href="/john/18-1.htm"><b>1</b></a></span>When Jesus<MG2424> had spoken<MG3004> these<MG3778> words, He went<MG1831> away<MG1831> with His disciples<MG3101> across<MG4008> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>ravine<MG5493> of the Kidron<MG2748>, where<MG3699> there was a garden<MG2779> which<MG3739> He entered<MG1525> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>with His disciples<MG3101>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Judas<MG2455>, who was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>betraying<MG3860> Him, also<MG2532> knew<MG3609a> the place<MG5117>, because<MG3754> Jesus<MG2424> had often<MG4178> met<MG4863> there<MG1563> with His disciples<MG3101>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So<MG3767> Judas<MG2455>, having obtained<MG2983> the <i>Roman</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>cohort<MG4686> and officers<MG5257> from the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the Pharisees<MG5330>, *came<MG2064> there<MG1563> with lanterns<MG5322>, torches<MG2985>, and weapons<MG3696>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> therefore<MG3767>, knowing<MG3609a> all<MG3956> the things<MG3956> that were coming<MG2064> upon Him, came<MG1831> out<MG1831> <i>into the open</i> and *said<MG3004> to them, “Whom<MG5101> are you seeking<MG2212>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>They answered<MG611> Him, “Jesus<MG2424> the Nazarene<MG3480>.” He *said<MG3004> to them, “I am<MG1510> <i>He.</i>” And Judas<MG2455> also<MG2532>, who was betraying<MG3860> Him, was standing<MG2476> with them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now<MG3767> then<MG3767>, when<MG5613> He said<MG3004> to them, “I am<MG1510> <i>He,</i>” they drew<MG565> back<MG3694> and fell<MG4098> to the ground<MG5476>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>He then<MG3767> asked<MG1905> them again<MG3825>, “Whom<MG5101> are you seeking<MG2212>?” And they said<MG3004>, “Jesus<MG2424> the Nazarene<MG3480>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611>, “I told<MG3004> you that I am<MG1510> <i>He;</i> so<MG3767> if<MG1487> you are seeking<MG2212> Me, let<MG863> these<MG3778> <i>men</i> go<MG5217> on<MG5217> their way<MG5217>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span><i>This took place</i> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> the word<MG3056> which<MG3739> He spoke<MG3004> would be fulfilled<MG4137>: “Of those whom<MG3739> You have given<MG1325> Me I lost<MG622> not one<MG3762>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then<MG3767> Simon<MG4613> Peter<MG4074>, since he had<MG2192> a sword<MG3162>, drew<MG1670> it and struck<MG3817> the high<MG749> priest’s<MG749> slave<MG1401>, and cut<MG609> off<MG609> his right<MG1188> ear<MG5621a>; and the slave’s<MG1401> name<MG3686> was Malchus<MG3124>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So<MG3767> Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to Peter<MG4074>, “Put<MG906> the sword<MG3162> into the sheath<MG2336>; the cup<MG4221> which<MG3739> the Father<MG3962> has given<MG1325> Me, am I not to drink<MG4095> it?” <p class="hdg">Jesus before the Priests</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So<MG3767> the <i>Roman</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>cohort<MG4686>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>commander<MG5506>, and the officers<MG5257> of the Jews<MG2453> arrested<MG4815> Jesus<MG2424> and bound<MG1210> Him, <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>and brought<MG71> Him to Annas<MG452> first<MG4413>; for he was the father-in-law<MG3995> of Caiaphas<MG2533>, who<MG3739> was high<MG749> priest<MG749> that year<MG1763>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Caiaphas<MG2533> was the one who had advised<MG4823> the Jews<MG2453> that it was<MG4851a> in<MG4851a> their best<MG4851a> interest<MG4851a> for one<MG1520> man<MG444> to die<MG599> in behalf<MG5228> of the people<MG2992>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Simon<MG4613> Peter<MG4074> was following<MG190> Jesus<MG2424>, and <i>so was</i> another<MG243> disciple<MG3101>. Now<MG1161> that disciple<MG3101> was known<MG1110> to the high<MG749> priest<MG749>, and he entered<MG4897> with<MG4897> Jesus<MG2424> into the courtyard<MG833> of the high<MG749> priest<MG749>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>but Peter<MG4074> was standing<MG2476> at the door<MG2374> outside<MG1854>. So<MG3767> the other<MG243> disciple<MG3101>, who was known<MG1110> to the high<MG749> priest<MG749>, went<MG1831> out<MG1831> and spoke<MG3004> to the doorkeeper<MG2377>, and brought<MG1521> Peter<MG4074> in<MG1521>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then<MG3767> the slave<MG3814> woman<MG3814> who was the doorkeeper<MG2377> *said<MG3004> to Peter<MG4074>, “You are not also<MG2532> <i>one</i> of this<MG3778> Man’s<MG444> disciples<MG3101>, are you?” He *said<MG3004>, “I am<MG1510> not.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> the slaves<MG1401> and the officers<MG5257> were standing<MG2476> <i>there,</i> having made<MG4160> a charcoal<MG439> fire<MG439>, for it was cold<MG5592> and they were warming<MG2328> themselves; and Peter<MG4074> was also<MG2532> with them, standing<MG2476> and warming<MG2328> himself. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The high<MG749> priest<MG749> then<MG3767> questioned<MG2065> Jesus<MG2424> about<MG4012> His disciples<MG3101>, and about<MG4012> His teaching<MG1322>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611> him, “I have spoken<MG2980> openly<MG3954> to the world<MG2889>; I always<MG3842> taught<MG1321> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>synagogues<MG4864> and in the temple<MG2413> <i>area,</i> where<MG3699> all<MG3956> the Jews<MG2453> congregate<MG4905>; and I said<MG2980> nothing<MG3762> in secret<MG2927>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Why<MG5101> are you asking<MG2065> Me? Ask<MG2065> those<MG3588> who have heard<MG191> what<MG5101> I spoke<MG2980> to them. Look<MG2396>: these<MG3778> people<MG3778> know<MG3609a> what<MG3739> I said<MG3004>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But when He said<MG3004> this<MG3778>, one<MG1520> of the officers<MG5257>, who was standing<MG3936> nearby<MG3936>, struck<MG1325, 4475> Jesus<MG2424>, saying<MG3004>, “Is that the way<MG3779> You answer<MG611> the high<MG749> priest<MG749>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611> him, “If<MG1487> I have spoken<MG2980> wrongly<MG2560>, testify<MG3140> of the wrong<MG2556>; but if<MG1487> rightly<MG2573>, why<MG5101> do you strike<MG1194> Me?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>So<MG3767> Annas<MG452> sent<MG649> Him bound<MG1210> to Caiaphas<MG2533> the high<MG749> priest<MG749>. <p class="hdg">Peter’s Denial of Jesus</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> Simon<MG4613> Peter<MG4074> was <i>still</i> standing<MG2476> and warming<MG2328> himself. So<MG3767> they said<MG3004> to him, “You are not <i>one</i> of His disciples<MG3101> as<MG2532> well<MG2532>, are you?” He denied<MG720> <i>it,</i> and said<MG3004>, “I am<MG1510> not.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>One<MG1520> of the slaves<MG1401> of the high<MG749> priest<MG749>, who was related<MG4773a> to the one whose<MG3739> ear<MG5621b> Peter<MG4074> cut<MG609> off<MG609>, *said<MG3004>, “Did I not see<MG3708> you in the garden<MG2779> with Him?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Peter<MG4074> then<MG3767> denied<MG720> <i>it</i> again<MG3825>, and immediately<MG2112> a rooster<MG220> crowed<MG5455>. <p class="hdg">Jesus before Pilate</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then<MG3767> they *brought<MG71> Jesus<MG2424> from Caiaphas<MG2533> into the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Praetorium<MG4232>, and it was early<MG4404>; and they themselves<MG846> did not enter<MG1525> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Praetorium<MG4232>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> they would not be defiled<MG3392>, but might eat<MG2068> the Passover<MG3957>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> Pilate<MG4091> came<MG1831> out<MG1831> to them and *said<MG5346>, “What<MG5101> accusation<MG2724> are you bringing<MG5342> against this<MG3778> Man<MG444>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>They answered<MG611> and said<MG3004> to him, “If<MG1487> this<MG3778> Man<MG3778> were not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>a criminal<MG2556>, we would not have handed<MG3860> Him over<MG3860> to you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>So<MG3767> Pilate<MG4091> said<MG3004> to them, “Take<MG2983> Him yourselves<MG4771>, and judge<MG2919> Him according<MG2596> to your law<MG3551>.” The Jews<MG2453> said<MG3004> to him, “We are not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>permitted<MG1832> to put<MG615> anyone<MG3762> to<MG615> death<MG615>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span><i>This happened</i> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> the word<MG3056> of Jesus<MG2424> which<MG3739> He said<MG3004>, indicating<MG4591> what<MG4169> kind<MG4169> of death<MG2288> He was<MG3195> going<MG3195> to<MG3195> die<MG599>, would be fulfilled<MG4137>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> Pilate<MG4091> entered<MG1525> the Praetorium<MG4232> again<MG3825>, and summoned<MG5455> Jesus<MG2424> and said<MG3004> to Him, “You are the King<MG935> of the Jews<MG2453>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611>, “Are you saying<MG3004> this<MG3778> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>on your own<MG1438>, or<MG2228> did others<MG243> tell<MG3004> you about<MG4012> Me?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Pilate<MG4091> answered<MG611>, “I am<MG1510> not a Jew<MG2453>, am I? Your own nation<MG1484> and the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> handed<MG3860> You over<MG3860> to me; what<MG5101> have You done<MG4160>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611>, “My kingdom<MG932> is not of this<MG3778> world<MG2889>. If<MG1487> My kingdom<MG932> were of this<MG3778> world<MG2889>, My servants<MG5257> would be fighting<MG75> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> I would not be handed<MG3860> over<MG3860> to the Jews<MG2453>; but as<MG3568> it<MG3568> is<MG3568>, My kingdom<MG932> is not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>of<MG1782> this<MG1782> realm<MG1782>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Therefore<MG3767> Pilate<MG4091> said<MG3004> to Him, “So<MG3766> You are a king<MG935>?” Jesus<MG2424> answered<MG611>, “You say<MG3004> <i>correctly</i> that I am<MG1510> a king<MG935>. For this<MG3778> <i>purpose</i> I have been born<MG1080>, and for this<MG3778> I have come<MG2064> into the world<MG2889>: to testify<MG3140> to the truth<MG225>.
