemic inequities as an academic outcome. These disparities continue despite the increased resources provided to students and ongoing instruction-focused professional learning received by teachers. The researcher postulated that lower levels of educator cultural competency are an underlying factor of why resource and instructional interventions are less effective than desired. Before implementing any type of intervention, however, cultural competency needed to be confirmed as a factor in schools demonstrating academic disparities between racial subgroups. A needs assessment was designed to measure levels of individual beliefs, including cultural competency, in both principals and teachers at three neighboring schools verified to have academic disparities. The resulting mixed method study utilized the Optimal Theory Applied to Identity Development (OTAID) model to measure cultural competency quantitatively, through self-identity inventory survey items, with teachers and qualitatively, through one-on-one interviews, with each school’s principal. A joint display was utilized to see combined data within and across school contexts. Each school was confirmed to have misalignments between principal and teacher levels of cultural competency beliefs while also indicating that a number of participants in the self-identity inventory survey may have intentionally skipped items referencing the term oppression. Additional use of the OTAID model and self-identity inventory in future research and across contexts is needed to determine transferability and dependability as cultural competency measures. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cultural%20competency" title="cultural competency">cultural competency</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=identity%20development" title=" identity development"> identity development</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mixed-method%20analysis" title=" mixed-method analysis"> mixed-method analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=needs%20assessment" title=" needs assessment"> needs assessment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152311/measuring-principal-and-teacher-cultural-competency-a-need-assessment-of-three-proximate-prek-5-schools" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152311.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">152</span> </span> </div> </div> <ul class="pagination"> <li class="page-item disabled"><span class="page-link">&lsaquo;</span></li> <li class="page-item active"><span class="page-link">1</span></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Rushe&amp;page=2">2</a></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Rushe&amp;page=3">3</a></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Rushe&amp;page=2" rel="next">&rsaquo;</a></li> </ul> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">&copy;
