class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nitrocarburisation is a surface hardening technique often applied to improve the wear resistance of steel surfaces. It is considered to be a promising solution in comparison with other processes such as flame spraying, owing to the formation of a diffusion layer which provides mechanical integrity, as well as its cost-effectiveness. To improve other tribological properties of the surface such as the coefficient of friction (COF), dry lubricants are utilized. Currently, the lifetime of steel components in many applications using either of these techniques individually are faced with the limitations of the two: high COF for nitrocarburized surfaces and low wear resistance of dry lubricant coatings. To this end, the current study involves the creation of a hybrid surface using the impregnation of a dry lubricant on to a nitrocarburized surface. The mechanical strength and hardness of Gerster SA’s nitrocarburized surfaces accompanied by the impregnation of the porous outermost layer with a solid lubricant will create a hybrid surface possessing both outstanding wear resistance and a low friction coefficient and with high adherence to the substrate. Gerster SA has the state-of-the-art technology for the surface hardening of various steels. Through their expertise in the field, the nitrocarburizing process parameters (atmosphere, temperature, dwelling time) were optimized to obtain samples that have a distinct porous structure (in terms of size, shape, and density) as observed by metallographic and microscopic analyses. The porosity thus obtained is suitable for the impregnation of a dry lubricant. A commercially available dry lubricant with a thermoplastic matrix was employed for the impregnation process, which was optimized to obtain a void-free interface with the surface of the nitrocarburized layer (henceforth called hybrid surface). In parallel, metallic samples without nitrocarburisation were also impregnated with the same dry lubricant as a reference (henceforth called reference surface). The reference and the nitrocarburized surfaces, with and without the dry lubricant were tested for their tribological behavior by sliding against a quenched steel ball using a nanotribometer. Without any lubricant, the nitrocarburized surface showed a wear rate 5x lower than the reference metal. In the presence of a thin film of dry lubricant ( < 2 micrometers) and under the application of high loads (500 mN or ~800 MPa), while the COF for the reference surface increased from ~0.1 to > 0.3 within 120 m, the hybrid surface retained a COF < 0.2 for over 400m of sliding. In addition, while the steel ball sliding against the reference surface showed heavy wear, the corresponding ball sliding against the hybrid surface showed very limited wear. Observations of the sliding tracks in the hybrid surface using Electron Microscopy show the presence of the nitrocarburized nodules as well as the lubricant, whereas no traces of the lubricant were found in the sliding track on the reference surface. In this manner, the clear advantage of combining nitrocarburisation with the impregnation of a dry lubricant towards forming a hybrid surface has been demonstrated. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dry%20lubrication" title="dry lubrication">dry lubrication</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hybrid%20surfaces" title=" hybrid surfaces"> hybrid surfaces</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=improved%20wear%20resistance" title=" improved wear resistance"> improved wear resistance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nitrocarburisation" title=" nitrocarburisation"> nitrocarburisation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=steels" title=" steels"> steels</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92194/combining-nitrocarburisation-and-dry-lubrication-for-improving-component-lifetime" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92194.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">122</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">176</span> Anion Exchange Nanocomposite Membrane Doped with ZnO-Nanoparticles for Direct Methanol Alkaline Fuel Cell</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Phumlani%20Msomi">Phumlani Msomi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Nonjola"> Patrick Nonjola</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Ndungu"> Patrick Ndungu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=James%20Ramontja"> James Ramontja</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A series of quaternized poly (2.6 dimethyl – 1.4 phenylene oxide)/ polysulfone (QPPO/PSF) blend anion exchange membrane (AEM) were successfully fabricated and characterized for methanol alkaline fuel cell application. Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were introduced in the polymer matrix to enhance the intrinsic properties of the AEM. To confirm successful fabrication, FT-IR spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR and HMBC ¹⁵N NMR) were used. The membrane properties were enhanced by the addition of ZnO nanoparticles. The addition of ZnO nanoparticles resulted to a higher ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 3.72 mmol.g⁻¹and a 30-fold ion conductivity (IC) increase of the nanocomposite due to no (zero (0)) methanol permeability at 30 °C and increased water uptake. The QPPO/PSF/2% ZnO composite retained over 80 % of its initial IC when evaluated for alkaline stability at room temperature. The maximum power output reached for the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) constructed with QPPO/PSF/2%ZnO is 69 mW.cm⁻², which is about three times more than the parent QPPO membrane. The above results indicate that QPPO/PSF-ZnO is a good candidate as an anion exchange membrane for fuel cell application. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anion%20exchange%20membrane" title="anion exchange membrane">anion exchange membrane</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fuel%20cell" title=" fuel cell"> fuel cell</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=zinc%20oxide" title=" zinc oxide"> zinc oxide</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanocomposite" title=" nanocomposite"> nanocomposite</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75947/anion-exchange-nanocomposite-membrane-doped-with-zno-nanoparticles-for-direct-methanol-alkaline-fuel-cell" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75947.