See Leviticus 13.">a</a></span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>a woman came to Him, having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and poured <i>it</i> on His head <i>as</i> He is reclining. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And the disciples having seen, became indignant, saying, “For what purpose <i>is</i> this waste? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>For this could have been sold for much, and have been given to <i>the</i> poor.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And Jesus having known, said to them, <span class="red">“Why do you cause trouble to the woman? For she did a beautiful work to Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>For the poor you always have with you,<span class="fn"><a href="#fnb" title="See Deuteronomy 15:11.">b</a></span> but not always do you have Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>For this <i>woman</i>, in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, did <i>it</i> for My burial. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel shall be proclaimed in the whole world, that which this <i>woman</i> did also will be spoken of, for a memorial of her.”</span> </p><p class="hdg">Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Zechariah 11:10-17; Matthew 27:3-10; Mark 14:10-11)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then one of the Twelve, the <i>one</i> being called Judas Iscariot, having gone to the chief priests, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>said, “What are you willing to give me, and I will betray Him to you?” And they appointed to him thirty pieces of silver. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And from that time, he was seeking an opportunity that he might betray Him. </p><p class="hdg">Preparing the Passover<br /><span class="cross">(Psalm 41:1-13; Mark 14:12-21; Luke 22:7-13; John 13:18-30)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And on the first <i>day</i> of the unleavened <i>bread</i>, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Where do you desire we should prepare for You to eat the Passover?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And He said, <span class="red">“Go into the city unto a certain man and tell him the Teacher says, ‘My time is near; I will keep the Passover with you with My disciples.’”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And the disciples did as Jesus directed them, and prepared the Passover. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And evening having arrived, He was reclining with the twelve disciples.<span class="fn"><a href="#fnc" title="BYZ and TR ‘the Twelve’">c</a></span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And <i>as</i> they were eating, He said to them, <span class="red">“Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And being grieved exceedingly, they began, each one, to say to Him, “Is it I, Lord?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And answering He said, <span class="red">“The <i>one</i> having dipped the hand in the dish with Me, he will betray Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Indeed the Son of Man goes as it has been written about Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for him if that man had not been born.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And Judas who was betraying Him, answering, said, “Is it I, Rabbi?”</p><p class="reg"> He says to him, <span class="red">“You have said.”</span> </p><p class="hdg">The Last Supper<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 14:22-26; Luke 22:14-23; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now <i>as</i> they were eating, Jesus, having taken bread and having blessed <i>it</i>, broke <i>it</i>, and having given <i>it</i> to the disciples, He said, <span class="red">“Take, eat; this is My body.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And having taken <i>the</i> cup and having given thanks, He gave <i>it</i> to them, saying, <span class="red">“Drink of it, all of you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>For this is My blood of the covenant,<span class="fn"><a href="#fnd" title="BYZ and TR ‘the new covenant’">d</a></span> being poured out for many, for forgiveness of sins. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now until that the day when I drink it anew with you in the kingdom of My Father.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And having sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts Peter's Denial<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 14:27-31; Luke 22:31-38; John 13:36-38)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then Jesus says to them, <span class="red">“You all will fall away because of Me during this night. For it has been written:</span></p><p class="indent1stlinered">‘I will strike the shepherd,</p><p class="indentred2"> and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’<span class="fn"><a href="#fne" title="Zechariah 13:7">e</a></span> </p><p class="red"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>But I, after being raised, will go before you into Galilee.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And Peter answering, said to Him, “If all will fall away because of You, I never will fall away.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Jesus said to him, <span class="red">“Truly I say to you, during this night, before <i>the</i> rooster crowing, you will deny Me three times.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Peter says to Him, “Even if it were necessary for me to die with You, I will never deny You.” And all the disciples said likewise. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Prays at Gethsemane<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Then Jesus comes with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He says to the disciples, <span class="red">“Sit here until that having gone away over there, I shall pray.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And having taken with <i>Him</i> Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>Then He says to them, <span class="red">“My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch with Me.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And having gone forward a little, He fell upon His face, praying, and saying, <span class="red">“My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as You.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And He comes to the disciples and finds them sleeping. And He says to Peter, <span class="red">“So, were you not able to watch with Me one hour? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Watch and pray, that you do not enter into temptation. For the spirit <i>is</i> willing, but the flesh weak.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Again for a second time having gone away, He prayed, saying, <span class="red">“My Father, if this is not possible to pass unless I drink it, Your will be done.”