Explaining the type of relationship defined by “the architect” between architecture and nature opens a window towards understanding the theoretical conceptions of the architect as the creator of “architecture”. Now, if these theoretical foundations are put under scrutiny from the viewpoint of Islam, and an architect considers the relationship of human and nature within the context of Islam, he would let nature to manifest itself in architecture. The reasons for such a relationship is explicable in terms of the degree and nature of knowledge of the architect about nature; while the way it comes to existence is explained by defining the force of nature – ruling the entire nature – and its acts. It is by the scientific command of the architect and his mastery in the hermetic force of nature that the material bodies of buildings evolve from artificial to natural. Additionally, the presence of nature creates hermetic architectural spaces for the spiritual development of humans while serving for living at different levels. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title="nature">nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Islam" title=" Islam"> Islam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cognition" title=" cognition"> cognition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=science" title=" science"> science</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=presence" title=" presence"> presence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=elixir" title=" elixir "> elixir </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32206/nature-elixir-of-architecture-a-contemplation-on-human-nature-and-architecture-in-islam" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32206.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">489</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4357</span> Nature Writing in Margaret Atwood’s 'The Testaments'</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Natalia%20Fontes%20De%20Oliveira">Natalia Fontes De Oliveira</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nature and women have a long age association that has persisted throughout history, cultures, literature, and arts. Women’s physiological functions of reproduction and childbearing are viewed as closer to nature as a binary opposition to men, who have metaphorically and historically been associated with culture. To liberate from strictures of phallogocentric rhetoric, a radical critique of the categories of nature and culture must be undertaken. This paper proposes that nature writing in Margaret Atwood’s The Testaments is used subversively as a form of rebellion to disrupt the metaphorical relationship between women and nature. In tune with ecofeminist concerns, the imagery rewrites patriarchal paradigms of binary oppositions as the protagonists narrate a complex and plural relationship between nature and women. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ecofeminism" title="ecofeminism">ecofeminism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Margaret%20Atwood" title=" Margaret Atwood"> Margaret Atwood</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature%20writing" title=" nature writing"> nature writing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=women%27s%20writing" title=" women's writing"> women's writing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136049/nature-writing-in-margaret-atwoods-the-testaments" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136049.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">165</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4356</span> Metamorphosis in Nature through Adéquation: An Ecocritical Reading of Charles Tomlinson's Poetry</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zahra%20Barzegar">Zahra Barzegar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Reza%20Deedari"> Reza Deedari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Behzad%20Pourgharib"> Behzad Pourgharib</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study examines how metamorphosis in nature is depicted in Charles Tomlinson's poetry through Lawrence Buell's mimesis and referential strategy of adéquation. This study aims to answer the questions that what is the relationship between Tomlinson's selected poems and nature, and how does Tomlinson's poetry bring the reader close to the natural environment. Adéquation is a way that brings the reader close to nature, not by imitating nature but by referring to it imaginatively and creating a stylized image. Using figurative language, namely imagery, metaphor, and analogy, adéquation creates a stylized image of metamorphosis in a nature scene that acts as a middle way between the reader and nature. This paper proves that adéquation reinvents the metamorphosis in natural occurrences in Charles Tomlinson's selected poems. Thus, a reader whose imagination is addressed achieves closeness with nature and a caring outlook toward natural happenings. This article confirms that Tomlinson's poems are potential enough to represent metamorphosis in nature through adéquation. Therefore, the reader understands nature beyond the poem as the poem presents a gist of nature through adéquation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ad%C3%A9quation" title="adéquation">adéquation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metamorphosis" title=" metamorphosis"> metamorphosis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=referentiality" title=" referentiality"> referentiality</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/144079/metamorphosis-in-nature-through-adequation-an-ecocritical-reading-of-charles-tomlinsons-poetry" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/144079.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">186</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4355</span> Noticing Nature: Benefits for Connectedness to Nature and Wellbeing</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dawn%20Watling">Dawn Watling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lorraine%20Lecourtois"> Lorraine Lecourtois</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adnan%20Levent"> Adnan Levent</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ryan%20Jeffries"> Ryan Jeffries</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aysha%20Bellamy"> Aysha Bellamy</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Mental health diagnoses are on the rise for adolescents worldwide, with many being unable to access support and increasing use of social prescribing time in nature. There is an increasing need to better understand the preventive benefits of spending time in nature. In this paper, research findings from 599 seven to 12-year-olds completed two sets of questionnaires (before the visit and after a walk in nature). Participants spent time in one of three different biodiverse habitats. Findings explore predictors (including age, sex, and mental health) of increases in connection to nature and well-being. Secondly, research findings from 313 eighteen to 87-year-olds who completed questionnaires and had their heart rate monitored, followed by a self-guided walk, will be discussed. Findings explore predictors (including age, sex, connectedness to nature, well-being, and heart rate as a proxy measure of stress) of increases in mood and feelings of restoration. The discussion will focus on the converging evidence for taking time to notice nature and the role of different environments in enhancing connection to nature, well-being, and positive mental health. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title="nature">nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=connectedness%20to%20nature" title=" connectedness to nature"> connectedness to nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20prescribing" title=" social prescribing"> social prescribing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wellbeing" title=" wellbeing"> wellbeing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/188271/noticing-nature-benefits-for-connectedness-to-nature-and-wellbeing" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/188271.