So they came<MH935> in<MH935> and stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> said<MH559> to them, “I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>had<MH2492b> a dream<MH2472>, and my spirit<MH7307> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>is anxious<MH6470> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>understand<MH3045> the dream<MH2472>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then the Chaldeans<MH3778> spoke<MH1696> to the king<MH4428> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Aramaic<MH762>: “O king<MH4430>, live<MH2418> forever<MH5957>! Tell<MH560> the dream<MH2493> to your servants<MH5649>, and we will declare<MH2331b> the interpretation<MH6591>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>The king<MH4430> replied<MH6032> to the Chaldeans<MH3779>, “The command<MH4406> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>from me is firm<MH230>: if<MH2006> you do not make<MH3046> known<MH3046> to me the dream<MH2493> and its interpretation<MH6591>, you will be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>torn<MH5648> limb<MH1917> from limb and your houses<MH1005> will be turned<MH7761> into a rubbish<MH5122> heap<MH5122>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But if<MH2006> you declare<MH2331b> the dream<MH2493> and its interpretation<MH6591>, you will receive<MH6902> from me gifts<MH4978> and a reward<MH5023> and great<MH7690> honor<MH3367>; therefore<MH3861a> declare<MH2331b> to me the dream<MH2493> and its interpretation<MH6591>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>They answered<MH6032> a second<MH8579> time<MH8579> and said<MH560>, “Let the king<MH4430> tell<MH560> the dream<MH2493> to his servants<MH5649>, and we will declare<MH2331b> the interpretation<MH6591>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The king<MH4430> replied<MH6032>, “I know<MH3046> for certain<MH3330a> that you are trying<MH2084> to<MH2084> buy<MH2084> time<MH5732>, because<MH6903, 1768> you have perceived<MH2370> that the command<MH4406> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>from me is firm<MH230>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>that if<MH2006> you do not make<MH3046> the dream<MH2493> known<MH3046> to me, there is only one<MH2298> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>decree<MH1882> for you. For you have agreed<MH2164> together<MH2164> to speak<MH560> lying<MH3538a> and corrupt<MH7844> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>words<MH4406> before<MH6925> me until<MH5705, 1768> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>situation<MH5732> is changed<MH8133>; therefore<MH3861a> tell<MH560> me the dream<MH2493>, so that I may know<MH3046> that you can declare<MH2331b> to me its interpretation<MH6591>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The Chaldeans<MH3779> answered<MH6032> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>the king<MH4430> and said<MH560>, “There<MH383> is<MH383> no<MH3809> person<MH606> on earth<MH3007> who<MH1768> could<MH3202> declare<MH2331b> the matter<MH4406> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>to the king<MH4430>, because<MH6903, 1768> no<MH3606, 3809> great<MH7229> king<MH4430> or ruler<MH7990> has <i>ever</i> asked<MH7593> anything<MH4406> like this<MH1836> of any<MH3606> soothsayer<MH2749> priest<MH2749>, sorcerer<MH826>, or Chaldean<MH3779>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Moreover, the thing<MH4406> which<MH1768> the king<MH4430> demands<MH7593> is difficult<MH3358>, and there<MH383> is<MH383> no<MH3809> one<MH321> else<MH321> who<MH1768> could declare<MH2331b> it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>to the king<MH4430> except<MH3861b> gods<MH426>, whose<MH1768> dwelling<MH4070> place<MH4094b> is not with <i>mortal</i> flesh<MH1321>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Because<MH6903> of this<MH1836>, the king<MH4430> became<MH1149> angry<MH1149> and extremely<MH7690> furious<MH7108>, and he gave<MH560> orders<MH560> to kill<MH7> all<MH3606> the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> of Babylon<MH895>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>decree<MH1882> was issued<MH5312> that the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> be killed<MH6992>; and they looked<MH1156> for<MH1156> Daniel<MH1841> and his friends<MH2269>, to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>kill<MH6992> <i>them.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then<MH116> Daniel<MH1841> replied<MH8421> with discretion<MH5843> and discernment<MH2942> to Arioch<MH746b>, the captain<MH7229> of the king’s<MH4430> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>bodyguard<MH2877>, who<MH1768> had gone<MH5312> out<MH5312> to kill<MH6992> the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> of Babylon<MH895>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>he said<MH560> to Arioch<MH746b>, the king’s<MH4430> officer<MH7990>, “For what<MH4101> reason<MH5922, 4101> is the decree<MH1882> from the king<MH4430> <i>so</i> harsh<MH2685>?” Then<MH116> Arioch<MH746b> informed<MH3046> Daniel<MH1841> of the matter<MH4406>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So