a warning that Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz might carry out an attack.</p><p>Last month, a person close to the 19-year-old contacted the law enforcement agency to warn of "the potential of him conducting a school shooting".</p><p>But protocols were not followed and the tipline did not pass along the complaint, the FBI said.</p><p>It was not the first potential warning to shooting, two Americas</a></li> </ul><h2 class="story-body__crosshead">What was the complaint?</h2><p>On 5 January a person close to the teenager contacted the FBI tipline to provide "information about Cruz's gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behaviour, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting", said an FBI press release.</p><p>The agency said that under established protocols, the caller's information to the Public Access Line should have been assessed as a potential threat to life and passed on to the Miami field office.</p><p>"We have determined these protocols were not followed," said the FBI.</p><p>FBI Director Christopher Wray said the bureau is "still investigating the facts".</p><p>"I am committed to getting to the bottom of what happened in this particular matter, as well as reviewing our processes for responding to information that we receive from the public," he said.</p><p>"We have spoken with victims and families, and deeply regret the additional pain this causes all those affected by this horrific tragedy," he added. </p><p>In 2016, the FBI received about 1,300 tips a day through its website, which is staffed around the clock by two dozen people.</p><p>In addition to online tips, FBI field offices receive dozens of calls.
