<p><strong>斎藤圭一郎</strong>監督と<strong>伏原あかね</strong>撮影監督によると，PV内でも使用されたこのカットの制作において，作品の世界観と撮影処理の「落としどころ」が模索されることになった。<a href="#f-bf097eff" id="fn-bf097eff" name="fn-bf097eff" title="『葬送のフリーレン』Blu-ray Vol.1 映像特典の第1話オーディオコメンタリより。">*1</a> 結果，アニメの水表現でよく使われる「波ガラス」<a href="#f-e3b8c19d" id="fn-e3b8c19d" name="fn-e3b8c19d" title="「波ガラス」とは，ソフトウェアを用いて水の屈折による歪みを再現する方法。フィルム撮影の時代には，歪んだガラスをレンズの前に置いて撮影したことからこう呼ばれる。">*2</a> のような，<strong>ギラギラとした撮影処理を施さない画作り</strong>に決まったという。これを踏まえ，色彩設計の<strong>大野春恵</strong>も，撮影処理が乗らないことを前提とした色彩設計を行うことになった。</p> <p>斎藤監督は色彩設計と撮影処理の擦り合わせに関してこう述べている。</p> <blockquote> <p><strong><span style="font-size: 80%;">処理に関してもそうなんですけど，あんまりボヤッとさせたくないっていうか，瑞々しさみたいなのが出るといいなと思っていて。でもシックにまとめると彩度が低くなってしまったりというのがありがちなんですけど，彩度があまり低くなりすぎず，かつ撮影処理的にあまりギラギラさせないという方向性で大野さんに上品にまとめていただいた。</span></strong> <a href="#f-335e2ee4" id="fn-335e2ee4" name="fn-335e2ee4" title="第1話オーディオコメンタリより。">*3</a></p> </blockquote> <p><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">要するに，処理に頼らず</span><strong style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">「画の力」</strong><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">を信じるということだ。作画と美術の“素材”の力を信じ，あくまでも細部の繊細な撮影処理に留める。伏原の粋な表現を借りれば，処理が「薄化粧」でも「もとの素材が別嬪さんやったらよくなる」。<a href="#f-bd370c76" id="fn-bd370c76" name="fn-bd370c76" title="「薄化粧」は伏原独自の表現。ちなみに彼女が撮影を手がけた『Sonny Boy』Blu-rayの特典映像でも同じ表現をしている。">*4</a> これが本作の画作りの基本方針として斎藤監督らが至った結論だった。</span></p> <p>アニメ『フリーレン』は，この「小川に浮かぶフリーレン」を1つのレファレンス・ポイントとし，<strong>作画そのものの存在感</strong>を前面に押し出した画作りがなされていくことになる。そして本作の水底に流れるテーマに鑑みた時，この方針は大きな意味を持つことになる。</p> <p> </p> <h4 id="実在">実在</h4> <p>少し先の話数に飛んで，ここで<strong>「#07 おとぎ話のようなもの」</strong>の2つのシーンを思い出そう。</p> <p>アバンの回想シーンで，アイゼンは大魔法使いフランメを「おとぎ話のようなものだ」と言う。それに対しフリーレンは「おとぎ話か。そうだね。それだけの年月が経った。あの人の顔を覚えているのはたぶん私だけだ…」と答える。ここでまず「おとぎ話」という<strong>キャラクター存在の〈仮構性〉</strong>が定立される。</p> <p>これに対して反定立を成すのが，Aパートで示されるもう1つの回想シーンだ。フリーレンに自分の像を頻繁に建てていることを疑問に思われたヒンメルは，「君が未来で一人ぼっちにならないようにするため」と説明した後，こう言い添える。</p> <blockquote> <p><strong><span style="font-size: 80%;">おとぎ話じゃない。僕達は確かに実在したんだ。