See Leviticus 13.">a</a> <a href="/matthew/26-7.htm">7</a>a woman came to Him, having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and poured it on His head as He is reclining. <a href="/matthew/26-8.htm">8</a>And the disciples having seen, became indignant, saying, “For what purpose is this waste? <a href="/matthew/26-9.htm">9</a>For this could have been sold for much, and have been given to the poor.” <a href="/matthew/26-10.htm">10</a>And Jesus having known, said to them, “Why do you cause trouble to the woman? For she did a beautiful work to Me. <a href="/matthew/26-11.htm">11</a>For the poor you always have with you,<a href="#fnb" title="See Deuteronomy 15:11.">b</a> but not always do you have Me. <a href="/matthew/26-12.htm">12</a>For this woman, in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, did it for My burial. <a href="/matthew/26-13.htm">13</a>Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel shall be proclaimed in the whole world, that which this woman did also will be spoken of, for a memorial of her.” Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus (Zechariah 11:10-17; Matthew 27:3-10; Mark 14:10-11)<a href="/matthew/26-14.htm">14</a>Then one of the Twelve, the one being called Judas Iscariot, having gone to the chief priests, <a href="/matthew/26-15.htm">15</a>said, “What are you willing to give me, and I will betray Him to you?” And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver. <a href="/matthew/26-16.htm">16</a>And from that time, he was seeking an opportunity that he might betray Him. Preparing the Passover (Psalm 41:1-13; Mark 14:12-21; Luke 22:7-13; John 13:18-30)<a href="/matthew/26-17.htm">17</a>And on the first day of the unleavened bread, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you desire we should prepare for You to eat the Passover?” <a href="/matthew/26-18.htm">18</a>And He said, “Go into the city unto a certain man and tell him the Teacher says, ‘My time is near; I will keep the Passover with you with My disciples.’” <a href="/matthew/26-19.htm">19</a>And the disciples did as Jesus directed them, and prepared the Passover. <a href="/matthew/26-20.htm">20</a>And evening having arrived, He was reclining with the twelve disciples.<a href="#fnc" title="BYZ and TR ‘the Twelve’">c</a> <a href="/matthew/26-21.htm">21</a>And as they were eating, He said to them, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.” <a href="/matthew/26-22.htm">22</a>And being grieved exceedingly, they began, each one, to say to Him, “Is it I, Lord?” <a href="/matthew/26-23.htm">23</a>And answering He said, “The one having dipped the hand in the dish with Me, he will betray Me. <a href="/matthew/26-24.htm">24</a>Indeed the Son of Man goes as it has been written about Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for him if that man had not been born.” <a href="/matthew/26-25.htm">25</a>And Judas who was betraying Him, answering, said, “Is it I, Rabbi?” He says to him, “You have said.” The Last Supper (Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:14-23; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34)<a href="/matthew/26-26.htm">26</a>Now as they were eating, Jesus, having taken bread and having blessed it, broke it, and having given it to the disciples, He said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” <a href="/matthew/26-27.htm">27</a>And having taken the cup and having given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you. <a href="/matthew/26-28.htm">28</a>For this is My blood of the covenant,<a href="#fnd" title="BYZ and TR ‘the new covenant’">d</a> being poured out for many, for forgiveness of sins. <a href="/matthew/26-29.htm">29</a>And I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now until that the day when I drink it anew with you in the kingdom of My Father.” <a href="/matthew/26-30.htm">30</a>And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial (Mark 14:27-31; Luke 22:31-38; John 13:36-38)<a href="/matthew/26-31.htm">31</a>Then Jesus says to them, “You all will fall away because of Me during this night. For it has been written:‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’<a href="#fne" title="Zechariah 13:7">e</a> <a href="/matthew/26-32.htm">32</a>But I, after being raised, will go before you into Galilee.” <a href="/matthew/26-33.htm">33</a>And Peter answering, said to Him, “If all will fall away because of You, I never will fall away.” <a href="/matthew/26-34.htm">34</a>Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you, during this night, before the rooster crowing, you will deny Me three times.” <a href="/matthew/26-35.htm">35</a>Peter says to Him, “Even if it were necessary for me to die with You, I will never deny You.” And all the disciples said likewise. Jesus Prays at Gethsemane (Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46)<a href="/matthew/26-36.htm">36</a>Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He says to the disciples, “Sit here until that having gone away over there, I shall pray.” <a href="/matthew/26-37.htm">37</a>And having taken with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. <a href="/matthew/26-38.htm">38</a>Then He says to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch with Me.” <a href="/matthew/26-39.htm">39</a>And having gone forward a little, He fell upon His face, praying, and saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as You.” <a href="/matthew/26-40.htm">40</a>And He comes to the disciples and finds them sleeping. And He says to Peter, “So, were you not able to watch with Me one hour? <a href="/matthew/26-41.htm">41</a>Watch and pray, that you do not enter into temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the flesh