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And having come again, He finds them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And having left them again, having gone away, He prayed for <i>the</i> third time, having said the same thing again. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Then He comes to the disciples and says to them, <span class="red">“Sleep and take your rest later on. Behold, the hour has drawn near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into <i>the</i> hands of sinners. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>Rise up, let us go! Behold, he who is betraying Me has drawn near!”</span> </p><p class="hdg">The Betrayal of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 14:43-52; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:1-14)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And as He is still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the Twelve, came, and with him great a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and elders of the people. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And the <i>one</i> betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomever I shall kiss, it is He; seize Him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>And having come up to Jesus immediately, he said, “Greetings, Rabbi,” and kissed Him. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>And Jesus said to him, <span class="red">“Friend, for what are you come?”</span><span class="fn"><a href="#fnf" title="Or ‘Friend, why have you come?’">f</a></span></p><p class="reg"> Then having approached, they laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>And behold, one of those with Jesus, having stretched out the hand, drew his sword, and having struck the servant of the high priest, cut off his ear. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>Then Jesus says to him, <span class="red">“Return your sword into its place; for all those having taken <i>the</i> sword, will perish by <i>the</i> sword. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>Or do you think that I am not able to call upon My Father, and He will furnish to Me presently more than twelve legions of angels? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>How then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>In that hour, Jesus said to the crowds, <span class="red">“Did you come out with swords and clubs, as against a robber, to capture Me? Every day in the temple I was sitting, teaching, and you did not seize Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>And all this is come to pass, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”</span></p><p class="reg"> Then the disciples all, having forsaken Him, fled. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin<br /><span class="cross">(Isaiah 53:1-8; Mark 14:53-65; John 18:19-24; 1 Peter 2:21-25)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-57.htm"><b>57</b></a></span>And those having seized Jesus led <i>Him</i> away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-58.htm"><b>58</b></a></span>And Peter was following Him from afar, even to the court of the high priest. And having entered within, he was sitting with the guards to see the outcome. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-59.htm"><b>59</b></a></span>And the chief priests and the whole Council were seeking false evidence against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-60.htm"><b>60</b></a></span>But they did not find any, of many false witnesses having come forward.</p><p class="reg"> And at last, two having come forward, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-61.htm"><b>61</b></a></span>they said, “This <i>man</i> has been saying, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.’” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-62.htm"><b>62</b></a></span>And the high priest having stood up, said to Him, “Answer you nothing? What do these witness against you?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-63.htm"><b>63</b></a></span>But Jesus was silent.</p><p class="reg"> And the high priest said to Him, “I adjure you by the living God, that You tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-64.htm"><b>64</b></a></span>Jesus says to him, <span class="red">“You have said. But I say to you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at <i>the</i> right hand of Power and coming upon the clouds of heaven.”</span><span class="fn"><a href="#fng" title="See Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13.">g</a></span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-65.htm"><b>65</b></a></span>Then the high priest tears his garments, saying, “He has blasphemed; why do we have any more need of witnesses? Behold now, you have heard the blasphemy. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-66.htm"><b>66</b></a></span>What do you think?”</p><p class="reg"> And answering they said, “He is deserving of death.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-67.htm"><b>67</b></a></span>Then they spat in His face and struck Him. And others slapped <i>Him</i>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-68.htm"><b>68</b></a></span>saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ, who is the <i>one</i> having struck You?” </p><p class="hdg">Peter Denies Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Mark 14:66-72; Luke 22:54-62; John 18:15-18)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-69.htm"><b>69</b></a></span>And Peter was sitting outside in the court, and one servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-70.htm"><b>70</b></a></span>And he denied <i>it</i> before all, saying, “I do not know what you say.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-71.htm"><b>71</b></a></span>And having gone out to the porch, another saw him, and says to those there, “This <i>man</i> was with Jesus of Nazareth.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-72.htm"><b>72</b></a></span>And again he denied <i>it</i> with an oath, “I do not know the man.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-73.htm"><b>73</b></a></span>And after a little while those standing by having approached, said to Peter, “Surely you are of them also, for even your speech gives you away.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-74.htm"><b>74</b></a></span>Then he began to curse and to swear, “I do not know the man!”</p><p class="reg"> And immediately a rooster crowed. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/26-75.htm"><b>75</b></a></span>And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, He having said, <span class="red">“Before <i>the</i> rooster crowing, you will deny Me three times.”</span> And having gone out, he wept bitterly.<A name="fn"><br /><br /></p><A name="fna"></a><span class="footnotesbot">a</span> <span class="fnverse">6</span> <span class="footnote">Leprosy was a term for several skin diseases.
