This paper proposes that the components of love—intimacy, passion, and commitment—can be metaphorically associated with the qualities essential for resilience in nursing. It argues that these elements enhance nurses’ ability to handle the demands of their profession, thereby supporting their employability and well-being. The strategies highlighted include strengthening emotional support networks (intimacy), fostering engagement (passion), and promoting professional dedication (commitment). Applying Sternberg’s theory in this context provides a novel approach to understanding the intricacies of emotional resilience in the nursing field, suggesting that deeper emotional engagement in one’s work is vital for a resilient and fulfilling career.

1. Introduction

Resilience is a critical attribute in the nursing profession, significantly influencing both the employability and well-being of nurses [1]. General resilience encompasses the ability to "bounce back" from adversity, integrating cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions [2]. A specific aspect of this is emotional resilience, which centers on managing and recovering from emotional stress, particularly in high-pressure scenarios [3]. The nursing profession is characterized by a unique set of emotional and psychological demands, as nurses are often required to provide compassionate care in stressful and, at times, traumatic conditions. Such circumstances can lead to emotional exhaustion and burnout [4]. Emotional resilience is, therefore, essential for empathy, managing burnout, and maintaining emotional stability, especially in caregiving roles [5].

This understanding can be further enriched through Robert Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love [6]. According to Sternberg, love serves as a psychological buffer in high-pressure environments, thereby enhancing emotional resilience. The emotional support derived from relationships and a passion for one’s work can alleviate stress and foster a resilient mindset [7]. Moreover, love acts as a significant psychological buffer in high-stress environments, considerably enhancing resilience [8]. Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love, with its focus on intimacy, passion, and commitment, can be applied within the nursing context to elucidate how these components contribute to emotional resilience.

Consequently, emotional resilience thus becomes indispensable for preserving both personal well-being and professional competence [3]. The well-being of nurses is multidimensional, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional health, all of which are interdependent and contribute to emotional resilience [9]. A supportive work environment, access to mental health resources, and self-care practices along with effective stress management techniques and a healthy work–life balance are pivotal for bolstering a nurse’s overall well-being. Programs that encourage physical health through regular exercise, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and mindfulness practices are crucial in sustaining both well-being and resilience [10].

2. ‘Triangular Theory of Love’ in professional practice: a novel concept

The Triangular Theory of Love, proposed by Robert Sternberg, suggests that love consists of three components: passion, intimacy, and commitment. Passion usually develops first, followed by intimacy and commitment [6]. This progression applies to both romantic relationships and one’s profession. When someone says, "I love my profession," they might initially feel infatuation, marked by passion without intimacy or commitment. True love for a profession includes both passion and commitment, like a mature relationship, where initial excitement evolves into lasting dedication. Over time, individuals develop a deeper understanding and connection to their work, fostering intimacy. Commitment grows as they continue to pursue their profession despite challenges. Actions performed out of such love are enduring and meaningful, reflecting a deep connection to the work [11,12]. This enduring love combines passion, intimacy, and commitment, leading to a fulfilling and sustained career path.

While Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love has not been directly applied to professional contexts, numerous studies have examined its individual components, such as passion and commitment, in relation to job satisfaction [13] and professional engagement [14] of nurses. Moreover, the concept of "professional love" as applied in this study is distinct from romantic love, focusing instead on deep professional attributes that support resilience and well-being in nursing. Using Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love metaphorically, intimacy refers to the empathy and strong connections with patients and colleagues [15], passion represents engagement and enthusiasm for the profession [14], and commitment signifies long-term dedication to professional identity [16]. Unlike romantic love, professional love is centered on fostering positive emotional connections, dedication, and ethical responsibility, thereby enhancing emotional resilience and professional fulfillment without personal or romantic connotations [5].

Internal resources like autonomy, career development, and value alignment, combined with external resources such as leadership support, recognition, and a positive work environment, significantly enhance nurses’ passion and commitment. Autonomy and growth opportunities foster professional confidence and satisfaction, while leadership support and recognition validate their efforts, reducing burnout. Together, these resources promote emotional resilience, job satisfaction, and sustained engagement, ultimately leading to long-term dedication and improved patient care [17].

2.1. Passion: engagement and enthusiasm

Passion, in the context of Sternberg’s theory, involves intense emotions and motivational drives. For nurses, passion translates to their engagement, enthusiasm, and dedication to their work. Nurses who are passionate about their profession are more resilient and better able to manage the emotional labor inherent in nursing [11] Passion drives nurses to continually improve their skills and knowledge, contributing to their employability [18]. When nurses are passionate about their work, they are more likely to engage in lifelong learning and professional development, acting crucial for maintaining resilience and employability [19].