</span></strong></p> </blockquote> <p>ヒンメルが口にしたこの「実在」という言葉は，フリーレンというキャラクターにとっても，『フリーレン』という作品にとっても，決定的な意味を持つ言葉だ。ヒンメル亡き後，彼らとの旅は「おとぎ話」という〈仮構性〉ではなく，紛れもない<strong>〈実在〉</strong>としてフリーレンの記憶の中に都度呼び込まれることになる。それはどれだけ年月を経ようとも，“今ここ”にいるフリーレンの中で，<strong>はっきりとした輪郭を保ちながら現前してくる〈実在〉</strong>である。フリーレンはヒンメルたちの過去の「実在」をフェルンやシュタルクの現在の「実在」に重ね合わせることによって，「人を知る」という目的を漸進的に叶えていく。</p> <p>上図左は地のカット，中と右は回想カットである。この回想では，画面の周辺にボカシを入れるなど，回想に入ったことを記号的に示す処理がなされている。止め絵ということもあり，誇張された歴史画のような趣すら感じられる。</p> title="地のカットと回想のカットをオーバーラップさせている個所はあるが，それは地のカット同士の繋ぎでもなされている処理である。">*5</a> キャラクターは止め絵ではなく，地のシーンと同様に生き生きとした芝居をしている。実はマンガ原作ではトーンを用いたり，コマ枠を黒くしたりなど，比較的わかりやすい“回想記号”が用いられているのだが，アニメではその類の符牒をまったく使っていない。</p> <p>撮影効果を抑えることで，作画と芝居そのものに視聴者のフォーカスを合わせ，そこに<strong>キャラクターの実像を浮かび上がらせる</strong>。それは，ヒンメルたちの<strong>「実在」</strong>を“回想”というソフトフォーカスで希薄にする（斎藤監督曰く「ボヤッと」させる）のではなく，<strong>フリーレンにとっての“今ここ”で価値を持つ存在として「瑞々しく」現前させる</strong>ということと正確に対応しているように思える。それこそが，本作の描こうとした「実在」のあり方なのかもしれない。<span style="font-size: 100%;"><a href="#f-d0b5cabd" id="fn-d0b5cabd" name="fn-d0b5cabd" title="もちろん撮影処理をまったく施していないわけではなく，キャラクターと背景とを馴染ませるなどの基本的な処理はなされている。また斎藤監督によれば「画面のノイジーな質感や若干入っている色収差など伏原さんの味が繊細に出ている」とのことである。">*6</a></span></p> <p>これらのエピソードで示されているのは，単なる過去の回想というより，<strong>過去が今ここにおいて意味を持つという意味での〈現前〉</strong>である。それはアニメーションと物語の両方のレベルにおいて美しく形を成し，<strong>ヒンメルの「実在」</strong>という想い，<strong>フリーレンの「人間を知る」</strong>という願いと共鳴していくことになる。</p> <p>しかし，人が他者の中に現前するためには，必ずしも大きな偉業を成し遂げる必要はない。このことは本作のテーマにとって最も重要な点だ。<strong>「#22 次からは敵同士」</strong>には，フリーレンとヒンメルの回想シーンが挿入されている。フリーレンがヒンメルに「なんで人助けをするの？」と問う。</p> <figure class="figure-image <p>アクションシーンでは，フリーレン，フェルン，魔族らの魔法による飛行や，シュタルクらの膂力による跳躍など，ファンタジー作品らしい<strong>浮揚運動</strong>が強調された作画が披露される。キャラクターは物理法則を無視して縦横無尽に宙を舞い，強力な力で敵や周囲の事物を破壊する。<strong>岩澤亨</strong>のスタイリッシュなアクション作画が随所で場面を盛り上げる。</p> <p>一方で，本作ではアクションシーンの前後に必ずと言っていいほど<strong>日常シーン</strong>が描かれている。キャラクターは地に足を付け，重力に従って行動し，建物や調度品など周囲の環境に合わせて行動する。彼らはいわば<strong>〈世界内存在〉として日常世界の中に穏やかに定位</strong>する。</p> <p>もちろん，こうしたアクションと日常の交代は，それ自体としては目新しいものではない。しかし『フリーレン』で特筆すべきは，それが作画そのものの「実在」感に基づいて，この上なく丁寧に作られている点である。