And they will perish<MH3615> by sword<MH2719> and famine<MH7458>, and their dead<MH5038> bodies<MH5038> will become<MH1961> food<MH3978> for the birds<MH5775> of the sky<MH8064> and for the animals<MH929> of the earth<MH776>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: “Do not enter<MH935> a house<MH1004> of mourning<MH4798>, or go<MH1980> to mourn<MH5594> or to console<MH5110> them; for I have withdrawn<MH622> My peace<MH7965> from this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, “<i>and My</i> favor<MH2617a> and compassion<MH7356>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Both great<MH1419> people<MH1419> and small<MH6996a> will die<MH4191> in this<MH2088> land<MH776>; they will not be buried<MH6912>, <i>people</i> will not mourn<MH5594> for them, nor<MH3808> will anyone make<MH1413> cuts<MH1413> on himself or have his head<MH7139> shaved<MH7139> for them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><i>People</i> will not break<MH6536> <i>bread</i> in mourning<MH60> for them, to comfort<MH5162> anyone for the dead<MH4191>, nor<MH3808> give<MH8248> them a cup<MH3563a> of consolation<MH8575> to<MH8248> drink<MH8248> for anyone’s father<MH1> or mother<MH517>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Moreover, you shall not go<MH935> into a house<MH1004> of feasting<MH4960> to sit<MH3427> with them to eat<MH398> and drink<MH8354>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>For this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: “Behold<MH2009>, I am going to eliminate<MH7673a> from this<MH2088> place<MH4725>, before your eyes<MH5869> and in your time<MH3117>, the voice<MH6963> of rejoicing<MH8342> and the voice<MH6963> of joy<MH8057>, the voice<MH6963> of the groom<MH2860a> and the voice<MH6963> of the bride<MH3618>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“Now it will happen<MH1961> that, when<MH3588> you tell<MH5046> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697>, they will say<MH559> to you, ‘For<MH5921> what<MH4100> reason<MH5921, 4100> has the LORD<MH3068> declared<MH1696> all<MH3605> this<MH2088> great<MH1419> disaster<MH7463a> against<MH5921> us? And what<MH4100> is our wrongdoing<MH5771>, or what<MH4100> is our sin<MH2403b> that we have committed<MH2398> against the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then you are to say<MH559> to them, ‘<i>It is</i> because<MH5921, 834> your forefathers<MH1> have abandoned<MH5800a> Me,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, ‘and have followed<MH1980, 310> other<MH312> gods<MH430>, and served<MH5647> and worshiped<MH2331c> them; but they have abandoned<MH5800a> Me and have not kept<MH8104> My Law<MH8451>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>You too have done<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a>, <i>even</i> more<MH4480> than<MH4480> your forefathers<MH1>; for behold<MH2009>, each<MH376> one<MH376> of you is following<MH1980, 310> the stubbornness<MH8307> of his own evil<MH7451a> heart<MH3820>, without<MH1115> listening<MH8085> to Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So I will hurl<MH2904> you off<MH4480, 5921> this<MH2088> land<MH776> to the land<MH776> which<MH834> you have not known<MH3045>, <i>neither</i> you nor<MH3808> your fathers<MH1>; and there<MH8033> you will serve<MH5647> other<MH312> gods<MH430> day<MH3119> and night<MH3915>, because<MH834> I will show<MH5414> you no<MH3808> compassion<MH2594>.’ <p class="hdg">God Will Restore Them</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>“Therefore<MH3651> behold<MH2009>, days<MH3117> are coming<MH935>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, “when it will no<MH3808> longer<MH5750> be said<MH559>, ‘As the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, who<MH834> brought<MH5927> up<MH5927> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> out of the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>,’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>but, ‘As the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, who<MH834> brought<MH5927> up<MH5927> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> from the land<MH776> of the north<MH6828> and from all<MH3605> the lands<MH776> where<MH834, 8033> He had banished<MH5080> them.’ For I will restore<MH7725> them to their own land<MH127> which<MH834> I gave<MH5414> to their fathers<MH1>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“Behold<MH2009>, I am going to send<MH7971> for many<MH7227a> fishermen<MH1728>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, “and they will fish<MH1770> for them; and afterward<MH310, 3651> I will send<MH7971> for many<MH7227a> hunters<MH6719a>, and they will hunt<MH6679> them from every<MH3605> mountain<MH2022> and every<MH3605> hill<MH1389> and from the clefts<MH5357> of the rocks<MH5553>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>For My eyes<MH5869> are on all<MH3605> their ways<MH1870>; they are not hidden<MH5641> from My face<MH6440>, nor<MH3808> is their wrongdoing<MH5771> concealed<MH6845> from My eyes<MH5869>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>I will first<MH7223> repay<MH7999a> them double<MH4932> for their wrongdoing<MH5771> and their sin<MH2403b>, because<MH5921> they have defiled<MH2490c> My land<MH776>; they have filled<MH4390> My inheritance<MH5159> with the carcasses<MH5038> of their detestable<MH8251> idols<MH8251> and their abominations<MH8441>.” <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>LORD<MH3068>, my strength<MH5797> and my stronghold<MH4581>, <t><p class="indent1">And my refuge<MH4498> in the day<MH3117> of distress<MH6869a>, <t><p class="indent1">To You the nations<MH1471> will come<MH935> <t><p class="indent1">From the ends<MH657> of the earth<MH776> and say<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">“Our fathers<MH1> have inherited<MH5157> nothing<MH389> but<MH389> falsehood<MH8267>, <t><p class="indent1">Futility<MH1892>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>things of no<MH369> benefit<MH3276>.” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/16-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Can a person<MH120> make<MH6213a> gods<MH430> for himself?
