class="img-responsive" style="margin: 10px auto 20px auto;"> <p>The Digital TV Group (DTG) has released an analysis on live sports streaming performance during major 2024 events, including Wimbledon and the Olympics. While notable latency improvements were observed, challenges remain, especially in ensuring consistent performance across various devices.<br /> <br /> Sky Glass showed the lowest latency among IP streaming platforms, while Android and premium brand Smart TVs exhibited delays of over a minute in some cases. Console streaming saw the largest improvement, reducing latency by over 34 seconds.<br /> <br /> Average latency for BBC iPlayer improved significantly from last year's Coronation coverage (55.9 seconds) to 40 seconds during the 2024 Olympics, a 15.9-second improvement.<br /> <br /> DTG found that traditional broadcasts still outperformed IP streaming in terms of latency.<br /> <br /> In terms of accessibility and usability, subtitles were mostly accurate, but some apps, like Channel 4’s, showed inconsistencies in live TV options across devices. Certain devices now offer UHD prompts, improving user experience.<br /> <br /> Initial testing suggests DVB-T2 may be more energy-efficient than IP streaming, warranting further analysis.<br /> <br /> The DTG urges industry stakeholders to prioritize these areas to meet the growing demand for reliable, real-time access to live events.<br /> <br /> "This analysis underscores the progress we’re seeing in reducing latency for live sports streaming, bringing the viewer experience closer in line with traditional broadcast standards," said Ranjeet Kaur, Programme Director at DTG. "While our findings show clear improvements, particularly with platforms like Sky Glass and console-based streaming, there’s still work to be done to ensure consistent performance across all devices and services.
