Caledonia, with a digital integrator. The cruises lasting two weeks were done at six month interval. Much information has been obtained on stock biomass and spatial distribution of fish and schools. Fish are dispersed at night and stay near the surface. During the day they form schools, usually of very small size. Some species are found mostly along the coasts, on the reef flats and far inside in the bays. divers in open water, 20-35 m deep, in the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon at three sites &gt; 1 km from the reefs of Lizard Island. Observations in situ on 111 individuals of 11 families, but primarily Apogonidae, Chaetodontidae and Pomacentridae, constitute the first data of their kind. Most fish showed no overt reaction to the divers. Some individuals of some taxa of three families settled quickly to the bottom. Acceptable observations on swimming were made on 66 larvae. Individuals selected a wide range of depths, but when grouped by family, mean depths chosen by individuals were: apogonids, 6.5 (� 1.5, 95% CI) m; pomacentrids, 7.7 (� 1.5) m; and chaetodontids, 9.3 (� 1.3) m. reefs have revealed surprisingly large populations of large reef fish. Locations such as the northwestern Hawaiian Islands, northern Marianas Islands, Line Islands, U.S. remote Pacific Islands, Cocos-Keeling Atoll and Chagos archipelago have much higher reef fish biomass than islands and reefs near people. Much of the high biomass of most remote reef fish communities lies in the largest species, such as sharks, bumphead parrots, giant trevally, and humphead wrasse. Some, such as sharks and giant trevally, are apex predators, but others such as bumphead parrots and humphead wrasse, are not. At many locations, decreases in large reef fish species have been attributed to fishing. Fishing is well known to remove the largest fish first, and a quantitative measure of vulnerability to fishing indicates that large reef fish species are much more vulnerable to fishing than small fish. Such a steep gradient facilitates the identification of patterns of variation in species abundance and diversity along depth. To document such patterns in fishes associated with this habitat, 30 visual censuses were conducted along 30 x 2 m transects, located at 5 m intervals between 5-30 m depth, in which the abundance and diversity of species was estimated. A total of 2916 individuals belonging to 46 species from 21 families were recorded within transects. Ten additional species were observed outside of transects for a total richness of 56 species. The dominant species were Canthigaster rostrata, Chromis cyanea, Stegastes partitus, Thalassoma bifasciatum and Clepticus parrae, which together with four other species accounted for 92% of the total abundance. Several of these dominant species are planktivorous and abundant throughout the Caribbean and had broad ranges of vertical distribution with abundance peaks in different parts of the depth gradient. In general, there was a positive correlation between average abundance and breadth of depth distribution. Non-metric Multi-Dimensional Scaling analysis revealed distinct assemblages at each depth, which also differed significantly, but weakly, in their diversity and dominance, but not in their species richness and evenness. Shallow assemblages were clearly distinctive from deep ones, with greater differentiation between shallower than between deeper assemblages.
