Gesicki</a></td> </tr> <tr> </table> </td></tr> </table> <strong>Name:<br> </strong> Gesicki, John Raymond <br> <br> <strong>Author:</strong><br> Bill Hart<br> <br> <strong>Background:</strong><br> <p class=""""MsoNormal""""><span>John Gesicki was born in <st1:place w:st=""""on""""><st1:city w:st=""""on"""">Poniatowski</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=""""on"""">Wisconsin</st1:state></st1:place> on May 10, 1922, the son of John and Frances (Murkowski) Gesicki.<span>  </span>He served in World War II in <st1:country-region w:st=""""on"""">Italy</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st=""""on"""">France</st1:country-region> and <st1:country-region w:st=""""on""""><st1:place w:st=""""on"""">Germany</st1:place></st1:country-region>, receiving the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.<span>  </span>He was an Honorary Pallbearer at the funeral for General George Patton.<o:p></o:p></span></p><br> <br> <strong>Accomplishments:</strong> <p class=""""MsoNormal""""><span>John Gesicki owned and operated Gesicki’s Store and Tavern and <st1:place w:st=""""on""""><st1:placename w:st=""""on"""">Moonlight</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=""""on"""">Gardens</st1:placetype></st1:place> in Poniatowski for over 50 years.<span>  </span>His greatest claim to fame was that he discovered the geological 45 x 90 latitude and longitude mark, which is the exact center of the northern half of the western hemisphere.<span>  </span>In 1969 <st1:place w:st=""""on""""><st1:placename w:st=""""on"""">Marathon</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=""""on"""">County</st1:placetype></st1:place> erected a marker and made the area a county park, the smallest in the state.<span>  </span>Mr. Gesicki then started the 45 x 90 Club which gathered thousands of visitors signatures from around the world, thus enabling Poniatowski to be put on the official state map.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=""""MsoNormal""""><span>John Gesicki was a former treasurer of the town of <st1:city w:st=""""on""""><st1:place w:st=""""on"""">Rietbrock</st1:place></st1:city>.<span>  </span>He was elected a member of the Marathon County Board in 1966, was chosen as vice chairman of the county board in 1973 and became chairman of the board in 1974-1975.<span>  </span>An avid and enthusiastic supporter of good health services for the community, Mr. Gesicki was a member of the Health and Welfare Committee.<span>  </span>He was a member of the board of directors of Wausau Hospital, Inc., chairman of the Marathon County Health and Resources Committee.<span>  </span>In 1969 he served on the Health and Social Services Committee becoming chairman of the executive committee in 1971.<span>  </span>He served on the Marathon County Social Services Board and in 1973 became chairman of the Social Services Board and Outdoor Relief Committee.<span>  </span><o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=""""MsoNormal""""><span>In 1974 Mr. Gesicki was instrumental in the planning and construction of the Marathon County Health Care Center.<span>  </span>He was a member of the Wisconsin Health Policy and Planning Council, the Marathon County Economic Development Council, and chairman of the Marathon Counties Wisconsin Towns Association.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=""""MsoNormal""""><span>On October 12, 1946 John Gesicki was united in marriage at Poniatowski to Loretta Marth.<span>  </span>In their marriage they were blessed with three children.<span>  </span>Mr. Gesicki was an active member of the Polish National Alliance and the American Legion Post in Edgar.<o:p></o:p></span></p> <p class=""""MsoNormal""""><span>John Gesicki died at Kennedy Park Rehabilitation and <st1:placename w:st=""""on"""">Medical</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=""""on"""">Center</st1:placetype> on <st1:place w:st=""""on""""><st1:city w:st=""""on"""">Schofield</st1:city>, <st1:state w:st=""""on"""">WI</st1:state></st1:place> on May 12, 1995.<span>  </span>He is buried in <st1:placename w:st=""""on"""">Holy</st1:placename> <st1:placename w:st=""""on"""">Family</st1:placename> <st1:placetype w:st=""""on"""">Cemetery</st1:placetype> in the town of Rietbrock<st1:place w:st=""""on"""">, <st1:state w:st=""""on"""">WI</st1:state></st1:place>.<o:p></o:p></span></p><br> <br> <strong>Occupation:</strong><br> Health Services Proponent -
