He sank 15 ships, mostly small coastal sailing vessels, in her, earning the <b>German Cross in Gold</b>.</p> <p>He left <a href="/boats/u81.htm">U-81</a> in January 1944 to join the <b>K-Verband</b> (Midget Submarine Group), and commanded <b>K-Verband Flotilla 361</b> from March to July 1944, during which time he was awarded the <a href="/men/decorations/ritter.htm">Knights Cross</a>.