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">31</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4354</span> Towards an Adornian Critical Theory of the Environment</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dominic%20Roulx">Dominic Roulx</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Many scholars have in the past decade emphasized the relevance of Adorno’s criticism of the rationalized domination of nature (Naturbeherrschung) for thinking the environmental crisis. Beyond the intersubjective critical models of thinkers such as Habermas and Honneth, Adorno’s critical theory has the benefit, according to them, of disclosing the entwinement of social and natural domination in a critically productive way. The author will be arguing in this paper that Adorno’s model of critical theory displays a theoretical framework that is both original and relevant for thinking the ins and outs of the currentenvironmental crisis. To do so, he first construe Adorno’s understanding of the historical domination of nature and argue that Adorno’s method for its criticizing is immanent critique. He puts emphasis on how his understanding of the domination of nature implicitly implies an account of thedialectical relationship between reason and nature. In doing so, he presents a naturalistic understanding of his idea of the primacy of the object. Second, regarding Adorno’s concept of nature, he discusses what he sees as the shortcomings of many commentators’ understanding of the concept of nature in Adorno. He contends that they tend to fall short of Adorno’s concept of nature in failing to make sense of its thoroughly negative signification, thereby falling into an uncritical and fetichized comprehension of “nature. Third, he discusses the prospect for a possible “reconciliation” (Versöhnung) of nature with society. Highlighting how the domination of nature proves to produce the necessary conditions for its own overcoming, he contends that reconciliation with nature relies mainly on the subject’s capacity for critical self-reflection. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=german%20philosophy" title="german philosophy">german philosophy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adorno" title=" adorno"> adorno</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20crisis" title=" environmental crisis"> environmental crisis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154918/towards-an-adornian-critical-theory-of-the-environment" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154918.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">97</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4353</span> Women's Contemporary Dystopias: Feminist Protagonists Taking Back Control</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Natalia%20Fontes%20De%20Oliveira">Natalia Fontes De Oliveira</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Canadian author Margaret Atwood deconstructs the tainted dichotomies between women and men by embracing the disorder throughout her dystopias. In Atwood’s The Testaments, nature can be seen as a background to the story as well as a metaphorical expression of the characters’ state of mind, nevertheless, the protagonists’ nature writing portrays conveys a curiosity to the pre-established sanctions of a docile garden, viewing nature as an autonomous entity, especially when they are away from the confinements of Gilead’s regime. The three narrating protagonists, Agnes, Aunt Lydia, and Nicole, use nature writing subversively as a form of rebellion. This paper investigates how the three protagonists narrate nature through an intimist point of view, with sensibility to observe the multiple relationships among humanity, nature, and the impositions of a theocratic ultra conservative patriarchal society. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=contemporary%20literature" title="contemporary literature">contemporary literature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dystopias" title=" dystopias"> dystopias</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=feminism" title=" feminism"> feminism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=women%E2%80%99s%20writing" title=" women’s writing"> women’s writing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136055/womens-contemporary-dystopias-feminist-protagonists-taking-back-control" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136055.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">169</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4352</span> Mental Health Clinicians’ Perceptions of Nature-Based Interventions Within Community Mental Health Services: Evidence from Australia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rachel%20Tambyah">Rachel Tambyah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katarzyna%20Olco%C5%84"> Katarzyna Olcoń</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Julaine%20Allan"> Julaine Allan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pete%20Destry"> Pete Destry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Astell-Burt"> Thomas Astell-Burt</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The rising social and financial burden of mental illness indicates an urgent need to explore interventions that can be used as well as or instead of traditional treatments. Research fields such as biomimicry, biomimetics, bionics, bio-inspired computing, and nature-inspired designs have explored nature-made artifacts and systems to understand nature’s mechanisms and intelligence. Learning from nature, the researchers have generated sustainable designs and innovation in a variety of fields such as energy, architecture, agriculture, transportation, communication, and medicine. Axiomatic design offers a method to judge if a design is good. This paper analyzes design aspects of one of the nature’s amazing object: chicken egg. The functional requirements (FRs) of components of the object are tabulated and mapped on to nature-chosen design parameters (DPs). The ‘independence axiom’ of the axiomatic design methodology is applied to analyze couplings and to evaluate if eggs’ design is good (i.e., uncoupled design) or bad (i.e., coupled design). The analysis revealed that eggs design is a good design, i.e., uncoupled design. This approach can be applied to any nature’s artifacts to judge whether their design is a good or a bad. This methodology is valuable for biomimicry studies. This approach can also be a very useful teaching design consideration of biology and bio-inspired innovation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=uncoupled%20design" title="uncoupled design">uncoupled design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=axiomatic%20design" title=" axiomatic design"> axiomatic design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature%20design" title=" nature design"> nature design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20evaluation" title=" design evaluation"> design evaluation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129725/an-analysis-of-uncoupled-designs-in-chicken-egg" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129725.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">173</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4350</span> Living Lab as a Service: Developing Context Induced, Co-creational Innovation Routines as a Process Tool for Nature Based Solutions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Immanuel%20Darkwa">Immanuel Darkwa</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Climate change and environmental degradation are existential threats requiring urgent transnational action. The resulting framework proposes a Nature-Based-Centred-Thinking process tool involving ‘green’ routines supported by a focal unit and a collaborative network, and that allows for the development of nature-based solutions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=living%20labs" title="living labs">living labs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature-based%20solutions" title=" nature-based solutions"> nature-based solutions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature-%20based%20design" title=" nature- based design"> nature- based design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=innovation%20processes" title=" innovation processes"> innovation processes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=innovation%20routines%20and%20tools" title=" innovation routines and tools"> innovation routines and tools</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176147/living-lab-as-a-service-developing-context-induced-co-creational-innovation-routines-as-a-process-tool-for-nature-based-solutions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176147.