They are in fact developing an innovative, interdisciplinary methodology to present the heritage dimensions of these bridges, as well as those relating to engineering, or more broadly the impacts they can have on their environment, to students and citizens of the cities in question. Rapid contact via the school's EELISA team revealed a mutual interest, enabling us to respond quickly to the call for applications.</p><p><strong>Can you share key takeaways from your experience ?</strong></p><p>For me, the main interest lies in sharing not only expertise, but above all, different perspectives on the same subject of study, taking into account the cultural diversity of each participant. Not only is this of intrinsic interest, but it also trains our teams, colleagues and students to navigate in the increasingly international environments with which we are already, or will be, confronted.</p><p><strong>Why do you think people should join EELISA ?</strong></p><p>EELISA is an ideal setting for learning about international collaboration and interculturality, which we need more and more. As well as being a source of inspiration and enrichment, it also enabled me to assert our posture and reinforce certain methodological approaches in the sustainable design expertise that is developed at the d.school for several months. I would like to highlight the richness of the exchanges generated by the diversity of the profiles involved in the process, in line with our holistic approach of design.</p><p><strong>Why do you think people should join EELISA ?</strong></p><p>EELISA is an opportunity to collaborate with peers from different universities on common issues. Now more than ever, it's essential to get together to work on the challenges of the future to have a significant effect. This European university appeared to us as an opportunity to extend our research collaboration to the teaching part of our jobs. Within the “Water” community, our proposal on geomechanics was recently selected for the first Joint Call for Inter-Institutional Activities and will organise student and staff exchanges.</p><p><strong>Can you share key takeaways from your experience?</strong></p><p>As researchers, we are more apt to discuss research with colleagues from other institutions and to establish new lines of research. My academic advisor forwarded me an invitation to a FAFA (a Franco-German organization) congress in Brittany on energy transition. EELISA invited students from French and German universities (PSL, FAU and École nationale des ponts et chaussées) working in this field to meet and potentially create a new community. Guess what? That's what happened afterwards.</p><p><strong>Can you share key takeaways from your experience?</strong></p><p>We had gotten along so well at the FAFA event that we created the first student-led EELISA community in Fall 2021. We organized a trip to Germany in Spring 2022 at our German partner university. It was a moment of community building, defining the next steps, knowing more about one another’s specializations and research, but also of debating energy transition. We had the chance to visit the German headquarters of Framatome (a Franco-American nuclear energy company). It was the perfect representation of the energy industry’s complexity and controversy.</p><p><strong>Why do you think people should join EELISA?</strong></p><p>Taking part in EELISA was one of the most memorable moments of my school year. This program allows you to learn more about your field and in a fun way, to develop your communication skills in foreign languages and discover other cultures autonomously. The First EELISA Call for Joint Inter-institutional Activities in Communities last July was an opportunity for me to be directly involved in an EELISA community.</p><p><strong>Can you share key takeaways from your experience?</strong></p><p>The call for joint activities gave me the opportunity to be involved in an EELISA Community led by UPM, for the “Crowdsourcing and Championship Against Disinformation” project. It fits our initiative at the Library, Archives and Heritage Department to better equip our students against disinformation. Besides, we are in the process of acquiring digital badges for our students who will complete the library courses on disinformation.</p><p><strong>Why do you think people should join EELISA?</strong></p><p>EELISA is a great opportunity to work with different people from various socio-cultural backgrounds, with a variety of skills! I learnt about EELISA through the School's internal communication.</p><p><strong>Can you share key takeaways from your experience ?</strong><br />One of the EELISA’s aspect that interested me a lot was the idea of communities on a common issue. With a colleague from LEESU, we joined the "Water in an area of Change" Community launched by the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). In this framework, we proposed a student workshop in May 2022, in line with environmental measurements. It was entitled Stormwater in the sustainable city.  We had two fieldwork sessions on the ecological functioning of a small waterbody for rainwater management and also on an experimental site for monitoring the functioning of “rain trees”. Then, we visited a neighbourhood in Paris where nature-based solutions are used for stormwater management. During this workshop, there were exchanges between some students from École des Ponts and other EELISA participants (students, staff, etc.) mainly coming from Madrid (UPM) and Paris (PSL).