Daniel<MH1841> went<MH5954> in<MH5954> and requested<MH1156> of the king<MH4430> that he would give<MH5415> him a grace<MH2166> period<MH2166>, so that he might declare<MH2331b> the interpretation<MH6591> to the king<MH4430>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then<MH116> Daniel<MH1841> went<MH236> to his house<MH1005> and informed<MH3046> his friends<MH2269>, Hananiah<MH2608a>, Mishael<MH4331> and Azariah<MH5839>, about the matter<MH4406>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>so that they might request<MH1156> compassion<MH7359> from the God<MH426> of heaven<MH8065> concerning<MH5922> this<MH1836> secret<MH7328>, so<MH1768> that<MH1768> Daniel<MH1841> and his friends<MH2269> would not be killed<MH7> with the rest<MH7606> of the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> of Babylon<MH895>. <p class="hdg">The Secret Is Revealed to Daniel</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then<MH116> the secret<MH7328> was revealed<MH1541> to Daniel<MH1841> in a night<MH3916> vision<MH2376>. Then<MH116> Daniel<MH1841> blessed<MH1289> the God<MH426> of heaven<MH8065>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Daniel<MH1841> said<MH560>, <p class="indent1stline">“May the name<MH8036> of God<MH426> be blessed<MH1289> forever<MH5957> and ever<MH5957>, <t><p class="indent1">For wisdom<MH2452> and power<MH1370> belong to Him. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“It is He who changes<MH8133> the times<MH5732> and the periods<MH2166>; <t><p class="indent1">He removes<MH5709> kings<MH4430> and appoints<MH6966> kings<MH4430>; <t><p class="indent1">He gives<MH3052> wisdom<MH2452> to wise<MH2445> men<MH2445>, <t><p class="indent1">And knowledge<MH4486> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>people of understanding<MH999>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“It is He who reveals<MH1541> the profound<MH5994> and hidden<MH5642a> things<MH5642a>; <t><p class="indent1">He knows<MH3046> what<MH4101> is in the darkness<MH2816>, <t><p class="indent1">And the light<MH5094a> dwells<MH8271> with Him. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>“To You, God<MH426> of my fathers<MH2>, I give<MH3029> thanks<MH3029> and praise<MH7624>, <t><p class="indent1">For You have given<MH3052> me wisdom<MH2452> and power<MH1370>; <t><p class="indent1">Even now<MH3705> You have made<MH3046> known<MH3046> to me what<MH1768> we requested<MH1156> of You, <t><p class="indent1">For You have made<MH3046> known<MH3046> to us the king’s<MH4430> matter<MH4406>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Thereupon<MH6903, 1836>, Daniel<MH1841> went<MH5954> to Arioch<MH746b>, whom<MH1768> the king<MH4430> had appointed<MH4483> to kill<MH7> the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> of Babylon<MH895>; he went<MH236> and said<MH560> this<MH3652> to him: “Do not kill<MH7> the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> of Babylon<MH895>! Take<MH5954> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>into the king’s<MH4430> presence<MH6925>, and I will declare<MH2331b> the interpretation<MH6591> to the king<MH4430>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Then<MH116> Arioch<MH746b> hurriedly<MH927> brought<MH5954> Daniel<MH1841> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>into the king’s<MH4430> presence<MH6925> and spoke<MH560> to him as<MH3652> follows<MH3652>: “I have found<MH7912> a man<MH1400> among<MH4481> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>exiles<MH1123, 1547> from Judah<MH3061> who<MH1768> can make<MH3046> the interpretation<MH6591> known<MH3046> to the king<MH4430>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>The king<MH4430> said<MH560> to Daniel<MH1841>, whose<MH1768> name<MH8036> was Belteshazzar<MH1096>, “Are you able<MH3546> to make<MH3046> known<MH3046> to me the dream<MH2493> which<MH1768> I have seen<MH2370> and its interpretation<MH6591>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Daniel<MH1841> answered<MH6032> before<MH6925> the king<MH4430> and said<MH560>, “As for the secret<MH7328> about which<MH1768> the king<MH4430> has inquired<MH7593>, neither<MH3809> wise<MH2445> men<MH2445>, sorcerers<MH826>, soothsayer<MH2749> priests<MH2749>, <i>nor</i> diviners<MH1505> are able<MH3202> to declare<MH2331b> <i>it</i> to the king<MH4430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>However<MH1297>, there<MH383> is<MH383> a God<MH426> in heaven<MH8065> who<MH1768> reveals<MH1541> secrets<MH7328>, and He has made<MH3046> known<MH3046> to King<MH4430> Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020> what<MH4101> will take<MH1934> place<MH1934> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>latter<MH320> days<MH3118>. This<MH1836> was your dream<MH2493> and the visions<MH2376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>in your mind<MH7217> <i>while</i> on your bed<MH4903>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>As for you, O king<MH4430>, <i>while</i> on your bed<MH4903> your thoughts<MH7476> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>turned<MH5559b> to what<MH4101> would take<MH1934> place<MH1934> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>in the future<MH311>; and He who reveals<MH1541> secrets<MH7328> has