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">272</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">175</span> A Research on Determining the Viability of a Job Board Website for Refugees in Kenya</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Prince%20Mugoya">Prince Mugoya</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Collins%20Oduor%20Ondiek"> Collins Oduor Ondiek</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Kanyi%20Wamuyu"> Patrick Kanyi Wamuyu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Refugee Job Board Website is a web-based application that provides a platform for organizations to post jobs specifically for refugees. A smart grid is an essential part of any smart city as both consumers and power utility companies benefit from the features provided by the power grid. These digitization parameters are the resolution of the analog to digital conversion and the sampling rate. This is accomplished through the derivation of characteristic curves based on Fano inequality and the calculation of the mutual information content over a given dataset. The mutual information is calculated between the examples in the dataset and the corresponding variation in the feature that needs to be estimated. The optimal parameters are identified in a manner that ensures optimal estimation performance while preventing inefficiency in using unnecessarily powerful analog to digital converters. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=analog%20to%20digital%20conversion" title="analog to digital conversion">analog to digital conversion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digitization" title=" digitization"> digitization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sampling%20rate" title=" sampling rate"> sampling rate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultrasonic" title=" ultrasonic"> ultrasonic</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141040/an-application-driven-procedure-for-optimal-signal-digitization-of-automotive-grade-ultrasonic-sensors" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/141040.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">207</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">170</span> Integrated Framework for Establishing Born-Global Firms in Sub-Saharan Africa</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nonso%20Ochinanwata">Nonso Ochinanwata</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Oseloka%20Ezepue"> Patrick Oseloka Ezepue</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper explores the process of creating and capturing born-global firm opportunities. The paper suggests that sub-Saharan African governments should make a favourable microeconomics policy that will enable entrepreneurs and firms to acquire some certain minimal resources and capabilities, in order to develop global products and services. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=born%20global-firms" title="born global-firms">born global-firms</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=collaboration" title=" collaboration"> collaboration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=internationalisation" title=" internationalisation"> internationalisation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dynamic%20capabilities" title=" dynamic capabilities"> dynamic capabilities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=entrepreneurship" title=" entrepreneurship"> entrepreneurship</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sub-Saharan%20Africa" title=" sub-Saharan Africa"> sub-Saharan Africa</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55828/integrated-framework-for-establishing-born-global-firms-in-sub-saharan-africa" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55828.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">275</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">169</span> Cultural Effects on the Performance of Non- Profit and For-Profit Microfinance Institutions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20M.%20Stanton">Patrick M. Formal institutions (business regulatory environment, property rights, social protection, and a developed financial sector) impact the likelihood of MFIs being for-profit across countries. Cultural differences across countries (power distance, individualism, masculinity, and indulgence) seem to be a factor in the legal status of the MFI (non-profit or for-profit). MFIs in countries with stronger formal institutions, a greater degree of power distance, and a higher degree of collectivism experience better financial and social performance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hofstede%20cultural%20dimensions" title="Hofstede cultural dimensions">Hofstede cultural dimensions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=international%20finance" title=" international finance"> international finance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microfinance%20institutions" title=" microfinance institutions"> microfinance institutions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-profite" title=" non-profite"> non-profite</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/116363/cultural-effects-on-the-performance-of-non-profit-and-for-profit-microfinance-institutions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/116363.