My lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, are they not all<MH3605> my lord’s<MH113> servants<MH5650>? Why<MH4100> does my lord<MH113> seek<MH1245> this<MH2088> thing<MH2088>? Why<MH4100> should he be a cause<MH819> of<MH819> guilt<MH819> to Israel<MH3478>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Nevertheless, the king’s<MH4428> word<MH1697> prevailed<MH2388> against<MH5921> Joab<MH3097>. Therefore, Joab<MH3097> departed<MH3318> and went<MH1980> throughout<MH3605> Israel<MH3478>, and came<MH935> to Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Joab<MH3097> gave<MH5414> the number<MH4557> of the census<MH4662> of the people<MH5971a> to David<MH1732>. Israel<MH3478> was 1,100,000<MH505, 3967> men<MH376> in all<MH3605> who drew<MH8025> the sword<MH2719>; and Judah<MH3063> <i>was</i> 470,000<MH702, 3967, 7657, 505> men<MH376> who drew<MH8025> the sword<MH2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But he did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>count<MH6485> Levi<MH3878> and Benjamin<MH1144> among<MH8432> them, because<MH3588> the king’s<MH4428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>command<MH1697> was<MH8581> abhorrent<MH8581> to Joab<MH3097>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>God<MH430> was displeased<MH7489a, 5869> with this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>, so He struck<MH5221> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>David<MH1732> said<MH559> to God<MH430>, “I have sinned<MH2398> greatly<MH3966>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>by doing<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>. But now<MH6258>, please<MH4994> overlook<MH5674a> Your servant’s<MH5650> guilt<MH5771>, for I have behaved<MH5528> very<MH3966> foolishly<MH5528>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> to Gad<MH1410>, David’s<MH1732> seer<MH2374>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“Go<MH1980> and speak<MH1696> to David<MH1732>, saying<MH559>, ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: “I extend<MH5186> to you three<MH7969> <i>choices;</i> choose<MH977> for yourself one<MH259> of them, which I will do<MH6213a> to you.”’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So Gad<MH1410> came<MH935> to David<MH1732> and said<MH559> to him, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘Take<MH6901> for yourself <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>three<MH7969> years<MH8141> of famine<MH7458>, or three<MH7969> months<MH2320> to be swept<MH5595> away<MH5595> before<MH4480, 6440> your foes<MH6862c> while the sword<MH2719> of your enemies<MH340> overtakes<MH5381> <i>you,</i> or else three<MH7969> days<MH3117> of the sword<MH2719> of the LORD<MH3068>: a plague<MH1698> in the land<MH776>, and the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> destroying<MH7843> throughout<MH3605> the territory<MH1366> of Israel<MH3478>.’ Now<MH6258>, therefore, consider<MH7200> what<MH4100> answer<MH1697> I shall bring<MH7725> back<MH7725> to Him who sent<MH7971> me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Gad<MH1410>, “I am<MH6887a> in<MH6887a> great<MH3966> distress<MH6887a>; please<MH4994> let me fall<MH5307> into the hand<MH3027> of the LORD<MH3068>, for His mercies<MH7356> are very<MH3966> great<MH7227a>. But do not let me fall<MH5307> into human<MH120> hands<MH3027>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>sent<MH5414> a plague<MH1698> on Israel<MH3478>; seventy<MH7657> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478> fell<MH5307>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And God<MH430> sent<MH7971> an angel<MH4397> to Jerusalem<MH3389> to destroy<MH7843> it; but as he was about to destroy<MH7843> <i>it,</i> the LORD<MH3068> saw<MH7200> and was<MH5162> sorry<MH5162> about<MH5921> the catastrophe<MH7463a>, and said<MH559> to the destroying<MH7843> angel<MH4397>, “It is enough<MH7227a>; now<MH6258> relax<MH7503> your hand<MH3027>.” And the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> was standing<MH5975> by the threshing<MH1637> floor<MH1637> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Ornan<MH771> the Jebusite<MH2983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> raised<MH5375> his eyes<MH5869> and saw<MH7200> the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> standing<MH5975> between<MH996> earth<MH776> and heaven<MH8064>, with his drawn<MH8025> sword<MH2719> in his hand<MH3027> stretched<MH5186> out<MH5186> over<MH5921> Jerusalem<MH3389>. Then David<MH1732> and the elders<MH2205>, covered<MH3680> with sackcloth<MH8242>, fell<MH5307> on their faces<MH6440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> said<MH559> to God<MH430>, “Is it not I who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>commanded<MH559> to count<MH4487> the people<MH5971a>? Indeed, I am the one who<MH834> has sinned<MH2398> and acted<MH7489a> very<MH7489a> wickedly<MH7489a>, but these<MH428> sheep<MH6629>, what<MH4100> have they done<MH6213a>? LORD<MH3068>, my God<MH430>, just<MH4994> let Your hand<MH3027> be against me and my father’s<MH1> household<MH1004>, and not against Your people<MH5971a> as a plague<MH4046>.” <p class="hdg">David’s Altar</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>commanded<MH559> Gad<MH1410> to say<MH559> to David<MH1732>, that David<MH1732> was to go<MH5927> up<MH5927> and build<MH6965> an altar<MH4196> to the LORD<MH3068> on the threshing<MH1637> floor<MH1637> of Ornan<MH771> the Jebusite<MH2983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> at the word<MH1697> of Gad<MH1410>, which<MH834> he spoke<MH1696> in the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Now Ornan<MH771> turned<MH7725> back<MH7725> and saw<MH7200> the angel<MH4397>, and his four<MH702> sons<MH1121> <i>who were</i> with him hid<MH2244> themselves. And Ornan<MH771> was threshing<MH1758> wheat<MH2406>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>As David<MH1732> came<MH935> to Ornan<MH771>, Ornan<MH771> looked<MH5027> and saw<MH7200> David<MH1732>, and went<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the threshing<MH1637> floor<MH1637> and prostrated<MH2331c> himself to David<MH1732> with his face<MH639> to the ground<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Ornan<MH771>, “Give<MH5414> me the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>site<MH4725> of <i>this</i> threshing<MH1637> floor<MH1637>, so that I may build<MH1129> on it an altar<MH4196> to the LORD<MH3068>; you shall give<MH5414> it to me for the full<MH4392> price<MH3701>, so that the plague<MH4046> may be brought<MH6113> to<MH6113> a<MH6113> halt<MH6113> from the people<MH5971a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But Ornan<MH771> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, “Take<MH3947> <i>it</i> for yourself, and may my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428> do<MH6213a> what<MH2896a> is<MH2896a> good<MH2896a> in his sight<MH5869>. See<MH7200>, I am giving<MH5414> the oxen<MH1241> for burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a>, and the threshing<MH4173> sledges<MH4173> for wood<MH6086> and the wheat<MH2406> for the grain offering<MH4503>; I am giving<MH5414> <i>it</i> all<MH3605>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Nevertheless, King<MH4428> David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Ornan<MH771>, “No<MH3808>, but I will certainly<MH7069> buy<MH7069> <i>it</i> for the full<MH4392> price<MH3701>; for I will not take<MH5375> what<MH834> is yours for the LORD<MH3068>, nor offer<MH5927> a burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>which<MH2600> costs<MH2600> me nothing<MH2600>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> gave<MH5414> Ornan<MH771> six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> shekels<MH8255> of gold<MH2091> by weight<MH4948> for the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>site<MH4725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/21-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> built<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> there<MH8033> to the LORD<MH3068>, and offered<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> and peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002>.