made<MH3046> known<MH3046> to you what<MH4101> will take<MH1934> place<MH1934>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But as for me, this<MH1836> secret<MH7328> has not been revealed<MH1541> to me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>for any wisdom<MH2452> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>residing<MH383> in me more<MH4481> than<MH4481> <i>in</i> any<MH3606> <i>other</i> living<MH2417> person<MH2417>, but for the purpose<MH1701> of making<MH3046> the interpretation<MH6591> known<MH3046> to the king<MH4430>, and that you may understand<MH3046> the thoughts<MH7476> of your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[af]</a></span>mind<MH3825>. <p class="hdg">The King’s Dream</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>“You, O king<MH4430>, were watching<MH2370> and behold<MH431>, there was a single<MH2298> great<MH7690> statue<MH6755>; that statue<MH6755>, which was large<MH7229> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ag]</a></span>of extraordinary<MH3493> radiance<MH2122>, was standing<MH6966> in front<MH6903> of you, and its appearance<MH7299> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ah]</a></span>awesome<MH1763>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>The head<MH7217> of that statue<MH6755> <i>was made</i> of fine<MH2869> gold<MH1722>, its chest<MH2306> and its arms<MH1872> of silver<MH3702>, its belly<MH4577> and its thighs<MH3410> of bronze<MH5174>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>its legs<MH8243> of iron<MH6523>, <i>and</i> its feet<MH7271> partly<MH4481> of iron<MH6523> and partly<MH4481> of clay<MH2635>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ai]</a></span>continued<MH1934> watching<MH2370> until<MH5705, 1768> a stone<MH69> was broken<MH1505> off without<MH3809> hands<MH3028>, and it struck<MH4223> the statue<MH6755> on its feet<MH7271> of iron<MH6523> and clay<MH2635>, and crushed<MH1855> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Then<MH116> the iron<MH6523>, the clay<MH2635>, the bronze<MH5174>, the silver<MH3702>, and the gold<MH1722> were crushed<MH1855> to<MH1855> pieces<MH1855> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aj]</a></span>all<MH3606> at the same<MH2298> time<MH2298>, and they were like chaff<MH5784> from the summer<MH7007> threshing<MH147> floors<MH147>; and the wind<MH7308> carried<MH5376> them away so that not a trace<MH870> of them was found<MH7912>. But the stone<MH69> that struck<MH4223> the statue<MH6755> became<MH1934> a great<MH7229> mountain<MH2906> and filled<MH4391> the entire<MH3606> earth<MH772>. <p class="hdg">The Interpretation—Babylon the First Kingdom</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>“This<MH1836> <i>was</i> the dream<MH2493>; and <i>now</i> we will tell<MH560> its interpretation<MH6591> before<MH6925> the king<MH4430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>You, O king<MH4430>, are the king<MH4430> of kings<MH4430>, to whom<MH1768> the God<MH426> of heaven<MH8065> has given<MH3052> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ak]</a></span>kingdom<MH4437>, the power<MH2632>, the strength<MH8632b>, and the honor<MH3367>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>and wherever<MH3606, 1768> the sons<MH1123> of mankind<MH606> live<MH1753>, <i>or</i> the animals<MH2423> of the field<MH1251>, or the birds<MH5776> of the sky<MH8065>, He has handed<MH3052, 3028> <i>them</i> over<MH3052> to you and has made you ruler<MH7981> over them all<MH3606>. You are the head<MH7217> of gold<MH1722>. <p class="hdg">Medo-Persia and Greece</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And after<MH870> you another<MH321> kingdom<MH4437> will arise<MH6966> inferior<MH772> to you, then another<MH321> third<MH8523> kingdom<MH4437> of bronze<MH5174>, which<MH1768> will rule<MH7981> over all<MH3606> the earth<MH772>. <p class="hdg">Rome</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Then there will be a fourth<MH7244> kingdom<MH4437> as strong<MH8624> as iron<MH6523>; just<MH6903, 1768> as iron<MH6523> smashes<MH1855> and crushes<MH2827> everything<MH3606>, so, like iron<MH6523> that crushes<MH7490>, it will smash<MH1855> and crush<MH7490> all<MH3606> these<MH459> things. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And in that you saw<MH2370> the feet<MH7271> and toes<MH677>, partly<MH4481> of potter’s<MH6353> clay<MH2635> and partly<MH4481> of iron<MH6523>, it will be a divided<MH6386> kingdom<MH4437>; but it will have<MH1934> within it some<MH4481> of the toughness<MH5326> of iron<MH6523>, since<MH6903, 1768> you saw<MH2370> the iron<MH6523> mixed<MH6151> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[al]</a></span>common<MH2917> clay<MH2635>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And <i>just as</i> the toes<MH677> of the feet<MH7271> <i>were</i> partly<MH4481> of iron<MH6523> and partly<MH4481> of pottery<MH2635>, <i>so</i> some<MH4481, 7118> of the kingdom<MH4437> will be strong<MH8624>, and part<MH4481> of it will be fragile<MH8406>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/2-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>In that you saw<MH2370> the iron<MH6523> mixed<MH6151> with <span class="fn"><a