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">273</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">168</span> Coherence and Cohesion in IELTS Academic Writing: Helping Students to Improve</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rory%20Patrick%20O%27Kane">Rory Patrick O'Kane</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> More universities and third level institutions now require at least an IELTS Band 6 for entry into courses of study for non-native speakers of English. A requirement for candidates aiming at Band 6 and above is that they produce answers which show a clear, overall progression of information and ideas and which use cohesive devices effectively. With this in mind, the presenter will examine what exactly is meant by coherence and cohesion and various strategies which can be used to assist students in improving their scores in this area. A number of classroom teaching ideas will be introduced, and participants will have the opportunity to compare and discuss sample answers written by candidates for this examination with a specific focus on coherence and cohesion. They are widely used as anti hypertension, anti tubercular, anticancer activity, antiviral, Alzheimer's disease, antioxidant properties, and free radical induced lipid peroxidation. Many drugs and natural products contain indole moiety, such as the vinca alkaloids, fungal metabolites and marine natural products. Generally applicable synthetic methods for indole moiety involve ring closure to form the pyrrole. Indole derivatives can also be accessed by further functionalization of the indole nucleus. Therefore we report a mild and efficient protocol for the synthesis of analogues of indole catalyzed via zeolithe USY doped with CuI under solvent-free conditions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=indole" title="indole">indole</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=zeolithe" title=" zeolithe"> zeolithe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=USY-CuI" title=" USY-CuI"> USY-CuI</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heterogeneous%20catalysis" title=" heterogeneous catalysis"> heterogeneous catalysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16537/usy-cui-zeolite-an-efficient-and-reusable-catalyst-for-derivatives-indole-synthesis" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16537.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">584</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">166</span> Management Opposition, Strikes, and Union Threats</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20N%C3%BC%C3%9F">Patrick Nüß</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> I estimate management opposition against unions in terms of hiring discrimination by a large scale field experiment in the German labor market. There is evidence that the observed management opposition can be explained by sectoral union threat effects. Sectors with lower hiring discrimination have lower coverage of collective agreements, and in the absence of a collective agreement, they are less likely to follow the collective agreement wage setting. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=trade%20unions" title="trade unions">trade unions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Industrial%20relations" title=" Industrial relations"> Industrial relations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=management%20opposition" title=" management opposition"> management opposition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=union%20threat" title=" union threat"> union threat</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=labor%20disputes" title=" labor disputes"> labor disputes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=field%20experiments" title=" field experiments"> field experiments</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/137893/management-opposition-strikes-and-union-threats" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/137893.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">185</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">165</span> Mechanical Behaviour of High Strength Steel Thin-Walled Profiles for Automated Rack Supported Warehouses</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Agnese%20Natali">Agnese Natali</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesco%20Morelli"> Francesco Morelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Walter%20Salvatore"> Walter Salvatore</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jos%C3%A9%20Humberto%20Matias%20de%20Paula%20Filho"> José Humberto Matias de Paula Filho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Pol"> Patrick Pol</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the framework of the evaluation of the applicability of high strength steel to produce thin-walled elements to be used in Automated Rack Supported Warehouses, an experimental campaign is carried outto evaluate the structural performance of typical profile shapes adopted for such purposes and made of high strength steel. Three areas in the Philippines where mariculture parks are still in active operation were identified as study sites for this research. Financial analysis was used to estimate profitability of mariculture operations in the selected study sites. Based on the result of this research, milkfish production in mariculture parks remains profitable both in terms of net profit generation and the return on investment. To improve the profitability of aquaculture operations in mariculture parks, the relatively high price of operational inputs should be managed. As a recommendation, further studies should be conducted on the profitability of aquaculture operations in mariculture parks in the country to include other factors which may cause losses on the part of the operator and factors that may affect price of produce upon harvest. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mariculture%20parks" title="mariculture parks">mariculture parks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=milkfish%20production" title=" milkfish production"> milkfish production</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aquaculture" title=" aquaculture"> aquaculture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=profitability" title=" profitability"> profitability</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147020/profitability-of-milkfish-production-from-three-mariculture-parks-in-the-philippines" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/147020.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">157</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">162</span> Analysis of Cross-Correlations in Emerging Markets Using Random Matrix Theory</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Chinwe%20Urama">Thomas Chinwe Urama</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Oseloka%20Ezepue"> Patrick Oseloka Ezepue</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peters%20Chimezie%20Nnanwa"> Peters Chimezie Nnanwa</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper investigates the universal financial dynamics in two dominant stock markets in Sub-Saharan Africa, through an in-depth analysis of the cross-correlation matrix of price returns in Nigerian Stock Market (NSM) and Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), for the period 2009 to 2013. The strength of correlations between stocks is known to be higher in JSE than that of the NSM. Particularly important for modelling Nigerian derivatives in the future, the interactions of other stocks with the oil sector are weak, whereas the banking sector has strong positive interactions with the other sectors in the stock exchange. For the JSE, it is the oil sector and beverages that have greater sectorial correlations, instead of the banks which have the weaker correlation with other sectors in the stock exchange. