The act of bringing both the donkey and the colt highlights the precision with which Jesus fulfills Old Testament prophecy. In the cultural context of the time, a donkey was a symbol of peace, as opposed to a horse, which was associated with war. This choice of animal underscores Jesus' role as the Prince of Peace.
and laid their cloaks on them
Laying cloaks on the animals served as a makeshift saddle and was a gesture of honor and respect. In 2 Kings 9:13, cloaks were spread under Jehu as a sign of his recognition as king. This act by the disciples and the crowd signifies their acknowledgment of Jesus' royal status, even if they did not fully understand the nature of His kingship. It also reflects the cultural practice of showing reverence to someone of high status.
and Jesus sat on them
The phrase "sat on them" refers to Jesus sitting on the cloaks placed on the donkey and the colt, not on both animals simultaneously. This action is significant as it marks Jesus' public declaration of His messianic identity. By choosing to enter Jerusalem in this manner, Jesus aligns Himself with the messianic expectations of the Jewish people, while also redefining those expectations through His humble approach. This event, known as the Triumphal Entry, is a pivotal moment in the Gospels, as it sets the stage for the events of Holy Week, leading to His crucifixion and resurrection.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus
Central figure in the passage, fulfilling prophecy as the Messiah entering Jerusalem.

2. Disciples
Followers of Jesus who obey His instructions to bring the donkey and colt.

3. Donkey and Colt
Animals used in Jesus' triumphal entry, symbolizing peace and humility.

4. Jerusalem
The city where Jesus makes His triumphal entry, significant in Jewish history and prophecy.

5. Cloaks
Garments laid on the animals, symbolizing honor and submission to Jesus as King.
Teaching Points
Fulfillment of Prophecy
Jesus' entry into Jerusalem on a donkey fulfills Zechariah's prophecy, affirming His identity as the promised Messiah.

Symbol of Peace
Unlike a warrior king on a horse, Jesus rides a donkey, symbolizing His mission of peace and humility.

Obedience and Honor
The disciples' obedience in fetching the donkey and the people's act of laying cloaks demonstrate submission and honor to Jesus.

Recognition of Kingship
The actions of the crowd reflect their acknowledgment of Jesus' authority and kingship, challenging us to recognize His lordship in our lives.

Humility in Leadership
Jesus' choice of a donkey over a horse teaches us about leading with humility and serving others.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Matthew 21

What is the significance of the Triumphal Entry?

What is the significance of Palm Sunday?

How does Matthew 21:4–7 reconcile Jesus riding both a donkey and a colt, unlike the single animal mentioned in other Gospels?

How many animals did Jesus ride into Jerusalem? Some have taken the pronoun αὐτῶν to refer to the beasts, and Alford supports the opinion by the common saying, "The postilion rode on the horses," when, in fact, he rode only one of the pair. But the analogy is erroneous. The postilion really guides and controls both; but no one contends that Christ kept the mother ass in hand while mounted on the colt. The pronoun is more suitably referred to the garments, which formed a saddle for the Saviour, or housings and ornamental appendages (comp. 2 Kings 9:13). He came invested with a certain dignity and pomp, yet in such humble guise as to discountenance all idea of temporal sovereignty.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
They brought
ἤγαγον (ēgagon)
Verb - Aorist Indicative Active - 3rd Person Plural
Strong's 71: A primary verb; properly, to lead; by implication, to bring, drive, go, pass, or induce.

the
τὴν (tēn)
Article - Accusative Feminine Singular
Strong's 3588: The, the definite article.