</p><p><strong>Why do you think people should join EELISA ?</strong><br />What seems very important for me in what EELISA is proposing is this vision of moving together towards a common training track for European engineers that can best integrate the dimension of ecological and energy transition. From this point of view, it is necessary to coordinate with other partner universities with the same objective. Finally, I would like to take the example of the last summer’s Summer School organised by PSL, to show the interest of EELISA for PhD candidates or researchers. Open to students and PhD candidates from EELISA partner universities, a LEESU PhD candidate was able to attend the session entitled "European School of positive impact and responsibility". As soon as I took up my post, I joined a working group dedicated to entrepreneurship.<br /><br /><strong>Can you share key takeaways from your experience ?</strong><br />It's very interesting to meet colleagues from other European countries who do the same job as you. Our exchanges are always very rich. The network gives everyone the opportunity to share best practices, tools and activities. Thanks to EELISA joint call, I can open the event One night to innovate to all the alliance, and share the organization with my German, Italian and Swiss colleagues. As a result every student team will be international.</p><p><strong>Why do you think people should join EELISA ?</strong></p><p>Being part of the EELISA European University significantly expands opportunities for students to access training programs and events. The variety of approaches across all the institutions represented considerably broadens the possibilities. For young entrepreneurs, it's a unique chance to seize new markets on a European scale and expand their network by meeting new partners.</p><p> </p><h3><img alt="" src="/sites/ecoledesponts.fr/files/ckfinder/ckfinder/david_sayers.png" style="width: 130px; height: 216px; margin-left: 6px; margin-right: 6px; float: left;" />David SAYERS</h3><p><em>Lecturer</em></p><p><strong>How did you reach out to EELISA ?</strong><br />La Source, the Ecole des Ponts library, is home to the Fonds Octave Fradet, an unstudied collection of documents from the estate of a French engineer involved in railroad construction on Ottoman territories from the Balkans to Anatolia from the late 19th to the early 20th century. When we learned of the Fonds’ existence, we thought of EELISA right away. Fradet’s work, just like EELISA, spans multiple regions, geographies, and identities across Europe. Our EELISA Community (HEAR-European Identity) explores the intersection between engineering, society, culture, heritage, and identity on a European scale, so a project about the Fonds Octave Fradet fit right in. Our proposed project, “Railroads and European Identity from the 19th Century to the Present,” will explore the role of railroad construction in identity formation on a continental, imperial, and national scale on hand of the examples of Europe, the Ottoman Empire, and the Republic of Turkey. Apart from the Fradet Collection, we will be drawing on the insights of colleagues from our partner institutions, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and Istanbul Teknik Üniversitesi, who will join us for a kick-off symposium to be held at Ecole des Ponts in 2025. This was our first EELISA proposal, and in its preparation, we received outstanding support from two very different sources. Firstly, Mustafa SEVIMLI, EELISA Project Manager at Ecole des Ponts, aided us in every imaginable way, from explaining the application process to helping us contact potential partner institutions. Secondly, the Paris Institute for Critical Thinking (PICT) put us in touch with key railroad officials in Turkey, thanks to whom we were able to gain personal access to some important sites mentioned in the Fradet collection. We would like to thank Mustafa, our colleagues at PICT, and everyone else who helped us with the proposal and application process.<br /><br /><strong>Can you share key takeaways from your experience ?</strong><br />Our project application process showed us that there is a keen interest in discussing—and a strong need to discuss—the socio-political implications of engineering challenges and thus to think beyond the merely technical aspects of these challenges. This interest spans from international organizations such as EELISA to national engineering schools such as Ecole des Ponts and non-profit associations such as PICT. It is only through a creative and critical approach that brings together expertise in engineering, the sciences, and the humanities across multiple languages and cultures that many current issues can be fruitfully tackled, and EELISA is a perfect platform for doing so.</p><p><strong>Why do you think people should join EELISA ?</strong></p><p>EELISA offers an opportunity for researchers from a broad range of disciplines and backgrounds to meet, join forces, and learn from each other in the pursuit of pressing issues that are common to us all.