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=random%20matrix%20theory" title="random matrix theory">random matrix theory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cross-correlations" title=" cross-correlations"> cross-correlations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emerging%20markets" title=" emerging markets"> emerging markets</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=option%20pricing" title=" option pricing"> option pricing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=eigenvalues%20eigenvectors" title=" eigenvalues eigenvectors"> eigenvalues eigenvectors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inverse%20participation%20ratios%20and%20implied%20volatility" title=" inverse participation ratios and implied volatility"> inverse participation ratios and implied volatility</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65711/analysis-of-cross-correlations-in-emerging-markets-using-random-matrix-theory" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65711.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">299</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">161</span> A Study of the Costs and Benefits of Smart City Projects Including the Scenario of Public-Private Partnerships</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20T.%20I.%20Lam">Patrick T. The recent trend is towards the engagement of the private sector to utilize their resources and expertise, especially in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) areas, where innovations blossom. This study focuses on the identification of costs (on a life cycle basis) and benefits associated with smart city project developments based on a comprehensive literature review and case studies, where public-private partnerships would warrant consideration, the related costs and benefits are highlighted. Based on a previous work, a one-dimensional approach is developed by using the finite element method to solve the transient compressible flow and to predict the pressure and temperature evolution in space and time. Mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations are solved in a fully coupled way in the reservoirs, the pipes and the porous media. Numerical results, such as pressure and temperature evolutions, are firstly compared with experimental data to validate the model for different configurations. Couplings between porous media and pipe flow are then validated by checking mass balance. The influence of the porous media and the nature of the gas is then studied for different initial high pressure values. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compressible%20flow" title="compressible flow">compressible flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fluid%20mechanics" title=" fluid mechanics"> fluid mechanics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heat%20transfer" title=" heat transfer"> heat transfer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=porous%20media" title=" porous media"> porous media</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95747/compressible-flow-modeling-in-pipes-and-porous-media-during-blowdown-experiment" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95747.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">406</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">159</span> Integrating Human Preferences into the Automated Decisions of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Arwa%20Khannoussi">Arwa Khannoussi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandru-Liviu%20Olteanu"> Alexandru-Liviu Olteanu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pritesh%20Narayan"> Pritesh Narayan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Catherine%20Dezan"> Catherine Dezan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jean-Philippe%20Diguet"> Jean-Philippe Diguet</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Meyer"> Patrick Meyer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jacques%20Petit-Frere"> Jacques Petit-Frere</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Due to the nature of autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) missions, it is important that the decisions of a UAV stay consistent with the priorities of an operator, while at the same time allowing them to be easily audited and explained. We demonstrate that, with such a preference-based decision engine, the decisions of the UAV are compatible with the priorities of the operator, which in turn increases her/his confidence in its autonomous behavior. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autonomous%20UAV" title="autonomous UAV">autonomous UAV</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multi-criteria%20decision%20aiding" title=" multi-criteria decision aiding"> multi-criteria decision aiding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multi-layers%20decision%20engine" title=" multi-layers decision engine"> multi-layers decision engine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=operator%27s%20preferences" title=" operator's preferences"> operator's preferences</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=traceable%20decisions" title=" traceable decisions"> traceable decisions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UAV%20simulation" title=" UAV simulation"> UAV simulation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98229/integrating-human-preferences-into-the-automated-decisions-of-unmanned-aerial-vehicles" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98229.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">255</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">158</span> The Home as Memory Palace: Three Case Studies of Artistic Representations of the Relationship between Individual and Collective Memory and the Home</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20M.