and his mother&#8217;s<MH517> name<MH8034> <i>was</i> Zibiah<MH6645> from Beersheba<MH884>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Joash<MH3060> did<MH6213a> what was right<MH3477> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068> all<MH3605> the days<MH3117> of Jehoiada<MH3077> the priest<MH3548>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Jehoiada<MH3077> took<MH5375> two<MH8147> wives<MH802> for him, and he fathered<MH3205> sons<MH1121> and daughters<MH1323>. <p class="hdg">Faithless Priests</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> after<MH310> this<MH3651> that Joash<MH3060> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>decided<MH1961, 5973, 3820> to restore<MH2318> the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>He gathered<MH6908> the priests<MH3548> and Levites<MH3881> and said<MH559> to them, &#8220;Go<MH3318> out<MH3318> to the cities<MH5892b> of Judah<MH3063> and collect<MH6908> money<MH3701> from all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>repair<MH2388> the house<MH1004> of your God<MH430> annually<MH1767, 8141>, and you shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>do<MH4116> the work<MH1697> quickly<MH4116>.&#8221; But the Levites<MH3881> did not act<MH4116> quickly<MH4116>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> summoned<MH7121> Jehoiada<MH3077>, the chief<MH7218> <i>priest,</i> and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Why<MH4069> have you not required<MH1875> the Levites<MH3881> to bring<MH935> in<MH935> from Judah<MH3063> and from Jerusalem<MH3389> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>contribution<MH4864> of Moses<MH4872>, the servant<MH5650> of the LORD<MH3068>, and the congregation<MH6951> of Israel<MH3478>, for the tent<MH168> of the testimony<MH5715>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>For the sons<MH1121> of the wicked<MH4849> Athaliah<MH6271> had broken<MH6555> into<MH6555> the house<MH1004> of God<MH430>, and even<MH1571> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>used<MH6213a> the holy<MH6944> things<MH6944> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> for the Baals<MH1168a>. <p class="hdg">Temple Repaired</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> commanded<MH559>, and they made<MH6213a> a chest<MH727> and set<MH5414> it outside<MH2351> by the gate<MH8179> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And they made<MH5414> a proclamation<MH6963> in Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389> to bring<MH935> to the LORD<MH3068> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>contribution<MH4864> <i>commanded by</i> Moses<MH4872> the servant<MH5650> of God<MH430> on Israel<MH3478> in the wilderness<MH4057b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>All<MH3605> the officers<MH8269> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> rejoiced<MH8055>, and they brought<MH935> in<MH935> <i>their contribution</i> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>dropped<MH7993> <i>it</i> into the chest<MH727> until<MH5704> they had finished<MH3615>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>It happened<MH1961> that whenever<MH6256> the chest<MH727> was brought<MH935> to the king&#8217;s<MH4428> officer<MH6496> by the Levites<MH3881>, and they saw<MH7200> that the money<MH3701> was substantial<MH7227a>, the king&#8217;s<MH4428> scribe<MH5613b> and the chief<MH7218> priest&#8217;s<MH3548> officer<MH6496> would come<MH935> and empty<MH6168> the chest<MH727>, and pick<MH5375> it up<MH5375> and return<MH7725> it to its place<MH4725>. They did<MH6213a> this<MH3541> daily<MH3117> and collected<MH622> a large<MH7230> amount<MH7230> of money<MH3701>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> and Jehoiada<MH3077> gave<MH5414> it to those who did<MH6213a> the work<MH4399> of the service<MH5656> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>; and they hired<MH7936> masons<MH2672> and carpenters<MH2796> to restore<MH2318> the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, and also<MH1571> workers<MH2796> in iron<MH1270> and bronze<MH5178> to repair<MH2388> the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So the workmen<MH4399, 6213a> labored<MH6213a>, and the repair<MH724> work<MH4399> progressed<MH5927> in their hands<MH3027>, and they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>restored<MH5975> the house<MH1004> of God<MH430> according<MH5921> to its <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>specifications<MH4971> and strengthened<MH553> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>When they had finished<MH3615>, they brought<MH935> the rest<MH7605> of the money<MH3701> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428> and Jehoiada<MH3077>; and it was made<MH6213a> into utensils<MH3627> for the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, utensils<MH3627> for the service<MH8335> and the burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a>, and pans<MH3709> and utensils<MH3627> of gold<MH2091> and silver<MH3701>. And they offered<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> in the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> continually<MH8548>, all<MH3605> the