Ce schéma laisse entrevoir à la fois la cohérence de l’entité Cayla-Traversant en tant que noyau central de l’habitat protohistorique mailhacois ainsi que la complémentarité entre ce pôle et des Celles-ci permettent d’établir la courte durée de cette installation (seconde moitié du Ve s. et trois premiers quarts du IVe s. av. J.-C.) et d’en préciser la forme, la culture matérielle et l’économie vivrière de ses habitants, ainsi que la circulation des marchandises. Toutes ces données montrent que, malgré une situation sur la bordure des Cévennes, cet habitat participe pleinement de la sphère des Garrigues du Languedoc oriental. Abstract - The cevenol La Madeleine hilltop settlement was discovered in 1977 and was excavated in 1977 and 1980. These investigations allowed us to establish that the village existed for a short length of time (second half of the Vth century and three first quarters of the IVth century BC) and to specify its development, the material culture and subsistence activities of its residents, as well as the transport of merchandise. Les investigations archéologiques ont permis de mettre au jour des vestiges d'habitats datant de la fin de l'âge du Bronze ou du début du premier âge du Fer, de l'Antiquité gallo-romaine et du haut Moyen Âge. Parmi les structures les plus anciennes, mentionnons un silo (comportant de nombreux éléments de céramique, de torchis et des graines carbonisées) et un fosse dite « en Y » qui serait une fosse-piège à gibier. À la transition entre la fin de l'Antiquité et le premier Moyen Âge, deux petits fours pourraient avoir servi à cuire de la céramique. Le premier (ST 1289), assez bien conservé et construit exclusivement avec des fragments de tuiles, comporte un laboratoire circulaire (1 m de diamètre externe), les restes d'une sole perforée, et un alandier d'un mètre de long. Le second (ST 701) est très lacunaire. Son laboratoire, construit en tuiles et en petits blocs calcaire est quadrangulaire (un peu plus d'un mètre de côté), avec un alandier de 1,60 m de long. Leurs comblements d'abandon, ainsi que leurs abords, comportent un important lot de céramique comportant des stigmates de cuisson (près de 6500 tessons, pour un poids total dépassant 85 kg, au sein desquels de nombreux éléments sont fissurés, desquamés ou déformés). Celui-ci est constitué, entre autres, de fragments de pots globulaires standardisés, de coupes à carène souvent décorées à la molette, de marmites à suspension... Ces éléments sont datés typologiquement de la fin du V e ou du début du VI e siècle. Cette fourchette chronologique est confirmée par deux datations par thermoluminescence. De nombreux restes de tuiles de couverture sont associés aux rejets céramiques et portent les mêmes stigmates : déformation, gonflement, fissuration. Les deux fours de potier ont donc manifestement été employés à la cuisson de terres cuites architecturales, malgré leurs très petites tailles, à moins que d'autres fours, non conservés ou hors emprise, aient existés. Quelques autres structures (TP, fosses), réparties sur le secteur central de fouille, ont livré de petits lots de céramique de la même période, sans que l'on puisse savoir si elles sont liées à l'atelier de potier/tuilier ou si le mobilier qu'elles comportent est résiduel. L'occupation de la deuxième moitié du haut Moyen Âge (VIII e -XI e s.) consiste en un habitat rural assez vaste structuré notamment par plusieurs longs fossés parallèles d'axe sud-ouest - nord-est. On constate plusieurs concentrations de trous de poteaux (vestiges de bâtiments en terre et bois dont les plans sont très peu lisibles) et de silos qui témoignent, soit de la multi-polarisation de l'habitat, soit du déplacement de celui-ci sur de courtes distances, au cours de la période. Sept fours sont également dispersés sur les secteurs 2 et 3. La plupart s'apparente à des fours domestiques, probablement destinés à cuire le pain ou à griller les céréales. Ils sont creusés en sape dans le substrat sableux et comportent des soles constituées de limon ou construites avec des fragments de tegulae). Le four du secteur 3 (ST 331), qui se distingue des autres, notamment pas sa profondeur serait un nouveau petit four de potier. Il a livré 679 tessons témoignant d'une production très standardisée de pots et de cruches semblables à ceux consommés à Blois entre le IX e et le début du X e s. Trois puits, situés côte-à-côte, ont été fouillés intégralement. Ils sont peu profonds (moins de 3 m) et cylindriques.
