This practice is rooted in the Old Testament, where confession was often accompanied by repentance and sacrifice (Leviticus 5:5-6). The act of confession is not merely verbal but involves a heartfelt recognition of one's wrongdoing and a turning away from sin. In the New Testament, confession is linked to the forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ (James 5:16). The Greek word for "confess" (homologeo) implies agreement with God about the nature of sin, emphasizing the importance of honesty and humility in the believer's relationship with God.
He is faithful and just
God's faithfulness is a recurring theme throughout Scripture, highlighting His unwavering commitment to His promises (Deuteronomy 7:9; 1 Corinthians 1:9). His justice ensures that He acts in accordance with His righteous nature. The combination of faithfulness and justice assures believers that God will respond to confession with forgiveness, as He has promised through the covenant established by Jesus' sacrifice (Hebrews 10:23). This phrase underscores God's reliability and moral integrity, assuring believers that He will not overlook sin but will address it in a manner consistent with His character.
to forgive us our sins
Forgiveness is a central tenet of the Christian faith, made possible through the atoning work of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:7). In the Old Testament, forgiveness was often associated with the sacrificial system, which foreshadowed Christ's ultimate sacrifice (Leviticus 16:30). The New Testament reveals that through Jesus' death and resurrection, believers receive complete forgiveness, liberating them from the penalty of sin (Colossians 2:13-14). This forgiveness restores the believer's relationship with God, allowing for spiritual renewal and growth.
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness
Cleansing from unrighteousness goes beyond forgiveness, involving a purification process that transforms the believer's life. This concept is rooted in the purification rituals of the Old Testament (Psalm 51:7) and is fulfilled in Christ, who purifies believers through His blood (Hebrews 9:14). The cleansing process is ongoing, as believers are continually sanctified by the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23). This phrase emphasizes the comprehensive nature of God's redemptive work, which not only forgives but also purifies, enabling believers to live in righteousness and holiness.
Persons / Places / Events
1. John the Apostle
The author of 1 John, one of Jesus' original twelve disciples, known for his close relationship with Christ and his emphasis on love and truth.

2. The Early Church
The audience of this letter, consisting of early Christians who were facing false teachings and needed reassurance of their faith.

3. Confession
The act of acknowledging one's sins before God, which is central to the verse and the process of receiving forgiveness.

4. God's Faithfulness and Justice
Attributes of God highlighted in this verse, emphasizing His reliability and fairness in forgiving sins.

5. Forgiveness and Cleansing
The divine actions promised to believers who confess, signifying both the removal of guilt and the purification from sin.
Teaching Points
The Importance of Confession
Confession is not just a ritual but a heartfelt acknowledgment of our sins before God. Not the exact opposite, "if we confess that we have sin;" but "if we confess our sins." It is easy to say, "I am a sinner;" but if confession is to have value it must state the definite acts of sin. The context ("deceive ourselves... he is faithful") shows that confession at the bar of the conscience and of God is meant. Circumstances must decide whether confession to man is required also, and this St. John neither forbids nor enjoins. Note the asyndeton; there is no δέ, as in verse 7. He is faithful and righteous, Δίκαιος must be rendered "righteous" rather than "just," to mark the contrast with unrighteousness ἀδικίτι, and the connexion with "Jesus Christ the Righteous" (1 John 2:1). To forgive... to cleanse. As explained in verse 7, the one refers to freeing us from the penalties of sin, justification; the other to freeing us from its contamination, sanctification. The sense of purpose is not wholly to be surrendered. No doubt ἵνα, like other particles, becomes weakened in later Greek; but even in later classical Greek the notion of purpose is mixed up with that of consequence. Much more is this the case in the New Testament, and especially in St. John, where what seems to us to be mere result is really design; and this higher aspect of the sequence of facts is indicated by ἵνα.
