In der Ebene sind mehrere Krieger mit Schild und Speer und Hirten mit ihren Tieren zu sehen. Zu erkennen sind verschiedenfarbige Rinder an einer Wasserstelle rechts unten und sitzende sowie liegende Dromedare in der Mitte der Grafik. Das Tal ist mit wenigen Pflanzen und Bäumen bewachsen und von Felsen zerklüftet. Die obere Hälfte der Grafik nimmt der weite Blick in die Ferne auf das aufragende Gebirge und den Horizont ein.<br /> <br /> Zum Künstler: 1821 ging Johann Martin Bernatz nach Wien, um dort die Bauschule zu besuchen. Von 1825 bis 1829 begann er eine weitere Ausbildung zum Architekturmaler an der kaiserlichen Akademie der Künste in Wien. Bernatz nutze seine Reisen durch Süddeutschland, das Salzburger Land und die Pfalz, um Zeichnungen von Baudenkmälern und Landschaftsstudien anzufertigen. Diese dienten als Vorlagen für seine Ölgemälde aus seinem Atelier in München. Er unternahm weitere Reisen ins Heilige Land 1836-1837 sowie 1840-1843 nach Indien und über die arabische Halbinsel nach Ostafrika. Dort besuchte er den Stamm der Danakil und das Königreich Schoa.