とりわけ，<strong>日常における〈世界内存在〉的な振る舞いを具に描いたこと</strong>こそが，本作アニメ化の最大の功績と言っても過言ではない。</p> <p>フリーレンが部屋の扉を開ける際，落ちそうになる荷物を支え直してから中に入る。物語の進行上はまったく不要な芝居だが，実に丁寧に描写されている（もちろんマンガ原作にはこの描写はない）。種﨑の呼吸の芝居もとてもいい。</p> <p>もう1つは<strong>「#06 村の英雄」</strong>Bパート，バーでフェルンがシュタルクの隣に着座するカットだ。</p> <div <p>椅子を引き，外衣を押さえながら着座し，椅子を前に引く。当たり前のように見える動作の中に，フェルンの几帳面さや慎重さといった内面が伺えるいいカットだ。</p> <p>日常風景だからいいというわけではない。作画がリアルだからいいというわけでもない。まして使用枚数が多いからいいというわけでも決してない。これらのシーンが卓越しているのは，キャラ（クター）が椅子，扉，荷物といった<strong>日常の用具と共演し，それらに作用すると同時に作用される様が丁寧に描かれている</strong>からである。そして重力を無視した戦闘アクションの〈浮揚〉感が前後に描かれているからこそ，それとの差異において，重力に従った日常の〈定位〉感が際立つのだ。</p> <p>しかし一度試験が終了すると，彼ら／彼女らは日常風景の中にごく自然に定位し，日常的な営みを見せる。特に<strong>「#22 次からは敵同士」</strong>では，つい先程までライバル同士だった受験者たちが一つ屋根の下で食事をし，女子会さながらの朗らかなトークに興じる様子が微笑ましい。実に本作らしい，ミニマルな日常風景の描写である。</p> <p>ちなみにこうした日常シーンの描写では，<strong>〈重力〉</strong>という要素が重要な役割を演じる。アクションシーンでは魔法や超人的な膂力によって見えなくされていた万有引力の法則が，日常芝居ではむしろ世界内存在的な芝居に作用する因子として顕在化する。いくつか例を観てみよう。</p> <p><strong>「#12 本物の勇者」</strong>Bパートにおけるフリーレンの日常芝居はとても面白い。フェルンにシュタルクへの誕生日プレゼントのことを問われたフリーレンは，旅行鞄の中にしまった「服だけ溶かす薬」を自慢する。</p> <div class="images-row mceNonEditable"> <div class="images-row-item"><img <p>日本のアニメは（そしてもちろん世界のアニメも）その黎明期から常に<strong>〈重力〉という下方向の力の表現</strong>と格闘してきた。〈重力〉に則った日常芝居を作画するにせよ，〈重力〉に抗う架空の力を描くにせよ，〈重力〉をまったく意識することなくアニメーションを作ることは，不可能とまでは言わずとも，極めて困難だ。『フリーレン』というアニメは，魔法による〈浮揚〉の非日常性を描くことによって，逆照射的に〈重力〉の日常性を際立たせているようにも思える。〈浮揚〉＝アクションがスタイリッシュに描かれているからこそ，それとの対比で〈重力〉＝日常芝居の素朴な繊細さが際立ち，日常芝居が際立つからこそ，キャクターたちの「実在」が克明に浮き上がってくる。換言すれば，〈重力〉という下方向の力がこの世界の日常の営みを支えているのだ。</p> <p>普段はあまり多くを語らないアイゼンだが，ここでは勇者一行との旅の思い出を饒舌に語る。それを聞いて大はしゃぎする幼い日のシュタルク。彼の肩には，親密な重石のようにアイゼンの手が乗せられている。<strong>アイゼンの重心の低い優しさが，ふわふわと浮遊しそうなシュタルクを地に繋ぎ止めようとしている</strong>かのように見える。勇者一行の旅が「おとぎ話」ではなく，確かに「実在」していたことをノンバーバルに伝えようとしているようにも見える。さりげなく挿入されたシーンだが，本作の本質をよく表した画である。</p> <p>さて，このように描かれる<strong>〈日常への定位〉</strong>は，フリーレンというキャラクターにとってどんな意味を持つだろうか。彼女の師匠，フランメの言葉がヒントになるかもしれない。</p> <p><strong>「#21 魔法の世界」</strong>Aパートでは，フリーレンがゼーリエに初めて拝謁する様子が回想シーンとして描かれる。フリーレンの途方もない強さを一目で見抜いたゼーリエは，「望む魔法」を授けることを提案する。しかしフリーレンはその申し出を「魔法は探し求めている時が一番楽しいんだよ」と言って断る。