Now<MH6258>, therefore, please<MH4994> let your servants<MH5650> live<MH3427> in the land<MH776> of Goshen<MH1657>.” <a href="/genesis/47-5.htm">5</a>Then Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559> to <a href="#fn">[a]</a>Joseph<MH3130>, “Your father<MH1> and your brothers<MH251> have come<MH935> to you. <a href="/genesis/47-6.htm">6</a>The land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> is <a href="#fn">[b]</a>at your disposal<MH6440>; settle<MH3427> your father<MH1> and your brothers<MH251> in the best<MH4315> of the land<MH776>, let them live<MH3427> in the land<MH776> of Goshen<MH1657>; and if<MH518> you know<MH3045> any<MH3426> capable<MH2428> men<MH376> among them, then <a href="#fn">[c]</a>put<MH7760> them in<MH8269> charge<MH8269> of my livestock<MH4735>.” <a href="/genesis/47-7.htm">7</a>Then Joseph<MH3130> brought<MH935> his father<MH1> Jacob<MH3290> and <a href="#fn">[d]</a>presented<MH5975, 6440> him to Pharaoh<MH6547>; and Jacob<MH3290> blessed<MH1288> Pharaoh<MH6547>. <a href="/genesis/47-8.htm">8</a>And Pharaoh<MH6547> said<MH559> to Jacob<MH3290>, “How<MH4100> many<MH4100> <a href="#fn">[e]</a>years<MH8141> have you lived<MH2425b>?” <a href="/genesis/47-9.htm">9</a>So Jacob<MH3290> said<MH559> to Pharaoh<MH6547>, “The <a href="#fn">[f]</a>years<MH8141> of my living<MH4033> abroad<MH4033> are <a href="#fn">[g]</a>130<MH3967, 7970>; few<MH4592> and <a href="#fn">[h]</a>unpleasant<MH7451a> have been<MH1961> the <a href="#fn">[i]</a>years<MH8141> of my life<MH2425b>, nor<MH3808> have they <a href="#fn">[j]</a>attained<MH5381> the <a href="#fn">[k]</a>years<MH8141> <a href="#fn">[l]</a>that my fathers<MH1> lived<MH2425b> during the days<MH3117> of their living<MH4033> abroad<MH4033>.” <a href="/genesis/47-10.htm">10</a>So Jacob<MH3290> blessed<MH1288> Pharaoh<MH6547>, and went<MH3318> out<MH3318> from <a href="#fn">[m]</a>his presence<MH6440>. <a href="/genesis/47-11.htm">11</a>Now Joseph<MH3130> settled<MH3427> his father<MH1> and his brothers<MH251> and gave<MH5414> them property<MH272> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, in the best<MH4315> of the land<MH776>, in the land<MH776> of Rameses<MH7486>, as Pharaoh<MH6547> had ordered<MH6680>. <a href="/genesis/47-12.htm">12</a>Joseph<MH3130> also provided<MH3557> his father<MH1> and his brothers<MH251> and all<MH3605> his father’s<MH1> household<MH1004> with <a href="#fn">[n]</a>food<MH3899>, according to the <a href="#fn">[o]</a>number<MH6310> of their little<MH2945> ones<MH2945>. <a href="/genesis/47-13.htm">13</a>Now there<MH369> was<MH369> no<MH369> <a href="#fn">[p]</a>food<MH3899> in all<MH3605> the land<MH776>, because<MH3588> the famine<MH7458> was very<MH3966> severe<MH3515>, so that the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> and the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a> languished<MH3856> because<MH4480, 6440> of the famine<MH7458>. <a href="/genesis/47-14.htm">14</a>And Joseph<MH3130> collected<MH3950> all<MH3605> the money<MH3701> that was found<MH4672> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> and in the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a> in payment for the grain<MH7668> which<MH834> they bought<MH7666>, and Joseph<MH3130> brought<MH935> the money<MH3701> into Pharaoh’s<MH6547> house<MH1004>. <a href="/genesis/47-15.htm">15</a>When the money<MH3701> was<MH8552> all<MH8552> spent<MH8552> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> and in the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>, all<MH3605> the Egyptians<MH4714> came<MH935> to Joseph<MH3130> saying<MH559>, “Give<MH3051> us <a href="#fn">[q]</a>food<MH3899>, for why<MH4100> should we die<MH4191> in your presence<MH5048>? For our money<MH3701> is<MH656> <a href="#fn">[r]</a>gone<MH656>.” <a href="/genesis/47-16.htm">16</a>Then Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559>, “Give<MH3051> up your livestock<MH4735>, and I will give<MH5414> you food for your livestock<MH4735>, since<MH518> your money<MH3701> is<MH656> <a href="#fn">[s]</a>gone<MH656>.” <a href="/genesis/47-17.htm">17</a>So they brought<MH935> their livestock<MH4735> to Joseph<MH3130>, and Joseph<MH3130> gave<MH5414> them <a href="#fn">[t]</a>food<MH3899> in exchange for the horses<MH5483b> and the <a href="#fn">[u]</a>flocks<MH6629> and the herds<MH1241> and the donkeys<MH2543>; and he <a href="#fn">[v]</a>fed<MH5095> them with <a href="#fn">[w]</a>food<MH3899> in exchange for all<MH3605> their livestock<MH4735> <a href="#fn">[x]</a>that year<MH8141>. <a href="/genesis/47-18.htm">18</a>But when that year<MH8141> ended<MH8552>, they