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">76</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4349</span> Exploring the Dualistic Nature of Design: Integrative Perspectives and Methodological Approaches in Design Research</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joni%20Agung%20Sudarmanto">Joni Agung Sudarmanto</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The concept of design has historically been elusive and characterized by its fluidity, leading to divergent viewpoints on its fundamental nature. Guy Julier views design as inherent in material culture, while Sanders sees it as a collective endeavor focusing on the outcome. Design's dualistic nature, procedural and outcome-oriented, spans various domains, including objects, individuals, and the environment. This comprehensive view of design challenges the notion that design practice is distinct from research, highlighting their shared exploratory nature. The article explores methodological techniques in design research and the three prevalent approaches: "into design," "through design," and "for design." The contradictory meanings of design arise from its etymology and its duality as both process and result, leading to its integrative nature across objects, humans, and the environment. The parallels between design and research activities, underscoring their exploratory and knowledge-generating nature, are situated within creative research, challenging the perception of design practice as separate from research endeavors. The "into design" approach encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, enriching design research with diverse perspectives. The "through design" approach bridges theory and practice, producing more practical outcomes. The "for design" approach supports specific design solutions, providing designers with valuable guidance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dualistic%20nature%20of%20design" title="dualistic nature of design">dualistic nature of design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=integrative%20perspectives" title=" integrative perspectives"> integrative perspectives</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=methodological%20approaches" title=" methodological approaches"> methodological approaches</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20research" title=" design research"> design research</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/174843/exploring-the-dualistic-nature-of-design-integrative-perspectives-and-methodological-approaches-in-design-research" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/174843.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">71</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4348</span> Biomimetic Architecture: The Bio Process to an Eco-Friendly Design</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Odeyemi%20Ifeoluwayemi">Odeyemi Ifeoluwayemi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maha%20Joushua"> Maha Joushua</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fulani%20Omoyeni"> Fulani Omoyeni</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the search for sustainability, over time, architectural approaches to design have moved from just nature inspired design to the study of nature’s principles to produce effective designs that solve the issue of sustainability. Nature has established materials, shapes and processes that are effective right from a minor scale to an enormous scale. A branch of human knowledge that studies nature is called biology. Biology helps us to grasp and understand nature. Biomimicry is a new way of viewing and valuing nature, based not on what we can extract from the natural world but on what we can learn from it. Life has sustained on the earth for the last 3.85 billion years, and it is necessary for us to find out how life has been able to stay sustained for that long. The building must teach the society new ecological morals, thus, a better understanding of how nature works can usefully inspire architectural designs to resolve issues that have already been resolved by nature. This will not only help in creating a healthy environment but will also produce positive environmental impacts. Biomimetic Architecture connects and reproduces the ideologies found in nature in order to create built environment which benefit people and other living creatures as well as preserving it for the future. Understanding the bioprocess would lead to the establishment of ecological approaches that serve as a platform for creating a built environment that goes beyond sustaining current settings but also mimic nature’s regenerative ecosystem. This paper aims to explain these design methods under the name of biomimicry and biomimetic architecture by reviewing literature and research works done by examining these approaches classified as forms, processes and ecosystems. It is expected that this research will provide information that would, therefore, lead to the creation of buildings that are eco-friendly and provide greater comfort to the populaces. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biomimetic%20architecture" title="biomimetic architecture">biomimetic architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biomimicry" title=" biomimicry"> biomimicry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ecological%20design" title=" ecological design"> ecological design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47176/biomimetic-architecture-the-bio-process-to-an-eco-friendly-design" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47176.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">256</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4347</span> The Psychological Effects of Nature on Subjective Well-Being: An Experimental Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tatjana%20Kochetkova">Tatjana Kochetkova</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper explores the pivotal role of environmental education, specifically outdoor education, in facilitating a psychological connection to nature among young adults. This research aims to contribute to building an empirical and conceptual basis of ecopsychology by providing a picture of psyche-nature interaction. It presents the results of the four-day connection-to-nature workshop. It intends to find out the effects of the awareness of nature on subjective well-being and perception of the meaning of life. This led to finding a battery-recharging effect of nature and the influence of nature at four levels of awareness: external physical perception, internal (bodily) sensation, emotions, and existential meaning. The research on the psychological bond of humans with the natural environment, the subject of ecopsychology, is still in its infancy. However, despite several courageous and fruitful attempts, there are still no direct answers to the fundamental questions about the way in which the natural environment influences humans and the specific role of nature in the human psyche. The urge to address this question was the primary reason for the current experiment. The methodology of this study was taken from the study of Patterson, and from White and Hendee. The methodology included a series of assignments on the perception of nature (the exercises are described in the attachment). Experiences were noted in a personal diary, which we used later for analysis. There are many trustworthy claims that contact with nature has positive effects on human subjective well-being and that it is of essential psychological and spiritual value. But, there is a need for more support and theoretical explanation for this phenomenon. As a contribution to filling these gaps, this qualitative study was conducted. The aim of this study is to explore the psychological effects of short-term awareness of wilderness on one’s subjective well-being and on one’s sense of the meaning of life. This specific study is based on the more general hypothesis that there are positive relationships between the experience of wilderness and the development of the self, feelings of community, and spiritual development. It restricted the study of the psychological effects of short term stay in nature to two variables (subjective well-being and the sense of meaning of life). The study aimed at (i) testing the hypothesis that there are positive effects of the awareness of wilderness on the subjective sense of well-being and meaning in life, (ii) understanding the nature of the psychological need for wilderness. Although there is a substantial amount of data on the psychological benefits of nature, we still lack a theory that explains the findings. The present research aims to contribute to such a theory. This is an experiment aimed specifically at the effects of nature on the sense of well-being and meaning in life. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20education" title="environmental education">environmental education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=psychological%20connection%20to%20nature" title=" psychological connection to nature"> psychological connection to nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=subjective%20well-being" title=" subjective well-being"> subjective well-being</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=symbolic%20meaning%20of%20nature" title=" symbolic meaning of nature"> symbolic meaning of nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emotional%20reaction%20to%20nature" title=" emotional reaction to nature"> emotional reaction to nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=meaning%20of%20life" title=" meaning of life"> meaning of life</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/177603/the-psychological-effects-of-nature-on-subjective-well-being-an-experimental-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/177603.