%20F.%20Bertens">Laura M. F. Bertens</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The houses we inhabit are important containers of memory. As homes, they take on meaning for those who live inside, and memories of family life become intimately tied up with rooms, windows, and gardens. Each new family creates a new layer of meaning, resulting in a palimpsest of family memory. These houses function quite literally as memory palaces, as a walk through a childhood home will show; each room conjures up images of past events. Over time, these personal memories become woven together with the cultural memory of countries and generations. The importance of the home is a central theme in art, and several contemporary artists have a special interest in the relationship between memory and the home. This paper analyses three case studies in order to get a deeper understanding of the ways in which the home functions and feels like a memory palace, both on an individual and on a collective, cultural level. Close reading of the artworks is performed on the theoretical intersection between Art History and Cultural Memory Studies. The first case study concerns works from the exhibition Mnemosyne by the artist duo Anne and Patrick Poirier. These works combine interests in architecture, archaeology, and psychology. Models of cities and fantastical architectural designs resemble physical structures (such as the brain), architectural metaphors used in representing the concept of memory (such as the memory palace), and archaeological remains, essential to our shared cultural memories. Secondly, works by Do Ho Suh will help us understand the relationship between the home and memory on a far more personal level; outlines of rooms from his former homes, made of colourful, transparent fabric and combined into new structures, provide an insight into the way these spaces retain individual memories. The spaces have been emptied out, and only the husks remain. Although the remnants of walls, light switches, doors, electricity outlets, etc. are standard, mass-produced elements found in many homes and devoid of inherent meaning, together they remind us of the emotional significance attached to the muscle memory of spaces we once inhabited. The third case study concerns an exhibition in a house put up for sale on the Dutch real estate website Funda. The house was built in 1933 by a Jewish family fleeing from Germany, and the father and son were later deported and killed. The artists Anne van As and CA Wertheim have used the history and memories of the house as a starting point for an exhibition called (T)huis, a combination of the Dutch words for home and house. This case study illustrates the way houses become containers of memories; each new family ‘resets’ the meaning of a house, but traces of earlier memories remain. The exhibition allows us to explore the transition of individual memories into shared cultural memory, in this case of WWII. Taken together, the analyses provide a deeper understanding of different facets of the relationship between the home and memory, both individual and collective, and the ways in which art can represent these. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anne%20and%20Patrick%20Poirier" title="Anne and Patrick Poirier">Anne and Patrick Poirier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cultural%20memory" title=" cultural memory"> cultural memory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Do%20Ho%20Suh" title=" Do Ho Suh"> Do Ho Suh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=home" title=" home"> home</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=memory%20palace" title=" memory palace"> memory palace</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/121241/the-home-as-memory-palace-three-case-studies-of-artistic-representations-of-the-relationship-between-individual-and-collective-memory-and-the-home" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/121241.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">159</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">157</span> Valorisation of Polyethylene and Plastic Bottle Wastes as Pavement Blocks</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Babagana%20Mohammed">Babagana Mohammed</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fidelis%20Patrick%20Afangide"> Fidelis Patrick Afangide</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This research investigated the possibility of using waste low-dense polyethylene and waste plastic bottles for the production of interlock pavement blocks. In many parts of the world, interlock pavement block is used widely as modern day solution to outdoor flooring applications and the blocks have different shapes, sizes and colours suiting the imagination of landscape architects. Using suitable and conventional mould having a 220 x 135 x 50 mm³ shape, the interlock blocks were produced. The material constituents of the produced blocks were waste low-dense polyethylene and waste plastic bottles mixed in varying, respective percentage-weight proportions of; 100%+0%, 75%+25%, 50%+50% and 25%+75%. The blocks were then tested for unconfined compressive strength and water absorption properties. The test results compared well with those of conventional concrete interlock blocks and the research demonstrates the possibility of value recovery from the waste streams which are currently dumped in open-spaces thereby affecting the environment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pavement%20blocks" title="pavement blocks">pavement blocks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polyethylene" title=" polyethylene"> polyethylene</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plastic%20bottle" title=" plastic bottle"> plastic bottle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wastes" title=" wastes"> wastes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=valorization" title=" valorization"> valorization</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79947/valorisation-of-polyethylene-and-plastic-bottle-wastes-as-pavement-blocks" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/79947.