came<MH935> to him the <a href="#fn">[y]</a>next<MH8145> year<MH8141> and said<MH559> to him, “We will not hide<MH3582> from my lord<MH113> the fact<MH3588> that our money<MH3701> is<MH8552> all<MH8552> spent<MH8552>, and the <a href="#fn">[z]</a>livestock<MH4735, 929> are my lord’s<MH113>. There is nothing<MH3808> left<MH7604> <a href="#fn">[aa]</a>for my lord<MH113> except<MH1115, 518> our bodies<MH1472a> and our lands<MH127>. <a href="/genesis/47-19.htm">19</a>Why<MH4100> should we die<MH4191> before your eyes<MH5869>, both<MH1571> we and our land<MH127>? Buy<MH7069> us and our land<MH127> for <a href="#fn">[ab]</a>food<MH3899>, and we and our land<MH127> will be slaves<MH5650> to Pharaoh<MH6547>. So give<MH5414> us seed<MH2233>, so that we may live<MH2421a> and not die<MH4191>, and that the land<MH127> may not be desolate<MH3456>.” Result of the Famine<a href="/genesis/47-20.htm">20</a>So Joseph<MH3130> bought<MH7069> all<MH3605> the land<MH127> of Egypt<MH4714> for Pharaoh<MH6547>, for <a href="#fn">[ac]</a>every<MH376> Egyptian<MH4714> sold<MH4376> his field<MH7704>, because<MH3588> the famine<MH7458> was severe<MH2388> upon them. So the land<MH776> became<MH1961> Pharaoh’s<MH6547>. <a href="/genesis/47-21.htm">21</a>As for the people<MH5971a>, he relocated<MH5674a> them to the cities<MH5892b> from one end<MH7097a> of Egypt’s<MH4714> border<MH1366> to the other<MH7097a>. <a href="/genesis/47-22.htm">22</a>Only<MH7534b> the land<MH127> of the priests<MH3548> he did not buy<MH7069>, because<MH3588> the priests<MH3548> had an allotment<MH2706> from Pharaoh<MH6547>, and they <a href="#fn">[ad]</a>lived<MH398> off<MH398> the allotment<MH2706> which<MH834> Pharaoh<MH6547> gave<MH5414> them. Therefore<MH5921, 3651>, they did not sell<MH4376> their land<MH127>. <a href="/genesis/47-23.htm">23</a>Then Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559> to the people<MH5971a>, “Behold<MH2005>, today<MH3117> I have purchased<MH7069> you and your land<MH127> for Pharaoh<MH6547>; now<MH1887>, here is seed<MH2233> for you, and you may sow<MH2232> the land<MH127>. <a href="/genesis/47-24.htm">24</a><a href="#fn">[ae]</a>At the harvest<MH8393> you shall give<MH5414> a fifth<MH2549> to Pharaoh<MH6547>, and <a href="#fn">[af]</a>four-fifths<MH702, 3027> shall be your own for seed<MH2233> of the field<MH7704> and for your food<MH400>, and for those of your households<MH1004> and as food<MH398> for your little<MH2945> ones<MH2945>.” <a href="/genesis/47-25.htm">25</a>So they said<MH559>, “You have saved<MH2421a> our lives<MH2421a>! Let us find<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in the sight<MH5869> of my lord<MH113>, and we will be Pharaoh’s<MH6547> slaves<MH5650>.” <a href="/genesis/47-26.htm">26</a>Joseph<MH3130> made<MH7760> it a statute<MH2706> concerning<MH5921> the land<MH127> of Egypt<MH4714>, valid to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>, that Pharaoh<MH6547> was to have the fifth<MH2569>; only<MH7534b> the land<MH127> of the priests<MH3548> <a href="#fn">[ag]</a>did not become<MH1961> Pharaoh’s<MH6547>. <a href="/genesis/47-27.htm">27</a>Now Israel<MH3478> lived<MH3427> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, in <a href="#fn">[ah]</a>Goshen<MH1657>, and they acquired<MH270> property<MH270> in it and were<MH6509> fruitful<MH6509> and became<MH7235a> very<MH3966> numerous<MH7235a>. <a href="/genesis/47-28.htm">28</a>And Jacob<MH3290> lived<MH2421a> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> for seventeen<MH7651, 6240> years<MH8141>; so the <a href="#fn">[ai]</a>length<MH3117> of Jacob’s<MH3290> life<MH2425b> was 147<MH3967, 705, 7651> years<MH8141>. <a href="/genesis/47-29.htm">29</a>When <a href="#fn">[aj]</a>the time<MH3117> for Israel<MH3478> to die<MH4191> drew<MH7126> near<MH7126>, he called<MH7121> his son<MH1121> Joseph<MH3130> and said<MH559> to him, “Please<MH4994>, if<MH518> I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in your sight<MH5869>, place<MH7760> your hand<MH3027> under<MH8478> my thigh<MH3409> now<MH4994> and deal<MH6213a> with me in kindness<MH2617a> and <a href="#fn">[ak]</a>faithfulness<MH571>: please<MH4994> do not bury<MH6912> me in Egypt<MH4714>, <a href="/genesis/47-30.htm">30</a>but when I <a href="#fn">[al]</a>lie<MH7901> down<MH7901> with my fathers<MH1>, you shall carry<MH5375> me out of Egypt<MH4714> and bury<MH6912> me in their burial<MH6900> place<MH6900>.” And he said<MH559>, “I will do<MH6213a> as you have said<MH1697>.” <a href="/genesis/47-31.htm">31</a>And he said<MH559>, “Swear<MH7650> to me.” So he swore<MH7650> to him.
