The number seven often symbolizes completeness or perfection in the Bible, as seen in the seven days of creation. The appearance of another set of seven heads indicates a significant and complete event. In the context of Joseph's interpretation, these seven heads represent seven years, a complete cycle of time. The sprouting of these heads suggests a natural process, yet it foreshadows an unnatural outcome, setting the stage for the impending famine.
thin and scorched by the east wind
The thin heads of grain contrast sharply with the previous healthy ones, symbolizing scarcity and lack. The east wind, known as the "sirocco" or "khamsin," is a hot, dry wind from the desert that can devastate crops in the Near East. This wind is often associated with judgment or hardship in the Bible, as seen in Exodus 10:13, where the east wind brings the plague of locusts upon Egypt. The imagery of the east wind scorching the grain underscores the severity of the coming famine. This serves as a warning and a call to prepare, highlighting God's sovereignty in using natural events to fulfill His purposes.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Pharaoh
The ruler of Egypt who has a troubling dream that Joseph is called to interpret.

2. Joseph
A Hebrew man who is in prison in Egypt but is known for his ability to interpret dreams.

3. Egypt
The setting of the account, a powerful ancient civilization where Joseph rises to prominence.

4. East Wind
A harsh, dry wind from the desert, often associated with destruction and desolation in the Bible.

5. Seven Thin Heads of Grain
Part of Pharaoh's dream, symbolizing a period of famine that follows abundance.
Teaching Points
Understanding God's Sovereignty
The dream and its interpretation highlight God's control over the future and His ability to reveal it to His chosen servants.

Preparation and Wisdom
Joseph's interpretation and subsequent actions teach the importance of preparing for future challenges with wisdom and foresight.

Trust in God's Timing
The sequence of abundance followed by famine reminds believers to trust in God's timing and provision, even when circumstances change.

The Role of Adversity
The east wind, though destructive, serves a purpose in God's plan, reminding us that adversity can lead to growth and reliance on God.

Faithfulness in Small Things
Joseph's rise from prison to power illustrates the principle of being faithful in small things, leading to greater responsibilities.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Genesis 41

Proverbs 25:23 – Is the claim that a north wind brings rain in ancient Israel scientifically accurate or an example of outdated meteorological belief?

Genesis 41:1-7: How is it scientifically or naturally possible for seven emaciated cows to devour seven healthy cows?

Genesis 41:46-49: Could one man's administrative plan truly stockpile enough grain to feed an entire nation (and surrounding regions) for seven years?

Why would the governor of Egypt personally handle these seemingly minor food transactions without delegation (Genesis 42:6)?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(6) East wind.--In Palestine the prevalent winds are those which blow from the west or east, and the latter, coming across arid deserts, is injurious to vegetation. In Egypt the winds generally are from the north or south, but the south-east wind, called Chamsin, blowing from the deserts of Arabia, has even more disastrous effects upon plants than the east wind in Palestine, and from the small dust with which it is laden is baleful also to human life. As there are no words in Hebrew for any except the four principal winds, this south-eastern wind may be meant; or as k?dim, east wind, became the usual name of every wind that burned up vegetation, the term may be employed in a general sense.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 6. - And, behold, seven thin ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them - literally, burnt up of the east, קָדִים being put poetically for the fuller רוּחַ קָדִים. It has been urged that this displays a gross ignorance of the nature, of the climate in Egypt (Bohlen), since a wind directly east is rare in Egypt, and when it does occur is not injurious to vegetation; but, on the other hand, it is open to reply
(1) that direct east winds may be rare in Egypt, but so are dearth and famine such as that described in the narrative equally exceptional (Kalisch);
(2) that the Hebrews having only names to describe the four principal winds, the kadirn might comprise any wind blowing from an easterly direction (Hengstenberg); and
(3) that the south-east wind, "blowing in the months of March and April, is one of the most injurious winds, and of longest continuance" (Havernick). Hengstenberg quotes Ukert as saying, "As long as the south-east wind continues, doors and windows are closed; but the fine dust penetrates everywhere; everything dries up; wooden vessels warp and crack. The thermometer rises suddenly from 16° 20°, up to 30° 36°, and even 38°, Reaumur. This wind works destruction upon everything. The grass withers so that it entirely perishes if this wind blows long" ('Egypt and the Books of Moses,' p. 10).

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
After them,
אַחֲרֵיהֶֽן׃ (’a·ḥă·rê·hen)
Preposition | third person feminine plural
Strong's 310: The hind or following part

seven other
שֶׁ֣בַע (še·ḇa‘)
Number - feminine singular
Strong's 7651: Seven, seven times, a week, an indefinite number

heads of grain
שִׁבֳּלִ֔ים (šib·bo·lîm)
Noun - feminine plural
Strong's 7641: A stream, an ear of grain, a branch

sprouted,
צֹמְח֖וֹת (ṣō·mə·ḥō·wṯ)
Verb - Qal - Participle - feminine plural
Strong's 6779: To sprout, spring up

thin
דַּקּ֖וֹת (daq·qō·wṯ)
Adjective - feminine plural
Strong's 1851: Crushed, small, thin

and scorched
וּשְׁדוּפֹ֣ת (ū·šə·ḏū·p̄ōṯ)
Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - QalPassParticiple - feminine plural construct
Strong's 7710: To scorch, blight

by the east wind.
קָדִ֑ים (qā·ḏîm)
Noun - masculine singular
Strong's 6921: The fore, front part, the East

Links
Genesis 41:6 NIV
Genesis 41:6 NLT
Genesis 41:6 ESV
Genesis 41:6 NASB
Genesis 41:6 KJV

Genesis 41:6 BibleApps.com
Genesis 41:6 Biblia Paralela
Genesis 41:6 Chinese Bible
Genesis 41:6 French Bible
Genesis 41:6 Catholic Bible

OT Law: Genesis 41:6 Behold seven heads of grain thin (Gen.
