record encounters. They are shown to enhance the accuracy of documentation in virtually every situation. They are not widely used in medical encounters in part because of concern for patient acceptance. The goal of this pilot study was to determine if BWC use is acceptable to the patient. This was a prospective, observational study of the AXON Flex BWC (TASER International, Scottsdale, AZ) conducted at an urban, Level 1 Trauma Center Emergency Department (ED). The BWC was worn by Emergency Physicians (EPs) on their shifts during a 30-day period. The BWC was worn at eye-level mounted on a pair of clear safety glasses. Patients seen by the EP were enrolled in the study by a trained research associate. Patients who were <18 years old, who were with other people in the exam room, did not speak English, were critically ill, had chief complaints involving genitalia or sexual assault, were considered to be vulnerable adults, or with an altered mental status were excluded. Consented patients were given a survey after the encounter to determine their perception of the BWC. The questions asked involved the patients’ perceptions of a BWC being present during their interaction with their EP. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics. There were 417 patients enrolled in the study. 3/417 (0.7%) patients were intimidated by the BWC, 1/417 (0.2%) was nervous because of the BWC, 0/417 (0%) were inhibited from telling the EP certain things because of the BWC, 57/417 (13.7%) patients did not notice the device, and 305/417 (73.1%) patients were had a favorable perception about the BWC being used during their encounter. The use of BWCs appears feasible in the ED, with largely favorable perceptions and acceptance of the device by the patients. Further study is needed to determine the best use and practices of BWCs during ED patient encounters. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=body-worn%20camera" title="body-worn camera">body-worn camera</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=documentation" title=" documentation"> documentation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=patient%20satisfaction" title=" patient satisfaction"> patient satisfaction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=video" title=" video"> video</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/57078/body-worn-camera-use-in-the-emergency-department-patient-and-provider-satisfaction" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/57078.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">373</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">59</span> Introduction of Artificial Intelligence for Estimating Fractal Dimension and Its Applications in the Medical Field</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zerroug%20Abdelhamid">Zerroug Abdelhamid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Chassoux"> Danielle Chassoux</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Various models are given to simulate homogeneous or heterogeneous cancerous tumors and extract in each case the boundary. Conceptual metaphors in songs often compare women to objects (objects that are fragile and breakable or primarily of monetary value) and animals. Many common conceptual metaphors in music refer to women as less than sovereign, rational humans, implying that women should be owned, controlled, and used. These comparisons are harmful because music is so influential and has the ability to create and perpetuate stereotypes. By examining the lyrics of the popular songs: Bob Dylan’s “Just like a woman,” Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” (written by Marvin Gaye), and Chris Brown’s “Fine China,” we can discern subtle ways in which misogynistic language has become so imbedded into popular culture. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=conceptual%20metaphors" title="conceptual metaphors">conceptual metaphors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=women%20studies" title=" women studies"> women studies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=feminism" title=" feminism"> feminism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lyrics" title=" lyrics"> lyrics</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/157125/harmful-conceptual-metaphors-for-women-in-popular-songs" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/157125.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">94</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">55</span> The Culture of Extrajudicial Executions: An Investigative Study of the Philippines’ Fifth Republic </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nathalie%20Quinto">Nathalie Quinto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Solancho"> Danielle Solancho</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In 1986, after Marcos’ Martial Law of 1972, the Philippines revised its constitution for the fifth time, under the Aquino Administration. Extrajudicial violence was expected to be lessened, if not completely eradicated after this was passed. However, state-sponsored executions continued to persist even in the present time. There are currently identified policy gaps when it comes to extrajudicial cases, as there is no generally accepted definition of the term in the Philippines. In this paper, a triangulation method of historically published papers, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions of academics, scholars, and people who are involved in various cases found, was utilized for the methodology. This paper explores the establishment of a normalized system of state-sponsored executions in the country and why the state resorts to this kind of action. It found that due to a weak political, and social institution, a culture of extrajudicial executions was established. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=extrajudicial%20execution" title="extrajudicial execution">extrajudicial execution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20rights" title=" human rights"> human rights</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=justice" title=" justice"> justice</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=security" title=" security"> security</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92870/the-culture-of-extrajudicial-executions-an-investigative-study-of-the-philippines-fifth-republic" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92870.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">265</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">54</span> Interbank Networks and the Benefits of Using Multilayer Structures </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Sandler%20dos%20Passos">Danielle Sandler dos Passos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Helder%20Coelho"> Helder Coelho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fl%C3%A1via%20Mori%20Sarti"> Flávia Mori Sarti</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Complexity science seeks the understanding of systems adopting diverse theories from various areas. Network analysis has been gaining space and credibility, namely with the biological, social and economic systems. Significant part of the literature focuses only monolayer representations of connections among agents considering one level of their relationships, and excludes other levels of interactions, leading to simplistic results in network analysis. Therefore, this work aims to demonstrate the advantages of the use of multilayer networks for the representation and analysis of networks. For this, we analyzed an interbank network, composed of 42 banks, comparing the centrality measures of the agents (degree and PageRank) resulting from each method (monolayer <em>x</em> multilayer). This proved to be the most reliable and efficient the multilayer analysis for the study of the current networks and highlighted JP Morgan and Deutsche Bank as the most important banks of the analyzed network. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=complexity" title="complexity">complexity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=interbank%20networks" title=" interbank networks"> interbank networks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multilayer%20networks" title=" multilayer networks"> multilayer networks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=network%20analysis" title=" network analysis"> network analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92811/interbank-networks-and-the-benefits-of-using-multilayer-structures" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92811.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">282</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">53</span> Reproductive Behavior of Caspian Red Deer (Cervus Elaphus Maral) in Wildlife Refuge of Semeskande, Sari</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Behrang%20Ekrami">Behrang Ekrami</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amin%20Tamadon"> Amin Tamadon </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Caspian red deer or maral (Cervus elaphus maral) is a ruminant from the family of Cervidae. Maintenance and protection of maral requires knowing the behavioral, physiological, environmental characteristics and factors harmful to this species. In this article, reproductive and behavioral traits of this species in both sexes are presented based on observations and the available records of protected deer in Wildlife Refuge of Semeskande, Sari (one of the sites that preserve the maral in the Free Zones of Hyrcanian forest) from 2006 to 2011. Hart characteristics including sexual behavior, apparent changes during reproductive season and reproductive physiology; and hind characteristics including of ovulation, reproductive cycle, mating, pregnancy and parturition, have been evaluated. Identification of maral reproductive characteristics in Wildlife Refuge of Semeskande, Sari is one of the most important information requirements to preserve and breed this species and will open up new routes for performing new methods of reproduction of this species in Iran wildlife parks or other refuge areas. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=caspian%20red%20deer" title="caspian red deer">caspian red deer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reproduction" title=" reproduction"> reproduction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=behavior" title=" behavior"> behavior</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Iran" title=" Iran"> Iran</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/18170/reproductive-behavior-of-caspian-red-deer-cervus-elaphus-maral-in-wildlife-refuge-of-semeskande-sari" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/18170.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">489</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">52</span> Should the U.S. Rely on Drone Strikes to Combat the Islamic State? It breaks down the legality of drone strikes under international law and dissects certain aspects of their usage in modern warfare; i.e. concepts of directly participating in hostilities and the role of CIA operators. The article then looks at international paradigms of law enforcement versus the use of military force in relation to terrorism. Lastly, it describes traditional aspects of Islamic law and several interpretations of the law today as applied to widespread campaigns of terrorism, namely that of the recent group ISIS or ISIL operating between the battlegrounds of Iraq and Syria. The piece concludes with appraisals for moving forward on the basis of honing in on reasons for terrorism and negative opinions of solely military campaigns to dismantle or disrupt terror organizations and breeding grounds. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=international%20law" title="international law">international law</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=terrorism" title=" terrorism"> terrorism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ISIS" title=" ISIS"> ISIS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=islamic%20law" title=" islamic law"> islamic law</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24847/should-the-us-rely-on-drone-strikes-to-combat-the-islamic-state-why-deploying-a-drone-campaign-against-isis-will-do-nothing-to-address-the-causes-of-the-insurgency-or-prevent-its-resurgence" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24847.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">475</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">51</span> In vitro Bioacessibility of Phenolic Compounds from Fruit Spray Dried and Lyophilized Powder</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carolina%20Beres">Carolina Beres</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laurine%20Da%20Silva"> Laurine Da Silva</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Pereira"> Danielle Pereira</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ana%20Ribeiro"> Ana Ribeiro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Renata%20Tonon"> Renata Tonon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Caroline%20Mellinger-Silva"> Caroline Mellinger-Silva</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karina%20Dos%20Santos"> Karina Dos Santos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Flavia%20Gomes"> Flavia Gomes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lourdes%20Cabral"> Lourdes Cabral</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The health benefits of bioactive compounds such as phenolics are well known. For this purpose both characterized extracts were submitted to a simulated human digestion and the total phenolic content, total anthocyanins and antioxidant scavenging capacity was determinate in digestive fractions (oral, gastric, intestinal and colonic). Juçara had a higher anthocianins bioacessibility (17.16%) when compared to grape pomace (2.08%). The opposite result was found for total phenolic compound, where the higher bioacessibility was for grape (400%). The phenolic compound increase indicates a more accessible compound in the human gut. The lyophilized process had a beneficial impact in the final accessibility of the phenolic compounds being a more promising technique. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bioacessibility" title="bioacessibility">bioacessibility</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phenolic%20compounds" title=" phenolic compounds"> phenolic compounds</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=grape" title=" grape"> grape</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ju%C3%A7ara" title=" juçara"> juçara</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95136/in-vitro-bioacessibility-of-phenolic-compounds-from-fruit-spray-dried-and-lyophilized-powder" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95136.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">213</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">50</span> On the Importance of Quality, Liquidity Level and Liquidity Risk: A Markov-Switching Regime Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tarik%20Bazgour">Tarik Bazgour</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cedric%20Heuchenne"> Cedric Heuchenne</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Sougne"> Danielle Sougne</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> We examine time variation in the market beta of portfolios sorted on quality, liquidity level and liquidity beta characteristics across stock market phases. Using US stock market data for the period 1970-2010, we find, first, the US stock market was driven by four regimes. Second, during the crisis regime, low (high) quality, high (low) liquidity beta and illiquid (liquid) stocks exhibit an increase (a decrease) in their market betas. This finding is consistent with the flight-to-quality and liquidity phenomena. Third, we document the same pattern across stocks when the market volatility is low. We argue that, during low volatility times, investors shift their portfolios towards low quality and illiquid stocks to seek portfolio gains. The pattern observed in the tranquil regime can be, therefore, explained by a flight-to-low-quality and to illiquidity. Finally, our results reveal that liquidity level is more important than liquidity beta during the crisis regime. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=financial%20crises" title="financial crises">financial crises</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quality" title=" quality"> quality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=liquidity" title=" liquidity"> liquidity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=liquidity%20risk" title=" liquidity risk"> liquidity risk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=regime-switching%20models" title=" regime-switching models"> regime-switching models</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16128/on-the-importance-of-quality-liquidity-level-and-liquidity-risk-a-markov-switching-regime-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16128.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">404</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">49</span> Measuring Banks’ Antifragility via Fuzzy Logic</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Sandler%20dos%20Passos">Danielle Sandler dos Passos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Helder%20Coelho"> Helder Coelho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fl%C3%A1via%20Mori%20Sarti"> Flávia Mori Sarti</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Analysing the world banking sector, we realize that traditional risk measurement methodologies no longer reflect the actual scenario with uncertainty and leave out events that can change the dynamics of markets. Considering this, regulators and financial institutions began to search more realistic models. The aim is to include external influences and interdependencies between agents, to describe and measure the operationalization of these complex systems and their risks in a more coherent and credible way. Within this context, X-Events are more frequent than assumed and, with uncertainties and constant changes, the concept of antifragility starts to gain great prominence in comparison to others methodologies of risk management. It is very useful to analyse whether a system succumbs (fragile), resists (robust) or gets benefits (antifragile) from disorder and stress. Thus, this work proposes the creation of the Banking Antifragility Index (BAI), which is based on the calculation of a triangular fuzzy number – to "quantify" qualitative criteria linked to antifragility. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adaptive%20complex%20systems" title="adaptive complex systems">adaptive complex systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=X-Events" title=" X-Events"> X-Events</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=risk%20management" title=" risk management"> risk management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antifragility" title=" antifragility"> antifragility</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=banking%20antifragility%20index" title=" banking antifragility index"> banking antifragility index</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=triangular%20fuzzy%20number" title=" triangular fuzzy number"> triangular fuzzy number</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/94029/measuring-banks-antifragility-via-fuzzy-logic" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/94029.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">183</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">48</span> Perspectives and Outcomes of a Long and Shorter Community Mental Health Program</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Klassen">Danielle Klassen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Reiko%20Yeap"> Reiko Yeap</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Margo%20Schmitt-Boshnick"> Margo Schmitt-Boshnick</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Scott%20Oddie"> Scott Oddie</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The development of the 7-week Alberta Happiness Basics program was initiated in 2010 in response to the need for community mental health programming. This provincial wide program aims to increase overall happiness and reduce negative thoughts and feelings through a positive psychology intervention. While the 7-week program has proven effective, a shortened 4-week program has additionally been developed to address client needs. In this study, participants were interviewed to determine if the 4- and 7-week programs had similar success of producing lasting behavior change at 3, 6, and 9 months post-program. A health quality of life (HQOL) measure was also used to compare the two programs and examine patient outcomes. Quantitative and qualitative analysis showed significant improvements in HQOL and sustainable behavior change for both programs. Findings indicate that the shorter, patient-centered program was effective in increasing happiness and reducing negative thoughts and feelings. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=primary%20care" title="primary care">primary care</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mental%20health" title=" mental health"> mental health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=depression" title=" depression"> depression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=short%20duration" title=" short duration"> short duration</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74831/perspectives-and-outcomes-of-a-long-and-shorter-community-mental-health-program" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/74831.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">270</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">47</span> Bakla Po Ako (I Am Gay): A Case Study on the Communication Styles of Selected Filipino Gays in Disclosing Their Sexual Orientation to Their Parents</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bryan%20Christian%20Baybay"> Bryan Christian Baybay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20Francesca%20Ronario"> M. The participants were selected through purposive sampling and snowball technique. The theories, Rhetorical Sensitivity of Roderick Hart and Communicator Style of Robert Norton were used to analyze the gathered data and to give support to the communication attitudes, message processing, message rendering and communication styles exhibited in each disclosure. As secondary data and validation, parents and experts in the field of communication, sociology, and psychology were also interviewed and consulted. The study found that Filipino gays vary in the communication styles they use during the disclosure with their parents. All communication styles: impression-leaving, contentious, open, dramatic, dominant, precise, relaxed, friendly, animated, and communicator image were observed by the gays depending on their motivation, relationship and thoughts contemplated. These results lend ideas for future researchers to look into the communication patterns and/or styles of lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and queers or expand researches on the same subject and the utilization of Social Judgment and Relational Dialectics theories in determining and analyzing LGBTQ communication. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communication%20attitudes" title="communication attitudes">communication attitudes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communication%20styles" title=" communication styles"> communication styles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Filipino%20gays" title=" Filipino gays"> Filipino gays</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-disclosure" title=" self-disclosure"> self-disclosure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sexual%20orientation" title=" sexual orientation "> sexual orientation </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67496/bakla-po-ako-i-am-gay-a-case-study-on-the-communication-styles-of-selected-filipino-gays-in-disclosing-their-sexual-orientation-to-their-parents" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67496.