However, passion must be balanced to avoid burnout, making it essential to support nurses in managing their workloads and maintaining a healthy work–life balance [20]. Moreover, passion alone is insufficient for sustaining a professional career. Initially, factors such as salary, job opportunities, and a desire to serve can act as sources of passion. However, these factors may diminish under hardship, potentially leading to leaving the job.

2.2. Intimacy: connection and emotional support

In Sternberg’s theory, intimacy refers to feelings of closeness, connectedness, and bondedness. In the nursing profession, intimacy can be seen as the emotional support and connectedness nurses experience with their colleagues, patients, and the broader healthcare community. This emotional support is crucial in building resilience [21]. Strong interpersonal relationships and a supportive work environment significantly enhance nurses’ ability to cope with stress [22].

The intimacy component can also relate to the empathy and compassion nurses provide and receive [23]. Studies says that women nurses, often engaging in more empathetic interactions, might experience both higher emotional labor and greater emotional support, which can buffer against stress and burnout [21]. Creating a workplace culture that fosters strong connections and emotional support networks can enhance emotional resilience among nurses, promoting both wellbeing and employability [9].

2.3. Commitment: dedication and professional identity

Commitment in Sternberg’s theory pertains to the decision to maintain a long-term relationship. For nurses, commitment reflects their dedication to the profession and their professional identity. Career resilience is strongly linked to a sense of commitment and professional identity, enabling nurses to persevere through challenges and adapt to changes in their work environment [24].

Fostering a sense of autonomy and control in the workplace can strengthen nurses’ commitment to their profession [25]. When nurses feel empowered to make decisions and influence their work environment, their dedication and professional identity are reinforced, enhancing their emotional resilience. Commitment also involves a long-term investment in one’s career, which is essential for employability and professional growth [26].

3. Integrating the triangular theory of love with resilience theory

Resilience theory emphasizes the dynamic interaction between individuals and their environments in fostering resilience [27]. Emotional resilience is a critical component within the broader framework of resilience theory, which explores how individuals, groups, or systems adapt and thrive in the face of adversity [28]. While resilience theory encompasses various dimensions—such as emotional, cognitive, and social factors—emotional resilience specifically refers to the ability to manage and recover from emotional stress, maintain balance, and preserve positive emotions during challenges [27]. It serves as a foundational element, influencing the broader resilience process by enhancing emotional stability and supporting effective coping. Thus, emotional resilience is both an outcome of protective factors and a mediator that shapes overall adaptive capacity, making it an essential part of resilience theory [29].

When linked to Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love—comprising intimacy, passion, and commitment—the interplay becomes clear. Emotional resilience enhances a person’s capacity to navigate relational dynamics by fostering stability and the capacity to maintain intimacy and commitment, even during turbulent times. This resilience, therefore, strengthens the foundational components of love to endure stress, adapt to change, and sustain a balanced relationship, promoting long-term relational health and satisfaction [30]. Consequently, the interplay between emotional resilience and resilience theory not only shapes individual well-being but also directly influences the dynamics of love and long-term relationship stability as described by Sternberg’s model.

This approach enables nurses to cope with the demands of their roles more effectively while simultaneously enhancing their overall well-being and job satisfaction [3]. Creating such an environment requires thoughtful organizational policies, supportive leadership, and a culture that values continuous learning and emotional support [31]. This expanded framework provides a comprehensive approach to understanding and developing resilience in nursing by drawing parallels between the dynamics of love and professional engagement. It underscores the importance of emotional factors in resilience and offers practical insights for enhancing the support systems that sustain nursing professionals in their careers. Figure 1 shows the Integration diagram of Triangular Theory of Love and resilience theory

Figure 1

Integration diagram of Triangular Theory of Love and resilience theory.

Here are seven brief practical applications of integrating the Triangular Theory of Love with resilience theory:

Strengthening emotional support networks (intimacy): Foster a supportive work environment through peer support programs, mentorship, and team-building activities.

Fostering engagement and enthusiasm (passion): Encourage continuous professional development and provide training programs to maintain nurses’ passion for their work.

Promoting professional dedication and identity (commitment): Recognize and reward nurses’ dedication with career advancement opportunities and recognition programs.

Creating supportive leadership and policies (intimacy and commitment): Develop emotionally intelligent leadership and implement policies that promote work–life balance and emotional well-being.

Balancing workload to prevent burnout (passion and intimacy): Ensure manageable workloads with flexible scheduling, adequate staffing, and resources for stress management.