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">72</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4346</span> Nature-Based Solutions: An Intelligent Method to Enhance Urban Resilience in Response to Climate Change</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mario%20Calabrese">Mario Calabrese</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Iandolo"> Francesca Iandolo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pietro%20Vito"> Pietro Vito</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Raffaele%20D%27Amore"> Raffaele D'Amore</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesco%20Caputo"> Francesco Caputo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This article presents a synopsis of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), a fresh and emerging concept in mitigating and adapting to climate change. Just peace theorists explore normative behaviour after war, including the duties and responsibilities of different actors and peacebuilding strategies to achieve a lasting, positive peace. Environmental peace ethicists have argued for including the role of nature in the Ethics of War and Peace. This text explores the question of why and how to rethink the value of nature in post-war scenarios. The aim is to include the rights of nature within a maximalist account of reconstruction by highlighting sumak kawsay in the post-war period. Destruction of nature is usually considered collateral damage in war scenarios. Common universal standards for post-war reconstruction are restitution, compensation and reparation programmes, which is mostly anthropocentric approach. The problem of reconstruction in the aftermath of war is the instrumental value of nature. The responsibility to rebuild needs to be revisited within a non-anthropocentric context. There is an ongoing debate about a minimalist or maximalist approach to post-war reconstruction. While Michael Walzer argues for minimalist in-and-out interventions, Alex Bellamy argues for maximalist strategies such as the responsibility to protect, a UN-concept on how face mass atrocity crimes and how to reconstruct peace. While supporting the tradition of maximalist responsibility to rebuild, these normative post-Bellum concepts do not yet sufficiently consider the rights of nature in the aftermath of war. While reconstruction of infrastructures seems important and necessary, concepts that strengthen the intrinsic value of nature in post-bellum measures must also be included. Peace is not Just Peace without a thriving nature that provides the conditions and resources to live and guarantee human rights. Ecuador's indigenous philosophy of life can contribute to the restoration of nature after war by changing the perspective on the value of nature. The sumak kawsay includes the de-hierarchisation of humans and nature and the principle of reciprocity towards nature. Transferring this idea of life and interconnectedness to post-war reconstruction practices, post bellum perpetrators have restorative obligations not only to people but also to nature. This maximalist approach would include both a restitutive principle, by restoring the balance between humans and nature, and a retributive principle, by punishing the perpetrators through compensatory duties to nature. A maximalist approach to post-war reconstruction that takes into account the rights of nature expands the normative post-war questions to include a more complex field of responsibilities. After a war, Just Peace is restored once not only human rights but also the rights of nature are secured. A minimalist post-bellum approach to reconstruction does not locate future problems at their source and does not offer a solution for the inclusion of obligations to nature. There is a lack of obligations towards nature after a war, which can be changed through a different perspective: The indigenous philosophy of life provides the necessary principles for a comprehensive reconstruction of Just Peace. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=normative%20ethics" title="normative ethics">normative ethics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=peace" title=" peace"> peace</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=post-war" title=" post-war"> post-war</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sumak%20kawsay" title=" sumak kawsay"> sumak kawsay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=applied%20ethics" title=" applied ethics"> applied ethics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156655/on-implementing-sumak-kawsay-in-post-bellum-principles-the-reconstruction-of-natural-damage-in-the-aftermath-of-war" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/156655.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">78</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4344</span> Environmental Users’ Perceptions on Tourism in the Grangettes Nature Reserve, Switzerland</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ralph%20Lugon">Ralph Lugon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Randolf%20Ramseyer"> Randolf Ramseyer</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The beauty and quality of the natural heritage can be appreciated in different ways by different users, but the delicate balance of the environment in a nature reserve must be respected. The case of the territorial anchorage of the Grangettes natural reserve gives an interesting insight into the users' perception of the environmental constraints and standards of tourist activities. The nature reserve was once conceived as a sanctuary of natural heritage, a place where flora and fauna could flourish with minimal human interference. However, over time and with the transition to modernity, the values and meanings of the reserve have changed for visitors and the people living in the surrounding area. Today, The Grangettes nature reserve is a place of relaxation for urban dwellers with limited knowledge of nature and a lack of awareness of conservation issues. As a result, the reserve is now threatened by the negative impacts of human activities and mass tourism on its environment. Les Grangettes is a nature reserve that faces the challenge of preserving biodiversity while managing tourist flows. Ways must be found to accommodate new types of visitors from towns and cities who are looking for new activities, quality services and facilities, as well as aesthetic inspiration. To ensure the long-term conservation of the area, the flow of tourists must be carefully controlled. Through a dual qualitative-quantitative approach in 2021-22, this paper explores new visitor trends, changes in the reserve, and potential consequences for other stakeholders in the ecosystem. The purpose of this research is to assess users' perceptions of environmental constraints and standards on tourist activities in a nature reserve. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=outdoor%20recreation" title="outdoor recreation">outdoor recreation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature-based%20tourism" title=" nature-based tourism"> nature-based tourism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=over%20tourism" title=" over tourism"> over tourism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=protected%20area" title=" protected area"> protected area</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=user%27s%20perceptions" title=" user's perceptions"> user's perceptions</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/171053/environmental-users-perceptions-on-tourism-in-the-grangettes-nature-reserve-switzerland" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/171053.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">79</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4343</span> Understanding Willingness to Engage in pro-Environmental Behaviour among Recreational Anglers in South Africa</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kelvin%20Mwaba">Kelvin Mwaba</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nicole%20Strickland"> Nicole Strickland</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background and Objectives: Overexploitation and illegal fishing have been identified as the primary cause of the global decline in the fish stock. While commercial companies and small-scale fishing sectors are strictly regulated in South Africa, recreational anglers are not. The underlying assumption seems to be that recreational anglers can self-regulate. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship that recreational anglers have with nature and how this relationship can predict unlawful fishing practices. Methods: Using a survey design, 99 self-identified recreational anglers were recruited through convenient sampling. The anglers were accessed from fishing tackle shops around False Bay in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire that consisted of pro-environmental behavior survey and the Nature Relatedness Scale. Results: Data analyses indicated that significant differences with regard to nature relatedness on the basis of participants’ age and level of education. Older and more educated anglers scored higher on nature relatedness than younger and less educated anglers. Logistic regression analysis showed that nature relatedness was a significant predictor of pro-environmental behaviors (R²= 0.061). Discussion and Conclusion: The findings of the present study provide support regarding the importance of encouraging healthy and sustainable relationships between humans and nature. Combating harmful fishing practices can achieve through understanding and promoting human care for nature among anglers and others involved in fishing. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pro-environmental" title="pro-environmental">pro-environmental</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=behavior" title=" behavior"> behavior</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anglers" title=" anglers"> anglers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=South%20Africa" title=" South Africa"> South Africa</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/88789/understanding-willingness-to-engage-in-pro-environmental-behaviour-among-recreational-anglers-in-south-africa" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/88789.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">369</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4342</span> Bio-Inspired Design Approach Analysis: A Case Study of Antoni Gaudi and Santiago Calatrava</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marzieh%20Imani">Marzieh Imani</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <em>Antoni Gaudi</em> and <em>Santiago Calatrava</em> have reputation for designing bio-inspired creative and technical buildings. Even though they have followed different independent approaches towards design, the source of bio-inspiration seems to be common. Taking a closer look at their projects reveals that <em>Calatrava</em> has been influenced by <em>Gaudi</em> in terms of interpreting nature and applying natural principles into the design process. This research firstly discusses the dialogue between Biomimicry and architecture. This review also explores human/nature discourse during the history by focusing on how nature revealed itself to the fine arts. This is explained by introducing <em>naturalism</em> and r<em>omantic</em> style in architecture as the outcome of designers’ inclination towards nature. Reviewing the literature, theoretical background and practical illustration of nature have been included. The most dominant practical aspects of imitating nature are form and function. Nature has been reflected in architectural science resulted in shaping different architectural styles such as organic, green, sustainable, bionic, and biomorphic. By defining a set of common aspects of Gaudi and <em>Calatrava</em>‘s design approach and by considering biomimetic design categories (organism, ecosystem, and behaviour as the main division and form, function, process, material, and construction as subdivisions), <em>Gaudi’s</em> and <em>Calatrava</em>’s project have been analysed. This analysis explores if their design approaches are equivalent or different. Based on this analysis, <em>Gaudi</em>’s architecture can be recognised as <em>biomorphic</em> while <em>Calatrava</em>’s projects are literally biomimetic. Referring to these architects, this review suggests a new set of principles by which a bio-inspired project can be determined either biomorphic or biomimetic. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biomimicry" title="biomimicry">biomimicry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Calatrava" title=" Calatrava"> Calatrava</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gaudi" title=" Gaudi"> Gaudi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74401/bio-inspired-design-approach-analysis-a-case-study-of-antoni-gaudi-and-santiago-calatrava" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74401.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">288</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4341</span> Man-Nature relationship in Bishop’s Poetry: An Eco-Critical Reading of the Selected Poems</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Khaled%20Abkar%20Alkodimi">Khaled Abkar Alkodimi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper attempts to explore Bishop’s eco-poetics and environmental consciousness from an ecocritical perspective. It focuses on her representations of animals, environments, and natural phenomena and the connection between a broad range of human activities and flora, fauna habitats. Indeed, Bishop shows a sense of human responsibility towards the earth in her peculiar treatment of place and livestock, which appears to be more than a static growth process. Her poetry is totally contrary to egoism and egotism, and this can be easily noticed in her subjective understanding of nature and creatures. The findings show Bishop as an eco-poet who committed herself and her poetry to highlight the significance of nature and world life at large. This is obvious through her representation of natural phenomena such as seasonal cycles, weather, and physical and ecological elements, including air, earth, and water, which essentially constitute and inform the poet’s environmental thoughts. Examining Bishop’s conception of a human relationship with ‘external nature through the examination of her poetic language, this study shows how the environmental imagination can suggest social responsibility to readers. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=elizabeth%20bishop" title="elizabeth bishop">elizabeth bishop</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=eco-criticism" title=" eco-criticism"> eco-criticism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=eco-poetry" title=" eco-poetry"> eco-poetry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20consciousness" title=" environmental consciousness"> environmental consciousness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=man-nature%20relationship" title=" man-nature relationship"> man-nature relationship</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141765/man-nature-relationship-in-bishops-poetry-an-eco-critical-reading-of-the-selected-poems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141765.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">193</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4340</span> Evaluation of the Families' Psychological Nature and the Relationship between the Academic Success According to the Students' Opinion</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sebnem%20Erismen">Sebnem Erismen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ahmet%20Guneyli"> Ahmet Guneyli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Azize%20Ummanel"> Azize Ummanel</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the students' academic success and families' psychological nature. Narrative analysis of a film forms an essential aspect of the discourse of scholarship in film studies. Narration is the chain of events occurring in time and space. The notion of narrative provides the idea of coherence and wholeness to the story. There are various components that the narration carries, one of which is the perspective or point of view. The narrator plays the role of a mediator between the film and the audience; thus, his perspective influences the way the audience interprets the film. Feature films have been analyzed through narrative points of view; however, this research intends to conduct it from the angle of a nature documentary film. The study will examine narrative viewpoints unique to nature documentary films using three ecological documentary films-The Cove (2009), Tale of a forest (2012), and Before the flood (2016). This research will apply the framework of narrative theory and will investigate the impact of the different types of narrative points of view, as each portrays the human-nature relationship from a different standpoint, and it will also study the effect that the narrative point of view has on the mode of these eco documentaries. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ecodocumentary" title="ecodocumentary">ecodocumentary</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=narrative" title=" narrative"> narrative</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human-nature%20relationship" title=" human-nature relationship"> human-nature relationship</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=point%20of%20view" title=" point of view"> point of view</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/150091/narrative-point-of-view-in-nature-documentary-films-a-study-of-the-cove-2009-tale-of-a-forest-2012-and-before-the-flood-2016" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/150091.