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">402</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">156</span> Predicting Shot Making in Basketball Learnt Fromadversarial Multiagent Trajectories</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mark%20Harmon">Mark Harmon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdolghani%20Ebrahimi"> Abdolghani Ebrahimi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Lucey"> Patrick Lucey</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Diego%20Klabjan"> Diego Klabjan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, we predict the likelihood of a player making a shot in basketball from multiagent trajectories. Previous approaches to similar problems center on hand-crafting features to capture domain-specific knowledge. Although intuitive, recent work in deep learning has shown, this approach is prone to missing important predictive features. To circumvent this issue, we present a convolutional neural network (CNN) approach where we initially represent the multiagent behavior as an image. To encode the adversarial nature of basketball, we use a multichannel image which we then feed into a CNN. Additionally, to capture the temporal aspect of the trajectories, we use “fading.” We find that this approach is superior to a traditional FFN model. By using gradient ascent, we were able to discover what the CNN filters look for during training. Last, we find that a combined FFN+CNN is the best performing network with an error rate of 39%. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=basketball" title="basketball">basketball</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computer%20vision" title=" computer vision"> computer vision</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=image%20processing" title=" image processing"> image processing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=convolutional%20neural%20network" title=" convolutional neural network"> convolutional neural network</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133743/predicting-shot-making-in-basketball-learnt-fromadversarial-multiagent-trajectories" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133743.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">153</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">155</span> Factors Affecting Consumers’ Willingness to Pay for Chicken Meat from Biosecure Farms</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Veronica%20Sri%20Lestari">Veronica Sri Lestari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asmuddin%20Natsir"> Asmuddin Natsir</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hasmida%20Karim"> Hasmida Karim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ian%20Patrick"> Ian Patrick</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The research aimed at investigating the factors affecting consumers’ willingness to pay for chicken meat from biosecure farms. The research was conducted in Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Samples were taken using random sampling technique in two supermarkets namely Lotte Mart and Gelael. Total samples were 50 respondents which comprised the chicken meat consumers. To find out the consumers’ willingness to pay for chicken meat from the biosecure farms, the contingent valuation method was utilized. Data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. Probit Logistic was estimated to examine the factors affecting the consumers’ willingness to pay for at the premium price for chicken meat from the biosecure farms. The research indicates that the education and income affect significantly the consumers’ willingness to pay for chicken meat from the biosecure farms (P < 0.05). The results of the study will be beneficial for the policy makers, producers, consumers and those conducting research. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biosecure" title="biosecure">biosecure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chicken" title=" chicken"> chicken</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=farms" title=" farms"> farms</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=consumer" title=" consumer"> consumer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=willingness-to-pay" title=" willingness-to-pay"> willingness-to-pay</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48035/factors-affecting-consumers-willingness-to-pay-for-chicken-meat-from-biosecure-farms" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48035.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">274</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">154</span> Analysis of the Volatile Organic Compounds of Tillandsia Flowers by HS-SPME/GC-MS</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandre%20Gonzalez">Alexandre Gonzalez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zohra%20Benfodda"> Zohra Benfodda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20B%C3%A9nim%C3%A9lis"> David Bénimélis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jean-Xavier%20Fontaine"> Jean-Xavier Fontaine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Roland%20Molini%C3%A9"> Roland Molinié</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Meffre"> Patrick Meffre</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by flowers play an important role in plant ecology. The Irish construction industry, however, has been much slower to adopt the principles of lean, opting instead to stick with the traditional approach to construction project delivery which is inherently wasteful. Lean thinking holds the potential to revolutionize the construction industry in a similar manner to the adoption of lean manufacturing. Lean principles present opportunities for reduced project duration, reduced project cost, improved quality, and elimination of re-works and non-value-added activities. The following research has been designed to accumulate research data through available literature, electronic surveys, and interviews. The results show an industry reluctant to accept change and an undefined path to successful lean construction implementation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=barriers" title="barriers">barriers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lean%20construction" title=" lean construction"> lean construction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lean%20implementation" title=" lean implementation"> lean implementation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lean%20manufacturing" title=" lean manufacturing"> lean manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lean%20philosophy" title=" lean philosophy"> lean philosophy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162221/lean-implementation-manufacturing-vs-construction-a-roadmap-for-success" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162221.