Enhancing collaborative practice and communication (intimacy and commitment): Promote a culture of open communication and collaboration among healthcare teams through regular interdisciplinary meetings and collaborative tools.

Implementing resilience training programs (commitment and passion): Develop and provide resilience training programs that include stress management techniques, mindfulness practices, and coping strategies to support nurses’ well-being.

4. Love as “Caring Maturity” in well-being

The concept of "Caring Maturity" enriches our understanding of love in the professional context of nursing. It involves a conscious focus on nurturing relationships with empathy, responsibility, and ethical considerations, representing an evolved form of love that integrates various human experiences and interactions. This ensures that love in nursing is both profound and practical [32].

Caring maturity significantly impacts the well-being of nurses by fostering a nurturing and supportive professional environment. It blends empathy, ethical responsibility, and proactive engagement, crucial for maintaining emotional resilience [33]. When nurses practice caring maturity, they recognize the inherent worth of their patients and colleagues, creating a culture of mutual respect and appreciation. This recognition enhances their emotional well-being, as feeling valued and respected boosts morale and job satisfaction [34].

Additionally, caring maturity aids nurses in managing their emotions and understanding those of others, essential for dealing with the emotional challenges in nursing. This emotional intelligence allows nurses to provide compassionate care without becoming overwhelmed, maintaining their emotional stability and resilience [22]. It ensures that nurses adhere to ethical standards and make decisions based on moral integrity, fostering professional pride and ethical commitment [35]. Furthermore, caring maturity encourages nurses to engage proactively in patient care and professional development, promoting a sense of purpose and continuous improvement [36].

The ability to deeply understand and share the feelings of others enhances patient-centered care and strengthens interpersonal relationships within the healthcare team [37]. Together, these aspects of caring maturity create a comprehensive framework supporting the well-being of nurses. By integrating these mature forms of love into their practice, nurses can build resilience, manage stress effectively, and maintain a high level of job satisfaction, ultimately leading to a more robust and fulfilling professional life [38].

5. Limitations

High patient volumes and increased workloads can diminish passion for the nursing profession, leading to emotional exhaustion and detachment. Staff shortages and high turnover disrupt the development of intimacy by weakening professional relationships and support systems. Limited resources limit opportunities to foster commitment through career development and emotional support. Furthermore, interprofessional tensions undermine both intimacy and commitment, creating barriers to trust and teamwork. These challenges can be further compounded by individual variables such as gender, age, culture, ethnicity, and religion, which influence how passion, intimacy, and commitment are expressed and sustained. Recognizing these personal differences provides a more nuanced perspective on the impact of the Triangular Theory of Love in diverse healthcare environments and highlights the need for tailored strategies to enhance resilience.

6. Recommendations

To enhance emotional resilience and well-being among nurses, it is recommended that healthcare institutions implement structured peer support programs facilitated by trained professionals, along with regular interdisciplinary team-building activities to strengthen professional relationships. Continuous professional development initiatives, aligned with career advancement goals, combined with structured recognition programs, can further boost engagement and job satisfaction. Additionally, policies promoting work–life balance, such as flexible scheduling, comprehensive mental health resources, and ergonomic safety measures, are essential. However, further research is needed to evaluate the long-term impact of these interventions. Studies should focus on identifying optimal formats and frequencies for peer support and team building, assessing how professional development and recognition influence retention, and examining the effectiveness of work–life balance policies on stress reduction and overall well-being. This research will be crucial to refining these strategies and ensuring their sustainable implementation.

7. Conclusions

This communication highlights a novel research area: the connection between love for one’s professional well-being and resilience, which existing studies have not explored or explained through the Triangular Theory of Love. By applying the Triangular Theory of Love—intimacy, passion, and commitment—we can better understand resilience in nursing. Strengthening emotional support networks (intimacy), fostering engagement (passion), and promoting professional dedication (commitment) are key strategies. Healthcare institutions should establish robust emotional support systems, encourage continuous professional development, and implement policies that promote work–life balance. By fostering strong interpersonal relationships, providing opportunities for lifelong learning, and maintaining a healthy balance between work and personal life, nurses can sustain their passion and resilience. Ultimately, when actions are performed with love, they endure and have a lasting impact, sustaining the benefits of a supportive environment and improving the quality of professional practice over time.

Funding

The authors declare no financial support for the commentary, authorship or publication of this article.

Author contributions

All authors contributed significantly to the commentary G.V.J.: conceptualization and writing, A.J.N.: review, supervision and editing.