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">89</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4338</span> Exposure to Nature: An Underutilized Component of Student Mental Health</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jeremy%20Bekker">Jeremy Bekker</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guy%20%20Salazar"> Guy Salazar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Introduction: Nature-exposure interventions on university campuses may serve as an effective addition to overburdened counseling and student support centers. Nature-exposure interventions can work as a preventative well-being enhancement measure on campuses, which can be used adjacently with existing health resources. Specifically, this paper analyzes how spending time in nature impacts psychological well-being, cognitive functioning, and physical health. The poster covers the core findings and recommendations of this paper, which has been previously published in the BYU undergraduate psychology journal Intuition. Research Goals and Method: The goal of this paper was to outline the potential benefits of nature exposure for students’ physical health, mental well-being, and academic success. Another objective of this paper was to outline potential research-based interventions that use campus green spaces to improve student outcomes. Given that the core objective of this paper was to identify and establish research-based nature exposure interventions that could be used on college campuses, a broad literature review focused on these areas. Specifically, the databases Scopus and PsycINFO were used to screen for research focused on psychological well-being, physical health, cognitive functioning, and nature exposure interventions. Outcomes: Nature exposure has been shown to help increase positive affect, life satisfaction, happiness, coping ability and subjective well-being. Further, nature exposure has been shown to decrease negative affect, lower mental distress, reduce cognitive load, and decrease negative psychological symptoms. Finally, nature exposure has been shown to lead to better physical health. Findings and Recommendations: Potential interventions include adding green space to university buildings and grounds, dedicating already natural environments as nature restoration areas, and providing means for outdoor excursions. Potential limitations and suggested areas for future research are also addressed. Many campuses already contain green spaces, defined as any part of an environment that is predominately made of natural elements, and these green spaces comprise an untapped resource that is relatively cheap and simple. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature%20exposure" title="nature exposure">nature exposure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=preventative%20care" title=" preventative care"> preventative care</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=undergraduate%20mental%20health" title=" undergraduate mental health"> undergraduate mental health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=well-being%20intervention" title=" well-being intervention"> well-being intervention</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139012/exposure-to-nature-an-underutilized-component-of-student-mental-health" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139012.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">214</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4337</span> From Vertigo to Verticality: An Example of Phenomenological Design in Architecture</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=E.%20Osorio%20Schmied">E. Osorio Schmied</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Architects commonly attempt a depiction of organic forms when their works are inspired by nature, regardless of the building site. Nevertheless it is also possible to try matching structures with natural scenery, by applying a phenomenological approach in terms of spatial operations, regarding perceptions from nature through architectural aspects such as protection, views, and orientation. This method acknowledges a relationship between place and space, where intentions towards tangible facts then become design statements. Although spaces resulting from such a process may present an effective response to the environment, they can also offer further outcomes beyond the realm of form. The hypothesis is that, in addition to recognising a bond between architecture and nature, it is also plausible to associate such perceptions with the inner ambient of buildings, by analysing features such as daylight. The case study of a single-family house in a rainforest near Valdivia, Chilean Patagonia is presented, with the intention of addressing the above notions through a discussion of the actual effects of inhabiting a place by way of a series of insights, including a revision of diagrams and photographs that assist in understanding the implications of this design practice. In addition, figures based on post-occupancy behaviour and daylighting performance relate both architectural and environmental issues to a decision-making process motivated by the observation of nature. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=architecture" title="architecture">architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20statements" title=" design statements"> design statements</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=perception" title=" perception"> perception</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/57984/from-vertigo-to-verticality-an-example-of-phenomenological-design-in-architecture" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/57984.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">342</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4336</span> Back to Nature: Addressing the German Nudist Movement’s Colonial Past and Its Repercussions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saskia%20K%C3%B6bschall">Saskia Köbschall</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The idea of ‘being close to nature’ and the ways of achieving this proximity are socially and historically constructed, as are notions of nakedness and nudity. During the colonial period, nudity and clothedness functioned as instruments of racial domination. Nakedness became central to the colonialists’ thinking, to their binary of the ‘civilized’ and those ‘close to nature’, therefore turning the level of perceived unclothedness into a measurement of ‘civilization'. While being ‘one with nature’ continued to be a criterion of backwardness in the colonies, it emerged as a futuristic and avant-garde endeavor in the metropole: In Germany, at the height of its colonial expansion, the Life Reform Movement (Lebensreformbewegung) called for the liberation of the white body from the ‘constraints of civilization’, for its ‘return to nature’ via practices like nudism. Despite this simultaneity, the scholarship of the life reform and the nudist movement in particular does not address the colonial past of the movement or its repercussions in the present. Taking the biography of prominent life reformist Hans Paasche (1881 - 1920) as a starting point, this paper explores the work of imperial legacies in the history and present of the German nudist movement. Paasche started his career as a German colonial officer, participating in the brutal obliteration of the Maji-Maji uprising (1905/06) that claimed the lives of nearly 200.000 people. Once a passionate game hunter, he later became a known nature conservationist; once a self-proclaimed explorer of Africa, he later became one of the most prominent advocates of nudism and vegetarianism. The paper joins conceptual and historical research in order to address the German nudist movement’s colonial past and understand its repercussions in the present. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Germany" title="Germany">Germany</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=life%20reform" title=" life reform"> life reform</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=colonialism" title=" colonialism"> colonialism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=archives" title=" archives"> archives</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nudity" title=" nudity"> nudity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161246/back-to-nature-addressing-the-german-nudist-movements-colonial-past-and-its-repercussions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161246.