weak.” <a href="/matthew/26-42.htm">42</a>Again for a second time having gone away, He prayed, saying, “My Father, if this is not possible to pass unless I drink it, Your will be done.” <a href="/matthew/26-43.htm">43</a>And having come again, He finds them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. <a href="/matthew/26-44.htm">44</a>And having left them again, having gone away, He prayed for the third time, having said the same thing again. <a href="/matthew/26-45.htm">45</a>Then He comes to the disciples and says to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. Behold, the hour has drawn near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. <a href="/matthew/26-46.htm">46</a>Rise up, let us go! Behold, he who is betraying Me has drawn near!” The Betrayal of Jesus (Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:1-14)<a href="/matthew/26-47.htm">47</a>And as He is still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the Twelve, came, and with him great a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people. <a href="/matthew/26-48.htm">48</a>And the one betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I shall kiss, it is He; seize Him.” <a href="/matthew/26-49.htm">49</a>And having come up to Jesus immediately, he said, “Greetings, Rabbi,” and kissed Him. <a href="/matthew/26-50.htm">50</a>And Jesus said to him, “Friend, for what are you come?”<a href="#fnf" title="Or ‘Friend, why have you come?’">f</a> Then having approached, they laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. <a href="/matthew/26-51.htm">51</a>And behold, one of those with Jesus, having stretched out the hand, drew his sword, and having struck the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear. <a href="/matthew/26-52.htm">52</a>Then Jesus says to him, “Return your sword into its place; for all those having taken the sword, will perish by the sword. <a href="/matthew/26-53.htm">53</a>Or do you think that I am not able to call upon My Father, and He will furnish to Me presently more than twelve legions of angels? <a href="/matthew/26-54.htm">54</a>How then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” <a href="/matthew/26-55.htm">55</a>In that hour, Jesus said to the crowds, “Did you come out with swords and clubs, as against a robber, to capture Me? Every day in the temple I was sitting, teaching, and you did not seize Me. <a href="/matthew/26-56.htm">56</a>And all this is come to pass, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then the disciples all, having forsaken Him, fled. Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin (Isaiah 53:1-8; Mark 14:53-65; John 18:19-24; 1 Peter 2:21-25)<a href="/matthew/26-57.htm">57</a>And those having seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. <a href="/matthew/26-58.htm">58</a>And Peter was following Him from afar, even to the court of the high priest. And having entered within, he was sitting with the guards to see the outcome. <a href="/matthew/26-59.htm">59</a>And the chief priests and the whole Council were seeking false evidence against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. <a href="/matthew/26-60.htm">60</a>But they did not find any, of many false witnesses having come forward. And at last, two having come forward, <a href="/matthew/26-61.htm">61</a>they said, “This man has been saying, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.’” <a href="/matthew/26-62.htm">62</a>And the high priest having stood up, said to Him, “Answer you nothing? What do these witness against you?” <a href="/matthew/26-63.htm">63</a>But Jesus was silent. And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure you by the living God, that You tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God.” <a href="/matthew/26-64.htm">64</a>Jesus says to him, “You have said. But I say to you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power and coming upon the clouds of heaven.”<a href="#fng" title="See Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13.">g</a> <a href="/matthew/26-65.htm">65</a>Then the high priest tears his garments, saying, “He has blasphemed; why do we have any more need of witnesses? Behold now, you have heard the blasphemy. <a href="/matthew/26-66.htm">66</a>What do you think?” And answering they said, “He is deserving of death.” <a href="/matthew/26-67.htm">67</a>Then they spat in His face and struck Him. And others slapped Him, <a href="/matthew/26-68.htm">68</a>saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ, who is the one having struck You?” Peter Denies Jesus (Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:54-62; John 18:15-18)<a href="/matthew/26-69.htm">69</a>And Peter was sitting outside in the court, and one servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” <a href="/matthew/26-70.htm">70</a>And he denied it before all, saying, “I do not know what you say.” <a href="/matthew/26-71.htm">71</a>And having gone out to the porch, another saw him, and says to those there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” <a href="/matthew/26-72.htm">72</a>And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” <a href="/matthew/26-73.htm">73</a>And after a little while those standing by having approached, said to Peter, “Surely you are of them also, for even your speech gives you away.” <a href="/matthew/26-74.htm">74</a>Then he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. <a href="/matthew/26-75.htm">75</a>And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, He having said, “Before the rooster crowing, you will deny Me three times.” And having gone out, he wept bitterly.<A name="fn"> <A name="fna"></a>a 6 Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases.
