and they lined<MH6186a> up<MH6186a> for battle<MH4421> against<MH854> them in the Valley<MH6010> of Siddim<MH7708>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>against<MH854> Chedorlaomer<MH3540> king<MH4428> of Elam<MH5867a>, Tidal<MH8413> king<MH4428> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Goiim<MH1472b>, Amraphel<MH569> king<MH4428> of Shinar<MH8152>, and Arioch<MH746a> king<MH4428> of Ellasar<MH495>—four<MH702> kings<MH4428> against<MH854> five<MH2568>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now the Valley<MH6010> of Siddim<MH7708> was full of tar<MH2564> pits<MH875>; and the kings<MH4428> of Sodom<MH5467> and Gomorrah<MH6017> fled<MH5127>, and they fell<MH5307> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>into them. But those who survived<MH7604> fled<MH5127> to the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then they took<MH3947> all<MH3605> the possessions<MH7399> of Sodom<MH5467> and Gomorrah<MH6017> and all<MH3605> their food<MH400> supply<MH400>, and departed<MH1980>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>They also took<MH3947> Lot<MH3876>, Abram’s<MH87> nephew<MH1121, 251>, and his possessions<MH7399> and departed<MH1980>, for he was living<MH3427> in Sodom<MH5467>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>a survivor<MH6412a> came<MH935> and told<MH5046> Abram<MH87> the Hebrew<MH5680>. Now he was residing<MH7931> by the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>oaks<MH436> of Mamre<MH4471> the Amorite<MH567>, brother<MH251> of Eshcol<MH812> and brother<MH251> of Aner<MH6063>, and they<MH1992a> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>allies<MH1167, 1285> with Abram<MH87>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>When Abram<MH87> heard<MH8085> that his relative<MH251> had been taken<MH7617> captive<MH7617>, he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>led<MH7385a> out<MH7385a> his trained<MH2593> men<MH2593>, born<MH3211> in his house<MH1004>, <i>numbering</i> 318<MH7969, 3967, 8083, 6240>, and went<MH7291> in<MH7291> pursuit<MH7291> as far<MH5704> as Dan<MH1835>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then he divided<MH2505a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>his forces against<MH5921> them by night<MH3915>, he and his servants<MH5650>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>defeated<MH5221> them, and pursued<MH7291> them as far<MH5704> as Hobah<MH2327>, which<MH834> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>north<MH8040> of Damascus<MH1834>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>He brought<MH7725> back<MH7725> all<MH3605> the possessions<MH7399>, and also<MH1571> brought<MH7725> back<MH7725> his relative<MH251> Lot<MH3876> with his possessions<MH7399>, and also<MH1571> the women<MH802>, and the <i>other</i> people<MH5971a>. <p class="hdg">God’s Promise to Abram</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then after<MH310> his return<MH7725> from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>defeat<MH5221> of Chedorlaomer<MH3540> and the kings<MH4428> who<MH834> were with him, the king<MH4428> of Sodom<MH5467> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH7122> him at the Valley<MH6010> of Shaveh<MH7740> (that is, the King’s<MH4428> Valley<MH6010>). <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And Melchizedek<MH4442> the king<MH4428> of Salem<MH8004> brought<MH3318> out<MH3318> bread<MH3899> and wine<MH3196>;