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">95</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4335</span> Unmanned Air Vehicles against Disasters: Wildfires, Avalanches, Floods</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=%C4%B0smail%20%C5%9Eim%C5%9Feko%C4%9Flu">İsmail Şimşekoğlu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Serkan%20Y%C4%B1lmaz"> Serkan Yılmaz</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> There have been great improvements in technology that caused epoch-making changes in aviation. Thus, we can control air vehicles from ground without pilots in them: The UAVs. Due to UAV’s lack of need of pilots and their small size make them have crucial importance for us. UAVs have variety of usage area, especially in military. However, as soldiers we believe that we can use UAVs for better purposes. In this essay we indicate the usage of UAVs for the sake of saving nature from destruction of disasters by expressing what happened in the past and what can possibly happen in the future, especially in firefighting, preventing avalanches and decreasing the effects of floods. These three disasters cause hazardous consequences to the nature. Wildfires endanger so many lives by burning and destroying what comes in their paths. The numbers of avalanches are increased with the global warming. The changes of seasons triggered floods all over the world that threaten the city life. Besides all of these people may lose their lives in order to intrude these disasters. Drones will do the job without involving people lives. Thus it will diminish the risks so drones will be used for the sake of nature and people. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unmanned%20air%20vehicles" title="unmanned air vehicles">unmanned air vehicles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=firefighting" title=" firefighting"> firefighting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=avalanche" title=" avalanche"> avalanche</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flood" title=" flood "> flood </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/29827/unmanned-air-vehicles-against-disasters-wildfires-avalanches-floods" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/29827.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">444</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4334</span> If the Architecture Is in Harmony With Its Surrounding, It Reconnects People With Nature</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aboubakr%20Mashali">Aboubakr Mashali</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Context: The paper focuses on the relationship between architecture and nature, emphasizing the importance of incorporating natural elements in design to reconnect individuals with the natural environment. It highlights the positive impact of a harmonious architecture on people's well-being and the environment, as well as the concept of sustainable architecture. Research aim: The aim of this research is to showcase how nature can be integrated into architectural designs, ultimately reestablishing a connection between humans and the natural world. Methodology: The research employs an in-depth approach, delving into the subject matter through extensive research and the analysis of case studies. These case studies provide practical examples and insights into successful architectural designs that have effectively incorporated nature. Findings: The findings suggest that when architecture and nature coexist harmoniously, it creates a positive atmosphere and enhances people's wellbeing. The use of materials obtained from nature in their raw or minimally refined form, such as wood, clay, stone, and bamboo, contributes to a natural atmosphere within the built environment. Additionally, a color palette inspired by nature, consisting of earthy tones, green, brown, and rusty shades, further enhances the harmonious relationship between individuals and their surroundings. The paper also discusses the concept of sustainable architecture, where materials used are renewable, and energy consumption is minimal. It acknowledges the efforts of organizations such as the US Green Building Council in promoting sustainable design practices. Theoretical importance: This research contributes to the understanding of the relationship between architecture and nature and highlights the importance of incorporating natural elements into design. It emphasizes the potential of naturefriendly architecture to create greener, resilient, and sustainable cities. Data collection and analysis procedures: The researcher gathered data through comprehensive research, examining existing literature, and studying relevant case studies. The analysis involved studying the successful implementation of nature in architectural design and its impact on individuals and the environment. Question addressed: The research addresses the question of how nature can be incorporated into architectural designs to reconnect humans with the nature. Conclusion: In conclusion, this research highlights the significance of architecture being in harmony with its surrounding, which in turn should be in harmony with nature. By incorporating nature in architectural designs, individuals can rediscover their connection with nature and experience its positive impact on their well-being. The use of natural materials and a color palette inspired by nature further enhances this relationship. Additionally, embracing sustainable design practices contributes to the creation of greener and more resilient cities. This research underscores the importance of integrating nature-friendly architecture to foster a healthier and more sustainable future. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title="nature">nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=architecture" title=" architecture"> architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reconnecting" title=" reconnecting"> reconnecting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=greencities" title=" greencities"> greencities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sustainable" title=" sustainable"> sustainable</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=openspaces" title=" openspaces"> openspaces</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=landscape" title=" landscape"> landscape</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/171487/if-the-architecture-is-in-harmony-with-its-surrounding-it-reconnects-people-with-nature" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/171487.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">73</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4333</span> Guided Energy Theory of a Particle: Answered Questions Arise from Quantum Foundation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Desmond%20Agbolade%20Ademola">Desmond Agbolade Ademola</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This work aimed to introduce a theory, called Guided Energy Theory of a particle that answered questions that arise from quantum foundation, quantum mechanics theory, and interpretation such as: what is nature of wavefunction? Is mathematical formalism of wavefunction correct? Does wavefunction collapse during measurement? Do quantum physical entanglement and many world interpretations really exist? In addition, is there uncertainty in the physical reality of our nature as being concluded in the Quantum theory? We have been able to show by the fundamental analysis presented in this work that the way quantum mechanics theory, and interpretation describes nature is not correlated with physical reality. Because, we discovered amongst others that, (1) Guided energy theory of a particle fundamentally provides complete physical observable series of quantized measurement of a particle momentum, force, energy e.t.c. in a given distance and time.In contrast, quantum mechanics wavefunction describes that nature has inherited probabilistic and indeterministic physical quantities, resulting in unobservable physical quantities that lead to many worldinterpretation.(2) Guided energy theory of a particle fundamentally predicts that it is mathematically possible to determine precise quantized measurementof position and momentum of a particle simultaneously. Because, there is no uncertainty in nature; nature however naturally guides itself against uncertainty. Contrary to the conclusion in quantum mechanics theory that, it is mathematically impossible to determine the position and the momentum of a particle simultaneously. Furthermore, we have been able to show by this theory that, it is mathematically possible to determine quantized measurement of force acting on a particle simultaneously, which is not possible on the premise of quantum mechanics theory. (3) It is evidently shown by our theory that, guided energy does not collapse, only describes the lopsided nature of a particle behavior in motion. This pretty offers us insight on gradual process of engagement - convergence and disengagement – divergence of guided energy holders which further highlight the picture how wave – like behavior return to particle-like behavior and how particle – like behavior return to wave – like behavior respectively. This further proves that the particles’ behavior in motion is oscillatory in nature. The mathematical formalism of Guided energy theory shows that nature is certainty whereas the mathematical formalism of Quantum mechanics theory shows that nature is absolutely probabilistics. In addition, the nature of wavefunction is the guided energy of the wave. In conclusion, the fundamental mathematical formalism of Quantum mechanics theory is wrong. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=momentum" title="momentum">momentum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=physical%20entanglement" title=" physical entanglement"> physical entanglement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wavefunction" title=" wavefunction"> wavefunction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=uncertainty" title=" uncertainty"> uncertainty</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/72416/guided-energy-theory-of-a-particle-answered-questions-arise-from-quantum-foundation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/72416.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">295</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4332</span> Interplay of Imaginary, Symbolic and Real In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Disturbance of Nature</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mahnaz%20Poorshahidi">Mahnaz Poorshahidi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This article is a psychological reading of Shakespeare’s Hamlet applying Lacan’s ideas to work with a new look. Lacan entitled Hamlet ‘tragedy of desire’. He believes that Hamlet is caught up in the desire of his mother. So he is the universal symbol of all human beings, regardless of their sex, who desire their mother, but based on the rules of Nature and Father, this unity is impossible. Hamlet hesitates in fulfilling the task of revenge and the text says nothing about the reasons and motives behind it. However, this essay tries to answer the question and justify Hamlet’s hesitation. There is one question for the readers, which is why Hamlet appears to delay in killing his uncle, despite the fact that this is precisely what he seems to want to do. In 1958-59 Lacan delivered a series of lectures on Hamlet entitled ‘Desire and Its Interpretations’ and called it ‘tragedy of desire’. However, this article will have a new representation of Hamlet’s decision not to take revenge. The research demonstrates that Hamlet has passed through imaginary, symbolic and real stages, which are the natural process of life. Eliminating father means disturbing this natural process. This essay is going to conclude that killing Claudius can break the natural order of life. On the other hand, Claudius has also disturbed nature and is regretful about his deed. Hamlet’s ever-present speech ‘To be or not to be’ reflects his mental turmoil and disturbance of the natural life cycle: Nature. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=desire" title="desire">desire</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=father%20figure" title=" father figure"> father figure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lacan" title=" lacan"> lacan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/138701/interplay-of-imaginary-symbolic-and-real-in-shakespeares-hamlet-disturbance-of-nature" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/138701.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">233</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4331</span> Resolving Conflicts of Constitutional Nature: Inside the Romanian Constitutional Court's Rulings on the Role and Competencies of the Public Authorities</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marieta%20Safta">Marieta Safta</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The separation and balance of state powers constitute the basis of the rule of law. Observance of this principle requires framing of public authorities within the limits of competence established by the Constitution and the law, as well as loyal cooperation between them. From this perspective, the attribution of the constitutional courts for settling legal conflicts of a constitutional nature is an important tool for correcting the tendencies of violation of these limits, as well as for identifying solutions for situations that do not find an explicit regulation in the constitutional texts. The present study analyzes the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court of Romania in the field of legal conflicts of a constitutional nature, revealing, together with the presentation of conflict situations, the vulnerabilities of the constitutional reference texts. It is also highlighted the role of the constitutional courts in the evolution of constitutional law institutions, even in terms of defining and redefining the regime of the forms of government. The conclusion of the study, beyond the subject of legal conflicts of a constitutional nature, bears on the necessity, even more so in this matter, of the certainty of jurisdictional interpretation. This certainty cannot be achieved as long as the interpretation is not authoritative; consequently, the assurance of the effectiveness of constitutional justice constitute a key issue of the rule of law. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=legal%20conflicts%20of%20constitutional%20nature" title="legal conflicts of constitutional nature">legal conflicts of constitutional nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20Constitutional%20Court%20of%20Romania" title=" the Constitutional Court of Romania"> the Constitutional Court of Romania</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20separation%20and%20balance%20of%20powers%20in%20the%20state" title=" the separation and balance of powers in the state"> the separation and balance of powers in the state</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=the%20effectiveness%20of%20constitutional%20justice" title=" the effectiveness of constitutional justice"> the effectiveness of constitutional justice</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98902/resolving-conflicts-of-constitutional-nature-inside-the-romanian-constitutional-courts-rulings-on-the-role-and-competencies-of-the-public-authorities" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98902.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">128</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4330</span> Desert Houses of the Past: Green Buildings of Today</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Baharak%20Shakeri">Baharak Shakeri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seyed%20Hashem%20Hosseini"> Seyed Hashem Hosseini</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The weather in deserts is hot and dry in summers, and cold and dry in winters, and difference of temperature of nights and days sometimes reaches to 28°C. People of deserts have reached some solutions to cope with this climatic condition and to decrease its annoying features. Among these solutions are: constructing houses adjacent to each other, making tall walls, using mud brick and thatch cover, constructing domical arches, cellar, and wind catcher, which are together the devices to control the adversity of hot weather in summers and cold weather in winters. Using these solutions, the people of deserts have succeeded to make the best use with the least energy consumption, and to minimize the damage on the nature and environment, and in short, they are friends of the nature, which is a step toward the objectives of green buildings. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=desert%20house" title="desert house">desert house</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=green%20building" title=" green building"> green building</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Iran" title=" Iran"> Iran</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature" title=" nature"> nature</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/3020/desert-houses-of-the-past-green-buildings-of-today" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/3020.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">337</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4329</span> Gaming Tools for Efficient Low Cost Urban Planning Using Nature Based Solutions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ioannis%20Kavouras">Ioannis Kavouras</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eftychios%20Protopapadakis"> Eftychios Protopapadakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emmanuel%20Sardis"> Emmanuel Sardis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anastasios%20Doulamis"> Anastasios Doulamis</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, we investigate the appropriateness and usability of three different free and open-source rendering tools for urban planning visualizations. The process involves the selection of a map area, the 3D rendering transformation, the addition of nature-based solution placement, and the evaluation and assessment of the suggested applied interventions. The manuscript uses a case study involved at Dilaveri Coast, Piraeus region, Greece. Research outcomes indicate that a Blender-OSM implementation is an appropriate tool capable of supporting high-fidelity urban planning, with quick and accurate visibility of related results for end users and involved in NBS transformations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urban%20planning" title="urban planning">urban
