and I asked<MH7592> them about<MH5921> the Jews<MH3064> who had escaped<MH6413> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>and had survived<MH7604> the captivity<MH7628b>, and about<MH5921> Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And they said<MH559> to me, “The remnant<MH7604> there<MH8033> in the province<MH4082> who<MH834> survived<MH7604> the captivity<MH7628b> are in great<MH1419> distress<MH7463a> and disgrace<MH2781>, and the wall<MH2346> of Jerusalem<MH3389> is broken<MH6555> down<MH6555> and its gates<MH8179> have been burned<MH3341> with fire<MH784>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now when I heard<MH8085> these<MH428> words<MH1697>, I sat<MH3427> down<MH3427> and wept<MH1058> and mourned<MH56> for days<MH3117>; I and my father’s<MH1> house<MH1004> have sinned<MH2398>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>We have acted<MH2254b> very<MH2254b> corruptly<MH2254b> against You and have not kept<MH8104> the commandments<MH4687>, nor<MH3808> the statutes<MH2706>, nor<MH3808> the ordinances<MH4941> which<MH834> You commanded<MH6680> Your servant<MH5650> Moses<MH4872>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Remember<MH2142>, please<MH4994>, the word<MH1697> which<MH834> You commanded<MH6680> Your servant<MH5650> Moses<MH4872>, saying<MH559>, ‘<i>If</i> you are<MH4603> unfaithful<MH4603>, I will scatter<MH6327a> you among the peoples<MH5971a>;