</p> <blockquote> <div><strong><span style="font-size: <p>フリーレンは卓越した魔法使いであり，魔王討伐の立役者だが，同時に<strong>「平和な時代の魔法使い」</strong>でもある。だからこそ彼女の物語は魔王討伐後から始まるのであり，だからこそ彼女の柔らかいキャラは日常芝居の中で活きるのである。彼女の身体は，「野心」の名の下に戦闘魔法の開発・習得に明け暮れるのではなく，常に日常の営みの中に定位している。たとえそれがどれほど「くだらない」日常だとしても。そのことを師匠フランメの慧眼は見抜いていたということになる。</p> <p> </p> <h4 id="くだらないという価値">「くだらない」という価値</h4> <p>フリーレンの中に〈実在〉として現前する「勇者一行」の姿は，聖人君子でも崇高な英雄でもない。それは勇者の剣を抜けなかった心優しいナルシストであり，酒を食らってばかりいる愉快な生臭坊主であり，敵を前に震えを隠せない強き臆病者である。そんな矮小な身の丈の彼らの世界内には，<strong>「くだらない」</strong>という価値が無数に散りばめられている。</p> <p><strong>「#06 村の英雄」</strong>Aパート，シュタルクが紅鏡竜を倒した後，フリーレンは巣の中にある宝を漁り始める。その様子を見たシュタルクは「本当にくだらねぇな。こんな物に夢中になれるのか。［…］師匠はお前のせいで勇者一行の冒険がくだらない旅になったって言ってたぜ」と腐す。フリーレンの奇異な行動にさぞかし不満なのかと思いきや，彼は直後にこう言い添える。</p> <blockquote> <div <p>ヒンメルは勇者パーティを結成するはるか以前，まだ幼少の頃にフリーレンと出会っていた。森の中で迷い孤独に震えるヒンメルに，フリーレンは何も言わずに「花畑を出す魔法」を使ってやる。この時の優しく誇らしげに花畑を見やるフリーレンの表情が印象的だ。そしてこの出来事が，その後ヒンメルがフリーレンを勇者一行に勧誘したきっかけとなる。</p> <blockquote> <div <p>「魔法が“強い”と思った」という認識ではなく，「魔法が“綺麗だ”と思った」という感情。綺麗な魔法を使える人に冒険の仲間になってもらいたいという想い。これこそがヒンメルとフリーレンを結ぶ力となる。</p> <p><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">フリーレンと同様，間違いなくヒンメルも「平和な時代の勇者」なのだ。そしてフリーレンと共にかき氷ではしゃぐハイターも「平和な時代の僧侶」であり，フリーレンとの旅を「楽しかった」と述懐するアイゼンも「平和な時代の戦士」なのだ。『ドラクエ』に興じる小学生のようにダンジョン攻略を楽しめる彼らだからこそ，冒険を日常として楽しめる彼らだからこそ，平和な世界をリアルにイメージし，それを実現することができたのかもしれない。そう，本当の魔法は「イメージの世界」なのだ。</span></p> 100%;">『フリーレン』において，「花畑を出す魔法」は「くだらない」価値の象徴だ。しかしくだらないにもかかわらず，あるいはくだらないからこそ，この魔法は人と人との想いを繋ぐ間主観的な力を持っている。事実，ゼーリエの庭園の花畑は「花畑を出す魔法」で作られたものだ。</span></div> </div> <p><strong>「#02 別に魔法じゃなくたって…」</strong>Bパート，フリーレンは「花畑を出す魔法」を使ってヒンメルの銅像の周りを彼の故郷の花「蒼月草」で満たしてやろうとする。蒼月草はすでに絶滅しているとされているが，フリーレンは諦めずに丹念に捜索する。やがて彼女は廃墟となった塔の上で蒼月草の群生を発見する。</p> <div class="images-row mceNonEditable"> <div <p>花弁を優しく撫でるフリーレンの手が細やかなアニメーションで描かれている。その手の芝居には，ヒンメルとの「くだらない」思い出を慈しむフリーレンの想いが溢れているようだ。ゾルトラークで多くの魔物を「葬送」してきたのと同じ手とは思えないほど，優しい慈愛に満ちた手である。ひょっとすると「花畑を出す魔法」には，対象となる花の生体データだけでなく，その花にまつわる想いの現前が必要なのかもしれない。そんなことを思わせる美しいカットである。</p> <p> </p> <h4 id="箱庭の中へ">箱庭の中へ</h4> <p>言うまでもないことだが，この作品における<strong>「葬送」</strong>という言葉には2つの意味がある。</p> <p>一つは，リュグナーの言うようにフリーレンが「歴史上で最も多くの魔族を葬り去った」という意味だ。