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">523</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">46</span> The Use of Active Methodologies as a Means to Promote Autonomy and Motivation in English as a Foreign Language High School Students</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20%20Guerra">Danielle Guerra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marden%20Silva"> Marden Silva</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The use of active methodologies in the teaching of English has been widely encouraged recently, due to its potential to create propitious conditions for the learners to develop autonomy and studying skills that tend to keep them motivated throughout the learning process. The constant use of technology by the students makes it possible to implement strategies such as blended learning, which blends regular classes with online instruction and practice. (Horn and Staker, 2015) For that reason, the aim of this study was to implement the blended approach in a High School second-grade English class in Brazil, in order to analyze the impacts of this methodology on the students' autonomy. The teacher's role was that of a mediator, being responsible for selecting the best resources for students to study with, and also for helping them with questions when necessary. The results show that taking learner characteristics and learning experiences into account and allowing the students to follow their learning paths at their own pace was crucial to promoting engagement that led to the desired outcomes. In conclusion, the research shows that blended learning is a helpful strategy to foster autonomy and promote motivation in EFL students. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=active%20methodologies" title="active methodologies">active methodologies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autonomy" title=" autonomy"> autonomy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=blended%20learning" title=" blended learning"> blended learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=motivation" title=" motivation"> motivation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139589/the-use-of-active-methodologies-as-a-means-to-promote-autonomy-and-motivation-in-english-as-a-foreign-language-high-school-students" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139589.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">210</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">45</span> The Effect of Inhalation of Ylang-ylang Aroma on the Levels of Anxiety of Parents with Hospitalized Toddlers Diagnosed with Pneumonia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Crisostomo%20Hart%20A.">Crisostomo Hart A.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cruz%20Anna%20Cecilia%20R."> Cruz Anna Cecilia R.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cruz%20Bianca%20Isabelle%20A."> Cruz Bianca Isabelle A.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cruz%20John%20Edward%20Ligzurc%20M."> Cruz John Edward Ligzurc M.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cruz%20Mikaela%20Denise%20P."> Cruz Mikaela Denise P. </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Aim/purpose: The researchers aimed to determine the effect of Ylang-ylang aroma in decreasing the anxiety levels of parents with hospitalized toddlers diagnosed with pneumonia. Method: Quantitative Quasi-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design was utilized in the study. The study includes a pretest, an intervention, and a posttest on the same experimental group. Participants are parents aged 20 – 35 years old with a hospitalized toddler who is diagnosed with pneumonia. Anxiety levels were measured before the intervention using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory by Spielberger. Those who scored 41-120 proceeded to receive the intervention. The intervention was a 3-day course of aromatherapy where the participants inhaled the Ylang-ylang flower at a distance of 10 – 15 cm away from the face for 10 minutes. The post-test using the same instrument measured the levels of anxiety after the 3-day aromatherapy. Paired T-test of SPSS 21.0 was used to analyze the pre-test and post-test scores. Results: Study yielded a p value of 0.047 which shows significant difference between the levels of anxiety before and after the intervention. Conclusions: Based on the data analysis, the researchers concluded that inhalation of Ylang-ylang aroma is effective in reducing the anxiety level of the parents of hospitalized toddlers diagnosed with Pneumonia. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ylang-ylang" title="Ylang-ylang">Ylang-ylang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pneumonia" title=" Pneumonia"> Pneumonia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Toddlers" title=" Toddlers"> Toddlers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aromatherapy" title=" Aromatherapy"> Aromatherapy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20604/the-effect-of-inhalation-of-ylang-ylang-aroma-on-the-levels-of-anxiety-of-parents-with-hospitalized-toddlers-diagnosed-with-pneumonia" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20604.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">414</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">44</span> Psychotraumatology: The Relationship Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Criminal Justice Involvement in Vietnam War Veterans</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Page">Danielle Page</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Foregoing studies, statistics, and medical evaluations have established a relationship between Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and criminal justice involvement in Vietnam veterans. War is highly trauma inducing and can leave combat veterans with mental disorders ranging from psychopathic thoughts to suicidal ideation. The majority of those suffering are unaware that they have PTSD, and as a coping mechanism, they often turn to self isolation. Beyond isolation, many veterans with symptomatic PTSD turn to aggression and substance abuse to cope with their internal agony. The most common crimes committed by veterans with PTSD fall into the assault and drug/alcohol abuse categories. Thus, a relationship is established between veteran populations and the criminal justice system. This dissertation aims to define the relationship between PTSD and criminal justice involvement in veterans, explore the mediating factors in this relationship, and analyze numerous court cases in this subject area. Further, it will examine the ways in which crime rates can be reduced for veterans with symptoms of PTSD. This ranges from the improvement of healthcare systems to the implementation of special courts to handle veteran cases. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=psychotraumatology" title="psychotraumatology">psychotraumatology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=forensic%20psychology" title=" forensic psychology"> forensic psychology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PTSD" title=" PTSD"> PTSD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vietnam%20veterans" title=" vietnam veterans"> vietnam veterans</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/157813/psychotraumatology-the-relationship-between-posttraumatic-stress-disorder-and-criminal-justice-involvement-in-vietnam-war-veterans" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/157813.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">82</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">43</span> The Effect of Cognitively-Induced Self-Construal and Direct Behavioral Mimicry on Prosocial Behavior</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Czar%20Matthew%20Gerard%20Dayday">Czar Matthew Gerard Dayday</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Marie%20Estrera"> Danielle Marie Estrera</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Philippe%20Jefferson%20Galban"> Philippe Jefferson Galban</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gabrielle%20Marie%20Heredia"> Gabrielle Marie Heredia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The study aimed to examine the effects of self-construal and direct mimicry on prosocial behavior. Results from the experiment show that both factors do not have significant main effects on prosocial behavior. Additionally, their interaction also does not have a significant effect to prosocial behavior with No Mimicry x Independent ranking highest in amount of money donated and Mimicry x Interdependent ranking lowest. These results can be attributed to multiple factors, which include the collectivist orientation and sense of kapwa of Filipinos, a role reversal in the methodology and the lack of Chameleon Effect, and a weak priming of self-construal with respect to self-relatedness. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=behavior" title="behavior">behavior</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mimicry" title=" mimicry"> mimicry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prosocial" title=" prosocial"> prosocial</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-construal" title=" self-construal"> self-construal</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58111/the-effect-of-cognitively-induced-self-construal-and-direct-behavioral-mimicry-on-prosocial-behavior" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58111.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">278</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">42</span> Person-Environment Fit (PE Fit): Evidence from Brazil</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jucelia%20Appio">Jucelia Appio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Deimling%20De%20Carli"> Danielle Deimling De Carli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bruno%20Henrique%20Rocha%20Fernandes"> Bruno Henrique Rocha Fernandes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nelson%20Natalino%20Frizon"> Nelson Natalino Frizon</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The purpose of this paper is to investigate if there are positive and significant correlations between the dimensions of Person-Environment Fit (Person-Job, Person-Organization, Person-Group and Person-Supervisor) at the “Best Companies to Work for” in Brazil in 2017. About the data analysis procedures, asymmetry and kurtosis, factorial analysis, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) tests, Bartlett sphericity and Cronbach's alpha were used for the 69 research variables, and as a statistical technique for the purpose of analyzing the hypothesis, Pearson's correlation analysis was performed. As a main result, we highlight that there was a positive and significant correlation between the dimensions of Person-Environment Fit, corroborating the H1 hypothesis that there is a positive and significant correlation between Person-Job Fit, Person-Organization Fit, Person-Group Fit and Person-Supervisor Fit. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Human%20Resource%20Management%20%28HRM%29" title="Human Resource Management (HRM)">Human Resource Management (HRM)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Person-Environment%20Fit%20%28PE%29" title=" Person-Environment Fit (PE)"> Person-Environment Fit (PE)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strategic%20people%20management" title=" strategic people management"> strategic people management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=best%20companies%20to%20work%20for" title=" best companies to work for"> best companies to work for</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/101954/person-environment-fit-pe-fit-evidence-from-brazil" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/101954.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">141</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">41</span> The Negative Impact of the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic on Maternal and Child Health, Considering Maternal Experiences of Abuse and Neglect in Childhood</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Franziska%20K%C3%B6hler-Dauner">Franziska Köhler-Dauner</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Inka%20Mayer"> Inka Mayer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lara%20Hart"> Lara Hart</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ute%20Ziegenhain"> Ute Ziegenhain</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J%C3%B6rg%20M.%20Fegert"> Jörg M. Especially during this stressful time, children need a stable parental home to avoid developmental disorders. Additional risk factors such as maternal childhood abuse and neglect (CM) experiences may influence mothers' psychosomatic health (pG) and children's physical well-being (kW) during times of increased stress. Our aim was to analyse the interaction between maternal CM, maternal pG and children's kW during the pandemic. Mothers from a well-documented birth cohort to study transgenerational transmission of CM, were included in an online 'pandemic' survey assessing maternal pG and children's physical health during the pandemic. Our mediation analysis showed a significant positive association between the extent of maternal CM experiences, mothers' psychosomatic symptoms and their children's kW. Maternal psychosomatic symptoms significantly mediate the interaction between CM and children's kW; the direct effect remains non-significant when maternal psychosomatic symptoms are included as mediators. Maternal CM appears to be a relevant risk factor for maternal pG and children's kW during the pandemic. Maternal CM experiences seem to influence the way parents cope with stressful situations and increase the risk of suffering from depressive symptoms. The latter also affect their children's kW. Our findings underline the importance of carefully assessing the specific situation of families with children and offering individually adapted help to help families survive the pandemic. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pandemic" title="pandemic">pandemic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=maternal%20health" title=" maternal health"> maternal health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=child%20health" title=" child health"> child health</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=abuse" title=" abuse"> abuse</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neglect" title=" neglect"> neglect</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=maternal%20experiences" title=" maternal experiences"> maternal experiences</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/153921/the-negative-impact-of-the-sars-cov-2-pandemic-on-maternal-and-child-health-considering-maternal-experiences-of-abuse-and-neglect-in-childhood" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/153921.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">138</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">40</span> An Automated Approach to the Nozzle Configuration of Polycrystalline Diamond Compact Drill Bits for Effective Cuttings Removal</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=R.%20Suresh">R. Industry engineers continually improve upon PDC drill bit designs and hydraulic conditions. Optimized injection nozzles play a key role in improving the drilling performance and efficiency of these ever changing PDC drill bits. In the first part of this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling is performed to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of drilling fluid flow around the PDC drill bit. An Open-source CFD software – OpenFOAM simulates the flow around the drill bit, based on the field input data. A specifically developed console application integrates the entire CFD process including, domain extraction, meshing, and solving governing equations and post-processing. The results from the OpenFOAM solver are then compared with that of the ANSYS Fluent software. The data from both software programs agree. The second part of the paper describes the parametric study of the PDC drill bit nozzle to determine the effect of parameters such as number of nozzles, nozzle velocity, nozzle radial position and orientations on the flow field characteristics and bit washing patterns. After analyzing a series of nozzle configurations, the best configuration is identified and recommendations are made for modifying the PDC bit design. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ANSYS%20Fluent" title="ANSYS Fluent">ANSYS Fluent</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computational%20fluid%20dynamics" title=" computational fluid dynamics"> computational fluid dynamics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nozzle%20configuration" title=" nozzle configuration"> nozzle configuration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=OpenFOAM" title=" OpenFOAM"> OpenFOAM</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PDC%20dill%20bit" title=" PDC dill bit"> PDC dill bit</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/87978/an-automated-approach-to-the-nozzle-configuration-of-polycrystalline-diamond-compact-drill-bits-for-effective-cuttings-removal" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/87978.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">420</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">39</span> Regional Flood-Duration-Frequency Models for Norway</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20M.%20Barna">Danielle M. Often design flood values are needed at locations with insufficient data. Additionally, in hydrologic applications where flood retention is important (e.g., floodplain management and reservoir design), design flood values are required at different flood durations. A statistical approach to this problem is a development of a regression model for extremes where some of the parameters are dependent on flood duration in addition to being covariate-dependent. In hydrology, this is called a regional flood-duration-frequency (regional-QDF) model. Typically, the underlying statistical distribution is chosen to be the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. However, as the support of the GEV distribution depends on both its parameters and the range of the data, special care must be taken with the development of the regional model. In particular, we find that the GEV is problematic when developing a GAMLSS-type analysis due to the difficulty of proposing a link function that is independent of the unknown parameters and the observed data. We discuss these challenges in the context of developing a regional QDF model for Norway. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20flood%20values" title="design flood values">design flood values</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bayesian%20statistics" title=" bayesian statistics"> bayesian statistics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=regression%20modeling%20of%20extremes" title=" regression modeling of extremes"> regression modeling of extremes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=extreme%20value%20analysis" title=" extreme value analysis"> extreme value analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GEV" title=" GEV"> GEV</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163938/regional-flood-duration-frequency-models-for-norway" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163938.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">72</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">38</span> Comparison of Visio-spatial Intelligence Between Amateur Rugby and Netball Players Using a Hand-Eye Coordination Specific Visual Test Battery</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lourens%20Millard">Lourens Millard</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gerrit%20Jan%20Breukelman"> Gerrit Jan Breukelman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nonkululeko%20Mathe"> Nonkululeko Mathe</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Aim: The research aims to investigate the differences in visio-spatial skills (VSS) between athletes and non-athletes, as well as variations across sports, presenting conflicting findings. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine if there exist significant differences in visio-spatial intelligence skills between rugby players and netball players, and whether such disparities are present when comparing both groups to non-athletes. Methods: Participants underwent an optometric assessment, followed by an evaluation of VSS using six established tests: the Hart Near Far Rock, saccadic eye movement, evasion, accumulator, flash memory, and ball wall toss tests. Results: The results revealed that rugby players significantly outperformed netball players in speed of recognition, peripheral awareness, and hand-eye coordination (p=.000). Moreover, both rugby players and netball players performed significantly better than non-athletes in five of the six tests (p=.000), with the exception being the visual memory test (p=.809). Conclusion: This discrepancy in performance suggests that certain VSS are superior in athletes compared to non-athletes, highlighting potential implications for theories of vision, test selection, and the development of sport-specific VSS testing batteries. Furthermore, the use of a hand-eye coordination-specific VSS test battery effectively differentiated between different sports. However, this pattern was not consistent across all VSS tests, indicating that further research should explore the training methods employed by both sports, as these factors may contribute to the observed differences. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visio-spatial%20intelligence%20%28VSI%29" title="visio-spatial intelligence (VSI)">visio-spatial intelligence (VSI)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rugby%20vision" title=" rugby vision"> rugby vision</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=netball%20vision" title=" netball vision"> netball vision</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visual%20skills" title=" visual skills"> visual skills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sport%20vision." title=" sport vision."> sport vision.</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/188192/comparison-of-visio-spatial-intelligence-between-amateur-rugby-and-netball-players-using-a-hand-eye-coordination-specific-visual-test-battery" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/188192.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">51</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">37</span> Differences in Vitamin D Status in Caucasian and Asian Women Following Ultraviolet Radiation (UVR) Exposure</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=O.%20Hakim">O. However, the ethnic differences in 25(OH)D production remain to be fully elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the differences in vitamin D production between Asian and Caucasian postmenopausal women, in response to a defined, controlled UVB exposure. Seventeen women; nine white Caucasian (skin phototype II and III), eight South Asian women (skin phototype IV and V) participated in the study, acting as their controls. Three blood samples were taken for measurement of 25(OH)D during the run-in period (nine days, no sunbed exposure) after which all subjects underwent an identical UVR exposure protocol irrespective of skin colour (nine days, three sunbed sessions: 6, 8 and 8 minutes respectively with approximately 80% of body surface exposed). Skin tone was measured four times during the study. Both groups showed a gradual increase in 25(OH)D with final levels significantly higher than baseline (p<0.01). 