days<MH3117> of Jehoiada<MH3077>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now Jehoiada<MH3077> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>reached<MH2204> a good<MH7646, 3117> old<MH2204> age<MH3117> and he died<MH4191>; he was 130<MH3967, 7970> years<MH8141> old<MH1121> at his death<MH4194>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And they buried<MH6912> him in the city<MH5892b> of David<MH1732> with the kings<MH4428>, because<MH3588> he had done<MH6213a> well<MH2899b> in Israel<MH3478> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>for God<MH430> and His house<MH1004>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But after<MH310> the death<MH4194> of Jehoiada<MH3077> the officials<MH8269> of Judah<MH3063> came<MH935> and bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to the king<MH4428>, and the king<MH4428> listened<MH8085> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And they abandoned<MH5800a> the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of their fathers<MH1>, and served<MH5647> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Asherim<MH842> and the idols<MH6091>; so wrath<MH7110a> came<MH1961> upon Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389> for this<MH2088> guilt<MH819> of theirs. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Yet He sent<MH7971> prophets<MH5030> to them to bring<MH7725> them back<MH7725> to the LORD<MH3068>; and they testified<MH5749b> against them, but they would not listen<MH238>. <p class="hdg">Joash Murders Son of Jehoiada</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then the Spirit<MH7307> of God<MH430> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>covered<MH3847> Zechariah<MH2148a>, the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077> the priest<MH3548> like<MH3847> clothing<MH3847>; and he stood<MH5975> above<MH4480, 5921> the people<MH5971a> and said<MH559> to them, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> God<MH430> has said<MH559>, &#8216;Why<MH4100> do you break<MH5674a> the commandments<MH4687> of the LORD<MH3068> and do not prosper<MH6743b>? Because<MH3588> you have abandoned<MH5800a> the LORD<MH3068>, He has also abandoned<MH5800a> you.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So they conspired<MH7194> against<MH5921> him, and at the command<MH4687> of the king<MH4428> they stoned<MH7275> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>to death<MH68> in the courtyard<MH2691a> of the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So Joash<MH3060> the king<MH4428> did not remember<MH2142> the kindness<MH2617a> which<MH834> <i>Zechariah&#8217;s</i> father<MH1> Jehoiada<MH3077> had shown<MH6213a> him, but he murdered<MH2026> his son<MH1121>. And as <i>Zechariah</i> died<MH4194> he said<MH559>, &#8220;May the LORD<MH3068> see<MH7200> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>avenge<MH1875>!&#8221; <p class="hdg">Aram Invades and Defeats Judah</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now it happened<MH1961> at the turn<MH8622> of the year<MH8141> that the army<MH2428> of the Arameans<MH758> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH5921> <i>Joash;</i> and they came<MH935> to Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389>, destroyed<MH7843> all<MH3605> the officials<MH8269> of the people<MH5971a> from among the people<MH5971a>, and sent<MH7971> all<MH3605> their spoils<MH7998> to the king<MH4428> of Damascus<MH1834>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Indeed<MH3588>, the army<MH2428> of the Arameans<MH758> came<MH935> with a small<MH4705> number<MH4705> of men<MH376>; yet the LORD<MH3068> handed<MH5414, 3027> a very<MH3966> great<MH7230> army<MH2428> over<MH5414> to them, because<MH3588> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>Judah and Joash had abandoned<MH5800a> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of their fathers<MH1>. So they executed<MH6213a> judgment<MH8201> on Joash<MH3060>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>When they left<MH1980> him (for they left<MH5800a> him very<MH7227a> sick<MH4251>), his own servants<MH5650> conspired<MH7194> against<MH5921> him because of the blood<MH1818> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077> the priest<MH3548>, and they murdered<MH2026> him on his bed<MH4296>. So he died<MH4191>, and they buried<MH6912> him in the city<MH5892b> of David<MH1732>, but they did not bury<MH6912> him in the tombs<MH6913> of the kings<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Now these<MH428> are the men who conspired<MH7194> against<MH5921> him: Zabad<MH2066> the son<MH1121> of Shimeath<MH8100> the Ammonitess<MH5985>, and Jehozabad<MH3075> the son<MH1121> of Shimrith<MH8116> the Moabitess<MH4125>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_chronicles/24-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>As to his sons<MH1121> and the many<MH7230> pronouncements<MH4853b> against<MH5921> him and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>rebuilding<MH3245> of the house<MH1004> of God<MH430>, behold<MH2009>, they are written<MH3789> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>treatise<MH4097> of the Book<MH5612> of the Kings<MH4428>.
