even<MH1571> the flocks<MH6629> and the herds<MH1241> are not to graze<MH7462a> in front<MH4136> of that mountain<MH2022>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So he cut<MH6458> out<MH6458> two<MH8147> stone<MH68> tablets<MH3871> like the former<MH7223> ones<MH7223>, and Moses<MH4872> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> and went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Mount<MH2022> Sinai<MH5514>, as the LORD<MH3068> had commanded<MH6680> him, and he took<MH3947> <i>the</i> two<MH8147> stone<MH68> tablets<MH3871> in his hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> descended<MH3381> in the cloud<MH6051> and stood<MH3320> there<MH8033> with him as he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>called<MH7121> upon the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> passed<MH5674a> by<MH5674a> in front<MH6440> of him and proclaimed<MH7121>, “The LORD<MH3068>, the LORD<MH3068> God<MH410>, compassionate<MH7349> and merciful<MH2587>, slow<MH750> to anger<MH639>, and abounding<MH7227a> in faithfulness<MH2617a> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>truth<MH571>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>who keeps<MH5341> faithfulness<MH2617a> for thousands<MH505>, who forgives<MH5375> wrongdoing<MH5771>, violation<MH6588> <i>of His Law,</i> and sin<MH2403a>; yet He will by<MH5352> no<MH3808> means<MH5352> leave<MH5352> <i>the guilty</i> unpunished<MH5352>, inflicting<MH6485> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>punishment<MH5771> of fathers<MH1> on the children<MH1121> and on the grandchildren<MH1121> to the third<MH8029> and fourth<MH7256> generations.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And Moses<MH4872> hurried<MH4116> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>to bow<MH6915> low<MH6915> toward<MH413> the ground<MH776> and worship<MH2331c>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559>, “If<MH518> in any<MH4994> way<MH4994> I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in Your sight<MH5869>, Lord<MH136>, please<MH4994> may the Lord<MH136> go<MH1980> along in our midst<MH7130>, even<MH3588> though<MH3588> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>the people<MH5971a> are so obstinate<MH7186, 6203>, and pardon<MH5545> our wrongdoing<MH5771> and our sin<MH2403b>, and take<MH5157> us as<MH5157> Your own <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>possession<MH5157>.” <p class="hdg">The Covenant Renewed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>God said<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, I am going to make<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285>. Before<MH5048> all<MH3605> your people<MH5971a> I will perform<MH6213a> miracles<MH6381> which<MH834> have not been <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>produced<MH1254a> in all<MH3605> the earth<MH776> nor<MH3808> among any<MH3605> of the nations<MH1471>; and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>among<MH7130> whom<MH834> you live will see<MH7200> the working<MH4639> of the LORD<MH3068>, for it is a fearful<MH3372a> thing<MH3372a> that I am going to perform<MH6213a> with you. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Be sure to comply<MH8104> with<MH8104> what<MH834> I am commanding<MH6680> you this day<MH3117>: behold<MH2009>, I am going to drive<MH1644> out<MH1644> the Amorite<MH567> from you, and the Canaanite<MH3669a>, the Hittite<MH2850>, the Perizzite<MH6522>, the Hivite<MH2340>, and the Jebusite<MH2983>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Be<MH8104> careful<MH8104> that you do not make<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776> into which<MH834> you are going<MH935>, or<MH6435> it will become<MH1961> a snare<MH4170> in your midst<MH7130>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But <i>rather,</i> you are to tear<MH5422> down<MH5422> their altars<MH4196> and smash<MH7665> their memorial<MH4676> stones<MH4676>, and cut<MH3772> down<MH3772> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>Asherim<MH842> <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span> —for you shall not worship<MH2331c> any<MH312> other<MH312> god<MH410>, because<MH3588> the LORD<MH3068>, whose name<MH8034> is Jealous<MH7067>, is a jealous<MH7067> God<MH410>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>otherwise<MH6435> you might<MH6435> make<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776>, and they would prostitute<MH2181> themselves with their gods<MH430> and sacrifice<MH2076> to their gods<MH430>, and someone might invite<MH7121> you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>to eat<MH398> of his sacrifice<MH2077>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>and you might take<MH3947> some<MH4480> of his daughters<MH1323> for your sons<MH1121>, and his daughters<MH1323> might prostitute<MH2181> themselves with their gods<MH430> and cause your sons<MH1121> <i>also</i> to prostitute<MH2181> themselves with their gods<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>You shall not make<MH6213a> for yourself <i>any</i> gods<MH430> cast<MH4541a> in<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“You shall keep<MH8104> the Feast<MH2282> of Unleavened<MH4682> Bread<MH4682>. For seven<MH7651> days<MH3117> you are to eat<MH398> unleavened<MH4682> bread<MH4682>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>as I commanded<MH6680> you, at the appointed<MH4150> time<MH4150> in the month<MH2320> of Abib<MH24>; for in the month<MH2320> of Abib<MH24> you came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Egypt<MH4714>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>“The <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>firstborn<MH1060> from every<MH3605> womb<MH7358> belongs to Me, and all<MH3605> your male<MH2145> livestock<MH4735>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>firstborn<MH1060> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>cattle<MH7794> and sheep<MH7716>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>You shall redeem<MH6299> with a lamb<MH7716> the firstborn<MH1060> from a donkey<MH2543>; and if<MH518> you do not redeem<MH6299> <i>it,</i> then you shall break<MH6202> its neck<MH6202>. You shall redeem<MH6299> all<MH3605> the firstborn<MH1060> of your sons<MH1121>. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>None<MH3808> are to appear<MH7200> before<MH6440> Me empty-handed<MH7387>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“You shall work<MH5647> six<MH8337a> days<MH3117>, but on the seventh<MH7637> day<MH3117> you shall rest<MH7673a>; <i>even</i> during plowing<MH2758> time<MH2758> and harvest<MH7105a> you shall rest<MH7673a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And you shall celebrate<MH6213a> the Feast<MH2282> of Weeks<MH7620>, <i>that is,</i> the first<MH1061> fruits<MH1061> of the wheat<MH2406> harvest<MH7105a>, and the Feast<MH2282> of Ingathering<MH614> at the turn<MH8622> of the year<MH8141>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Three<MH7969> times<MH6471> a year<MH8141> all<MH3605> your males<MH2138> are to appear<MH7200> before<MH6440> the Lord<MH113> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>GOD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>For I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>drive<MH3423> out<MH3423> nations<MH1471> from you and enlarge<MH7337> your borders<MH1366>, and no<MH3808> one<MH376> will covet<MH2530> your land<MH776> when you go<MH5927> up<MH5927> three<MH7969> times<MH6471> a year<MH8141> to appear<MH7200> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>“You shall not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>offer<MH7819> the blood<MH1818> of My sacrifice<MH2077> with leavened<MH2557> bread<MH2557>, nor<MH3808> is the sacrifice<MH2077> of the Feast<MH2282> of the Passover<MH6453> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>be left<MH3885a> over<MH3885a> until morning<MH1242>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>“You shall bring<MH935> the very first<MH7225> of the first<MH1061> fruits<MH1061> of your soil<MH127> into the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>. <p class="paragraph"> “You shall not boil<MH1310> a young<MH1423> goat<MH1423> in its mother’s<MH517> milk<MH2461>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, “Write<MH3789> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>down<MH3789> these<MH428> words<MH1697>, for in<MH5921> accordance<MH5921, 6310> with<MH5921> these<MH428> words<MH1697> I have made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with you and with Israel<MH3478>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So he was there<MH8033> with the LORD<MH3068> for forty<MH705> days<MH3117> and forty<MH705> nights<MH3915>; he did not eat<MH398> bread<MH3899> or drink<MH8354> water<MH4325>. And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>He wrote<MH3789> on the tablets<MH3871> the words<MH1697> of the covenant<MH1285>, the Ten<MH6235> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>Commandments<MH1697>. <p class="hdg">Moses’ Face Shines</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when Moses<MH4872> was coming<MH3381> down<MH3381> from Mount<MH2022> Sinai<MH5514> (and the two<MH8147> tablets<MH3871> of the testimony<MH5715> <i>were</i> in Moses’<MH4872> hand<MH3027> as he was coming<MH3381> down<MH3381> from the mountain<MH2022>), that Moses<MH4872> did not know<MH3045> that the skin<MH5785> of his face<MH6440> shone<MH7160> because of his speaking<MH1696> with Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>So when Aaron<MH175> and all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> saw<MH7200> Moses<MH4872>, behold<MH2009>, the skin<MH5785> of his face<MH6440> shone<MH7160>, and they were afraid<MH3372a> to approach<MH5066> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> called<MH7121> to them, and Aaron<MH175> and all<MH3605> the rulers<MH5387a> in the congregation<MH5712> returned<MH7725> to him; and Moses<MH4872> spoke<MH1696> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Afterward<MH310> all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> came<MH5066> near<MH5066>, and he commanded<MH6680> them <i>to do</i> everything<MH3605> that the LORD<MH3068> had spoken<MH1696> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>to him on Mount<MH2022> Sinai<MH5514>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>When Moses<MH4872> had finished<MH3615> speaking<MH1696> with them, he put<MH5414> a veil<MH4533> over<MH5921> his face<MH6440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>But whenever Moses<MH4872> went<MH935> in<MH935> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> to speak<MH1696> with Him, he would take<MH5493> off<MH5493> the veil<MH4533> until<MH5704> he came<MH3318> out<MH3318>; and whenever he came<MH3318> out<MH3318> and spoke<MH1696> to the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> what<MH834> he had been commanded<MH6680>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/34-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> would see<MH7200> the face<MH6440> of Moses<MH4872>, that the skin<MH5785> of Moses’<MH4872> face<MH6440> shone<MH7160>.
