So Eleazar<MH499> and Ithamar<MH385> served<MH3547> as<MH3547> priests<MH3547> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>in the lifetime<MH6440> of their father<MH1> Aaron<MH175>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> to Moses<MH4872>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>“Bring<MH7126> the tribe<MH4294> of Levi<MH3878> forward<MH7126> and present<MH5975> them before<MH6440> Aaron<MH175> the priest<MH3548>, that they may serve<MH8334> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>They shall perform<MH8104> the duties<MH4931> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>him and for the whole<MH3605> congregation<MH5712> in front<MH6440> of the tent<MH168> of meeting<MH4150>, to do<MH5647> the service<MH5656> of the tabernacle<MH4908>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>They shall also take<MH8104> care<MH8104> of all<MH3605> the furnishings<MH3627> of the tent<MH168> of meeting<MH4150>, along with the duties<MH4931> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, to do<MH5647> the service<MH5656> of the tabernacle<MH4908>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So you shall assign<MH5414> the Levites<MH3881> to Aaron<MH175> and to his sons<MH1121>; they are exclusively<MH5414> assigned<MH5414> to him from the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So you shall appoint<MH6485> Aaron<MH175> and his sons<MH1121> that they may <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>keep<MH8104> their priesthood<MH3550>, but the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>layman<MH2114a> who comes<MH7131> near<MH7131> shall be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Again the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> to Moses<MH4872>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>“Now, behold<MH2009>, I have taken<MH3947> the Levites<MH3881> from among<MH8432> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> instead<MH8478> of<MH8478> every<MH3605> firstborn<MH1060>, the firstborn<MH6363a> of the womb<MH7358> among<MH4480> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. So the Levites<MH3881> shall be Mine. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>For all<MH3605> the firstborn<MH1060> are Mine; on the day<MH3117> that I fatally<MH5221> struck<MH5221> all<MH3605> the firstborn<MH1060> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, I sanctified<MH6942> to Myself all<MH3605> the firstborn<MH1060> in Israel<MH3478>, from the human<MH120> <i>firstborn</i> to animals<MH929>. They shall be Mine; I am the LORD<MH3068>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> to Moses<MH4872> in the wilderness<MH4057b> of Sinai<MH5514>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Count<MH6485> the sons<MH1121> of Levi<MH3878> by their fathers’<MH1> households<MH1004>, by their families<MH4940>; every<MH3605> male<MH2145> from a month<MH2320> old<MH1121> and upward<MH4605> you shall count<MH6485>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So Moses<MH4872> counted<MH6485> them according<MH5921> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>word<MH6310> of the LORD<MH3068>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> he had been commanded<MH6680>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>These<MH428>, then, are the sons<MH1121> of Levi<MH3878> by their names<MH8034>: Gershon<MH1648>, Kohath<MH6955>, and Merari<MH4847>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And these<MH428> are the names<MH8034> of the sons<MH1121> of Gershon<MH1648> by their families<MH4940>: Libni<MH3845> and Shimei<MH8096>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and the sons<MH1121> of Kohath<MH6955> by their families<MH4940>: Amram<MH6019> and Izhar<MH3324>, Hebron<MH2275b> and Uzziel<MH5816>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and the sons<MH1121> of Merari<MH4847> by their families<MH4940>: Mahli<MH4249> and Mushi<MH4187>. These<MH428> are the families<MH4940> of the Levites<MH3881> according to their fathers’<MH1> households<MH1004>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Of Gershon<MH1648> <i>was</i> the family<MH4940> of the Libnites<MH3846a> and the family<MH4940> of the Shimeites<MH8097>; these<MH428> <i>were</i> the families<MH4940> of the Gershonites<MH1649>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Their numbered<MH6485> men, in the counting<MH4557> of every<MH3605> male<MH2145> from a month<MH2320> old<MH1121> and upward<MH4605>, their numbered<MH6485> men <i>were</i> 7,500<MH7651, 505, 2568, 3967>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>The families<MH4940> of the Gershonites<MH1649> were to camp<MH2583> behind<MH310> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>tabernacle<MH4908> westward<MH3220>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>and the leader<MH5387a> of the fathers’<MH1> households<MH1004> of the Gershonites<MH1649>: Eliasaph<MH460> the son<MH1121> of Lael<MH3815>. <p class="hdg">Duties of the Levites</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now the duties<MH4931> of the sons<MH1121> of Gershon<MH1648> in the tent<MH168> of meeting<MH4150> <i>included</i> the tabernacle<MH4908> and the tent<MH168>, its covering<MH4372>, and the curtain<MH4539> for the entrance<MH6607> of the tent<MH168> of meeting<MH4150>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>and the curtains<MH7050b> of the courtyard<MH2691a>, the curtain<MH4539> for the entrance<MH6607> of the courtyard<MH2691a> which<MH834> is around<MH5439> the tabernacle<MH4908> and the altar<MH4196>, and its ropes<MH4340>, according to all<MH3605> the service<MH5656> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>concerning them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Of Kohath<MH6955> <i>was</i> the family<MH4940> of the Amramites<MH6020>, the family<MH4940> of the Izharites<MH3325>, the family<MH4940> of the Hebronites<MH2276>, and the family<MH4940> of the Uzzielites<MH5817>; these<MH428> were the families<MH4940> of the Kohathites<MH6956>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>In the counting<MH4557> of every<MH3605> male<MH2145> from a month<MH2320> old<MH1121> and upward<MH4605>, <i>there were</i> 8,600<MH8083, 505, 8337a, 3967>, performing<MH8104> the duties<MH4931> of the sanctuary<MH6944>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>The families<MH4940> of the sons<MH1121> of Kohath<MH6955> were to camp<MH2583> on the south<MH8486> side<MH3409> of the tabernacle<MH4908>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>and the leader<MH5387a> of the fathers’<MH1> households<MH1004> of the Kohathite<MH6956> families<MH4940>: <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Elizaphan<MH469> the son<MH1121> of Uzziel<MH5816>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Now their duties<MH4931> <i>included</i> the ark<MH727>, the table<MH7979>, the lampstand<MH4501>, the altars<MH4196>, the utensils<MH3627> of the sanctuary<MH6944> with which<MH834> they minister<MH8334>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>curtain<MH4539>, and all<MH3605> the service<MH5656> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>concerning them; <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>and Eleazar<MH499> the son<MH1121> of Aaron<MH175> the priest<MH3548> <i>was</i> the head<MH5387a> of the leaders<MH5387a> of Levi<MH3878>, <i>and he had</i> the supervision<MH6486> of those who performed<MH8104> the duties<MH4931> of the sanctuary<MH6944>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Of Merari<MH4847> <i>was</i> the family<MH4940> of the Mahlites<MH4250> and the family<MH4940> of the Mushites<MH4188>; these<MH428> <i>were</i> the families<MH4940> of Merari<MH4847>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Their numbered<MH6485> men in the counting<MH4557> of every<MH3605> male<MH2145> from a month<MH2320> old<MH1121> and upward<MH4605>: 6,200<MH8337a, 505, 3967>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/numbers/3-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And the leader<MH5387a> of the fathers’<MH1> households<MH1004> of the families<MH4940> of Merari<MH4847> <i>was</i> Zuriel<MH6700> the son<MH1121> of Abihail<MH32>.
