It is a central theme in Jesus' teachings, emphasizing God's dominion over all creation. In the Gospels, Jesus often speaks of the kingdom as both "at hand" (Mark 1:15) and as something to be fully realized in the future (Matthew 25:34). The kingdom is not confined to geographical boundaries but is a spiritual realm where God's will is fulfilled.
is not a matter of eating and drinking
This phrase addresses the disputes in the early church regarding dietary laws and practices, particularly between Jewish and Gentile believers. In the context of Romans 14, Paul is urging believers to move beyond legalistic concerns about food and drink, which were significant issues due to Jewish dietary laws (Leviticus 11) and the consumption of food offered to idols (1 Corinthians 8:4-13). The focus is on the internal and spiritual aspects of faith rather than external rituals.
but of righteousness
Righteousness here refers to the state of being right with God, which is achieved through faith in Jesus Christ (Romans 3:22). It is a key theme in Paul's writings, emphasizing that righteousness is not earned by works but is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). This righteousness leads to a transformed life that reflects God's character and moral standards.
peace
Peace in this context is both the peace with God that comes through reconciliation by Christ's sacrifice (Romans 5:1) and the peace among believers. It is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and a hallmark of the Christian community. The early church, composed of diverse backgrounds, was called to live in harmony, reflecting the peace of Christ (Colossians 3:15).
and joy
Joy is a deep-seated sense of well-being and contentment that comes from knowing and trusting God. It is not dependent on circumstances but is a result of the Holy Spirit's work in a believer's life (Philippians 4:4). Joy is also a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and is often associated with salvation and the presence of God (Psalm 16:11).
in the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the source and sustainer of the kingdom's attributes—righteousness, peace, and joy. The Spirit empowers believers to live out these qualities (Acts 1:8) and is the guarantee of our inheritance in the kingdom (Ephesians 1:13-14). The presence of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life is evidence of belonging to the kingdom of God (Romans 8:9).
Persons / Places / Events
1. Paul the Apostle
The author of the Book of Romans, Paul was a key figure in the early Christian church, known for his missionary journeys and theological teachings.

2. The Roman Church
The recipients of the letter, the Roman Christians were a diverse group of Jewish and Gentile believers living in the heart of the Roman Empire.

3. The Kingdom of God
A central theme in Jesus' teachings, representing God's sovereign rule and the spiritual realm where His will is fulfilled.

4. The Holy Spirit
The third person of the Trinity, who empowers believers to live in righteousness, peace, and joy.

5. Dietary Laws and Customs
The context of Romans 14 involves disputes over dietary practices, particularly between Jewish and Gentile Christians.
Teaching Points
Spiritual Priorities Over Physical Concerns
The kingdom of God transcends earthly matters like food and drink, focusing instead on spiritual virtues.

Righteousness in the Holy Spirit
True righteousness is not self-derived but comes through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Peace as a Marker of God's Kingdom
Believers are called to live in peace, reflecting the harmony of God's kingdom in their relationships.

Joy as a Fruit of the Spirit
Joy is a supernatural result of living in alignment with God's will and presence.

Unity in Diversity
The Roman church's context of diverse backgrounds calls for unity in the essentials of faith, rather than division over non-essentials.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Romans 14

What defines religious addiction?

What does "kingdom of God" mean beyond eating and drinking?

What does 'kingdom of God' mean beyond eating and drinking?

What is the joy of the Holy Spirit?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(17) Meat and drink.--Strictly, eating and drinking.
Righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.--By "righteousness and peace" is not here meant imputed righteousness, or justification and reconciliation with God, but rather the moral condition of righteousness in the Christian himself, and concord with his fellow-men. These are crowned in the confirmed Christian by that feeling of subdued and chastened exultation which is wrought in Him by the presence in his heart or constant influence of the Holy Spirit.
It is remarkable how, with all the wide difference in terminology between the writings of St. Paul and the Gospels, they yet come round to the very same point. The "kingdom of God," as here described, is exactly what we should gather from the fuller and more detailed sayings of our Lord. "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man;" "The kingdom of God is within you;" "The kingdom of God cometh not with observation;" "If thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light;" "Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness;" "Blessed are the peacemakers;" "Rejoice and be exceeding glad."
It has not been beyond the power of heathen or even Christian philosophers, such, e.g., as Marcus Aurelius, to arrive at the conception of righteousness and peaceableness as duties to be observed and striven after. The peculiarity of Christianity consists in the unity which it gives to these attributes as naturally flowing from a spring of deep religious emotion, and from the finish and perfection which it adds to them by the introduction of that third term, "joy in the Holy Ghost." Many individuals have shown, and still show, with greater or less approximation, what the Christian type should be, but the great and only perfect Exemplar is Jesus Himself, and that less, perhaps, in the later portion of His career, when He was fulfilling that other side of His mission, to "bear the sins of many" as the Saviour of mankind, than in the earlier untroubled phase which finds expression in the Sermon on the Mount. This is in closest contact with the normal life of men.

Pulpit Commentary
Verses 17, 18. - For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.
