For <i>this</i> matter<MH1697> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>your responsibility<MH5921>, but we will be with you; be<MH2388> courageous<MH2388> and act<MH6213a>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then Ezra<MH5830> stood<MH6965> and made the leading<MH8269> priests<MH3548>, the Levites<MH3881>, and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> take<MH7650> an<MH7650> oath<MH7650> that they would do<MH6213a> according to this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>proposal<MH1697>; so they took<MH7650> the<MH7650> oath<MH7650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Ezra<MH5830> rose<MH6965> from before<MH4480, 6440> the house<MH1004> of God<MH430> and went<MH1980> into the chamber<MH3957> of Jehohanan<MH3076> the son<MH1121> of Eliashib<MH475>. Although he went<MH1980> there<MH8033>, he did not eat<MH398> bread<MH3899> nor<MH3808> drink<MH8354> water<MH4325>, because<MH3588> he was mourning<MH56> over<MH5921> the unfaithfulness<MH4604> of the exiles<MH1473>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So they made<MH5674a> a proclamation<MH6963> throughout Judah<MH3063> and Jerusalem<MH3389> to all<MH3605> the exiles<MH1121, 1473>, that they were to assemble<MH6908> at Jerusalem<MH3389>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and that whoever<MH3605, 834> did not come<MH935> within three<MH7969> days<MH3117>, in accordance with the counsel<MH6098> of the leaders<MH8269> and the elders<MH2205>, all<MH3605> his property<MH7399> would be forfeited<MH2763a>, and he himself<MH1931> would be excluded<MH914> from the assembly<MH6951> of the exiles<MH1473>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of Judah<MH3063> and Benjamin<MH1144> assembled<MH6908> at Jerusalem<MH3389> within the three<MH7969> days<MH3117>. It was the ninth<MH8671> month<MH2320> on the twentieth<MH6242> of the month<MH2320>, and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> sat<MH3427> in the public<MH7339> square<MH7339> <i>before</i> the house<MH1004> of God<MH430>, trembling<MH7460> because<MH5921> of this matter<MH1697> and the <i>heavy</i> rain<MH1653>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then Ezra<MH5830> the priest<MH3548> stood<MH6965> up<MH6965> and said<MH559> to them, “You have been<MH4603> unfaithful<MH4603> and have married<MH3427> foreign<MH5237> wives<MH802>, adding<MH3254> to the guilt<MH819> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> therefore, make<MH5414> confession<MH8426> to the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of your fathers<MH1> and do<MH6213a> His will<MH7522>; and separate<MH914> yourselves from the peoples<MH5971a> of the land<MH776> and from the foreign<MH5237> wives<MH802>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the assembly<MH6951> replied<MH6030a> with a loud<MH1419> voice<MH6963>, “It is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>our duty<MH5921> to do<MH6213a> exactly<MH3651> as you have said<MH1697>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>However<MH61>, there are many<MH7227a> people<MH5971a>, it is the rainy<MH1653> season<MH6256>, and we are not able<MH3581b> to stand<MH5975> in the open<MH2351>. Nor<MH3808> <i>can</i> the task<MH4399> <i>be done</i> in one<MH259> or two<MH8147> days<MH3117>, because<MH3588> we have done<MH6586> a great<MH7235a> wrong<MH6586> in this<MH2088> matter<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Please<MH4994> let our leaders<MH8269> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>represent<MH5975> all<MH3605> the assembly<MH6951> and have all<MH3605> those in our cities<MH5892b> who have married<MH3427> foreign<MH5237> wives<MH802> come<MH935> at appointed<MH2163> times<MH6256>, together<MH5973> with<MH5973> the elders<MH2205> and judges<MH8199> of each<MH5892b> city<MH5892b>, until<MH5704> the fierce<MH2740> anger<MH639> of our God<MH430> on<MH5704> account<MH5704> of<MH5704> this<MH2088> matter<MH1697> is turned<MH7725> away<MH7725> from us.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Only<MH389> Jonathan<MH3083> the son<MH1121> of Asahel<MH6214> and Jahzeiah<MH3167> the son<MH1121> of Tikvah<MH8616> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>opposed<MH5975, 5921> this<MH2088>, with Meshullam<MH4918> and Shabbethai<MH7678> the Levite<MH3881> supporting<MH5826> them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But the exiles<MH1121, 1473> did<MH6213a> so<MH3651>. And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Ezra<MH5830> the priest<MH3548> selected<MH914> men<MH376> <i>who were</i> the heads<MH7218> of fathers’<MH1> <i>households</i> for <i>each of</i> their father’s<MH1> households<MH1004>, all<MH3605> of them by name<MH8034>. So they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>convened<MH3427> on the first<MH259> day<MH3117> of the tenth<MH6224> month<MH2320> to investigate<MH1875> the matter<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And they finished<MH3615> <i>investigating</i> all<MH3605> the men<MH376> who had married<MH3427> foreign<MH5237> wives<MH802> by the first<MH259> day<MH3117> of the first<MH7223> month<MH2320>. <p class="hdg">List of Offenders</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now among<MH4480> the sons<MH1121> of the priests<MH3548> who<MH834> had married<MH3427> foreign<MH5237> wives<MH802> were found<MH4672> of the sons<MH1121> of Jeshua<MH3091> the son<MH1121> of Jozadak<MH3087>, and his brothers<MH251>: Maaseiah<MH4641>, Eliezer<MH461>, Jarib<MH3402>, and Gedaliah<MH1436a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>They <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>pledged<MH5414, 3027> to send<MH3318> away<MH3318> their wives<MH802>, and being guilty<MH818>, <i>they offered</i> a ram<MH352a> of the flock<MH6629> for their guilt<MH818>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Of the sons<MH1121> of Immer<MH564>, <i>there were</i> Hanani<MH2607> and Zebadiah<MH2069>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>and of the sons<MH1121> of Harim<MH2766>: Maaseiah<MH4641>, Elijah<MH452>, Shemaiah<MH8098>, Jehiel<MH3171>, and Uzziah<MH5818>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>and of the sons<MH1121> of Pashhur<MH6583>: Elioenai<MH454b>, Maaseiah<MH4641>, Ishmael<MH3458>, Nethanel<MH5417>, Jozabad<MH3107>, and Elasah<MH501>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Of the Levites<MH3881> <i>there were</i> Jozabad<MH3107>, Shimei<MH8096>, Kelaiah<MH7041> (that is, Kelita<MH7042>), Pethahiah<MH6611>, Judah<MH3063>, and Eliezer<MH461>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Of the singers<MH7891> <i>there was</i> Eliashib<MH475>; and of the gatekeepers<MH7778>: Shallum<MH7967>, Telem<MH2928>, and Uri<MH221>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Of Israel<MH3478>, of the sons<MH1121> of Parosh<MH6551> <i>there were</i> Ramiah<MH7422>, Izziah<MH3150>, Malchijah<MH4441>, Mijamin<MH4326>, Eleazar<MH499>, Malchijah<MH4441>, and Benaiah<MH1141>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/ezra/10-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>and of the sons<MH1121> of Elam<MH5867b>: Mattaniah<MH4983>, Zechariah<MH2148a>, Jehiel<MH3171>, Abdi<MH5660>, Jeremoth<MH3406>, and Elijah<MH452>;