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">73</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">152</span> Mechanical Cortical Bone Characterization with the Finite Element Method Based Inverse Method</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Djamel%20Remache">Djamel Remache</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marie%20Semaan"> Marie Semaan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=C%C3%A9cile%20Baron"> Cécile Baron</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Martine%20Pithioux"> Martine Pithioux</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Chabrand"> Patrick Chabrand</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jean-Marie%20Rossi"> Jean-Marie Rossi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jean-Louis%20Milan"> Jean-Louis Milan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Cortical bone is a complex multi-scale structure. Extracts of the two fruit juices were separately treated at 70 for 15 min each so as to inactivate micro-organisms. They were analyzed and blended in different proportions of 70% pawpaw and 30% pineapple, 60% pawpaw and 40% pineapple, 50% pineapple and 50% pawpaw, 40% pawpaw and 60% pineapple. The characterization of the fresh pawpaw and pineapple juice before blending showed that the juices have good quality. The high water content of the product may have affected the viscosity, vitamin C content and total soluble solid of the blended juice to be low. The effects of the process parameters on the quality showed that better quality of the blended juice can be obtained within the optimum temperature range of (50-70 °C) and enzyme concentration range (0.12-0.18 w/v). The ratio of mix 60% pineapple juice: 40% pawpaw juice has better quality. Connecting these three paradigms, in this work we propose an architecture for an intelligent system which provides an interface that assists the user on smart environments, informing, suggesting actions and allowing to manage the objects of his/her daily life. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=internet%20of%20things" title="internet of things">internet of things</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cloud" title=" cloud"> cloud</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intelligent%20personal%20assistant" title=" intelligent personal assistant"> intelligent personal assistant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=architecture" title=" architecture"> architecture</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21138/a-pervasive-system-architecture-for-smart-environments-in-internet-of-things-context" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21138.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">514</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">149</span> Assessing Knowledge Management Impacts: Challenges, Limits and Base for a New Framework</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Mbassegue">Patrick Mbassegue</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mickael%20Gardoni"> Mickael Gardoni</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In a market environment centered more and more on services and the digital economy, knowledge management becomes a framework that can help organizations to create value and to improve their overall performance. Based on an optimal allocation of scarce resources, managers are interested in demonstrating the added value generated by knowledge management projects. One of the challenges faced by organizations is the difficulty in measuring impacts and concrete results of knowledge management initiatives. The present article concerns the measure of concrete results coming from knowledge management projects based on balance scorecard model. One of the goals is to underline what can be done based on this model but also to highlight the limits associated. The present article is structured in five parts; 1-knowledge management projects and organizational impacts; 2- a framework and a methodology to measure organizational impacts; 3- application illustrated in two case studies; 4- limits concerning the proposed framework; 5- the proposal of a new framework to measure organizational impacts. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=knowledge%20management" title="knowledge management">knowledge management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=project" title=" project"> project</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=balance%20scorecard" title=" balance scorecard"> balance scorecard</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=impacts" title=" impacts"> impacts</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54657/assessing-knowledge-management-impacts-challenges-limits-and-base-for-a-new-framework" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54657.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">262</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">148</span> Does Supervisory Board Composition Influence Sustainability Reporting Quality?</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Patrick%20Velte">Patrick Velte</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Sustainability reporting has become a central element of modern corporate governance practice. This paper is the first to recognize supervisory board independence, sustainable expertise and gender diversity in two European two tier countries and their impact on sustainability reporting quality. For a sample of 188 German and Austrian companies which are listed at the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt and Vienna Stock Exchange for the business years 2012-2013, descriptive findings show that CSR reporting quality is still low in both countries. Furthermore, multiple regressions state that independent and female members in the supervisory board do have a positive impact on CSR reporting quality in Germany and Austria. However, the existence of sustainable experts in the supervisory board both in Germany and Austria shows a positive but insignificant impact. Our findings suggest that the current European corporate governance regulations can be a useful instrument to increase the quality of modern CSR reporting for the stakeholders. <p
