And in his sowing some fell by the wayside; and it was trodden down, and the birds of the heaven devoured <i>it</i>.<Fr> <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><FR>And another fell upon the rock; and, springing up, it was withered because of not having moisture.<Fr> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><FR>And another fell amid the thorns; and the thorns growing with it choked it.<Fr> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><FR>And another fell into the good ground; and, growing, it produced fruit, a hundredfold."<Fr> Saying these things, He was crying aloud, <FR>"He that hath ears to hear, let him hear."<Fr><p> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And His disciples were asking Him, what this parable might be. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And He said, <FR>"To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables; that, seeing, they may not see, and, hearing, they may not understand.<Fr><p> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span><FR>Now this is the parable: The seed is the word of God.<Fr> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><FR>And those by the wayside are those who heard; then the Devil comes, and takes away the word from their heart; lest, having believed, they should be saved.<Fr> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span><FR>"And those on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root; who, for a season, believe, and in time of temptation fall away.<Fr> <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span><FR>"And that which fell among the thorns, these are those who heard; and, going forth, they are choked with anxieties, and riches, and pleasures of life, and bear no fruit to perfection.<Fr> <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span><FR>"And that in the good ground, these are such as, in a good and honest heart, having heard the word, hold <i>it</i> fast, and bear fruit with patience.<Fr><p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Lesson of the Lamp<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/4.htm#21">Mark 4:21–25</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span><FR>"And no one, having lighted a lamp, covers it with a vessel, or puts it under a bed; but puts it on a lamp-stand, that those coming in may see the light;<Fr> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><FR>for nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; nor hidden, that shall not be known, and become manifest.<Fr> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>Take heed, therefore, how ye hear; for whosoever has, to him shall be given; and whosoever has not, even what he seems to have shall be taken from him."<Fr><p> <A name="20"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus’ Mother and Brothers<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/12.htm#46">Matthew 12:46–50</a>; <a href ="../mark/3.htm#31">Mark 3:31–35</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Now there came to Him His mother and brothers; and they could not get to Him because of the multitude. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And it was reported to Him, "Thy mother and Thy brothers have been standing without, wishing to see Thee." <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And He, answering, said to them, <FR>"My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God, and do <i>it</i>."<Fr><p> <A name="23"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Calms the Storm<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/8.htm#23">Matthew 8:23–27</a>; <a href ="../mark/4.htm#35">Mark 4:35–41</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now it came to pass on one of the days, that both He and His disciples entered into a boat; and He said to them, <FR>"Let us go over to the other side of the lake."<Fr> And they set forth. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But, as they were sailing, He fell asleep. And there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were being filled full <i>of water</i>, and were in peril. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And, coming near, they awoke Him, saying, "Master, Master, we perish!" And, having arisen, He rebuked the wind and the raging of the water; and they ceased, and it became calm. <A name="26"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"Where is your faith?"<Fr> And, struck with fear, they marvelled, saying one to another, "Who, then, is This, that He commandeth even the winds and the water, and they obey Him!"<p> <A name="27"></a><p class="hdg">The Demons and the Pigs<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/8.htm#28">Matthew 8:28–34</a>; <a href ="../mark/5.htm">Mark 5:1–20</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And they sailed down into the country of the Gerasenes, which is over against Galilee. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And, when He went forth on the land, there met Him a certain man out of the city, who had demons, and for a long time he had worn no clothing; and he abode not in a house, but in the tombs. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And, seeing Jesus, he, crying out, fell down before Him, and, with a loud voice, said, "What <i>is there</i> to me and to Thee, Jesus, Son of God Most High? I beg of Thee, do not torment me!" <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>For He was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man; for many times had it seized him, and he was bound with chains and fetters, kept under guard; and, bursting the bonds, he was driven by the demon into the deserts. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And Jesus asked him, <FR>"What is your name?"<Fr> And he said, "Legion," (because many demons entered into him). <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And they were entreating Him, that He would not command them to go away into the abyss.<p> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And there was there a herd of many swine in the mountains; and they besought Him that He would permit them to enter into them. And He permitted them. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And the demons, going out from the man, entered into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, and were drowned.<p> <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And those feeding <i>them</i>, seeing what had taken place, fled, and carried the tidings into the city and into the country. <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And they went out to see what had taken place; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons went out, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and having his right mind; and they were afraid. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And those who saw it reported to them how the demon-possessed man was delivered. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And the whole multitude of the <i>surrounding</i> country of the Gerasenes asked Him to depart from them; because they were being constrained by great fear. And He, entering into a boat, returned. <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And the man, from whom the demons had gone forth, was begging Him that he might be with Him; but He sent him away, saying, <A name="40"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span><FR>"Return to your house, and relate how great things God did for you."<Fr> And he departed, publishing through all the city how great things Jesus did for him.<p> <A name="41"></a><p class="hdg">The Healing Touch of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/9.htm#18">Matthew 9:18–26</a>; <a href ="../mark/5.htm#21">Mark 5:21–43</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And, as Jesus returned, the multitude welcomed Him; for they were all expecting Him. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And, behold, there came a man whose name was Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue; and, falling down near Jesus' feet, he was beseeching Him to come into his house; <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>because he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying! But, as He was going away, the multitudes were thronging.<p> <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who could not be cured, <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>coming up behind, touched the border of His garment, and immediately her flow of blood stopped. <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>And Jesus said, <FR>"Who <i>is it</i> that touched Me?"<Fr> And, when all were denying, Peter said, "Master, the multitudes are thronging Thee, and hard pressing Thee!" <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>But Jesus said, <FR>"Some one touched Me; for I perceived that power had gone out from Me."<Fr> <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And the woman, seeing that she was not concealed, came trembling; and, falling down before Him, reported before all the people for what cause she touched Him, and how she was instantly healed. <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>And He said to her, <FR>"Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace."<Fr><p> <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>While He is yet speaking, there comes one from the ruler of the synagogue, saying, "Your daughter has died; trouble not the Teacher." <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>But Jesus, hearing <i>it</i>, answered him, <FR>"Fear not; only believe; and she shall be made whole!"<Fr> <A name="52"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>And, coming into the house, He permitted no one to enter with Him, except Peter, and James, and John, and the father of the maiden, and <i>her</i> mother. <A name="53"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>And they were all weeping, and bewailing her; but He said, <FR>"Weep not; for she did not die, but is sleeping."<Fr> <A name="54"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>And they were deriding Him, knowing that she died. <A name="55"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>But He, taking her by the hand, called, saying, <FR>"Maiden, arise."<Fr> <A name="56"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>And her spirit returned to her, and she rose up instantly; and He commanded that <i>something</i> should be given to her to eat. <span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/8-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>And her parents were astonished.