25(OH)D concentration mean from a baseline of 43.58±19.65 to 57.80±17.11 nmol/l among Caucasian and from 27.03±23.92 to 44.73±17.74 nmol/l among Asian women. The baseline status of vitamin D was classified as deficient among the Asian women and insufficient among the Caucasian women. The percentage increase in vitamin D3 among Caucasians was 39.86% (21.02) and 207.78% (286.02) in Asian subjects respectively. This greater response to UVR exposure reflects the lower baseline levels of the Asian subjects. The mixed linear model analysis identified a significant effect of duration of UVR exposure on the production of 25(OH)D. However, the model shows no significant effect of ethnicity and skin tone on the production of 25(OH)D. These novel findings indicate that people of Asian ethnicity have the full capability to produce a similar amount of vitamin D compared to the Caucasian group; initial vitamin D concentration influences the amount of UVB needed to reach equal serum concentrations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ethnicity" title="ethnicity">ethnicity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Caucasian" title=" Caucasian"> Caucasian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=South%20Asian" title=" South Asian"> South Asian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vitamin%20D" title=" vitamin D"> vitamin D</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultraviolet%20radiation" title=" ultraviolet radiation"> ultraviolet radiation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UVR" title=" UVR"> UVR</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23996/differences-in-vitamin-d-status-in-caucasian-and-asian-women-following-ultraviolet-radiation-uvr-exposure" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23996.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">534</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">36</span> A Survey of Online User Perspectives and Age Profile in an Undergraduate Fundamental Business Technology Course</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Morin">Danielle Morin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jennifer%20D.%20E.%20Thomas"> Jennifer D. While past studies consider students’ attitudes towards online education and how their grades differed from in-class lectures, the profile of the online student remains a blur. To shed light on this, an online survey was administered to about 1,500 students enrolled in an undergraduate Fundamental Business Technology course at a Canadian University. The survey was comprised of questions on students’ demographics, their reasons for choosing online courses, their expectations towards the course, the communication channels they use for the course with fellow students and with the instructor. This paper focused on the research question: Do the perspectives of online students concerning the online experience, in general, and in the course in particular, differ according to age profile? After several statistical analyses, it was found that age does have an impact on the reasons why students select online classes instead of in-class. For example, it was found that the perception that an online course might be easier than in-class delivery was a more important reason for younger students than for older ones. Similarly, the influence of friends is much more important for younger students, than for older students. Similar results were found when analyzing students’ expectation about the online course and their use of communication tools. Overall, the age profile of online users had an impact on reasons, expectations and means of communication in an undergraduate Fundamental Business Technology course. It is left to be seen if this holds true across other courses, graduate and undergraduate. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communication%20channels" title="communication channels">communication channels</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fundamentals%20of%20business%20technology" title=" fundamentals of business technology"> fundamentals of business technology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=online%20classes" title=" online classes"> online classes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pedagogy" title=" pedagogy"> pedagogy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=user%20age%20profile" title=" user age profile"> user age profile</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=user%20perspectives" title=" user perspectives"> user perspectives</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/86795/a-survey-of-online-user-perspectives-and-age-profile-in-an-undergraduate-fundamental-business-technology-course" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/86795.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">250</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">35</span> Addressing Coastal Community Vulnerabilities with Alternative Marine Energy Projects</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Preziuso">Danielle Preziuso</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kamila%20Kazimierczuk"> Kamila Kazimierczuk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Annalise%20Stein"> Annalise Stein</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bethel%20Tarekegne"> Bethel Tarekegne</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Coastal communities experience a variety of distinct socioeconomic, technical, and environmental vulnerabilities, all of which accrue heightened risk with increasingly frequent and severe climate change impacts. Marine renewable energy (MRE) offers a potential solution for mitigating coastal community vulnerabilities, especially water-energy dependencies while delivering promising co-benefits such as increased resilience and more sustainable energy outcomes. This paper explores coastal community vulnerabilities and service dependencies based on the local drivers that create them, with attention to climate change impacts and how they catalyze water-energy unmet needs in these communities. We examine the vulnerabilities through the lens of coastal Tribal communities (i.e., the Makah Tribe, the Kenaitze Tribe, Quinault Nation), as indigenous communities often face compounded impacts of technical, economic, and environmental vulnerabilities due to their underlying socio-demographic inequalities. We offer an environmental and energy justice indicators framework to understand how these vulnerabilities disproportionately manifest and impact the most vulnerable community members, and we subsequently utilize the framework to inform a weighted decision matrix tool that compares the viability of MRE-based alternative energy futures in addressing these vulnerabilities. The framework and complementary tool highlight opportunities for future MRE research and pilot demonstrations that directly respond to the vulnerabilities of coastal communities. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=coastal%20communities" title="coastal communities">coastal communities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=decision%20matrix" title=" decision matrix"> decision matrix</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20equity" title=" energy equity"> energy equity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20vulnerability" title=" energy vulnerability"> energy vulnerability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=marine%20energy" title=" marine energy"> marine energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=service%20dependency" title=" service dependency"> service dependency</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162679/addressing-coastal-community-vulnerabilities-with-alternative-marine-energy-projects" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162679.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">78</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">34</span> Prediction of Product Size Distribution of a Vertical Stirred Mill Based on Breakage Kinetics</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=C.%20R.%20Danielle">C. These ores have provided new challenges in concentrator design because fine and ultra-fine grinding is required to achieve acceptable recovery rates. Therefore, the correct design of a grinding circuit is important for minimizing unit costs and increasing product quality. The use of ball mills for grinding in fine size ranges is inefficient and, therefore, vertical stirred grinding mills are becoming increasingly popular in the mineral processing industry due to its already known high energy efficiency. This work presents a hypothesis of a methodology to predict the product size distribution of a vertical stirred mill using a Bond ball mill. The Population Balance Model (PBM) was used to empirically analyze the performance of a vertical mill and a Bond ball mill. The breakage parameters obtained for both grinding mills are compared to determine the possibility of predicting the product size distribution of a vertical mill based on the results obtained from the Bond ball mill. The biggest advantage of this methodology is that most of the minerals processing laboratories already have a Bond ball mill to perform the tests suggested in this study. Preliminary results show the possibility of predicting the performance of a laboratory vertical stirred mill using a Bond ball mill. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bond%20ball%20mill" title="bond ball mill">bond ball mill</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=population%20balance%20model" title=" population balance model"> population balance model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=product%20size%20distribution" title=" product size distribution"> product size distribution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vertical%20stirred%20mill" title=" vertical stirred mill"> vertical stirred mill</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62771/prediction-of-product-size-distribution-of-a-vertical-stirred-mill-based-on-breakage-kinetics" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62771.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">292</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">33</span> Criminal Psychology: The Relationship Between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Criminal Justice Involvement in Vietnam War Veterans</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Page">Danielle Page</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Foregoing studies, statistics, and medical evaluations have established a relationship between Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and criminal justice involvement in Vietnam veterans. This research aims to define the relationship between PTSD and criminal justice involvement in veterans, explore the mediating factors in this relationship, and analyze numerous court cases in this subject area. Further, it will examine the ways in which crime rates can be reduced for veterans with symptoms of PTSD. This ranges from the improvement of healthcare systems to the implementation of special courts to handle veteran cases. The contribution of this work to the field of forensic psychology will be significant, as it will analyze preexisting case studies and experimental data in an effort to improve the ways in which veteran cases are handled in the criminal justice system. Military personnel involved in the criminal justice system are a vulnerable population in need of healthcare and legislative attention, and this work will bring us one step closer to providing them with just that. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=forensic%20psychology" title="forensic psychology">forensic psychology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=psychotraumatology" title=" psychotraumatology"> psychotraumatology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PTSD" title=" PTSD"> PTSD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=veterans" title=" veterans"> veterans</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/157821/criminal-psychology-the-relationship-between-posttraumatic-stress-disorder-and-criminal-justice-involvement-in-vietnam-war-veterans" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/157821.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">91</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">32</span> An Investigation of the Use of Visible Spectrophotometric Analysis of Lead in an Herbal Tea Supplement</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Salve%20Alessandria%20Alcantara">Salve Alessandria Alcantara</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=John%20Armand%20E.%20Aquino"> John Armand E. Although sensitive analytical instruments are already available, the USP limit test for lead is still widely used. However, because of its serious shortcomings, Lang Lang and his colleagues developed a spectrophotometric method for determination of lead in all types of samples. This method was the one adapted in this study. The actual procedure performed was divided into three parts: digestion, extraction and analysis. For digestion, HNO3 and CH3COOH were used. Afterwards, masking agents, 0.003% and 0.001% dithizone in CHCl3 were added and used for the extraction. For the analysis, standard addition method and colorimetry were performed. This was done in triplicates under two conditions. The 1st condition, using 25µg/mL of standard, resulted to very low absorbances with an r2 of 0.551. This led to the use of a higher concentration, 1mg/mL, for condition 2. Precipitation of lead cyanide was observed and the absorbance readings were relatively higher but between 0.15-0.25, resulting to a very low r2 of 0.429. LOQ and LOD were not computed due to the limitations of the Milton-Roy Spectrophotometer. The method performed has a shorter digestion time, and used less but more accessible reagents. However, the optimum ratio of dithizone-lead complex must be observed in order to obtain reliable results while exploring other concentration of standards. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=herbal%20tea%20supplement" title="herbal tea supplement">herbal tea supplement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lead-dithizone%20complex" title=" lead-dithizone complex"> lead-dithizone complex</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=standard%20addition" title=" standard addition"> standard addition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=visible%20spectroscopy" title=" visible spectroscopy"> visible spectroscopy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/10463/an-investigation-of-the-use-of-visible-spectrophotometric-analysis-of-lead-in-an-herbal-tea-supplement" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/10463.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">387</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">31</span> VR in the Middle School Classroom-An Experimental Study on Spatial Relations and Immersive Virtual Reality</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Danielle%20Schneider">Danielle Schneider</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ying%20Xie"> Ying Xie</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Middle school science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers experience an exceptional challenge in the expectation to incorporate curricula that builds strong spatial reasoning skills on rudimentary geometry concepts. Because spatial ability is so closely tied to STEM students’ success, researchers are tasked to determine effective instructional practices that create an authentic learning environment within the immersive virtual reality learning environment (IVRLE). This study looked to investigate the effect of the IVRLE on middle school STEM students’ spatial reasoning skills as a methodology to benefit the STEM middle school students’ spatial reasoning skills. This experimental study was comprised of thirty 7th-grade STEM students divided into a treatment group that was engaged in an immersive VR platform where they engaged in building an object in the virtual realm by applying spatial processing and visualizing its dimensions and a control group that built the identical object using a desktop computer-based, computer-aided design (CAD) program. Before and after the students participated in the respective “3D modeling” environment, their spatial reasoning abilities were assessed using the Middle Grades Mathematics Project Spatial Visualization Test (MGMP-SVT). Additionally, both groups created a physical 3D model as a secondary measure to measure the effectiveness of the IVRLE. The results of a one-way ANOVA in this study identified a negative effect on those in the IVRLE. These findings suggest that with middle school students, virtual reality (VR) proved an inadequate tool to benefit spatial relation skills as compared to desktop-based CAD. <p
