Are they going to restore<MH5800b> <i>the temple</i> for themselves? Can they offer<MH2076> sacrifices<MH2076>? Can they finish<MH3615> <i>it</i> in a day<MH3117>? Can they revive<MH2421a> the stones<MH68> from the heaps<MH6194> of rubble<MH6083>, even the burned<MH8313> ones?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now Tobiah<MH2900> the Ammonite<MH5984> <i>was</i> near<MH681a> him, and he said<MH559>, “Even<MH1571> what<MH834> they are building<MH1129>—if<MH518> a fox<MH7776> were to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>jump<MH5927> <i>on it,</i> it would break<MH6555> their stone<MH68> wall<MH2346> down<MH6555>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Hear<MH8085>, O our God<MH430>, how<MH3588> we are <i>an object of</i> contempt<MH939>! Return<MH7725> their taunting<MH2781> on their own heads<MH7218>, and turn<MH5414> them into plunder<MH961> in a land<MH776> of captivity<MH7633>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>forgive<MH3680> their guilt<MH5771> and do not let their sin<MH2403b> be wiped<MH4229a> out<MH4229a> before<MH4480, 6440> You, for they have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>demoralized<MH3707, 5048> the builders<MH1129>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So we built<MH1129> the wall<MH2346>, and the entire<MH3605> wall<MH2346> was joined<MH7194> together<MH7194> to half<MH2677> its <i>height,</i> for the people<MH5971a> had<MH1961> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>mind<MH3820> to work<MH6213a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Now when<MH3512c> Sanballat<MH5571>, Tobiah<MH2900>, the Arabs<MH6163a>, the Ammonites<MH5984>, and the Ashdodites<MH796> heard<MH8085> that the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>repair<MH724> of the walls<MH2346> of Jerusalem<MH3389> went<MH5927> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>on, <i>and</i> that the breaches<MH6555> began<MH2490c> to be<MH5640> closed<MH5640>, they were<MH2734> very<MH3966> angry<MH2734>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> of them conspired<MH7194> together<MH3164a> to come<MH935> to fight<MH3898a> against Jerusalem<MH3389> and to cause<MH6213a> confusion<MH8442> in it. <p class="hdg">Discouragement Overcome</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>But we prayed<MH6419> to our God<MH430>, and because<MH5921> of them we set<MH5975> up a guard<MH4929> against<MH5921> them day<MH3119> and night<MH3915>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And so <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>in Judah<MH3063> it was said<MH559>: <p class="indent1stline">“The strength<MH3581b> of the burden<MH5449> bearers<MH5449> is failing<MH3782>, <t><p class="indent1">Yet there is much<MH7235a> rubble<MH6083>; <t><p class="indent1">And we ourselves<MH587> are<MH3201> unable<MH3808, 3201> <t><p class="indent1">To rebuild<MH1129> the wall<MH2346>.” <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And our enemies<MH6862c> said<MH559>, “They will not know<MH3045> or see<MH7200> until<MH5704, 834> we come<MH935> among<MH413, 8432> them, kill<MH2026> them, and put<MH7673a> a<MH7673a> stop<MH7673a> to<MH7673a> the work<MH4399>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>When<MH3512c> the Jews<MH3064> who lived<MH3427> near<MH681a> them came<MH935> and told<MH559> us ten<MH6235> times<MH6471>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>They will come up against<MH5921> us from every<MH3605> place<MH4725> where<MH834> you may turn<MH7725>,” <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>then I stationed<MH5975> <i>men</i> in the lowest<MH8482> parts<MH8482> of the space<MH4725> behind<MH310> the wall<MH2346>, the exposed<MH6706> places<MH6706>, and I stationed<MH5975> the people<MH5971a> in families<MH4940> with their swords<MH2719>, spears<MH7420>, and bows<MH7198>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>When I saw<MH7200> <i>their fear,</i> I stood<MH6965> and said<MH559> to the nobles<MH2715>, the officials<MH5461>, and the rest<MH3499a> of the people<MH5971a>: “Do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> of them; remember<MH2142> the Lord<MH136> who is great<MH1419> and awesome<MH3372a>, and fight<MH3898a> for your brothers<MH251>, your sons<MH1121>, your daughters<MH1323>, your wives<MH802>, and your houses<MH1004>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now when<MH3512c> our enemies<MH340> heard<MH8085> that it was known<MH3045> to us, and that God<MH430> had frustrated<MH6565a> their plan<MH6098>, then all<MH3605> of us returned<MH7725> to the wall<MH2346>, each<MH376> one<MH376> to his work<MH4399>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And from that day<MH3117> <i>on,</i> half<MH2677> of my servants<MH5288> carried<MH6213a> on the work<MH4399> while half<MH2677> of them kept hold<MH2388> of the spears<MH7420>, the shields<MH4043>, the bows<MH7198>, and the coats<MH8302> of<MH8302> mail<MH8302>; and the captains<MH8269> <i>were</i> behind<MH310> all<MH3605> the house<MH1004> of Judah<MH3063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Those who were rebuilding<MH1129> the wall<MH2346> and those who carried<MH5375> burdens<MH5447> carried<MH6006> with one<MH259> hand<MH3027> doing<MH6213a> the work<MH4399>, and the other<MH259> keeping hold<MH2388> of a weapon<MH7973>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>As for the builders<MH1129>, each<MH376> <i>wore</i> his sword<MH2719> strapped<MH631> to his waist<MH4975> as he built<MH1129>, while <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>the trumpeter<MH8628, 7782> <i>stood</i> near<MH681a> me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And I said<MH559> to the nobles<MH2715>, the officials<MH5461>, and the rest<MH3499a> of the people<MH5971a>, “The work<MH4399> is great<MH7235a> and extensive<MH7342>, and we are separated<MH6504> on the wall<MH2346> far<MH7350> from one<MH376> another<MH251>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>At whatever<MH834> place<MH4725> you hear<MH8085> the sound<MH6963> of the trumpet<MH7782>, assemble<MH6908> to us there<MH8033>.
