I am also a member of the Board of the Centre. Until July 2012 I held a similar adjunct position in the <a href="https://www.monash.edu/it">Faculty of Information Technology</a> at Monash. <p> Prior to my retirement from my permanent position in August 2003, I was a Principal Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor for just on 18 years at Monash and at Chisholm Institute of Technology. Since my retirement I have worked primarily in computational linguistics, particularly in areas relating to Japanese electronic dictionaries and text processing. My major retirement project was a <a href="https://minerva-access.unimelb.edu.au/handle/11343/211675">PhD</a> in this field, under the supervision of <a href="https://people.eng.unimelb.edu.au/tbaldwin/">Tim Baldwin</a> in the NLP Group at the University of Melbourne and <a href="http://research.ntu.edu.sg/expertise/academicprofile/Pages/StaffProfile.aspx?ST_EMAILID=FCBOND">Francis Bond</a> at NTU in Singapore. Here is a list of my <a href="http://www.edrdg.org/~jwb/papers.html">papers</a>. <p> <a name="t_tea"><b>Teaching</b></a><br> Virtually all my teaching (1985-2002) was in the field of digital and data communications. I taught subjects in the Computer Science and Digital Systems undergraduate courses, but mainly worked in the Master of Digital Communications. I have retained some on-line information about the <a href="subjects/"> subjects</a> I taught. Some people still use the simulator I wrote for the <a href="hdlc_demo.html">HDLC</a> protocol. <!-- I was quoted in an article in the <a href="http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/2001/10/06/FFXCI1BCFSC.html">Melbourne Age</A> recently. <em>(You may need to disable style sheets or use this <a href="FFXCI1BCFSC.html">local copy</a>.)</em> <p> In 2002 I supervised a Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) student, Ronald Szeto, who developed a terrific <a href="http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/hons/projects/2002/Siuwing.Szeto/">TCP Simulator</a>. (Ronald was the top honours student that year.) --> <p><a name="t_jpn"><b>Japanese</b></a><br> <!-- <img src="jthings.png" alt="Things Japanese"> --> I have a particular interest in <a href="japanese.html">Things Japanese</a>, and in particular the above-mentioned electronic Japanese/English dictionaries. <br>From December 2000 to June 2001 I was a Visiting Professor at the <a href = "http://www.aa.tufs.ac.jp/en">Research Institute for the Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa</a> (ILCAA) in the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies in Japan. </p> <p> <font size="-1"> <a href="translations.html">[Translations of this page]</a> </font> </p> </body> </html>
