Utilizing a transdisciplinary approach that deploys historical analysis as well as cross-cultural and epistemological reflection, this article gestures in such a reconstructive direction from the local vantage point of Asheville, North Carolina's " African and Caribbean " Goombay Festival. One detects in the festival an exotifying, ambiguously celebratory quality that deprioritizes Affrilachian cultural memory in southern Appalachia in favor of consumable public entertainment. The ensuing argument culminates in a preliminary epistemological reimagining of the Asheville Goombay Festival by way of constructive intercourse with the ancestral spirit-based African Jamaican ritual institution of Gumbay Play, an institution that facilitates processes of identity formation through mnemonically engaged ritual performance. The words of the spirituals, inspired in particular by the Biblical stories of the enslavement of the Israelites in Egypt, liberation and the reaching of the Promised Land, mirrored the plight of African Americans not only during slavery, but during the Reconstruction era and up to the time of the Civil Rights movement. This thesis is presented not to amplify decolonization but to honor the value and meaning of the oral society and its indigenous peoples through their culture's traditional and necessary components of language and song. The basis of this thesis pertains to the author's tribal relatives, the Coast Miwok original people of California known as Tamal Michchawmu which literally translates as the People of the West Coast. The author chooses to use this work as an advocacy for the worldview of indigenous peoples, particularly to matriarchal societies in which the Tamal Michchawmu are included. In this thesis, stories and interviews with scholars and with Native Americans studying their language and singing their songs as well as the author's personal experiences are included as support to the theory that language and song are formed from the foundation of a philosophy that is grounded within a peoples relationship with the land. Weldon Norris. It traces the history of performance of the Spiritual through the original Fisk Jubilee Singers, to the Fisk quartet recordings, the solo arrangements sung by Marian Anderson, Paul Robeson, and Roland Hayes, to the large choral arrangements of Hall Johnson and William Dawson, to the Civil Rights era, where the Spirituals returned to one of their original functions as songs of community resistance.