もう一つは，彼女がこれまでの長い年月の中で，数多くの人々を弔ってきたという意味である。</p> <p>エルフの永遠に近い寿命から見れば，人間世界の営みは早回しにされたおもちゃ箱のように見えることだろう。<strong>箱庭</strong>の中を覗き込むような視点と言ってもいいかもしれない。彼女の悠久の時を尺度にした時，人間の生は相対的に短く矮小で儚く見える。しかし短く矮小で儚いからこそ，そこで紡がれるガラクタのようにくだらない生の営みがかけがえのないものに見えてくる。そしてこの作品の主人公がフリーレンであるが故に，我々視聴者の時間感覚は自然，フリーレンの時間感覚に調律されることになる。いくつかの場面で，時間経過を点描するシーンが描かれるが，これもフリーレンの時間感覚を縮約したものと見ることもできるだろう。</p> <p>この時フリーレンは，自分がフェルンの喜ぶ姿を見て喜んでいることに気づく。彼女はいわば〈喜びの間主観性〉の中に身を置いている。人は他者の喜びを喜ぶことができる。これは「人を知るための旅」の途上にあるフリーレンにとって，一つの小さな発見である。</p> <p>このシーンに対応するのが，「一級魔法使い試験編」の第二次試験である。</p> <p><strong>「#23 迷宮攻略」</strong> <p>壁画を見て感動するフェルン。それを見て微笑むフリーレン。「新年祭の日の出」の場面と同様，他者の喜びを喜ぶフリーレンの様子が繊細な表情芝居によって表現されている。</p> <p>エルフであるフリーレンは，時間感覚も価値観も人間のそれとは異なるものを持っているはずだ。しかし彼女は勇者一行との旅において，そしてフェルンやシュタルクたちとの旅において，<strong>自らの琴線を人間のそれに合わせて調弦し，共に喜び共に笑い合う関係性</strong>を築きつつある。フリーレンにとっての「人を知る」とは，そうした豊かな心のアンサンブルを編成するということなのだろう。ガラクタを見て喜んでしまうような，ミニマルだがポジティブな感情によって「平和な時代」を彩ることなのだろう。<a href="#f-2ad85901" id="fn-2ad85901" name="fn-2ad85901" title="この点において，フリーレンの「人を知る」は後に登場する魔族マハトの「人を知る」とまったく異なる。マハトは「悪意」や「罪悪感」という負の感情で人を知ろうとするが故に，間主観的な関係を築くことができず，人を傷つけることしかできない。">*9</a></p> <p>低い位置に置かれたカメラが，馬車ナメで一人旅に出るフリーレンの後ろ姿を捉える。カメラがゆっくりとクレーンアップすると，遠景の丘が眼前に広がる。</p> <p>このカットは「密着引き」と呼ばれる方法で作られている。密着引き（密着マルチなどとも）とは，複数のセルを異なる速度でスライドさせて立体感を出す方法だ。<a href="#f-5e648749" id="fn-5e648749" name="fn-5e648749" title="フィルム時代には相互に密着させたセルを引いたことからこう呼ばれている。">*10</a> 斎藤監督はこのカットのワークに関し，「BGを密着で引くだけで感動してしまう。止め絵がダイナミックに引かれるだけで心が動く瞬間がある」と言っている。<a href="#f-969def26" id="fn-969def26" <p>巨大な橋の上を歩くフリーレン，フェルン，シュタルクをフカンで捉えたカメラがクレーンアップし，やがて彼らの目の前に広がる大自然をフレームに収める。ここでは密着引きのような技巧は用いられていない。「#01」のワークと比べるとはるかにシンプルだが，シンプルであるが故に，ある種の感情をストレートに伝えているようにも思える。</p> <p>カメラがクレーンアップしたことにより，彼らの姿は豆粒のように小さくなっていく。まるで箱庭の中の人形のように。しかしその中には，フリーレン自身の姿もあるのだ。「#01」のカットとは違い，フリーレンはもはや1人ではない。彼女はフェルンとシュタルクという旅の道連れを得て，箱庭という間主観的な関係性の中に身を置きながら，「人を知るための旅」を続けていくのだ。</p> <p>このラストカットにおける〈感情〉の正体は何だろうか。おそらくそれは，別離の寂寥感のような大きな感情のうねりではないだろう。それよりももっと<strong>ミニマルで，日常的で，「くだらない」感情</strong>に近いのかもしれない。</p> <p>だから最後にフリーレンは，ヒンメルの思い出と共にこう言うのだ。</p> <blockquote> <p><strong><span
